Huish
Hello and welcome to the first newsletter of this
academic year. It has been a very busy first term at Huish with a
large number of extra-curricular activities getting started, with great attendance; lots of successful sporting fixtures; and over
10,000 hours of lessons having taken place already.
I told students at the beginning of the year that I expected a lot
from them this year in terms of working hard in lessons and being resilient to challenges. We only see them for 13% of their time in
a school year, which is a small amount of time to fit a lot of learn-
ing and progress into. I must say as half term approaches that the overwhelming majority of students have responded incredibly well and have demonstrated a real desire to learn. For
those who are reluctant or uncooperative, we are taking swift action.
Resilience is a very important part of what we do at school. As adults we have all had to learn
so many things as we have aged and moved from school to work. We don’t seem to worry as adults about making mistakes, we just know that it is part of developing and getting
better. In school it is often the case that students are afraid to make mistakes as they don’t want to stand out as getting things wrong. The message this year has been clear – making a
mistake is not failure, it is a fantastic learning opportunity.
Last week we held a non-uniform day in aid of Young Minds, a charity that works to support
young people with mental health problems, something we have seen on the increase in schools in recent years. I think there are many factors to consider when it comes to mental
health in young people such as social media, peer pressure and perceived appearance. I am also convinced that resilience is a significant factor, being able to overcome problems and
challenges is such an important part of life. Adopting a growth mindset is certainly one way in
which we can all look at problems in a different way. Approaching problems with a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset has been proven to support progress and success in
students. Knowing that when you see a problem that you can’t do initially, but that if you work hard you will be able to do it in time, is a fantastic way of developing confidence and self
-esteem. Many of the staff have taken on challenges this year, something they have not pre-viously done, to demonstrate that we can all learn new things, or get better at something we
already do. My challenge is to learn conversational French, something I’ve not had much prac-tice of since I went to school. I keep getting things wrong, but am enjoying the challenge of
learning something new. Later in the year, my aim is to begin an assembly in French (with English translation), something I’m keen to do – once I’ve got past the “can I have a room for
two nights” section of the course!
Enjoy the half term break.

We are pleased to announce that work has commenced this week on
the refurbishment of the Huish Leisure swimming pool. The £1.1m
project will enclose the existing lido pool, thus providing all-year round
indoor swimming facilities, including new, accessible changing areas.
This will improve the facility for all Academy students, users of the
leisure centre and the wider community.
The project is set to be completed by Easter 2018.
The community fundraising for this project continues, please contact
Huish Leisure on 01458 251055 for more information.

Huish goes to Nice Huish Episcopi has a well established exchange with the Collège Matisse in
Nice. Somerset is a long way from the French Riviera but we are closing the
gap! Twenty students from year 9, 10 and 11 went to Nice in September. After one night in a hotel, our students finally
met their French counterparts and spent five nights with their guest families, complete immersion guarantied! Some had even met before and it was like meet-
ing old friends! Toby Morton, who is in year nine, tells us more about it.
“My experience on the Nice Exchange
was very good. It was like no other trip I’ve ever been on, I really liked
the wide variety of activities from our trip to Monaco and the Musee Ocean-
ographique, to snorkelling (with jelly-
fish inviting themselves to the party...)!
Also, staying with a French student and his family was a great new
experience. My exchange family were really nice and welcomed me into
their home. It was amazing to experi-ence a foreign culture in a way that I
never had before. This was a very new thing for me.
The first full day in France was really special. We visited Monaco and the
Musee Océanographique and it gave us a clearer idea about the Mediterranean.
The city of Monaco was beautiful and it was strange
to see the contrast between the iconic history and the rich parts - super cars and luxury apartments.
Especially since they almost blended together. Later on that day after visiting a specialist perfume factory
and the village of “Eze,” we were introduced to our exchange students. I think everyone was nervous at
this point. I spent my first night with my family, they took me into their home and made me feel as com-
fortable as possible. One of the strangest parts for me, was living with people that couldn’t really speak
my language. It made some simple tasks more challenging but I learnt so much through it.

