DESCRIPTION

I have just returned from The Caravan, Camping and Motorhome show at the NEC where I have been manning our stand. What a great show and what amazing fun it was to get immersed in this fantastic industry again. A big thanks to all the fellow exhibitors, friends and contacts that helped out during the week and hello to all the park operators we met. A special big hello and thanks to Celtic Parks, It was a pleasure to speak to you. In fact exhibitions feature quite highly in this issue as we have reviewed the amusement show, EAG Int’l and VAE Expo which took place in January. Exhibitions are always a fantastic way to find out what is new and exciting and EAG and VAE delivered in spades. We also announce the launch of THE GLAMPING SHOW, which is set to take place at Stoneleigh Park in Sept. Dedicated to all those who run Glamping sites or are thinking of adding the offer to an existing park or site, this dedicated event will show all that is best in this booming sector.

In fact exhibitions feature quite highly in thisissue as we have reviewed the amusementshow, EAG Int’l and VAE Expo which tookplace in January. Exhibitions are always afantastic way to find out what is new andexciting and EAG and VAE delivered inspades.

We also announce the launch of THEGLAMPING SHOW, which is set to take placeat Stoneleigh Park in Sept. Dedicated to allthose who run Glamping sites or are thinkingof adding the offer to an existing park or site, this dedicated event will show all that is bestin this booming sector.

As minds turn to the new season we alsohave our usual round up of new products andcompanies that can add value to your parkand on a more serious note, an in depthfeature covering the implications of the newlegislation covering Food Allergy andIntolerance that came into force in Dec 2014.As usual this legislation seems to have hasslipped into place and many operators maynot be fully aware of quite what it means orwhat they have to about it. The articleexplains how it works, what is expected of allbusinesses providing unpackaged foods andwhere you can go to find help.

I’m really looking forward to the new seasonand hope to see more of you out and abut atshows and meetings. All the best Nina

For all those holiday parkoperators who includecoin-op amusements

and a ticket prize retailoffering, you will be well awareof the importance of topperforming machines in a well-run area, adding to the visitorholiday experience as well asprofit return.

RLMS Sales, a name that has becomesynonymous with the supply of gamingmachines, is stepping out with a newventure for 2015 with the launch of the F5Vortex, a brand new, coin-op ticketredemption booth that it has beenworking on throughout 2014, inconjunction with the product’s designer,Marcus Sheehan.

Phil Boulton, MD RLMS Sales, took timeout to explain why he is clearly excitedabout this year's launch.

So, tell us a little about the F5Vortex?

We've worked with Marcus and BirthdayBlaster for the past couple of years. Wesalivated at the prospect of a coin-operated Vortex and to be fair to Marcusand his team, they have come up with afantastic product with a unique way ofhandling the prize tickets. 2014 had beenthe development year for it and we havebeen trialling it since April 14 on highprofile sites and it really has proven to behit with both the paying public and siteoperators. It's ticket redemption with adifference, falling into the 'experience'category, allowing a £2 price of play inmany venues, with customers leaving thebooth feeling exhilarated and withhandfuls of redemption tickets as theirprize. With its official launch at EAG 15,first build units will be available for sitingready for the Feb half-term. It was one ofthe non-gaming stars of the show.

Who’s your target market for F5?

The F5 Vortex is a perfect fit for any venuewhich has a ticket redemption offering aspart of its portfolio of amusementmachines. Our target markets are holiday

parks, FECs and bowling alley operators;all locations where visitors and playersalmost expect an array of redemptionequipment. F5 Vortex will add to theirexisting offering yet with the confidencethat there is nothing quite like this! Is it fully tested? There were initially four machines builtwhich had been tested with high profilenational operators in a variety of venuesincluding bowling alleys and holidayparks throughout last summer and anFEC on the South coast. We weredelighted with the response from playerswhich fed through to really strongcashboxes offering a fantastic ROI, for aproduct which we’re going to market at£6,995. There is nothing else like this onthe market.

Who’s building the F5?As with all products, there’s a materialsupply chain. So Marcus and BirthdayBlaster are behind the concept andproductdesign and, given the factthat we arepart of theBell-FruitGroup, it madeabsolutesense thatBell-Fruit gotinvolved. Theywill addincrediblevalue on theengineeringand assemblyfronts. This willresult in aqualityassuredproduct, as isthe case withall productsthat leave theirNottinghamfactory, whether theyare their ownor for thirdpartymanufacturing.Details of allproducts canalso be found

on the Holiday Park Management Websitewith links to RLMS Sales and productspecific details, including, in some cases, video links.

