Engaging Language Students through the PanAm Games

Official Languages, Community & Cultural Affairs and Volunteer Outreach (PanAm)

The Pan Am/Parapan Am Games are the world’s third largest international multi-sport Games –

larger than both the Montreal and Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. Approximately 10,000

athletes and officials from 41 countries across the Americas will attend. This is the first time

Ontario has hosted an international multi-sport Games since 1930. The Games are officially

trilingual – English, French and Spanish – with other languages being spoken as well

(Portuguese, for example).

This dynamic session will give an Overview of the Games, highlighting the scope and footprint,

as well as the Games Legacy. Covering topics unique to the Games including the mascot and the

Torch Relay. Community Outreach initiatives, including Kids in Play and Ignite, will be delved

into. The Volunteer Program, where 20,000 volunteers will be required throughout the Games

footprint to support the over 50 functional areas will also be highlighted.

A Passion for French

Franconnexion sessions help students understand the lifelong benefits of speaking French.

Presented by a panel of teachers who have offered successful sessions for 35 to 300 students (at

all levels of language competence), this workshop will show how to inspire a greater

appreciation for French in your classroom and school.

Authentic Bilingual Connections

Erin Coulson, Stephanie Stagg, Peel District School Board

As FSL teachers, we promote authentic communicative activities which use technology as the

vehicle for building relationships. During this workshop, we will present four activities which

seamlessly weave language together with 21st century technologies, in order to build confidence

and fluency in French. We have successfully used these activities in both French Immersion and

Core French Classrooms in Peel. We would like to present four rich technology driven tasks: a

QR encoded video assignment, a Claymation task, a mystery skype session and a game show.

Using French as the language of communication, we aspire to promote a fun and creative

environment whereby students explore Francophone culture while further developing fluency.

L'approche actionnelle? Where do I start?

CEFR? L'approche actionnelle? How do I plan my units now? This workshop will examine a

Grade 9 Core French unit that incorporates "authentic situations", oral activities, and technology.

The planning process will be outlined and possible modifications for younger grades and

struggling students will be discussed. All unit activities will be annotated by the rationale and

available online.

Connecting and Communicating: Using Skype and the CEFR to get your students talking

This Skype project for students, based on the CEFR, uses technology to engage and enable them

to communicate with peers. Co-created anchor charts, success criteria and the gradual release of

responsibility lead to spontaneous oral interaction in an authentic setting. Assessment, evaluation

and differentiation will be discussed.

"Text" sound or verbal sound? Phonics is the medium.

In the high demands of the 21st century learning and gaming environment, language acquisition

is becoming more difficult in light of technology. How do we compete? How do we engage

students that are being drawn inwards with technology to want to verbally articulate thoughts vs.

simply texting a mélange of sound? Les sons français is a tool that breaks down the barriers for

all students to succeed in second language acquisition. Les sons français engages both sides of

the brain for permanent retention. If you can hear the sound; you can formulate the sound. If

you can break down the words into phonemes to be able to read, then you will be able to write

the phonemes and properly spell. Les sons français ~ decoding the language one sound at a time.

Wondering how to formally assess spontaneous interactive communication? Looking for

resources and ideas to facilitate communication in a second language?

Based on the CEFR, this workshop provides grade one teachers with lesson plans, tools, and

suggested resources to foster authentic interaction between grade one French students. This

workshop is ideal for teachers of grade one and two French Immersion, but could easily be used

by any grade.

Workshop delivered in a combination of French and English - written materials in English.

Dans le cadre de la réforme de ses cours de français langue seconde, l'École d'immersion

française de Trois-Pistoles a adhéré aux principes du Cadre Européen Commun de Référence (

CECR) et adopté l'approche actionnelle pour tous ses cours de français langue seconde.

Nous avons alors noté l'absence de contenu canadien dans l'ensemble du matériel pédagogique

disponible sur le marché. Une équipe de professeurs de l'École d'immersion française de Trois-

Pistoles a donc pris les devants et a décidé d'élaborer des unités didactiques qui respectent les

compétences sociolinguistiques propres au Canada-français et les descripteurs proposés par le

CECR.

