Sunday School starts September 15th
Dear Sunday School Parents,
Summer vacation is coming to a close, and we will soon be starting up our Sunday School
program. The first day of our classes will commence on Sunday September 15.
Dear parents, as in the past we are always encouraging all of our children to attend.
However, we would like you to help our Sunday School coordinators and teachers. If
your children are under the age of 6 years, it is important that you stay to assist your child
with various projects during classes. We are also praying that perhaps two or three parents
would like to help Pani Natalia and Dobr. Joanne with the teaching.
The role of the Church, the duty of the parent is to give an opportunity for our children to
receive religious instruction early, in the formative years. Then as they grow, they shall
become firm in their Orthodox faith.
Blessing of Backpacks
Fr. Taras will bless all the children for the upcoming school year and their backpacks after the Divine Liturgy on September 15
Після Служби Божої (15-го вересня)отець Тарас всіх дітей буде благословляти на новий навчальний рік. Можна приносити шкільні рюкзаки.
Psalm 16:11
You make known to me the path of life;
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
At your right hand are pleasures forever more.
A Prayer at the Harvesting of a Vineyard, & Grain Fields
O God, our Savior, Who was well-
pleased that Thine Only-begotten Son,
our Lord Jesus Christ, be called a Vine,
and Who did show Him to be the Author
of the fruit of immortality, by the grace of
Thy Spirit; Do Thou Thyself now also, O
Master, bless this fruit of the vine and the
grains of the field. Grant sanctification
and prosperity of soul unto all of us that
shall partake of it. And having fashioned us, cause us always to be communicants of
the True Vine and keep our lives unharmed, O Thou Who adorns us with Thine
eternal and undiminished gifts, by the grace and love for mankind of Thine Only-
begotten Son, with Whom Thou art blessed, together with Thy Most-holy, Good, and
Lifegiving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

When we feel abandoned and alone, God seems absent from us.
We all have those moments in our lives when we feel as though God
is absent, even perhaps nonexistent. Those times leave us feeling alone and
abandoned, as though we are lost in an empty stadium. We feel as though we are on a
boat that has been set adrift without an engine, floating further from shore, and
heading to an uncertain future.
Such occasions in our life journey are not unlike those early days,
while we were still toddlers, when mom would be holding our
hands, while dad would be reaching out to us, but feet away,
urging us to take our first step. We were not in any danger, but we
certainly didn't feel that way as we felt mom's hands separate from
ours. We felt fearful, vulnerable. We felt as though we were
going to fall, yet our dad's outstretched arms were reaching out, offering the security
that we always had, yet encouraging us to stand on our own, taking the first steps into
Independence.
God is like that with us. Those periods of time when He seems distant, even perhaps a
fictional being, are moments when He is actually closer to us than our own breath.
These are the moments God is drawing us out of ourselves, and into communion with
Him. His outstretched arms are there, even though we don't see them. These moments
strengthen us and enable us to have a mature relationship with God, not unlike the
mature relationship the child develops with his parents, after taking those first steps,
alone.
With love in Christ,

14 Orthodox New Year’s Resolutions
While New Year’s resolutions are not particularly a feature of the Orthodox faith, change certainly is, and resolving to change based on times and seasons is certainly part of our liturgical tradition. So, adapting the cultural custom of New Year’s resolutions to become a better Orthodox Christian seems perfectly fine to me. Anyway, here are some suggestions for Orthodox Christians resolving to change for the better in the New Year, things every Orthodox Christian can do.
1. Get serious about coming to church (more). What are you normally doing when those services are going on? Your priest and other parishioners are there praying, including praying for you.
2. Come to church on time. It’s kind of an in-joke that Orthodox people are always late to church. But why is that? Why can we show up on time for work, sporting events, movies, doctor’s appointments, etc., but reserve our tardiness for an encounter with the King of Kings?
3. Tithe. Nothing says you’re serious like giving 10% of your income to something. Don’t give until it hurts, but until it actually feels good.
4. Pray at home. Even if all you do is say the “Our Father” when you wake up (saying it three times a day is the most ancient known prayer rule), you will notice a change in how you think and feel about your faith.
5. Sing along at church. The choir and chanters are there to lead you in prayer, not to entertain you or pray instead of you.
6. Memorize a psalm. Memorizing Scripture is a great thing for many reasons, but psalms are especially powerful, because they are all prayers.
7. Encourage your priest. There is nothing better for a parish’s health than an encouraged priest.
8. Invite someone to church. Did you know that 82% of the unchurched say that they would come if invited? 9. Visit a monastery. You won’t believe how amazing monastic visits are until you go on one.
10. Read the Old Testament. The Old Testament is filled with all kinds of fascinating stories, prayers, songs, poetry, etc
11. Attend an adult education class. You are probably pretty smart about many things. Why don’t you use that same talent to get smart about your faith?
12. Volunteer. Do something in your parish or in your community that benefits other people without giving you any kind of material gain. And do it without expecting recognition.
13. Go to confession. If you go rarely, literally, it means that you do not think you need the gift of forgiveness that comes in the sacrament of absolution.
14. Read a spiritual book. There are few things that get us into another story, another way of looking at life, like a good book. And a good spiritual book can help to retrain your mind to become like the mind of Christ. Taken from an article by Rev. Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick, St. Paul Orthodox Church
of Emmaus, Pennsylvania. See the full article on page 7 at:
