Emerging Trendsin Pakistani Defence Industry

With contemporary warfare changing aswe speak, all defense related institutionsare arming themselves to cope with theserapidly changing tides. With a value ofUS$6.3 billion in 2009 the Pakistanidefense industry is anticipated to reachUS$10.4 billion by 2015. This is due tolarge scale investments to cope up withincreased internal instability and its activeparticipation in the war on terror. Expertspredict that these factors will continue todrive Pakistani defense expenditureseven further in the future, making it oneof the most thriving industries of Pakistan.Consequently, the Pakistanid e f e n s e i n d u s t r y i su n d e r g o i n g d r a m a t i cchanges and seeing manynew inclinations.

Modifications being seen areconcentrated efforts towardsmaking the industry as hightech as possible. Newtechnological advancementsare being undertaken by allmajor players in the industry. In this endeavor, there is alot of attention towardsproducts that are redefininghuman limits by the aid ofmachines. Machines that arecapable of taking over manytasks that are tedious or impossible forthe combatant, thereby increasingsecurity and efficiency.

Pakistan too, has been making effortsto boost itself in this regard and a vividlean of attention can be seen towardsthe development of the Unmanned AerialVehicle (UAV) sector. Pakistan can nowboast its capacity to develop, design andmanufacture UAVs indigenously and canproudly showcase a long list of publicand private companies actively workingin the sector, producing many suchproducts that are gaining increasingpopularity internationally.

Another popular trend in the past fewyears has been the burgeoning of a newgeneration of private defense companiesin Pakistan. These state of the artcompanies are becoming a vital force

along with the public companies towardsthe growth, recognition, and developmentof the Pakistani defense industry fortifyingits force and spreading Pakistans namethroughout the world. These companieswhich are over 100 in number havemolded themselves to meet thedeveloping requirements of the localmilitary, as well as avail exportopportunities to military and civiliansectors alike. Due to this they have beensuccessful in capturing and utilizing aniche market and contribute towards itsown growth and that of the Pakistani

defense industry.

Apart from ID some of the other leadingcompanies in this regard are Al-SonsIndustries (Pvt) Ltd, Saturma and EastWest Infinity (EWI). The public sectorgiants too are also prospering well andhave developed products that are gaininginternational commendation and risingpopularity. The respective companies areworking on producing quality productsthat are in every way at par withinternational standards but withconcentrat ion on keeping themeconomical. Among these is PAC Kamra;an aviation industry of Pakistancomprising of four factories. Majorproducts of the industry are aircraft, aeroengines, and spares development. It isalso the leader in producing severalaircrafts that are highly economical andfully integrated with state of the art

systems on board like fighter planes, jettrainers and primary trainers and utilityaircrafts, which have already provencredibility of its various features andequipment on board. Present at IDEAS-2012 there will be many such trendingproducts.

Pakistan has also come a long way frombeing dependent for sophisticatedweapons on imports, to becoming a majorplayer in the world arms industry. Theleading company in this regard is thePakistan Ordinance Factories (POF).

Being Pakistans premierarms and ammunit ionmanufacturing facility its e r v e s t h e d e f e n s erequirements of the countrysarmed forces, and caters tothe needs of domestic andexport markets. It producesseventy major productsincluding automatic rifles,light/medium and heavymachine guns, a wide rangeof mortar and arti l leryammunition, aircraft and anticraft ammunition, tank andanti tank ammunition, bombs,grenades, landmines,pyrotechnics and signalss t o r e s . A m o n g s t i t s

flourishing trends is the development ofpurpose made weapons to fulfill specificrequirements of arms forces of Pakistan. An example of this is the POF EYE aspecial purpose hand-held weaponssystem that can engage targets aroundcorners in built up areas and hostagesituations.

Owing to these rising trends and massive

leaps of developments in the Pakistani

Defense Industry, Pakistan's defense

exports have tripled to around $300

million all due to high quality products

priced perfectly to suit the pockets of the

buyers. In short becoming high-tech,

fostering self reliability, curtailing

dependence on foreign manufacturers

and boosting exports is the key goal

behind all prevailing trends in the

Pakistani Defense Industry.