Boulton concluded: “Whilst salescontinues to be our core commercialmodel as most operators prefer to ownthe equipment and retain the wholecashbox (less duties), we are also opento discussing Revenue share options onsome products and indeed can also offeran installation and service package fromour sister company, Gamestec, the UK’slargest service network of pay-to-playleisure machines.”

All enquiries should be made direct toRLMS Sales on 0845 603 6666.

In April 2013, Ardler Community Complex, acouncil-run facility in the northern suburbsof Dundee, hosted a National Body

Building Competition.   Specifically, it was anOpen event for competitors from all over theUK – free from the silly rules and regulationsnormally associated with Federation-run body-building events. Their event attractedapproximately 60 male and female competitors

and around 500 spectators and was considereda resounding success. A small fly in theointment, however, was the ratherembarrassing state of the showers andchanging areas at the Ardler Complex.   Withaspirations to establish the Ardler OpenChampionship as an annual event in the body-building calendar, it was strongly felt thata major refurbishment of the shower andchanging areas was a necessity.

The complex, which features two squash courts, a games hallwith spectator gallery, dance studio, cardiovascular fitness roomand a weights room, had periodically been upgraded over itsoperational lifespan, yet the shower and changing areas wereoriginal from when the Ardler Centre first opened, 38 yearsearlier in 1975. The grouped shower installation comprisedexposed pipework runs, mechanical timed flow controls andfixed shower heads.

Haven are trialling SolarPower on their caravans. They are joining forces with Willerby

homes to come up with solar powered homes. They are looking to reduce their spend by£200-£300 worth of electricity per annum

Ian Elliot- Managing Director at Horizon Leisure Homes LtdHi Adam, we looked at this last year and was going to offer it as an option onsome of our ranges. Regards Ian

Andrew Muir - Hi, We have one with 1.5kw and one with 4kw Just organisinggetting another 4kw system. We run hot tubs and our units are twins, currentelectric £700-£1000p.a

Adam BeckettEnergy Management / Energy Marketing worth having then Andrew - are thepanels fitted onto static caravans or lodges ? Ian, are you going to push thisforwards then ? How do the numbers add up for you / the park owner? surelythere's a marketing advantage here if the demand is there .. Andrew Muir Director

Adam, ey are on lodges. What's the difference between a lodge & a caravan ?

Andrew Chance - Business Development / Air conditioning Engineer at OIPLeisure Certainly an emerging market, as Ian Elliott knows our company hasbeen involved with solar panels, and Air conditioning.

Our latest project is to use Solar power, to power the Air Con units, instead of thewarm air being discharged to the atmosphere, it is dissipated in the water tank toprovide hot water. A further benefit is any excess energy can be stored in a batterybank, and used for lighting using 12 v led types.

e project is still far om accomplished, but will happen.

On which note any sites interested in working with us feel ee to get in touch. Andrew I would suggest perhaps that lodges are more expensive than staticstherefore the investment required as a percentage of capital cost is greater onstatics. Do end users have that disposable income and in a lot of instances havelimited interest in alternative power sources.

Simon Tuffrey Brought this idea 2 years ago

Andrew MuirHas anyone ever altered a hot tub so as to have a hot water tank with animmersion run om the PV

Also currently we purchase our LED GU10's at £2.50 each with 2 year warranty(32 per unit) so not cheap does anyone know of a better deal.

We are currently organising a 4KW pv system prefer sunpower panels if anyoneknows anyone who'd like the work (quoted £5200 we supply scaffold)Andrew Chance you are spot on, down to earth people buy caravans, other peoplebuy over priced caravans and call them lodges.

Ours are lodges, £150-170k they are on a chassis the same as a caravan, have atow ball and are held up with axle stands, I nearly got lynched when I oncereferred to them as caravans. Soooo funny.

Adam Beckett - Excellent contributions, thank you all. Yes the key to open this opportunity up is affordability - and theremust be a way to make it work to the greatest extent possible, wejust have to think our way around it.

I'll refer to the statics / lodges as 'accommodation' to keep thingssimple and not get too mixed up with owner demographics ( I doagree this has an impact but I want to stay focused on subject )

1. where occupants pay for their own energy / purchase or owntheir own accommodation there is an obvious case for having solarinstalled - so with owner occupied residential parks the case is clearcut IMO.

2. where occupants pay a charge to cover the cost of energy to thesite owner, it gets complicated. park owners do have a headachewhen it comes to certain occupants using far too much energy, somuch so that I have seen cases where site owners are starting to fitmeters to each unit.

perhaps it may make sense for the site owners to reward anyonethat fits solar panels by footing / sharing the upfront cost of fitting asub meter to those that fit solar to their accommodation?