La présentation portera sur l'élaboration et l'application en salle de classe d'une unité didactique

conforme à l'approche actionnelle et au niveau B1 du CECR.

The Accelerative Integrated Method in 3 different languages

This presentation will demonstrate AIM like you have never seen it before: in French, Spanish

and Mandarin. Participants will get a first-hand feel of what it is like to be an AIM student, as the

presenters take you through a first AIM lesson in all three languages. The session will culminate

in a live demonstration of grade 4 & 5 students who have been participating in a Mandarin Club

one hour a week since September.

How can we support grade 1 FI students so that demission from the program is a last

resort?

The most challenging issue faced by FI teachers and administrators is the question of what to do

with struggling students. Demission in later grades is usually the outcome but is there a better

way to address the needs of struggling FI students other than demission? Could early

identification of at-risk students in the primary grades be a possibility? If so, what would this

look like? The following workshop is designed to address this challenging issue and propose a

means of early identification for primary students at grade one that is supported by current

research.

A programme of songs, singing games and music has been collected and created for the French

Immersion EarlyYears classroom for the year. This will be shared so that the songs can be put:

onto the computer and on a projector with YouTube links; on a Smartboard or just photocopied

in a binder for the teacher. Just use these songs that are in the public domain and those songs

that are copyrighted can be shown via the Internet or music can be downloaded at a reasonable

cost through iTunes. A selection of these songs could also be used in the grade 4 Core French

classrooms.

Second Language Pedagogy at a Young Age

Learning a second language at a very young age may sound counter-intuitive for some, but when

children are appropriately engaged in activities that are meaningful and fun, they learn quickly

and effectively. This workshop will explain how children between 2 and 5 years old can learn a

second language ( Spanish, Chinese or French) while interacting in different activities, singing

songs, making arts and crafts and even preparing food.

Surviving (and thriving!) in intermediate Core French

La Competencia cultural en la enseñanza de español como lengua extranjera / Cultural

competence in the teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language

Learning a language is a question of learning its culture or cultures of those countries in which

the target language is spoken. This is an essential tool to better acquire a sound knowledge and

linguistic competence in that language. Therefore, being able to recognize different cultural

aspects becomes an important and an integral part of the learning and teaching processes. This

main aim of this workshop is to provide teachers with a guide to identify icons and cultural

images of those countries in which Spanish is spoken. We will debate the importance of such

incorporation into the different linguistic skills, as well as the possible difficulties that we may

encounter when trying to do so.

Plus que jamais, dans l’enseignement du 21e siècle les enseignants et les enseignantes des

programmes intensifs de français et d’immersion en français ont besoin d’outils pour aider les

élèves à devenir plus confiants dans leur capacité de communiquer en français. Dans cet atelier,

nous explorons l’outil WIGUP.TV, une ressource et une plateforme électronique en français,

interactive et sécuritaire. L’élève fait appel à des situations authentiques d’apprentissage par le

biais de blogues, de reportages vidéo, d’animations et d’autres moyens disponibles. En plus,

WIGUP.TV contient plus de 1000 courts documentaires pour soutenir les projets ou

l’apprentissage de la langue ou de la matière enseignée (Géographie, Histoire, etc.).Par

l’entremise de WIGUP.TV, «l’enseignant-facilitateur » peut assigner des tâches, accéder au

compte des élèves, commenter le travail, vérifier et évaluer les productions et faire vivre aux

élèves des expériences authentiques en français!

Learning for All, Learning Together: Differentiation & Cooperation in Échos Pro

In this interactive session participants will learn how to apply differentiation and cooperative

learning strategies in the second-language classroom to help challenge support and unlock the

potential of every student. Meeting the needs of all students, supporting them, and teaching them

how to support one another are hallmarks of the Échos Pro series from Pearson and Katy Arnett

and Jim Howden will describe how their research and experience informed the creation of this

leading resource for core French. Participants will receive a complimentary sample package!
