WISDOM FROM THE SAINTS

By the death of martyrs religion has been defended, faith increased, the Church

strengthened; the dead have conquered, the persecutors have been overcome. … David rejoiced

in prophecy at the departure of his own soul, saying: ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the

death of His saints.’ He esteemed death better than life. The death itself of the martyrs is the

prize of their life.” – Saint Ambrose of Milan

IT IS TIME TO REPLENISH OUR LOCAL CHARITY FUND

gift-cards. Please see Eugene Balasenowich or Fr. David to offer a donation or ask for details. Thank you!

TODAY’S EPISTLE Ephesians 2:4-10 Brethren: God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with

which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have

been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the

ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by

grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest

anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared

beforehand that we should walk in them.

TODAY’S GOSPEL Luke 10:25-37 At that time, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Jesus, saying, “Teacher,

what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”

So he answered and said, “’You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all

your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” And He said to him, “You have

answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my

neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among

thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a

certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite,

when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he

journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his

wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of

him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him,

‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three

do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves? And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

TODAY’S GOSPEL Luke 13:10-17 At that time, Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath; and he said to the crowd, “There are six days on which men ought to work; therefore come and be healed on them, and not on the Sabbath day.” The Lord then answered him and said, “Hypocrite! Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound – think of it – for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath? And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.
