On Wednesday evening, in the elegant theatre of the Emirates Palace here in Abu Dhabi, five scholars and authors from Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Egypt, and China were presented with the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for their contributions to Arab culture. Established under the patronage and support of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), Sheikh Zayed Book Award has, since 2007, awarded outstanding

intellectuals for their writings that have “objectively enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life.” This year, 715 books were nominated for the award, which the advisory board judges were able to narrow down to five winners. With awards totaling AED 7 million, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award represents an impressively generous commitment to cultural life, a reflection of and tribute to the individual for which the Award is

named: after the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan (may God rest his soul) – founder for the United Arab Emirate Federation.

The award went to five “groundbreakers,” as Mr. Rashed Al Oraimi, the Secretary General of the Advisory Council of the Award, put it. The first award, for “Best Contribution to the Development of Nations,” went to Lebanese historian

Dr. Abdel Raouf Sinno (Ph.D, Free University of Berlin), for his masterly new history of the Lebanese Civil War, Harb Lubnan, 1975-1990, focusing on the fragmentation of the nation and its society over the course of the war, including “an in-depth scientific analysis of the socio-economic circumstances leading to the disintegration of the country’s structure, culture and economy,” as the award’s citation put it.

The “Best Book in Literature,” which has in the past gone to novelists such as Ibrahim al-Koni and Gamal al-Ghitani, this year went to Moroccan literature scholar Dr. Mohammad Miftah, for his study on poetry, titled Mafahim Muwassa‘ah li-naziriyyah sha‘riyyah (Broad Concepts in Poetic Theory), exploring poetry’s points of connection to linguistics, music and motion. Born in Casablanca, Dr. Miftah holds a PhD in literature and has won a number of awards for many of his previous books.

Afaf Tobbala from Egypt won the Award for “Best Book in Children’s Literature,” for her new book al-Bayt wa-l-Nakhlah (The House and the Palm Tree.) Dr. Afaf holds a Ph.D. in mass media from Cairo University, and the judges praised her book as “a sophisticated departure from the mainstream of children’s literature,” which “explores the inner lives of children in a masterful story-telling style.”

The “Best Book in Translation” award

went to Syrian scholar Mohammad Ziyad Kebbe (Ph.D., University of London), for his translation of Revolutionary Wealth by futurists Alvin and Heidi Toffler (Kebbe’s translated title: al-Tharwa wa Iqtisad al-Ma‘rifah.) Originally published by Random House in 2007, the book offers a provocative look at the future of technology and the knowledge economy. In its citation, the judges praise Kebbe’s use of “excellent language while preserving the essence of the original script.”

The final Award is for the “Cultural Personality of the Year,” an award not granted for a particular book, but for a prominent individual “who has contributed to the advancement of Arabic culture, embodies through his/her work tolerance, and promotes peaceful coexistence.” This year, the award went to Chinese Arabist Xhong Jikun, a Professor of Arabic at the University of Beijing, who is also head of the Chinese Society for Arabic Literature Studies. In his fifty-

year long career, Dr. Xhong has taught Arabic language and literature, written

on Arabic literary history, and translated several works from Arabic into Chinese, including novels by Naguib Mahfouz and Ihsan Abdul Quddus, poetry by Gibran

Khalil Gibran and modern Kuwaiti female poet Su‘ad al-Sabah, and the Thousand and One Nights. The judges credited Dr. Xhong with “implement[ing] one of the finest models of cultural dialogue” for his work in bringing Arabic literature into Chinese. In a brief filmed statement, Dr. Xhong said the award would “stimulate by brothers and sisters in dialogue, who are building bridges between both civilizations—Arabic and Chinese.”

Books and theSocial Media World

There is no doubt that social media is becoming more and more powerful, every day, in its ability to connect people and to spread the word about something new. A few years ago an airplane made an emergency “landing” on the Hudson River in New York, due to a malfunctioning engine. Do you know how the first information about this accident got to people, just a few seconds after it happened? Someone saw it from the street—or from the bridge—and tweeted it, with a picture!

Another strong point of social media is its “non-corporate” shape. It is personal. In fact, social media needs to become more personal. Consumers don’t want to have a relationship with a corporation, but with a person. Nobody likes to talk to a machine.

According to Farid Gasim, Director of Operations at the Dubai-based company Grafdom, the Arab region was a latecomer to social media—such as

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.—but it picked it up really fast in the last two years, especially in the corporate area, as people realized the benefits of having a profile on Twitter and Facebook.

