ILM Say, "Are those who know equal to those who do not know?"

al-Qur'an 39:9

2

In The Name of Allah,

the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

"Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), Has created man from a clot (a

piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, Who has taught (the

writing) by the pen [the first person to write was Prophet Idrees (Enoch)], Has taught man that which

he knew not."

al-Qur'an 96:1-5

"And your Lord said: "Invoke Me, [i.e. believe in My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism)] (and ask Me

for anything) I will respond to your (invocation). Verily! Those who scorn My worship [i.e. do not

invoke Me, and do not believe in My Oneness, (Islamic Monotheism)] they will surely enter Hell in

humiliation!"

al-Qur'an: 40:60

"Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls Him, and Who

removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations. Is there any ilah

(god) with Allah? Little is that you remember!"

al-Qur'an 27:62

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every

Muslim."

at-Tirmidhi

The Amir al-Mu'minin Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (ra) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah

(peace be upon him) saying, 'Actions are only by intentions, and each man has only that which he

intends. Whoever's emigration is for Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration is for Allah and

His Messenger. Whoever's emigration is for some worldly gain which he can acquire or a woman he

will marry, then his emigration is for that which he emigrates."

al-Qur'an

1 - In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful,

2 - All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists),

3 - The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful,

4 - The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of

Resurrection),

5 - You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything),

6 - Guide us to the Straight Way,

7 - The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned

Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians). al-Qur'an 1:1-7

Ibn `Abbas said, "While Jibril (Gabriel) was with the Messenger of Allah , he heard a noise from

above. Jibril lifted his sight to the sky and said, ` This is a door in heaven being open, and it has never

been opened before now.' An angel descended from that door and came to the Prophet and said, `

Receive the glad tidings of two lights that you have been given, which no other Prophet before you

was given: the Opening of the Book and the last (three) Ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah. You will not read a

letter of them, but will gain its benefit.''' This is the wording collected by An-Nasa'i (Al-Kubra 5:12)

and Muslim recorded similar wording (1:554)

Surah al-Fatihah is called Umm al-Kitab, because the Qur'an starts with it, and because the prayer is

started by reciting it. al-Bukhari

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "By Him in Whose Hand is my soul! Allah has

never revealed in the Tawrah, the Injil, the Zabur or the Furqan a Surah like it (al-Fatihah)." Tafsir

ibn Kathir, V.1

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Du'a is the essence of worship." at-Tirmidhi

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Whenever a Muslim asks Allah for anything, Allah will either

grant his prayer or protect him from some harm, as long as he does not pray for anything sinful or

for something that would cut off family ties." at-Tirmidhi

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Allah is angry with the person who never asks Him for

anything." at-Tirmidhi

Hadith

The Prophet (peace be

upon him) said: "A

servant of Allah will

remain standing on the

Day of Judgment until he

is questioned about his

(time on earth) and how

he used it; about his

knowledge and how he

utilized it; about his

wealth and from where he

acquired it and in what

(activities) he spent it;

and about his body and

how he used it." at-

Tirmidhi

The Prophet (peace be

upon him) said:

"Knowledge from which

no benefit is derived is

like a treasure out of

which nothing is spent in

the cause of Allah." at-

Tirmidhi

The Prophet (peace be

upon him) said: "Allah,

His angels and all those in

Heavens and on Earth,

even ants in their hills and

fish in the water, call

down blessings on those

who instruct others in

beneficial knowledge."

at-Tirmidhi

7

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "If anyone travels on a road in search of

knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise. The angel will lower their

wings in their great pleasure with one who seeks knowledge. The inhabitants of the Heavens and the

Earth and (even) the fish in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the learned over the devout is like

that of the moon, on the night when it is full, over the rest of the stars. The learned are the heirs of the

Prophets, and the Prophets leave (no monetary inheritance), they leave only knowledge." abu-Dawud

The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Acquire knowledge and impart it to the people." at-

Tirmidhi

The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "One who treads a path in search of knowledge has

his path to Paradise made easy by Allah." Riyadh us-Saleheen

Practical Tips for memorizing the Qur'an

1. The Same Copy Use the same Mus-haf (copy) when you read the Quran and stick to it so that you may become

familiar with it and know the sites of various verses and how to find them quickly when you revise

what you have memorized.

2. Reader Try to find a knowledgeable reader, such as a Shaykh (scholar) who is well versed in the rules of

Tajweed (correct recitation). Start reading to him what you intend to memorise beforehand so that he

may correct any wrong pronunciation.