The city of Nice itself was superb. The
modern Main Street and the Old Nice
were both amazing in different ways. It
meant a lot of walking but it was very
worth the strive! The views from the
château, the rocky hill dominating Nice,
were the reward for the strenuous
climb. The beach along the “Promenade
des Anglais” was really stunning and
the pleasant weather was mildly warm
and sunny for the most part.
One of my favourite days was Friday when
we went kayaking and explored the
promenade of Cannes. Although I got stung
by a jellyfish, I thoroughly enjoyed the
activities that came along with this day. It
was a great end to the trip.
Overall, I really enjoyed the Nice Exchange,
it was an amazing chance to experience the
culture and see some of the highlights of the
French Riviera.”
In March, the exact dates still need to be fine tuned, we will enjoy the return visit
from Matisse. About twenty six French students will be with us for five days. For the
last four years, it has been a great time with the opportunity to make new friends. I
often hear how our Huish students keep in touch with their French guests via Insta-
gram or Snapchat. This is quite a unique way to open up to people and really make
a new sort of experience, so if you would like to be part of this exchange, do get in
touch. We need guest families in March and the next visit to Nice is planned for
September 2018!

During the final week of the 2017 summer term,
over 220 Year 10 students headed out with a mix
of trepidation and excitement to complete a five
day work experience placement. For many stu-
dents this was their very first step into the world of
work.
A lot of hard work and effort had been put into
organising the placements, which students are
required to find themselves with support from
tutors. Some were required to write formal
applications and others had to attend interviews
before being offered the placements.
Huish Episcopi students were to be found across
the county in a wide range of industries – Business,
Retail, Agriculture, Creative Arts, Engineering to
name a few. Students were placed within an
amazing array of schools, hospitals, animal
charities, shops, restaurants, design agencies, law
firms, armed forces, sports facilities etc and teach-
ing staff enjoyed the opportunity to visit them out
in the workplace.
Despite the inevitable first day nerves, Year 10s
returned to the academy feeling very proud of
their achievements and feedback has
demonstrated the positive value of this activity.
Several students have been offered part-time
work as a direct result of the placement and
some even walked away with the offer of an
apprenticeship!
Here are some quotes from the students and em-
ployers:
“X asks lots of questions which is good to see. She
shows initiative and gets on with tasks after only
being shown once” (Veterinary Practice)
“I have had a really good week and learnt a lot
of skills especially working with the
customers” (Café)
“X has been brilliant – has shown initiative and is
very mature and can work independent-
ly” (Primary School)
“Placement is ok but school is better!” (IT
Consultancy)
“Very pleased with X’s work ethic and attitude.
Best work experience student I have ever had”
“Very willing and adaptable” (Electrical)
“I feel very lucky to have had this placement and
opportunity” (Design placement)
“I gained an appreciation of the amount of work
that goes into making a product/costing/
restaurant/kitchen and how to make a coffee! This
is not a repetitive job.”
“Student was very enthusiastic and is now keen to
apply for the apprenticeship scheme when he
finishes sixth form” (EDF – Hinkley Point)
“Brilliant representative of the school” (Theatre)
“Enjoyable experience and a good
laugh” (National Trust)
“Daft as a brush but very personable and
polite” (Armed Forces)
“I explored many different parts of the business -
both office and technical and learnt a lot. Every-
thing was really well organised and I had a great
time.” (Cheese Producer)
“Very n ice , sweeping takes some
time” (Restaurant)
“I feel the placement has gone very well and
encouraged me to think about going into the
sales department of the business” (Motor Com-
pany)
We are very grateful to employers and local
businesses for hosting student placements and
also to parents who supported the application
process and managed the inevitable transport
logistics.
Provisional date for Year 10 work experience next
year is Monday 16th July– Friday 20 July.

My mind has created
By Mia Appleby and Madeleine McAusland
I want to be set free from the cage
My mind has created
It holds me back with the claws
My mind has created
It keeps me captive in this nightmare
My mind has created
It feels my body with the thoughts
My mind has created
It destroys my heart with the daggers
My mind has created
Everyday I wear the same fake smile
My mind has created
I wait for someone to break down the walls
My mind has created
My soul has been eaten by the darkness
My mind has created
My mind has created all these things for me
And I just want to be
Free
Freedom
Fly like a bird
Run like a cheetah
Everyone is free
Everyone is free
Doves will fly
Oceans will flow
Meadows will thrive
Prisoners will flee
Flowers will sway, birds will fly
Only if you let them free
You’re a free runner if….
You can fly free if….
You’ll be as free as a dove if….
If you believe in….
Freedom!
