About Us Top Tips for Playon Holiday

There are many stepping stones neededto create a new play space; with everyone as important as the last.

In order to help both communities and thecommercial leisure sector negotiate thesesometimes slippery paths, the API haspublished a new document: Top Tips for Findinga Quality Play Provider. The document providesessential advice on planning spaces for playsuch as levels of usage and what age-range itshould be designed for; and business concernssuch as financial security and proof ofexperience in play.

Such advice is particularly important for holidaycentres which rely upon consistency and qualityin their play spaces all year round. In order tocater to seasonal demand, playgrounds must betough enough to withstand both the harshweathers of long winters and the busy periods ofalmost continual use by children through longsummer days.

As stated above, the first step for many buyerswill be to assess the play needs of their holidaypark. The next is to establish the practicalities ofyour plan. Is there enough space for all the playequipment you’d like to install; do you know howit should all be placed and are your costestimates realistic, including installation andmaintenance? This is where API members canprovide you with design and planning support. Many of our member companies employ skilledplay professionals who can help you createinclusive designs and find funding solutions tomeet your budget. "Olympic-phobia" issuspected asthe reason fora sharp rise inbookings at amajor holidayparks group. They're off! Londoners pick parksfor Olympic escapes

People planning to escapeLondon during the 2012 Olympicshave given a flying start to thisyear's holiday bookings at ParkHolidays UK.

The major southern-based parksgroup reports a sharp rise inJanuary bookings compared withthis time last year, and suspectsthat "Olympic-phobia" is partlyresponsible.

"Everyone's looking forward to thegames themselves, but not to theprospect of staying in the alreadycongested capital during July andAugust," said Park Holidays UKdirector Tony Clish.

"The high volume of Londonpostcodes on our bookingssuggest that many families areplanning to swap the razzmatazzof the event for more relaxingsurroundings.

"Around eight million people livein London, and just a smallpercentage of those deciding toget away during the event willprovide a big tourism boost to theregions," added Tony.

The 25-strong parks group says

that bookings are upon all its holidaycentres in southernEngland, Devon andDorset - and thatinternational visitorswill swell numberseven further.

The reason, Tonypoints out, is that Britain attractsmore than 30 millionholidaymakers from overseasevery year - very few of whom willactually hold tickets for theOlympics.

He believes that many, havingseen reports about London beingswamped with visitors during thegames, will prefer to stay outsidethe capital but within travellingdistance to it.

"Even when our holiday parks arefull to capacity, there's no senseof being amongst a crowdbecause our accommodation andfacilities are spread over manygreen acres," said Tony.

"That's why a park is a perfectescape from London, even if youare a resident in the city and justwant to catch your breath for awhile during the event," hesuggests Park Holidays UK saysit has decided not to raise itsprices during the period of the2012 London games - and iseven offering early-bookingdiscounts for the main summerweeks.

Tony also emphasises that thegroup is not promoting itself asan Olympics-free zone:

"We will be going all-out tocelebrate the event along with therest of the country, and there willbe wide-screen TVs in all ourclubs so that no-one need missthe action," he said.

"All our guests will be missing isLondon's crowds and inflatedprices - while helping to spreadthe economic benefits of theOlympics to the regions," addedTony.

The company's 2012 spring andsummer holidays, and details ofits early-bird discounts, arefeatured on Park Holidays UK'swebsite atwww.ParkHolidays.com

to roam over the 130-acre parkwhen its human guests depart.

According to park director HenryWild, they are encouraged outby Skelwith Fold's winter feedingprogramme which is based oneight dedicated feeding stations.

Nuts, corn and grain are amongthe foods regularly replenishedat the stations to sustain wildlifewhich normally hides deep in thepark's broadleaf and pinewoodlands.

Now Henry hopes that the park'smotion-activated CCTV cameraswill capture the scenes he andhis staff have often spotted ofmultiple species feedingtogether.

The cameras will be trained onselected feeding stations whichwill transmit live footage to thereception building as well asrecording the scenes both dayand night.

"It's an amazing spectacle to seea powerful stag alongside agroup of diminutive red squirrels, and scores of birds of differenttypes all in one spot," saidHenry.

"It's sometimes possible toglimpse our wildlife during therest of the year, but the feedingprogramme shows just how richand diverse our guest-list isduring the winter!" he added.

At holiday times, said Henry,Skelwith Fold regularly hasupwards of one thousandpeople on the park - but this

figure drops to just half-a-dozenemployees for three monthsevery year.

All staff are members of SkelwithFold's conservation team whichhas helped the business achievea number of prestigiousenvironmental accolades overthe years.

These include the David BellamyConservation Award at its topgold level, and a letter of praisefrom Prince Charles for the itssuccess in re-establishingcolonies of red squirrels.

Pictures from the nature watchwill be posted on Skelwith Fold'swebsite (www.skelwith.com),and Henry thinks that holidayguests will be surprised by whatthey see:

"Within days of our closing eachyear, the animals begin to re-assert their presence - and weturn from a busy holiday centreinto a bustling wildlife park," saidHenry.

"It does give us plenty of extramouths to feed, but the sight is adelight!" said Henry.