Farid explains: “At last year’s session we had a full-house presentation and it was more like a ‘how-to’—an introductory session—on Twitter and Facebook; people were asking, ‘What is a Twitter?’ ‘Why only 140 characters?’ ‘How do I get on the Facebook?’ There was this notion that ‘bigger is always better.’ This year’s session is more for the advanced social media enthusiast, people who have been tweeting for a while, have an account on Facebook and are probably on LinkedIn.”

Now that people are more familiar with social media applications, the question is how to reach followers globally. Companies are just beginning to use social media in the Arab world, says Gasim, but they need to understand an important point: social media is not about

selling yourself, or even about selling your products. Social media is about relationships. It is about interaction. “It is a two-way dialogue. There is no space for the ‘I talk, you listen’ speech”, explains Gasim.

Another strength of social media is its world-wide access. And that means that you basically can be everywhere, whenever you want. A journalist can fly for almost 20 hours from Brazil to Abu Dhabi, while his followers on Twitter and his friends on Facebook interact with him the whole time, asking information about the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, asking for more pictures of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award… interacting all the time from the other side of the world!

To be successful in social media, companies need to find out a way to build connections with their followers. Instead of worrying about the number of their followers, they should be concerned with their quality. Only by interacting with

them can they get better quality.

And when those companies are publishers, Farid suggests: “Publishers should have their authors connecting with readers. They should have authors putting their personal profile on Twitter and Facebook, at least, and interacting with their readers.”

Another “secret” that Farid has for publishers is about segmentation. “It is not possible to have Twitter accounts, for example, about children’s books, fiction, and non-fiction and expect people to follow you. You need to be very segmented. A publisher needs to deliver content and try to understand its customer (i.e., the reader).”

The readers are out there, and social media is a very powerful tool to get them.

The Jordanian publishing house Al-Salwa has released their first App for iPad and iPhone this week during the ADIBF. Al Salwa Publishing is a children’s book publishing house that publishes only Arab authors. The App is based on the print book Anything which they released in 2010. The title tells the story of two children, Samr and Rami, who spend a fun afternoon play-acting and are delighted when their mothers return from shopping with a surprise. The App has a “Read it to me” option, where the kids can listen to the story while interacting with the illustrations on each page. It also has other options: Read it Myself, Song, Game and Craft-Making. This last option is a feature that is typical of Al-Salwa. It not only encourages children to use their motor skills, but also inspires them to be creative and come up with fun activities from the story.

about their new product:

How did this idea come to you?This is the future. E-books, digitized, enhanced books, and apps are the future, especially for children’s books. And we are hearing good news from western publishers about children’s books on the iPad. Books on these tablets have been very successful. Actually, they are an expansion on reading, and they aren’t replacing the paper book. Children are very intuitive about using these Apps and are very interactive. They learn a lot by touching and listening. So it encourages them to read. We believe that we should make our books available in all media and we started with this series of seven books for children from 3 years old and above. We believe that this is the future and that we should be there.

How difficult was it to get this App done?

We have a very good pool of talented people, especially in the technology sector, and we are partners with the digital agency MediaPlus Jordan – who worked with us previously on the production of interactive CDs. It ended up not being so hard, because they already knew us and understood our ideas very well.

How did you manage the costs?We are a very small publishing house so investing in something like this would be very hard, but we worked out a business agreement based on a kind of partnership so that we could make it work.

What do you expect in this area for the next five years?Tough question. Everything is still very unclear, but I believe that we are going to have much more competition and as a consequence, much more quality. And specifically for children’s books, I believe

these Apps will be a great tool for Arabic diaspora around the world, to teach their kids their language and their history.

How long do you think it will take for you to start making money with this kind of thing – Apps and/or eBooks?

Too difficult to answer, but probably—and this is just a guess!—three or five years. This App costs now US$0.99. And we just hope that this helps to get lots of downloads. We need to wait some time. But we hope that this grows a lot in not too long a time.