3. Group Read and memorize the Quran within a group rather than individually. Members of groups help each

other in correcting mistakes and thus make the task easier. Prophet Muhammad said: "Whenever a

group congregates in one of the houses of Allaah (i.e., Mosques) to recite the Book of Allaah (Quran)

and study it, peace and mercy will descend upon them, the angels will surround them and Allaah will

mention them to those with Him (i.e., the angels)." al-Muslim

4. Repeat Repeat what you have memorized to yourself frequently, and the best way to do this is during the

prayers.

5. Tajweed Learn the basic rules of Tajweed before you start memorizing and try to apply these rules while

memorizing. Allaah Says in the Quran (what means):

"… And recite the Quran with measured recitation." al-Quran 73:4

6. Supplication Supplicate to Allaah to help you in memorizing what you have read of the Quran. Many Hadeeths

(Prophetic narrations) point to how this is to be done.

7. Sequence of Chapters Begin memorizing the Quran from the last section (Juz') and work backwards, as the verses in the last

section are shorter and more familiar.

8. Audio Cassette Listening to an audio cassette of the Quran will assist you in memo rising what you have read and

make it easier for you to know the right pronunciation and intonation; however, you must choose a

reader who is well known for being skilled, so that you can memorize the Quran correctly.

9. Location

Try to read the Quran in a quiet location and stick to this if you can, as this will put you in the right

mood to memorize the Quran and keep you away from any distractions. An example of such a place is

the Masjid (Mosque).

10. Time Make reading and memorizing the Quran a daily activity and allocate a special time devoted to this

purpose. Try to choose a suitable time when you are fresh and not tired. The best time is at dawn, as

Allaah Says (what means):

"…Indeed, the recitation [of the Quran] at dawn is ever witnessed" al-Quran 17:78

16

and that is after the Fajr (dawn) prayer. Avoid reading and memorizing in the late evenings when you

come back from work tired and sleepy, as it will be difficult for you to concentrate at that time.

11. Understanding Try to understand the meaning of what you memorize, as this will assist further memorization and

enable you to act upon what you read.

12. Review Always review what you have memorized and make this a regular habit; otherwise you will tend to

forget what you have memorized after a while. It is advisable to review the whole Quran every thirty

days. Prophet Muhammad said: "Take care of the Quran (by memorizing it). I swear by the One in

whose Hand is my soul that it is easier to slip away from you than the camels from their shackles." al-

Bukhaari & Muslim

13. Encouragement Encouragement of your household, particularly the children, will help them to compete with each

other, particularly if you also reward them with gifts. Memorizing the Quran at an early age is very

rewarding as the ability to register and recall knowledge and information is quicker and easier then

than in later years. Also, when you get older, your responsibilities increase and you might find it

difficult to find enough time to achieve your goals.

14. Intention You should be sincere to Allaah and make your intention to seek the reward from Him before

beginning memorizing the Quran. You should feel that the Quran is there to guide mankind to good.

Allaah Says in the Quran (which means):

"This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allaah." al-Quran

2:2

17

One should also realise the great reward of reading and studying the Quran, and there are many

Hadeeths which emphasize this point. Not only are the Muslims who read the Quran rewarded, but

those who listen to it are as well; Allaah Says (what means):

"So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." al-

Quran 7:204

Reading and memorizing the Quran is not difficult, and this fact was stated clearly in the Quranic

verse (which means):

"And We [i.e. Allaah] have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will

remember?" al-Quran 54:17

15. Avoid Ostentation After memorizing the Quran, avoid showing off and arrogance. Being given the ability to memorize

the Quran is a blessing from Allaah, and people might become proud of themselves to have

accomplished this task. Some people might then want everybody to know of their achievement and

thus be admired. This is a kind of Shirk (associating others with Allaah in worship) which is a

dangerous and punishable act. One should be thankful to Allaah as it is He who made it easy for him

to memorize and understand the Quran.

16. Loud Try to read with a reasonably loud voice and listen to your reading. Avoid reading silently - this will

also help you to overcome laziness and tiredness.

17. Set an Amount to Read and Memorize Set a certain amount of verses to read and memorize from the Quran at every session. Start with a

small amount and then increase gradually. Do not be driven by your enthusiasm as this will shortly

wear out. It is more important to persevere in memorizing, no matter how small the amount is.

18. Manners Once you have memorized the Quran, endeavor to acquire its manners, apply it in your life and act

upon it, as this obligation is more emphasized on those who know it by heart.

18

Benefits of Siwak

We may also sense the greatness of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) command to use the Miswak in

his words:

'The Siwak is purifying for the mouth and pleasing to the Lord.' Ahmad_and_IbnMajah

The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not get up after a nap neither at night or during the day without

using the Siwak, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) urged his Ummah to use Siwak all the time,

when he said,

'Were is not that it would be too hard for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the

Siwak at the time of every prayer.'

