Pricing of transmission constraints and ancillary services

Ancillary services are technical products, such as frequency response, voltage control, operating reserves or
black start capability, that are necessary to maintain the quality of electricity supply. Internationally there is a
growing interest in the economic evaluation aspects of ancillary services because of the trend towards increasingcompetition in generation markets, restructuring ofthe electric utilities, unbundling of activities and opentransmission access. This colloquium presents the principles ofpricing ancillary services and reviews
experiences in different countries, with emphasis on European systems as the EC moves towards a singlemarket