Children’s BookApp Has a Lot to Teach


A panel of professional women discussed translating work “From the Text to the Screen” to a full house on Thursday. The panel was hosted by Anna Soler-Pont, founder of Pontas Agency, a literary, film and TV agency based in Barcelona. Soler-Pont spoke with author, poet and filmmaker Annemarie Jacir, whose films have been Official Selections at Cannes—the most recent being “Salt of this Sea”, the first feature film by a Palestinian woman director—and Daniela Tully, Vice President of Development at Imagenation, in charge of creative affairs for regional Emirati film productions. As this panel was part of the professional programme, Soler-Point started with a basic reality: one in every four films starts off as a book. She explained that a film producer begins by buying the rights, “optioning” them from the owner (who is usually the author, but sometimes

the publishing company) and in essence, reserving them, usually for a period of 18 months during which the producer must “develop” the project, arrange financing, and hire a writer, director, and cast, after which the film goes into production. A slide show featured images of successful film adaptations, from The Kite Runner to Slumdog Millionaire (published as Q & A), as well as Midaq Alley by Egyptian Nobel prize winner, Nagub Mahfouz, which was not only made into a well-known Egyptian film, but was translated and transplanted into a Mexican setting in the film El Callejon de los Milagros, starring the Mexican-Lebanese actress Salma Hayek.Soler-Pont explained the advantage of an adaptation is that “you can always go back to the book. You might change writers, directors, actors, but you always have the book as your guide.”The women agreed that the writer of a

book must be willing to “have her baby destroyed” if the work is to be made into a film, as the two forms are completely different. A book is on a shelf, a film is fluid. Soler-Pont’s advice to authors was,

“If you can’t bear the process, if you’re not ready for the adventure, don’t sell

your book to a film producer!”Jacir concurred about the fluid nature of a film, saying that as the script comes to life, the movie changes. As a director, he often makes changes to dialogue or scenes on the set. With a stage play, the writer must approve any change to the text, but not in film. “You have to remain open to what is happening in front of you.”Jacir added that she often reads something that is so beautiful on the page that she wouldn’t want to turn it into a film. Tully finds that “it’s easier to start with an original story. Adapting a book involves more work but usually more intriguing stories are found in books.”A book is the first proof that the story works and that an audience exists for it, both of which help to get it produced. knows the freedom of going into “your own dark tunnel” but as a director, she also loves to find a great story.When asked what books they had read

recently that they would like to make into a films, Jacir cited Mornings in Jenin, an epic generational story about the Palestinian conflict. Tully agreed, “It’s a story I too would like to give out to the world.” Jacir added, “It’s a story not yet seen on film. It’s specific yet universal.”Tully said that from the business side, there have been two kinds of adaptations in the past decade: the bestselling novel made into a film which risking disappointing its numerous readers who have their own film in their heads and the solid, but little-known story, like Slumdog Millionaire or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, brought to wide attention by their being into films. And everyone agreed that you can’t simply follow trends, since they change too quickly and as a filmmaker, you have to stay true to what you want to do,When pressed as to why more films

aren’t made about the Arab experience, especially the Palestinian conflict, the women were blunt; making films requires money and the money for that kind of film is not coming from Hollywood and it’s also not coming from the Arab world. Back to basics, Soler-Pont explained that 10,000 Euros for 18 months was becoming a standard fee for an option but noted that the fee can be much smaller or much bigger. And Tully concluded the panel with the observation that dramas were taking precedence over comedy, but that what’s truly important is the human aspect to any story. She encouraged the audience, which clearly was made up of authors, both published and hopeful, to tap into their rich Arab tradition of storytelling.

A full house on a session that the organizers of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair considered a very significant one underlined the crucial issues around the interaction between illustrators, designers, authors and publishers. Specifically, how much creative freedom should an illustrator expect when working with a book publisher? On the other hand, how much creative control should a publisher yield to an illustrator, particularly since the publisher is ultimately responsible for making the book a success? In keeping with the focus on illustration at this year’s Fair, this panel explored key professional issues that all illustrators face.The panel was moderated by Chip Rossetti and featured two illustrators (Behzad Gharibpour, who has illustrated 16 books and teaches at the Vije School of Visual Communication in Tehran; and Claudia de Weck of Zurich, an illustrator of children’s books) and two publishers (Triena Noeline Ong, the Managing Editor of ISEAS Publishing in Singapore; and Hans ten Doornkaat, editor at Atlantis Books, a children’s book publisher in Zurich.) The session began with introductions and soon flowed into a rather animated discussion about the role of the designer and the publisher vis-à-vis a book. As ten Doornkaat summed up in his introduction,

