“The other son replied, ‘Yes, sir’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?”
I’m a chronic over-booker. I tend to say yes when the only reasonable answer is no. The result is a life lived on the edge of exhaustion, not to mention the frayed ends of my nerves, “No” is a perfectly good response, I tell myself. Right before I say yes again. My friend Rich even got me a button to press on my desk that says NO for me, in a variety of deeply irritating prerecorded voices. One of them even spells it out: N-O! Who knows why the second son says yes but does no? Maybe he meant to get around to it, but failed to plan properly. Maybe he forgot. Maybe he was kept from his commitment by some unforeseen circumstance. Maybe he just lied to get his dad off his back. Or maybe he was like me: a pleaser, with a deep need to supply the preferred answer. But the truth is, the only right answer is the one we get behind with heart, soul, and action. Are you more like the first or second son in the parable?

Soy una crónica “complaciente” en mis actividades. Una de ellas explica lo que es ¡N-O!
¿Quién sabe por qué el segundo hijo dice que sí, pero no? Tal vez quería llegar a el, pero falló en planificarlo adecuadamente. Tal vez se le olvidó. A lo mejor se le impidió por alguna circunstancia imprevista. Tal vez sólo mintió para complacer a su papa en su solicitud. O tal vez se desgaste como yo: soy complaciente, con una profunda necesidad de proporcionar la respuesta preferida. Pero la verdad es que la única respuesta correcta es la que recibimos con corazón, alma y acción.

Thank you to all the volunteers who made our Feast Day Celebration a huge success! We started off with a car wash and together with the 50+ volunteers washed 147 cars and raised $1,616, including donations. It was a busy 24 hours and we could not have done it without your help. ¡Gracias a todos los voluntarios que hicieron de nuestra Fiesta Celebración un gran éxito! Empezamos con lavado de autos y con mas de 50 voluntarios, lavamos 147 autos y recaudamos $ 1,616, incluyendo donaciones. Fueron 24 horas de trabajo y no podríamos haberlo sin tu ayuda.
Annual Convocation for all Priests of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon will take place this week, Monday, October 2 to Thursday, October 5. Both Fr. Heuberger and Fr. Fredy are signed up for these days. For any sick calls please contact the Parish office.
Panhandlers Please do not give money to panhandlers in front of the Church doors. It is unsafe for them and unsafe for us. If a parishioner or parish family is in need of financial assistance or emergency assistance please come to the Parish office during the week. We can offer assistance or temporary aid. We can many times refer individuals to the proper agencies for food, utility bills, rent, phone bills, housing. In the State of Oregon if minor children are involved more assistance could be available.
“A Place for Mom” is an on-line free service for households looking for various kinds of living arrangements. They are in most major cities. Assisted living, independent living, low cost, luxury, memory care, nursing homes. There is no cost; community partners pay for placement services. Veterans Care is a particular aspect of the program. Get some insider tips, advice, know how, resources.

Pre/K Faith Formation classes start TODAY at 10:15 am. The children will meet in the Library downstairs in Reedy Hall. Registration Forms will be available. Children who are age 4 or 5 by September 1 are eligible.
We are settling in to our new year of Faith Formation with over 350 children. The children will be learning their prayers a line at a time before they go to class then it will be repeated in their classes. Thank you for bringing the children on time.
We do have need of crossing guards on Monday and Tuesday evenings to get the children safely across the street to and from the Church. Please see Sheila or Sr. Guadalupe if you can help us.
If you have children with Special Needs and they are at least 7 years old, we can prepare them to receive the Sacrament of First Communion. Please see Sheila in the Religious Education Office to register. Classes begin October 3 at 7 pm, Conference Room C. Sr. Guadalupe will be teaching the classes.

High School Youth Night - THIS Wednesday, October 4th ~ 7:00-8:30 pm. If you have not registered yet, call Lisa ASAP to do so!
Deadline for registering for First Eucharist preparation and Confirmation preparation for high school students is October 4. You must set an appointment with Lisa, please do so ASAP. We expect those planning to receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist and the Sacrament of Confirmation to be actively involved in their Parish community in addition to regular Mass attendance, for at least one year prior to receiving the Sacrament.
Vicariate Youth Fall Kick Off 2017 - The Catholic churches in the area will join together for our annual kickoff for the year event on October 15th. All youth are invited for Mass, Adoration & dessert! We will meet at St. Edward in Keizer. Pick up a flyer on the kiosk for more info. Registration forms are due Wednesday, October 11th.

Married Couples Night Monday, October 2nd. We gather once a month for fellowship, formation, fun, food, etc. If you are interested in coming, please call or email Lisa.
Bible Study – Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 pm. We look at the readings for the upcoming Sunday, reflect and pray together. We meet at Broadway Commons—1300 Broadway St. NE – Salem. It’s a great way to prepare for Mass!
NEW Young Adult Group for those right out of high school ~ 18-23 yrs. old ~ will meet Wednesday, October 4th from 7:00-8:30 pm in Conference Room A.
FIRST THURSDAYS – October 5th Fatima - A Call to Pray for Peace. We meet at 7 pm at McMenamin’s Thompson Brewery & Public House (3575 Liberty Rd. S. - Salem). No food or drink purchase necessary. Guest speaker Michele Martinez Thompson.

Thank you to Blanchet Seniors Justin Outland, Raul Saldana, and Jacob Carsley for their work on the Rummage Sale. They took on the Rummage Sale as their Blanchet Service Project. Thanks to their hard work, the sale made over $4,000. The money will support the music program, the school library, bark chips for the playground, and the St. Vincent de Paul Scholarship Fund. We love seeing our alumni give back to their elementary school! If you want to see pictures of the wonderful work these kids did check out the new Facebook page @SaintVdPSalem.
Gracias a los Seniors de Blanchet, Justin Outland, Raúl Saldana y Jacob Carsley por su trabajo en la venta en Rummage Sale. Ellos tomaron la venta como su proyecto de servicio de Blanchet. RCIA is a time to ask questions, reflect on Scripture and learn more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian in the world today. This process is for adults who may be interested in fully joining our faith community (“becoming Catholic”) and for those who are interested in completing the Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist). If you, or someone you know, is interested, you are welcome to join the process.
