Easter Season… I have been asked to

write about different symbols and times of

our worship together at Goddard. Jerry

and I, like many of you, have a great deal of

time on our hands thanks to Jerry’s illness

and to Covid-19. So here are our thoughts

from Eubanks Island about the Easter

Season …

Easter Season is also known as the

Great Fifty Days, or Eastertide, or Pas-

chaltide, or Paschal Time. Easter Season begins at sunset on Easter Eve and continues through the

Day of Pentecost. For Christians, this is the most joyous and celebrative season of the Christian

year as we celebrate the resurrected, living, and ascended Christ!

During Easter Season, we remember Ascension Day on the 40th day after Easter when Christ

ascended into heaven. (Acts 1:1-11). Although Ascension Day is the 6th Thursday of Easter; we

generally celebrate the Ascension in our church on the following Sunday.

During Easter Season we also focus on the giving of the Holy Spirit to the disciples on the first

Easter as told in John 20:22-23 “...Jesus breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy

Spirit”. We also celebrate the Day of Pentecost as told in the 2nd chapter of Acts. What a glorious

day that must have been! Pentecost Sunday is often referred to as the birthday of the church. As a

children’s Sunday School teacher, we often celebrated Pentecost by eating birthday cake and singing

Happy Birthday to the Church (any excuse for eating cake will do, right?)

During Easter Season, the paraments we use on the altar, the pulpit, and the Bible bookmark are

white, a color for joyous and festive seasons in the church. Did you know that the pulpit fall (Jerry

says it should be called the pulpit scarf) is also called the antependium? Don’t you just love that

word?

On Pentecost Sunday, the paraments will be changed to red, symbolically the color of fire and

the Holy Spirit. How wonderful it is that our United Methodist symbol is a cross and flame!

Easter Season is the time of new life. Our Savior's in the first place, living for ever a life which

belongs no more on earth but in heaven; and a new life for us that we shall share with Him in

heaven one day! The Easter Season is about finding and claiming our identity in the Risen Lord and

preparing for our ministries in the body of Christ. During these 50 days we are reminded in 1 Peter

3:15 to “in our hearts sanctify Christ as Lord and to give an account of the hope that is in us.” The

Easter Season allows us to think deeply and to pray broadly about what the resurrection of Jesus

means to us and to our world.

So there you have it….Jerry and I wish each of you a healthy, peaceful and joyous Easter Season!

Thank you for your continued prayers for us. Jerry is feeling much better! We can’t wait to see

each of you and to worship together in our beautiful Goddard sanctuary!
