Rector’s Reflection: “Mewsing”

Hi everyone! Mama Ceci [Duke, Rector]

has been running around so much this

month that she asked me to write her

newsletter article. (Well, I'm dictating to

her). Where to start?

Things in the office are always interesting.

Mama Ceci starts everyday with big plans

to organize the stuff on her desk and on

the table in the corner; but, by the end of

the day, the only thing she has cleaned

for sure is my kitty pan. Sometimes I hear

her mumbling that most of her job is

cleaning up messes, but don't tell her that

I told you that.

The new Mama, Jody [Greenwood, Asso-

ciate Rector], has a nice box in her office

that I like to sleep in when Mama Ceci

isn't having company. Jody is a big help to

Mama Ceci because she is a good planner

and knows when to say when. She is also

very smart and knows all about liturgy

and theology and the things you learn in

seminary.

Luis [Cordova, Sexton] is one of my favor-

ite people. He calls me Gato, which

means cat in Spanish. Actually, he calls

me Gato Grande, but I don't understand

why. Luis is the first person I usually see

each day. He is very good at fixing things

and I often hear Mama Ceci say, "I just

don't know what I'd do without him."

I don't get to see him as much as the oth-

ers, but when I do, Father Jeff [Cave, As-

sociate Rector] is always planning some-

thing special for the Hispanic congrega-

tion. He and Mama Nora [Cruz-Díaz, Dea-

con] were very excited about the celebra-

tion of Our Lady of Guadalupe. There

were so many colorful flowers and special

food. Mama Ceci told me all about it. I

wished she had shared some with me.

There is a new man that comes to staff

meetings. His name is Richard [Moore,

Interim Choir Director], but I've heard a

lot of people calling him Scrooge lately.

He seems much too jolly and fun to have

such a weird name like Scrooge. And, be-

sides, he likes to sing and direct music to

worship God. I think the name Richard

suits him better.

The two friends I see the most are Mama

Robin [Miller, Bookkeeper] and Mama

“Thanksgiving”

Magda wrote this in the season of

Thanksgiving to share with us. It is

from her heart directly. As she says,

“this document written using my still

limited English vocabulary and

grammar,” and as such, is presented

unedited.

THANKSGIVING DAY =

DIA DE DAR GRACIAS

Prior to write and share with you my

reasons and motives for Give

Thanks, I did a search about when

this was born in this country and

why is so special. Knowing and un-

derstanding this, I’ve decided to

share with you my experience to

celebrate.

I’m an immigrant who give thanks to

this country and its people that has

given me the opportunity to learn

the language and culture, but the

most significant is that through

Christ Church Episcopal my life took

a total turn as I reacquainted my

faith in God and myself and went

back to reconcile with the human

race. Yes, I am now fully convinced

that God is exists and cares for me.

Today I know that God has always

been there for me but I was very

aware of myself, of my personal

feelings, my earthly things, that I

could not “see or feel Him.” Today I

believe in angels. Yes (those beings

that child’s mind imagine as beauti-

ful ethereal and big wings), and that

today daily life has shown me that

they have appeared to me in the

time, place and right moment and to

whom I’ve learned to recognize in

my day to day and I realized that

they are also flesh and blood. Some

of my “angels” yet they have names!

SANDY, who allowed me to share

her home, supports me, respects

and cares me like a part of her own

family. She is for me like a mother,

sister and friend. Hmmm, although it

is fair to say that sometimes I be-

have like her mother! Oooops!

God, in His great wisdom, showed

me in a dream and in one of His

mysterious ways of how His word

and will works in this world, and alt-

hough the biggest pain, suffering

and deepest sadness were involved,

He, in His infinite goodness and

compassion for human suffering fac-

ing the incomprehensible, also gave

me “the remedy and the rag” (as we

say in my country), and although I

did not know then, Christ Church

was “His Instrument” and FATHER

JEFFREY the Guardian Angel who

with his wisdom, his humanity, his

commitment and effort, his love for

our people (in this case, Hispanics)

and specially with patience, under-

standing and tolerance, has rescued

my positive qualities (already for-

gotten), those which every human

have found over the past few months

is that this approach has fallen short,

with neither music offering receiving

enough time and consistent attend-

ance to produce the hoped-for music

ministry.

So, while it was an experiment worth

trying, after talking with Lindsay and

Ceci, we do not believe that it is the

best long-term solution.

Consequently, in the coming weeks

Lindsay and I will be reaching out to

parents of choir and chimer age chil-

dren to explore other options. The

hope is that we can find a time each

week for Choir rehearsals (for older

children and “Joyful Noise”) as well as

Chimers, so we can energize this min-

istry in the months ahead. What a joy

it will be to have children’s heavenly

voices as a recurring part of our Sun-

day worship!