As is proven in the Saheehain, when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) got up at night he

would clean his mouth with the Siwak, and he also encouraged us to use the Siwak at all the time,

even when fasting. That is because of the great benefits that it offers to the mouth and teeth. These

benefits include the following:

It kills germs. Research has proved that it kills off at least five types of disease-causing germs

that are found in the mouth, the most important of which is the streptococcus bacteria which

causes some types of rheumatic fever (Brown and Jacob, 1979)

It removes food remnants and yellowness from the teeth, and makes teeth shiny.

It purifies the mouth by killing germs and treats wounds and inflammation of the gums.

It prevents the growth of germs by increasing acidity in the mouth.

It removes plaque before it becomes hard and affects the tissues.

It prevents diseases of the mouth and teeth.

It has been proved that it effectively reduces sugar levels and has an anti-cancer effect.

Allah and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His Messenger; written on it. I therefore know that You

wouldn;t have mentioned someone’s name beside Yours unless he was the most beloved person to

You in the whole of Your creation.” So Allah said to him, “O Adam, you have spoken rightly, verily

from among you to be in their place.” So they chose Harut and Marut; and they both descended

towards the Earth. Allah then Gave them sexual desires. They then finally descended to the Earth.

Upon reaching Earth there came to them a woman called Zuhra and they both fell in love with her. So

they both began to conceal from each other the feelings of lust, which they had in their hearts for

Zuhra. One of them returned to her; then the other same and said, “Do you feel what I feel for her?”

He said, “Yes.” Then they both asked her for her body. She replied, “I will never submit my body to

you both until you teach me the secret word that you use to ascend the Heavens and return to Earth.”

Then both Harut and Marut refused; then again they asked for her body but she refused also. They

both then gave in and taught her the secret words to ascend in the Heavens. She immediately used it

and as soon as she ascended the Heavens, Allah tossed a star at her, which destroyed all her wings.

Harut and Marut then begged Allah to forgive them; so Allah gave them a choice. He Said, “If you

like, I can Return you to your angelic state and punish you now in the duniya and return you to your

angelic state on Judgement Day.” One of the them said to the other, “The punishment of duniya is

temporary.” So they chose to be punished in the duniya rather than to be punished in the Hereafter.

Allah then Told them to go to Babylon, so they both went there and stayed. They are presently

The Last Sermon of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

In the tenth year after the Hijrah to Madeenah Allah's Last Messenger Muhammad peace be upon him

went on a pilgrimage to Makkah for the last time and delivered his last sermon to huge gathering of

Muslims. In fact, it was a Universal Declaration or Charter of Human Rights, excelling any that has so

far been drafted by the collective effort of all the nations of the worlds. The Last Sermon was and

remains an imperishable message to the whole of mankind. Standing on Mount 'Arafah, he said,

"O people! Listen to me. All praise is for Allah. We praise Him and seek His pardon and we turn to

Him. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil of ourselves and the wickedness of our deeds.

Whosoever Allah guides there is none to lead him astray and there is none to guide aright whosoever

Allah leads astray. I bear witness that none is worthy of worship except Allah, the One, Who has no

partner. His is the sovereignty and to Him is due all praise. He grants life and causes death and He is

able to do all things. There is none worthy of worship except Allah, the One. He fulfilled His promise

and granted victory to His Believers and He Alone routed the enemies of Islam.

"O people! Listen to my words for I do not know whether we shall ever meet again and perform Hajj

after this year. O' people! Allah says:

"O' mankind! We have created you from a male and female and made you into nations and tribes that

you may know one another. Verily the most honorable of you in the sight of Allah is the one with the

most taqwa [i.e., pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much, abstaining from all kinds of sins

and evil deeds which He has forbidden and love Allah much and perform all kinds of good deeds

which He has ordained]. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing." al-Qur'an 49:13

There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for a white

over a black, nor for a black over a white except in good deeds and right. All mankind is the progeny

of Adam [peace be upon him] and Adam was fashioned out of a clay. Behold, every claim of privilege

whether that of blood or property, is under my heels except that of the custody of Ka'bah and the

supplying of water to the pilgrims. O' people of Quraysh! Therefore do not appear on the Day of

Judgement before Allah with the burdens of the evils of this world around your necks, whereas other

people on that day will appear happy, exceeding the rewards of Paradise. In that case, none would be

able to help you.

"Behold, all the practices of the days of ignorance are now under my feet. The blind revenges of the

days of ignorance are remitted. The first claim of blood I abolish is that of my cousin 'Amir ibn

Rabee'ah ibn Harith ibn 'Abdul Muttalib who was killed by the Hazel tribe. All claims of interest and

usury accruing from the times of ignorance now stand wiped put. And the first amount of interest that

I pardon is that which 'Abbas ibn 'Abdul Muttalib had to receive. Now it is remitted entirely."