almost everyone agreed that “Illustrations are as important as the text and vice versa.”As Triena Ong pointed out, however, the publisher’s role in producing a book definitely involves much more responsibility, since the risk-taking lies solely with the publisher. However, Claudia de Weck poignantly reminded the audience that it is “very difficult for an author or illustrator to live with a book they are not happy about.” The discussion became more animated once the panelists began discussing their personal experiences with certain books and authors, and various cases where there was discussion and sometimes disagreement. Although a publishing contract may state in black and white that the publisher has the final say over a book’s jacket, title and illustrations, the whole process of developing a book cover or a picture book should involve team work. It all boils down to human psychology and how well the various people involved communicate. The case gets further complicated with the sharp distinction between fiction and nonfiction books. Almost everyone on the panel agreed that there is more leeway for fiction when it comes to illustration and design. However, as ten Doornkaat pointed out, that makes the issue of jacket design

ever more subjective. Ms. Ong discussed a very interesting example wherein a disagreement with the author about the title and cover of a certain book prompted her to send four different proposed designs to major bookstores in Singapore in order to get feedback. Not surprisingly, each bookstore came back with a different favorite jacket.Another issue that was raised was the subject of whether to let an author talk directly to an illustrator. Given the tendency of both authors and publishers to micromanage the art of illustration, some panelists warned against it. However, as ten Doornkaat very generously put it, “If the publisher plays the role of a referee between the author and illustrator/designer, it is a dangerous and almost wrong practice. However, if it is seen as teamwork it is bound to be productive.”The audience, mostly consisting of publishers and illustrators, was also given a feast of beautiful examples of the work of the two illustrators on the panel displayed on the screen. The discussion was a very lively one and left everyone wanting more.

Since its debut a few years ago, the television program “Million’s Poet” (Sha‘ir al-Miliyun) has been a smash hit in the Arab world. Produced by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, the show is an American Idol-style contest, in which contestants compete in reciting their own poems in Arabic for a panel of judges over the course of several rounds. The poems are in the nabati style—a traditional poetic genre from the Arabian peninsula, composed in the spoken Bedouin dialect of Arabic. The top prize is more than $1 million US: not surprisingly, competition is fierce.

In April 2010, Saudi poet Hissa Hilal made it to the final round, as one of the five finalists. In her appearances on the show, she won a lot of fans—and generated a lot of controversy—with her poems, which directly criticized those Muslim clerics who she says promote a backwards-looking version of Islam, encourage terrorism, and unfairly place divisions between men and women. Appearing on television wearing the niqab (the veil covering the full face, other than her eyes), Hilal became something of a celebrity for her outspoken stance. “It was great how people responded,” she recalls.

But although she was a favorite with many in the audience, and did very well with the judges (making it to the eighth round), her poetry also attracted negative criticisms: “Because of the ideas in the poetry, because I was talking about extremism, some people were against me. It was like a rush of attacks against me,” she says. “Some people were saying, ‘Why is she attacking sheikhs and fatwas? Why is this woman talking like this? She’s a woman, not a man.’ Maybe 55% of the responses were against me. But I was happy about the 45% who did defend me, because one of them is worth 1000 others attacking

me.” Despite the controversy, she ended up wining third place, and taking home the equivalent of $800,000 US—enough for her family to buy the new house she wanted. (As with shows like American Idol, the voting is done by a mix of a panel of judges and viewers voting by text message.)

Her full name is Hissa Hilal al-Malihan al-‘Unzi, a name that reflects her family origin in the Malihan tribe in northwest Saudi Arabia, near Jordan. Born in a Bedouin environment, she now lives in Riyadh with her husband and four children. Hilal first began writing poetry when she was 13, and remembers hiding her early poems in her room so her parents wouldn’t find out. It was until years later, when she published her first book of poetry, that her parents learned that their daughter was a poet.

As an adult, she worked as an editor and correspondent for a number of Saudi and Gulf newspapers, such as Gulf Panorama and the Kuwaiti-based magazine Hayatna (Our Life.) She edited the poetry section of the Saudi magazine Hajis, and for three years, was the poetry editor for the London-based -Arab newspaper al-Hayat. She writes poems in formal written Arabic (fusha) as well as nabati poetry. “I write nabati because I know this culture very well. Tribal people know it very well.”

In fact, despite her outspoken verses, she got a favorable reaction from family and friends: her husband—who is also from a Bedouin tribal background—didn’t get any criticism for letting his wife appear on television, and as Hilal puts it, “Most of the tribal people supported me—even the old men and women liked me.”

In addition to her television fame, Hilal has also found time to edit a collection

of older poetry by Bedouin on the subject of divorce. The collection, published by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and

Heritage (ADACH), is titled Divorce and Kholu‘ Poetry. “Tribal women used to recite poetry requesting a divorce, and when their husbands heard it, they would divorce them.” In other words, poetry was not merely a work of art, but played a vital purpose in relations between men and women, and in allowing women to express themselves in a formal, public fashion.