With the pressures of modern life, increasing numbers of anglers areusing their holidays as fishing time, either choosing destinations thatprovide specialist fishing lakes, orin the case of family holidays, aHoliday Park that has a lake whichDad can escape to for a few hourspeace each day.

For pretty modest sums, even smallponds can be made into anattraction that will help to attractand retain holiday park customers.

In most situations, the simplest andquickest way to start a fishery is tostock with common and mirrorcarp. These fish are relativelycheap, you don’t need a hugenumber of them and they give byfar the biggest fishing response perpound spent. They grow quicklyand can be stocked at a size whichis predator proof if birds are aproblem.

They don’t need a lot of lookingafter, the anglers throw lots of foodin which keeps them happy formost of the year and a bucket of

food once a week when theweather is mild in the winter issufficient to keep small pondsticking over. Carp will live for a longtime and anglers return the fish thatthey catch, so in most situations, stocking is a one time operationand the fish will grow and may evenbreed thus maintaining theirnumbers.

Sport and Leisure Fisheries alsosupply tench, crucian carp and F1hybrids – a type of carp thatdoesn’t grow very big, which isused in some specialist matchfisheries.

At the end of the day, our businessis about putting smiles on the facesof anglers. If we can do that for yourcustomers would that help to attractand retain customers at your site? Ifyou think so, give us a call and wewill be pleased to help put togetherthe right plan for your lakes.

Please call David Rance on01952 [email protected]

Angling still remains thebiggest participativesport in the UK, with up

to three million peopleregularly spending time bythe water each year. It is alsoone of the best opportunitiesfor parents (OK, Dad’s) tospend good quality time withtheir children in a healthyenvironment, where they canshare their enthusiasm for asport that captivates hugenumbers of people everyweekend.

ALiquid Pool Cover (LPC) is atotally flexible automaticcover that works by forming

a transparent monomolecularlayer on the surface of the waterwhenever it is not too disturbed. This layer significantly reducesevaporation, not only saving onwater heating (over 70% of loss isdue to evaporation), but far moreimportantly it can significantlyreduce the cost of air heating andhumidity control which generallyrepresents over 75% of the totalenergy consumed. As with anycover, reduced evaporationmeans that when the pool isclosed the air temperature can beset at a lower level and fresh aircut back to a minimum. Also anymechanical dehumidification willhave less work to do. Contrary toa common misconception thewater doesn’t have to becompletely still for the LPC towork. It works to a greater orlesser degree depending on poolactivity. An automatic dosingsystem ensures that the correctdose of Heatsavr is added at thesame time each day.

24 Hour CoverOne of the real performance benefits ofthe LPC is its 24 hour availability, whereas for most commercial pools aconventional cover can only be usedwhen the pool is closed which for manymay be a maximum of 8 hours at night.Admittedly when the water is particularlyactive the effect of an LPC will beminimal. BUT the pool water doesn’thave to be completely still for Heatsavrto have some effect - it works to agreater or lesser degree dependant onpool activity, so the majority of pools willstill be gaining some daytime benefitparticularly during quieter periods. Theeffect of this during opening hoursshould not be underestimated. For atypical leisure centre pool the cost ofenergy use relating to ventilation (fanpower and heat loss) can account forover 60% of the total.

Pie Chart of Energy useEven though air temperature reductionmay not be possible during the day, any

system incorporating humidity controlledvariable fresh air should result in areduction in ventilation heat loss and ifalso equipped with variable ortwo speed fans thereshould beadditionalsavings inelectricalconsumption.

Level Deck PoolsOne myth that we are keen to dispelrelates to the suitability of LPC’s for decklevel pools. LPC’s work perfectly well ondeck level pools as testified by a yearlong test carried out by a local authority. The Cusum gas analysis chart belowclearly shows an immediate effect at thepoint of introducing the LPC in Nov2008, with a continual downward trendthereafter. Indeed 80% 0f thecommercial and Local Authority poolsbenefitting from LPC’s are of deck leveldesign. More information about this isavailable on request.

SafetyThe LPC, Heatsavr, is a biodegradableliquid that is dosed into the pool at therate of around 0.8 ml/m2/day. 90% of theliquid acts as a carrier for the activeingredient and this evaporates soon afterdosing, leaving a typical concentration ofaround 50 parts per billion.

Heatsavr has been the subject ofnumerous toxicology reports, all withfavourable conclusions, the most recentof which is by KIWA, a European basedbut internationally recognised qualityauthority. http://www.1kiwa.com Safety benefits over conventional coversinclude manhandling issues, butprobably the most significant is theavoidance of regular cleaning that isnecessary with hard covers in order toprevent bacterial build which can easilyoccur in a rolled up cover.

EconomicsRequiring only a simple programmabledosing system the set up cost for LPC’sis low and whilst there is an ongoingcost of product this can be purchasedas consumed and funded by savings. Aconventional cover represents asignificant capital expense which has tobe amortized over its life, with regularmaintenance and servicing being takeninto consideration. Potential savingsfrom a LPC should be between 4 and 6times the cost of the product. LPC’s arerecommended by many Carbon TrustConsultants and are included in the listof Salix Finance approved technologies.

Widely used, Liquid pool covers are now firmly established as a real and practical alternative to conventionalpool covers and with swimming pools being one of the major energy consumers, LPC’s can go a long way
