Does Talk - Louise Schroeder, Does Drove 233 President

To Officers and

Members:

Elks carry forth

our nation’s

patriotic tradi-

tion

G o d b l e s s America! How often we say this and what mean-ing is conveyed in those three

words. “God” – the Supreme Being in whom a belief is required to be a Member of our great Order; “Bless” – to bestow good of any kind upon, to protect or guard from evil; and “America” – our country, our homeland. And this July we celebrate the 237th birthday of our great nation. What did our forefathers think as they looked down on this young nation that they so carefully tended in its early days? There must have been many things that brought a smile to their hearts and let them know their sacrifices were not made in vain. As Elks, we carry forth that patriotic tradition of our founders to en-sure the safety of our nation and its people. We are passionate about our way of life and

our families, and we cannot envision living any place else on this earth. Next time you say those three words – "God Bless America" – stop to remember all of the people who have contributed to the formation of our coun-try and its image as a "Beacon of Hope" in the world. Be proud of this heritage. Happy birth-day, America! As we begin our Grand Lodge Session in Reno, I want to welcome each new Officer and thank you for your dedication to our Or-der. We have a lot of work to do to continue the excellent traditions of our organization, and I know all of you will be up to the task. Remember to think creatively, implement de-cisively and ask for help where needed. To-gether, we will continue to grow and prosper in this great Order. Venita and I thank all of you for your sup-port and hospitality through this past year as we traveled through this great nation. We can’t begin to tell you how much we appreci-ate all of the hard work that you do for your local Lodges, major projects and our wonder-ful Order in general. You are all truly “Beacons of Hope” in our lives and in the lives of those whom you touch. It was a privi-lege to serve as your Grand Exalted Ruler and First Lady. Thank you all and God bless.

Does Members Summer is here at last but still the rain is with us. In June, the Drove members served pie and ice cream at the first summer night of Music in the Park. The Elks also pre-sented their Flag Program. Great

German music by the Concord Singers from

New Ulm was an evening highlight. Thanks to the Elks, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boy Scout Troop 246, Na-tional Guardsmen, and Mayor Steven Cook for the very patriotic program. Thanks to the members who baked and served all the pie. Thanks to Chuck Draeger for serving the ice cream. The night was a success for the Does. No Does meeting will be held in July or Au-gust. A summer picnic will be held at a later date to be announced. Have a great summer and visit the Elks Lodge and enjoy the patio for some outdoor fun.

A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old college professor. Conversation soon turned to complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and retuned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal—some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite. He told his guests to help themselves to the coffee. After everyone had a cup of cof-fee in hand, the professor said, “If you no-ticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain, cheap ones. While it is only normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your p ro b lems and stress. Be assured that the cup adds

no quality to the coffee. In most cases it’s just more expensive; and in some cases, even hides what you drink. What all you really wanted was the coffee, not the cup. But you consciously went for the best cups… And then you began eyeing each other’s cup. Now consider this…Life is the Coffee; the jobs, money and positions in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life. And the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live. Sometimes…by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Savor the coffee, not the cup. The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything. Live simply. Speak kindly. Care Deeply. Love generously. The richest person is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least.

The Elks were joined by representa-tives from the American Legion Post 96 , Veterans of Foreign War Post 906 and Auxiliaries, National Guard, Memorial Rifle Squad, Boy Scout Troop 246, and Mayor Steven Cook. As PER John Jennings read the History of the Flag, members of Boy Scout 246 presented each flag to the audience. Mayor Cook presented the flag, which was flown over the nation’s capitol, to a member of the National Guard for flag raising with the audience singing of the Stars Spangled Banner. The program concluded with the Memo-rial Rifle Squad’s 21-gun salute and “Taps” played by Wally Pikal.

Current Resident or

Can't always be a saint, I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent,

Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep.

Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place,

The Soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass. 'Step forward now, Soldier, How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said, 'No, Lord, I guess I have not.

Because those of us who carry guns,

Among the people here. They never wanted me around,

Except to calm their fears If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand.”

There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the Soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you Soldier, You've borne your burdens well.

Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell.'

On June 2 Stan Scieszka, Na-tional Service Committee Chair, called Bingo with the help of Dennis Schroeder at the St. Cloud Veteran’s Administrative Medical Center. Karen Scieszka and Louise Schroeder served snacks and sodas to the 30-40 participants. It was a pleasant day of sunshine and fun for the veterans.
