NAPLAN

(NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY)

2010 Primary School Results Overview

In May this year, years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students in the whole Australian nation participated in the NAPLAN tests. During the latter part of term 3, our students’ results were sent home along with a letter and pamphlet on how to interpret your child’s results.

As the Primary NAPLAN coordinator, I am delighted to inform you that we have received very pleasing results in most areas of NAPLAN in Grades 3 and 5. In Grade 3, our average scores in Reading, Spell-ing, Grammar and Punctuation and Numeracy were above the state, whereas in Writing, we were equal with the rest of the state. All our year 3 stu-dents (100%) were at or above the National Mini-mum Standards in Reading, Writing, Spelling and Numeracy and 98% in Grammar and Punctuation. In Grade 5, our average score in Spelling was above the state and in Writing and Grammar and Punctuation we were equal with the rest of the state. All our year 5 students (100%) were at or above the National Mini-mum Standards in Reading, Writing, and Numeracy and 98% in Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation.

On Monday, 11th October, NAPLAN high achieving students were be awarded with certificates and prizes for their outstand-ing results during a whole college assembly. Congratulations to our students, teachers, parents and the wider school community for our successful NAPLAN results, which is a true reflection on how well we work together in partnership with students, teachers and parents at Ilim College. We hope to con-tinue this success in 2011 and beyond, Insha’Allah.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

2010 Secondary School Results - Overview

The 2010 NAPLAN results were released to the public on the last week of Term 3, and as the senior school NAPLAN Coordi-nator, I am delighted with this year’s results. Students in Year Seven and Year Nine are continuing to increase the knowledge in all key components in literacy and numeracy, thus further improving on last year’s results.

The Year Seven students have achieved commendable results throughout all the major components. The most outstanding achievement was in the Spelling component where nearly half of all students in Year Seven are at least one year above their year level!

All Year Nine students are to be commended for their hard work and dedication as their results this year were fantastic! The Year Nine students excelled above expectations and deliv-ered results that were never seen before. The Year Nine stu-dents preformed above the state in all key learning areas – an amazing accomplishment!

On behalf of the teachers, administration and school board, the principal Mr. Kirca awarded all secondary school students who achieved outstanding results with certificates. The mem-bers of the school board were also very generous in awarding prizes to the many students who excelled in the NAPLAN tests in a whole-school assembly.

With the Faculty of English and Math working exceptionally hard throughout the course of the year to improve on last year’s results, all students and teachers are to be commend-ed on these outstanding results. These results manifest the schools desires, dedication and devotion to ensure that all stu-dents in Ilim College are obtaining the best possible education. Hassan Mansour

Health Hints:Prevention is better than cure. By regularly and cor-rectly using sun protection whenever outdoors, you can:

* minimise freckling, wrinkling and ageing of the skin

* minimise the risk of eye damage

* avoid sunburn; sunburn at any age, whether serious or mild, can cause permanent and irreversible skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer

* reduce your lifetime ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure; reducing lifetime exposure to UV by 20% is estimated to result in about one third fewer cases of skin cancer in Australia

* ultimately reduce your skin cancer risk.

Protect yourself in five ways from skin cancer: Slip! Slop! Slap! Seek! Slide!

1. Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much of your body as possible.

2. Slop on SPF 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen liberally to dry skin, at least 20 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours when outdoors.

3. Slap on a broad brimmed hat that shades your face, neck and ears.

4. Seek shade

5. Slide on sunglasses.

Student Counselling Corner

Setting Your Child up for “SuccessThese are some general ideas that might help you and your family in setting your child up for a successful and happy life.

Contrary to what is often assumed, a successful life is not just to be literate and numerate. To be successful, children and adults need effective communication and self expression, good problem solving skills and resilience. We all need to be able to form meaningful and positive relationships and to feel good about ourselves with a strong sense of positive self esteem. We need to be as healthy and fit as possible in body and mind and we need to be able to initiate ideas and make decisions.

1. Sitting together regularly at a meal table without any electronic entertainment in the same room.

This promotes

• Language and conversation skills

• Relationship building

• Sharing and reflecting at the end of the day

2. Ensure that there is one television (and other electronic entertainment) in a common family area rather than in each bedroom

This promotes

• Relationship building

• Resilience

• Turn-taking

• Negotiation skills

3. Ensure computer use is in a common family area rather than a bedroom

This promotes

• Relationship building

• Sharing and reflecting

4. Provide opportunities for children/adolescents to sort through their own battles with their siblings (avoid being the referee who constantly adjudicates for the children - put the whistle away!).

This promotes

• Language and conversation skills

• Relationship building

• Negotiation skills

• Resilience