“You used to be able to express yourself in this culture,” Hilal explains. “You could say to a man that you hated him, and he would divorce you. Now, it’s impossible to find a woman who writes poems about divorce, or how she feels about her husband. No way.” Since this tradition of poetry-as-divorce-request has died out, the poems Hilal has collected are historical: the oldest is more than two centuries old, while the most recent dates to forty years ago. The poems are by fifty female poets from different tribes.

While Hilal acknowledges the benefits that modernity has brought to Bedouin life—from schools to formal government institutions—she regrets that something has been lost in the transition to the modern world: “Arabs have changed… There is a new type of culture, and you don’t find real Arabs now. We used to be simple, we used to be free. There was a good spirit in Arab culture: there are good schools and mosques now, but something is gone. It’s like somebody has come and stepped on roses. The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage (ADACH) announced the release of the first edition of the series of the “Hamdoon” character illustrated stories during the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2011. This book is the first of the Hamdoon project publications for this type of stories. It is the first story illustrated by an Emirati artist. The story’s script is written by a team of Emirati innovators.

The Hamdoon book is available in the Fair this year at a stand where picture stories are sold and gift bags are distributed to children. Visitors can register on the Hamdoon Facebook page through the stand which is located beside the children's corner at the Fair. The walls of the Fair are decorated with the Hamdoon illustrations. Hamdoon welcomes children in the Fair.

As part of the events, there is a daily draw on five Hamdoon illustrated books signed by the creative author of the character Abdullah Al Sharhan. Together with the children, Fazaa volunteers also would take part in the organization of these activities.

Hamdoon is a loved Emirati child at the age of six. He has a natural, enthusiastic and intelligent character. He is passionate about knowing everything, and never stops asking. Hamdoon is adventurous, does not hesitate to take risks, and does not like to sit behind closed doors. He does not stop searching and exploring, and likes to unravel mysteries.

In the story, Hamdoon and his twin sister Hamdah go back to Abu Dhabi on a holiday with their grandparents. For the first time, Hamdoon begins to explore and get acquainted with the Emirati customs and traditions. He enjoys these traditions through comic situations with his family members and new friends.

The first edition of the illustrated series includes interesting adventures for Hamdoon that that can be enjoyed by all family members. The book is published in

two editions, Arabic and English.

The Hamdoon project, one of the strategic projects of ADACH, is aimed at promoting the Emirati culture and heritage among the young generations. This is achieved through the production of a cartoon series for Hamdoon and his friends. The first season of the cartoon series will be launched later this year. The project also involves the use of Hamdoon character in several activities of communication with children, and through ADACH's educational initiatives. As part of this, ADACH will publish several booklets that cover the elements of culture and heritage by using Hamdoon as a guide for children in these booklets.

This is similar to the Young Archaeologist programme organized by ADACH in Al Ain museum, and the series of booklets published by the authority about the tangible and intangible elements of heritage, such as “An Illustrated Journey with the Camel”, “An Illustrated Journey with the Falcon”, and others. All these are activities that contribute to getting the young generations absorb the Emirati culture and heritage in a funny, interesting educational framework.

ADACH's sponsorship of the project comes as part of its priorities to support young Emirati artists. An Emirati team works on the Hamdoon project, involving the author of the character Abdullah Al Sharhan and others who work on writing the story and the script, in addition to the voices of the series actors.

A cacophony of excitable children’s voices could be heard throughout the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre as over 7000 children ranging from ages three upwards and university students swept through the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2011. Students from over 187 schools, technical colleges and universities - predominantly

from the Emirates of Abu Dhabi, Western Region and Al Ain - flooded through the doors for an educational trip with a difference. On Wednesday, Abu Dhabi International Book Fair celebrated the French Culture by holding “A Day in France” activity programme. Children from all ages

were seen around the Fair eating crepes and croissants, as well as participating in activities involving a number of internationally renowned French writers and illustrators.French illustrator Nicole Lambert, renowned for her comic strip Les Triples in the magazine Madame Figaro, entertained

many Emirati children with her thoughts about art and illustration on the Kitab Sofa at lunchtime. Benoit and Emmanuelle de Saint Chamas, authors of “ L’Inconnue due Louvre” (“The Secret of the Louvre”) also read to children under the age of five on the Kitab bus outside the venue.