A message from

The Rev. Jody Greenwood

In my time at Christ Church, nothing is

more apparent than the joy that sing-

ing children brings to our congrega-

tion! When Christ Church made the

decision to hire Lindsay Patten as our

Children’s Choir Director last year, the

hope was that we would develop a

Children’s Choir to participate in Sun-

day worship on a regular basis, en-

hancing our worship while sharing the

gift of music.

One struggle we have had in bringing

this to fruition is the understandably

busy schedules of parents in the con-

gregation, which made a mid-week

evening practice problematic. So, this

past Fall we tried an experiment and

decided to use the time during Chil-

dren’s Liturgy on Sunday morning not

only for worship, but also for choir

and chimer practice time. What we

Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe

On Dec. 11 and 12, 2013, our His-

panic congregation celebrated the

Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Known as Our Lady of Guadalupe,

she was given the title Our Lady of

the Americas by Pope John Paul II.

Hundreds of Latino communities in

the Episcopal Church celebrate this

uniquely American Christian festi-

val . The Episcopal Church worships

in Spanish all over the continental

US and in Episcopal and Anglican

Dioceses from Mexico to the tip of

South America.

On Wednesday, Dec. 11, the cele-

bration started with a lighted candle

procession, from the Youth Center

to the Nave. Litanies were sung

along the way. The shrine of the Vir-

gin was carried by four men from

the Hispanic congregation. It was

decorated by beautiful and colorful

paper flowers, prepared by one of

the ladies of the congregation. The

altar was also decorated with flow-

ers. The history of Juan Diego (the

Aztec convert to whom the Virgin

Mary appeared near Mexico City in

1531) and Our Lady of Guadalupe

was read by various members of the

congregation. Three of our tiny boys

dressed in the traditional indigenous

costume of Juan Diego. Throughout

the service, the Mariachis, accompa-

nied sometimes by the parishioners,

sang Mexican songs dedicated to the

Virgin.

After the last song, we all gathered

in the Parish Hall to continue with

the celebration. We enjoyed Mexi-

can dishes provided by some mem-

bers of the congregation. Everything

was delicious—you can ask Ceci, she

was there with us. We had a special

surprise, Baby Jesus was among us.

On Thursday, Dec. 12, we celebrated

the mass to the Virgin. On this night,

she was crowned and a robe was

placed over her. There were flowers

in her honor. We sang songs to the

Virgin, this time accompanied by

John Burke, the Hispanic congrega-

tion musician. It was a very solemn

and beautiful service.

For the next 12 months, the Virgin

will stay with a different family each

month. Members of the congrega-

tion sign up to have the Virgin at

their home. Flowers are always sent

with the Virgin. She will be back for

the celebration of her feast next

December 2014.

being is born. AAAH! But I must to

tell you, as many of you have no-

ticed yet, I am “the pebble in his

shoe and perhaps one of the biggest

or heavier tasks of his ministry.” Jeff

with his shy smile, always chivalrous,

gentle, wise and prudent when

speaking, transforms me from a Lion

into a gentle lamb every time that

my “frustrations and demons” come

to the surface. Not an easy task right

Jeff??? Hahahahaha.

CECI, who one day (perhaps one of

the few that she faces everyday),

with just one sentence she melted

the armored suit I used to wear be-

fore leaving the house (my safe

space). But a hard and shocking

event happened to me one day of

December 2011, that day I was liter-

ally alone, without my boys, my par-

ents or brothers and for sure in need

of “something” to lay or hold, a

shoulder to mourn or even just a

paper towel to hide my face

(because that day and at night

hours, believe me, I really looked

worse than a Halloween character),

instead any of that, a pair of open

arms like angel’s wings held me,

sheltered me and clothed me like

the loving arms of a mother…..It was

yours Ceci!!

GAIL AND ORIE who remind me that

love can survive over the time.

BETH, professional, knowledgeable,

willing, disciplined and discreet. NIK-

KI, generous. Always behind the

scenes but always there with no in-

tention for starring. CAROLYN, sensi-

ble and humane. CHRISTINE, sweet

and apparently fragile but strong like

an oak tree. PEOPLE OF CHRIST

CHURCH, Anglos and Hispanics,

whom with just a “hello (hola), good

morning or noon (Buenos dias o tar-

des),” or even with just a smile feed

my spirit and my desire and inten-

tions to “help to make possible.”

