“These last ones worked only an hour, and you have made them equal to us.”
We’ll know we’re thinking with God for sure when this parable of the hired laborers makes perfect sense to us. At first hearing, it sounds way off base. Why should people get paid the same no matter how long they work? Would you or I work for a company in which the salary was the same for the slackers as well as the go-getters? Wouldn’t we be tempted to throw in our lot with the slackers?
God’s generosity, just like God’s mercy and justice and forgiveness, isn’t like ours. God’s love altogether, let’s say, is not on par with what we mean by that word. I’m not sure we can approximate in our limited hearts what that blazing Sacred Heart of Jesus is experiencing. The truth is, it’s not our job to feel how the landowner feels about the workers in his vineyard. What we are obligated to do is respect the bottom line: that the owner gets to do what he wants with his money. God’s freedom to be God is so often a point of contention with us mortals. We want God to reason and to act as we would. Yet God’s thoughts, and God’s heart, remain much, much bigger.
Name three things you would do differently if you were God. How does God’s sovereignty compel you to surrender the need to have things your way.

No estoy seguro de que podamos aproximarnos en nuestros limitados corazones a lo que está viviendo el Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Life Chain takes place on Sunday, October 1st, 2:30 – 3:30 pm on Lancaster Drive, between Sunnyview and Wolverine Streets. This is a silent vigil. Salem Right to Life is sponsor-ing this event 503-585-7856.
Pastoral Council Summary Discussion began concerning an English/Spanish Liturgical leader in the parish.
Security The parish has contracted with a local security company to be present on Sundays from 9 am – 3 pm. This will be a uniformed, unarmed, person. The parking lot and doors will be under surveillance. Pan handling is unsafe for everyone involved. Their first date of employment will be September 24th.
Parish Budget has been approved and is in operation. Income in this fiscal year is short by $44,000. If every parish family could give an additional $2.00 more per week, we would not have this shortfall. A full copy is available from the parish bookkeeper. The 2016-2017 fiscal year summary is on the back page of the bulletin and also reflects a $23,872 shortfall. School Budget is in operation but not approved until the end of September. All parish and school staff are receiving a 10% increase for the coming fiscal year. The parish has made an initial contact with the Archdiocese to engage in a “Offertory Improvement Program.” The exercise we did last Spring was not the best effort. We will do an offertory improvement this Fall.
School Report The floors, ceiling tile, electrical update, new counters in office and library are completed. Some work on the cafeteria remains to be done, a contract signed. All of this work has been accomplished because of a grant. Members of the Pastoral Council Gracie Rivera, chair, Laura Saavedra, Rafael Luna, Susan Reich, Viridiana Pozos, Dave Martinmaas, Wenseslao Castenada, Neil Mahoney, James Carter, Maria Palacio (school principal), Sue Minten (business manager), Fr. Fredy and Fr. Heuberger. The Pastoral Council meets the second Tuesday of the month.

Pre/K Faith Formation classes start TODAY at 10:15 am. The children will meet in the Library downstairs in Reedy Hall. Registration Forms will be available. Children who are age 4 or 5 by September 1 are eligible.
We are settling in to our new year of Faith Formation with over 350 children. The children will be learning their prayers a line at a time before they go to class then it will be repeated in their classes. Thank you for bringing the children on time.
We do have need of crossing guards on Monday and Tuesday evenings to get the children safely across the street to and from the Church. Please see Sheila or Sr. Guadalupe if you can help us.
If you have children with Special Needs and they are at least 7 years old, we can prepare them to receive the Sacrament of First Communion. Please see Sheila in the Religious Education Office to register. Classes begin October 3 at 7 pm, Conference Room C. Sr. Guadalupe will be teaching the classes.
Las clases de fe para niños en Pre / K comienzan HOY a las 10:15 am. Los niños se encontrarán en la biblioteca de Reedy Hall. Los formularios de inscripción estarán disponibles. Los niños que tengan 4 o 5 años antes del 1 de septiembre son elegibles.

High School Youth Night - THIS Wednesday, September 27th ~ 7:00-8:30 pm. If you have not registered yet, call Lisa ASAP to do so!
Deadline for registering for First Eucharist preparation and Confirmation preparation for high school students is October 4. You must set an appointment with Lisa, please do so ASAP. We expect those planning to receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist and the Sacrament of Confirmation to be actively involved in their Parish community in addition to regular Mass attendance, for at least one year prior to receiving the Sacrament. Active involvement includes: High School Youth Nights, Eight grade Religious Education classes, or Liturgical Ministry (Altar Server, choir, lector, etc.)

YA Bible Study – Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 pm. We look at the readings for the upcoming Sunday, reflect and pray together. We meet at Broadway Commons—1300 Broadway St. NE – Salem. It’s a great way to prepare for Mass!
Our NEW Young Adult Group for those right out of high school ~ 18-23 yrs. old ~ will meet THIS Wednesday, September 27th from 7:00-8:30pm in Conference Room A.
Our next Married Couples Night will be Monday, October 2nd. We gather once a month for fellowship, formation,

RCIA is a time to ask questions, reflect on Scripture and learn more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian in the world today. This process is for adults who may be interested in fully joining our faith community (“becoming Catholic”) and for those who are interested in completing the Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist). If you, or someone you know, is interested, you are welcome to join the process.