"O people! Verily, your blood, your property and your honour are sacred and inviolable. This sacred

inviolability comes into force from this day, from this month and from this very town of yours.

Verily, you will soon meet your Lord and you will be held answerable for your actions."

"O people! You have certain rights over your women and your women have certain rights over you. It

is your right upon them to honour their conjugal rights and not to commit acts of impropriety. If they

28

do, you are authorized by Allah to separate them from your beds and to chastise them, but not

severely, and if they refrain, then cloth and feed them properly."

"Behold, it is not permissible for a woman to give anything from the wealth of her husband to anyone

except with his consent."

"Treat women kindly, since they are your helpers and not in a position to manage their affairs

themselves. Fear Allah concerning women, for verily, you have taken them on the security of Allah

and have made their persons lawful unto you by the words of Allah."

"O people! Allah, has ordained for everyone his due share of inheritance. Hence there is no need of a

special testament for an heir."

"Take heed not to go astray after me and not to strike one another's neck. All debts must be repaid, all

borrowed property must be returned, gifts should be reciprocated and ensure that a loss is made to the

loser. If anyone has any trust with him he must return it to the owner."

"Beware, for a crime, no one else is responsible except the one who commits it. Neither the son is

responsible for the crime of the father nor the father responsible for the crime of the son."

"Nothing of his brother is lawful for a Muslim except he himself gives willingly. So do not acquire

wrongly."

29

"O people! Every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim, and all the Muslims from one

brotherhood. After your salves! See that you feed them with such food as you eat yourselves, and

cloth them with clothes that you yourselves wear."

"O people! Listen and obey, even if an ordinary Abyssinian slave is appointed over you as your

Ameer (leader), provided he executes among you the ordinances of the Book of Allah."

"O people! No Messenger would be raised after me and no new Ummah would be formed after you."

"verily, I have left amongst you that which will never lead you astray - the Book of Allah, which if

you hold fast to it, you shall never go astray. And beware of transgressing the limits set in the matter

of religion, for it will mean the transgression of the proper bonds of religion that brought destruction

to many people before you."

"Verily, Satan is disappointed at not being worshiped in this land of yours, but he is ever ready to lead

you astray into wrongdoing in the small or big matters of your life. So beware of him in matters of

religion."

"Behold, worship your Lord, offer prayers five times a day, observe fasts in the month of Ramadan,

pay readily the Zakah (poor-due), perform Hajj, obey your rulers, who are from amongst you, and you

will be admitted to the Paradise of Allah."

"Let him who is present convey all this to him who is absent for many other people to whom the

message is conveyed may be more mindful of it than the audience."

At the end of the sermon, he asked the gathering: "On the Day of Judgement, when you will be asked

about me whether or not I conveyed the Message of Allah, what would you reply?" All, with one

voice said, "We are witness now and will witness on the Day of Judgement that you have conveyed

the Message of Allah. You have conveyed the Commands of Allah to us and given us the guidance

and instructions." Thereupon, Allah's Last Messenger [peace be upon him] lifted his forefinger

towards the sky and repeated thrice,

"O my Lord! You be witness to this, You be witness to this, You be witness to this."

Grave sin of Innovation

Al-Hasan Al-Basree said: “Do not sit with the people of innovation and desires, nor argue with them,

nor listen to them.” Sunan Ad-Daarimee, 1/121

Imam Hasan al-Basri said: "The Sunnah is – by Him besides whom none has the right to be

worshipped – between those who exceed the limits and those who fall short. So be patient upon it,

may Allah have mercy upon you. For indeed, the {true} Ahlus-Sunnah were a minority from those

who preceded and shall be a minority from those to come. They did not accompany the people who

are excessive when they exceeded the limits, nor the people of innovation when they innovated.

Rather, they persevered upon the Sunnah, until they met their Lord." Sunan ad-Darimi, Volume 1

pgs. 71-72

Ibn Taymiyyah said: “Worship is founded upon the Legal Law and following it, not upon ones base

desires and innovations.” Majmu Fatawa, 1/80

Abu Ja'far at-Tirmidhi, when asked as to how Allah keeps His Attribute of being above the creation if

He Descends to the Lowest Heaven in the last third of the night, replied, "The Nazul (Descends of

Allah) is understood, but the how/nature is unknown, and faith in it is obligatory, and to question

about [how] it is an innovation (bid'ah)." Mukhtasar al-Uluw (p.231). Al-Albani declared the chain

Sahih. Abu Ja'far was from the greatest scholars of his day.