But, specially I thank those whom do

not like or tolerate me, ignore or

evade me. Yes, THANKS YOU, be-

cause by doing so, you show me the

long way that I still have to go

through for taking the opportunity

to keep learning and trying and

thanking God for making me so im-

perfect and you’re giving me to take

advantage of the Big Gift that He

gave us, “FREE WILL.” Jesus Christ,

Almighty and perfect was also re-

jected, judged and crucified…..so, I

“mere mortal” that even knowing

that I’m tough as a harness thank

you because I learned that I’m not

unbreakable , that I can’t just do

prayer for myself so that my heart

will not be shielded again and keep

my mind open and receptive to my

eyes no longer see the needs of the

world and strengthen my spirit with

life lessons for teaching me as much

that it serve to help others, so I get

up when I fall and keep me praying

so I never forget that this is me, who

Beth [Holland, Parish Administra-

tor]. Mama Robin is good with num-

bers. She likes to add and subtract

(well, actually, we all like it best

when she is adding). Mama Robin

loves animals very much so she is

especially friendly to me. For a dog

person, she is actually very nice.

Seems like Mama Beth is always

busy in the office. She can do most

anything. She is a publisher, a me-

chanic, a counselor, and a purveyor

of treats. She must really love to

work because that is what she al-

ways does. Sometimes I enjoy

snoozing in the box in her office.

My friends in the Thrift Shop keep

me company on the weekends. Ma-

ma Ivonne [Obelar, Thrift Shop

Manager] and all the volunteers sure

do sell a lot of stuff, but they never

seem to have any extra cat food

around. But, even so, I enjoy watch-

ing them set up nice displays and

welcome customers to the store.

As you can see, there is never a dull

moment in the office at Christ

Church. All in all, I think I'm a pretty

lucky cat to be around people who

care about their jobs, work hard,

and are smart enough to appreciate

cats. I'm looking forward to more

new adventures in the New Year.

I am and where I come from. Proud

of my learning and understanding of

what I’ve found, like: that people

sing not only because of happiness,

or cry because of sadness; that fear

not always means being coward but

a warning to be cautious; that in a

full glass no longer have room for

Thanksgiving

more and for those whom until to-

day are still in need of warmth for

the soul but they not even have

realize it.

FOR ALL THESE MANY LESSONS,

OPPORTUNITIES AND BLESSINGS

I THANK GOD AND I CAN SAY: I’VE

FAILED AND I’VE WRONG BUT

PLEASED TO HAVE TRIED AND

SURELY I’LL FAIL AND WRONG BUT I

AM ALSO VERY SURE THAT I DO NOT

GIVE UP EASILY !! SO, THANKS

God Bless You, Every One

[The Christ Church Players presented Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 to a sold-out crowd at the church.]

What can I say?

The Set Crew [Bruce Halliburton, Scott McCue, Mike Rice, Brook Sizemore], Conall [Furey, sound], and Brian [Maruscsak, lighting] made it all happen;

The Merchants [Walt Thompson, Channing Haskell] charmed and amused;

The Fundraisers [Pam South, Betsy Pickren] had me reaching for my wallet;

Fred's Maid [Christine Haskell] brought us home;

The Partygoers [Sandra Durbin, Greg Jordan, Dennis Wilson, Misty Wilson] made me wish I was part of the merry company;

The Toy Shop Dancers [Sam Baker, Patti Broomfield, Lea Costas, Ashlee Fee, Emma Friedrichs, Sarah Friedrichs, Annabel Lee, Ella Matthews, Alden Pridgen, Mamie Pridgen, Carson Shue, Callie Wilson, Ashton Wilson] had me believing I was eight and my dolls had come to life;

The Turkey Boy [Gary Gordon] made me want to yell: “Hellooo, my fine fellow!”;

The brave Owner of a Scant Young Nose [Lea Costas] charmed and de-lighted;

The Charwoman [Ange Justice] and Old Joe [David Duke] had me won-dering if I had adequately secured my purse;

The chorus [Tracey Rice, director; Newell Baker, David Duke, Beth Jonsson, Jenn Jordan, Greg Jordan, Kathy Manning, Judy Moore, Nancy Morrissey, Charlie Post] stirred a joyful noise in my heart;

The Ghost of Christmas Past [Suzanne Collins] reminded me of MY past;

The Ghost of Christmas Future [Dennis Wilson] made me LISTEN;

The Ghost of Christmas Present [Paul Thurner] brought me Christmas;

Jacob Marley [Dennis Marks] had me quaking, believing, and choking up;

Fred's wife [Annette Broomfield] would've sparked even without the copious jewels;