So, occupants use less energy, good news for everyone ( the parkowner uses software to monitor the usage of accommodation unitswhere solar panels are fitted and bills them; software solutions existto automatically print off an invoice )

[ Feed in tariff would be due to whoever paid the cost of fitting solar- this is another aspect that would however require a software billingsolution ]

To reiterate, benefits are that an owner of accommodation fitted withsolar panels gets the benefit of lower energy bills and feed in tariffpayment where this may have not been an option before.

Park owners benefit from less energy usage as a by product ofusing sub metering and energy monitoring since occupants wouldalso be more energy usage conscious as well as drawing lessenergy from main supply.

Now this is just my initial stream of thought - something tells me thatthere is a way to make it work and that there is a substantialopportunity involved for all who want to take it in some shape orform. This is turning into a great discussion - so long as we keep focusedon the end goal I believe we can find a real solution as opposed tothe conversation thread just petering out.

The lead trade body for the UK playsector is urging political partiescampaigning for this year’s General

Election to make play a policy priority.

Provision of high-quality play facilities in local communitiesnot only has a vital role to play in tackling the nation’scatastrophic physical inactivity epidemic, but also addresseswider social problems like social exclusion, anti-socialbehaviour and community cohesion, says the Association ofPlay Industries (API).

API Chair Michael Hoenigmann says: “Every child has afundamental right to play but there are many localcommunities that have nowhere safe for their children toplay. At the same time that childhood obesity and physicalinactivity are rising and young people’s relationship with theoutdoor world is dwindling, austerity measures are puttingchildren’s right to play and their health and well-being atrisk.”

The Association calls on politicians for investment in high-quality public play facilities and parks, particularly in deprivedcommunities, for children’s needs to come first whenplanning new play facilities, for long-term funding for allschools to provide more and better opportunities for activeoutdoor learning and play and to improve provision of PEand sport, and for measurement of children’s physicalliteracy within the Ofsted inspection regime.

In full, the API makes four key asks: 1 Children are more physically active if they have access towell-designed, high-quality outdoor play facilities. Well-designed play spaces act as a ‘signpost’ for children toaccess the outdoor world. Public parks should be hubs forphysical activity for people of all ages, including youngchildren, teenagers and seniors. Investment in, andsubsequent maintenance of, public play facilities should be agovernment priority, particularly in deprived communities.2 Local authority procurement practices are protracted, consume time and money, stifle the development of high-quality play facilities and fail children. Play is a childdevelopment issue. Decisions about local play provisionshould be made by specialists within local authorities whounderstand the benefits of play and the needs of localcommunities, not by procurement departments.3 Increased physical activity levels are directly linked togreater concentration and academic attainment. Schoolsplay a key role in encouraging children to be more active

throughout the school day. The Sport England PrimarySpaces programme should be extended to every school, with broader scope to incorporate a wide variety of physicalliteracy activities, not just ball games.4 Active outdoor learning and play at school are as importantas PE and sport in encouraging children of all capabilities tobe more physically active, as well as improvingconcentration, classroom behaviour and academicperformance. A measurable outcome for physical literacy inschools with agreed minimum levels of physical activity, outdoor learning and play should be mandated in all schoolsas part of the National Curriculum with outcomes assessedwithin the Ofsted framework.

Evidence of the benefits of high-quality play provision can befound in Tim Gill’s report, The Play Return: a review of thewider benefits of play initiatives[1] and the Association ofPlay Industries’ policy document: Community benefits ofchildren’s play areas[2].

The API is the lead trade body within the UK play sector andcampaigns at the highest levels for policy recognition of thevalue of play. The association represents approximately 85per cent of UK play industry companies includingmanufacturers, installers, designers and distributors ofoutdoor and indoor play equipment and safety surfacing.

This client requested to have an embankment slideon an existing south facing slope. Due to itssouthern prospect this could be dangerous. Theheat of the sun would force it to become unusablein summer months so we built a tube slideunderground; utilising the natural form of the slope.

The area that we designed was a small part of amuch larger scheme designed by the local authorityalthough it sits adjacent to the larger site is hasindividual character and is a completely bespokesolution. The site is located on the boundary of aScheduled Ancient Monument.

When designing the site we have considered howchildren would use the space and their movementpatterns. We created a route around the areathrough the use of stepping posts and a bespokeclimbing net unit to span over the slide’s routeunderground.

The underground slide is not only a functionalsolution but it has become part of an excitingspace. The elements of play and the considerationof the surrounding protected landscape has createdan area with its own individual character, qualitiesand play experience.