Fred [Glen Gordon] stormed into my Advent with a flurry of goodwill;

The Fezziwigs [Bob Rea, Sue Whitehead] danced their way into our hearts;

Dick Wilkins [Mike Hladish] was the fellow-apprentice everybody wanted to work alongside;

The Dickenses [Ken Boughrum, Sallie Strine] transported us;

Belle [Meg Schurmann] had us won-dering what might have been;

Fan [Alden Pridgen] and Young Scrooge [Andrew Pridgen] were the very picture of unconditional Love;

THE CRATCHIT FAMILY [Olivia Boggis, Rob Waller, Kerith Lee, Piper Justice, Ashton Wilson, Hayden Matthews] HAD ME BLOW-ING MY NOSE INTO MY SLEEVE EVERY DARNED TIME THEY DID ANYTHING AT ALL;

Scrooge [Richard Moore] was more amazing than anyone ever could've dreamed.

There are no words, except, of course...

God bless us, Every One.

Stewardship

January, and many think the

“Stewardship” giving season is over.

Au contraire, mon amis, “it is meet

and right so to do” at any time, and

unless you revert to paganism, stew-

ardship never ends until you do.

Everybody knows there is a church

Stewardship Forum (committee)

responsible for promoting Steward-

ship as a way of life, of offering up

your spirit in the giving actions of

time, treasure, and talent. However,

if we do a quick word association

and I say, “Stewardship,” probably 8

of 10 would say “money.” Cynics

would say that our mentioning time

and talent is just camouflage for the

“church tax” time.

During Christmas, most bought

many gifts. While everyone is on a

budget, the point to all of it was the

giver’s expression of love and the

joy of those receiving it. Yes, you

gave money, but so much more was

spent in time, and the talents of

managing time, matching gifts to

individuals, deciding whose house to

go to and when, and so on. If you

view Christmas as a focus on money,

rather than love, surprise, awe, and

wonder, you are like the Grinch be-

fore conversion.

I believe most of us see money as

the means of giving to the end of

creating fellowship, love, strength-

ening familial bonds, and building

community, whatever that commu-

nity. I also suspect, like the Grinch,

when you thought this, your heart

grew three sizes that day.

As Jesus said, when you see how you

actually spend your money, there

you will find your heart’s desires and

your real way of looking at the world

and your place in it. If you have the

courage of introspection, you will

learn vital truths about yourself and

your “faith.” Stewardship is not

about money, it is about the way

you live and how you invest yourself

in the world. The value and strength

of your Love, and your acceptance

of God’s love to remove feelings of

unworthiness will be shown in the

purpose of the time you give, the

money and reasons you donate, and

in the building up of your God-given

skills so you can be a greater force

for Good in this world.

Who remembers the wonderful

Stewardship-sponsored outdoor

picnic, the pizza-bingo night, the

Angels versus Saints World Series,

the J2A night, and the Halloween

carnival for Haiti? Money is always a

factor in everything we do, but

those events highlight the giving of

time and talent by so many from

various ministries. As always, some

roles were more public, with most

laboring unseen behind the scenes.

As Paul said, it takes a whole body.

Those events, while designed to

raise money, were just as much for

the edification of the faithful. Those

activities are the visible symbols of a

caring and giving faith, of devotion

to the whole community and of

many parts doing what those parts

do best in order to help the church

and the world keep pressing toward

the mark. I confess I do not give

time, money or skill to God; I give to

grown spiritually, and try to help

others in the way I understand Je-

sus’ teachings. If that is giving to

God, so much the better.

Paul said, when he was a child he

spoke like a child. It is time to put

away the childish equation of stew-

ardship and money. You are always

giving or trading away time, money

and skills.

It is always the right time to inte-

grate them into your spiritual life.

Stewardship is a way of life in every

part of your being. Stewardship is a

way of seeing and acting on that

basis. Your giving is a way of building

up the knowledge and spirit of those

in our community, and helping each

part of the body find new resolve in

courage and faith, so their Christian-

ity and their stewardship and their

life will be One, a living example of

the Way.

Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your son Jesus Christ you have over-

come sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your

service. Renew in these your servants the covenant you have made with them at their Baptism. Send them forth

in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them; through Jesus Christ your Son our

Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

RITE 13 – Collecting CHEX, not Checks!

During the months of November and December, the Rite 13 group practiced discipleship, collecting breakfast cereal for the Emmaus House Food Pantry. On December 15th they delivered the food to Emmaus House and then had a fun-filled (though I’m sure not healthy) lunch at The Varsity.
