When Kaushik Khona took over as thechief executive officer of GoAir in sum-mer of 2009, the airline had barely sixaircraft and limited operations. A fewmonths earlier, GoAir had introduced abusiness class product (the first for anIndian no-frills airline) and attractivefares to lure flyers. But customer confi-dence remained low owing to the highrate of flight cancellations. Khona, whohad been a vice president in the Wadiagroup before this appointment, steadiedthe ship, improved the aircraft utilisa-tion and expanded the airline’s networkwith a focus on mini metros and tier IIcities. When he left the airline in 2011, itwas in much better shape, having clocked61 and 7 per cent growth in revenue andnet profit, respectively, in FY’11.

Khona’s abilities will be put to testagain as he begins a second innings at theWadia group airline. The airline pressrelease on Friday described him as a turn-around specialist and a qualified resolu-tion professional. In the past 12 years,Khona turned around the operations ofDunlop Tyres and restructured a renew-able energy and shipping venture beforetaking up a consulting role in Talati &Talati LLP, the airline said.

Khona’s second innings at GoAir willbe more challenging than the first.Globally, the aviation industry is in deepdistress because of the pandemic.Domestic air traffic is down 82 per cent ona year-on-year basis and the industry-wide load factor is 50-55 per cent. GoAir’sload factor fell to 50.5 per cent in Julyfrom 57.9 per cent in June. Most otherairlines operated cargo-only flights dur-ing April-May to support revenue butGoAir failed to capitalise on the oppor-

tunity. The airline relied on a third partyfor cargo handling and was developing itsown in-house capabilities when the pan-demic struck. Against an industry-widecapacity deployment of around 30 percent of pre-Covid period, GoAir is oper-ating only at 10-12 per cent capacity. Theairline operates around 40 flights dailyincluding charters.

Khona’s challenge would be to shoreup the airline’s finances. Cash and bankbalance had halved to ~72.5 crore sequen-tially in the June-end quarter and itscredit rating downgraded in July, giventhe weak liquidity outlook. He will alsohave to negotiate with Airbus regardingscheduled aircraft deliveries given thechanged business outlook. Last October, the airline had indicated it would inductone aircraft a month. It has a fleet of 55aircraft at present.

Motivating the workforce will also beessential since the airline has put around70 per cent of its staff on leave without

pay since March. Several senior execu-tives, too, have quit in recent weeks.“Other airlines have cut salaries and jobsbut have managed public perception bet-ter,” said an industry expert.

“GoAir has taken a spreadsheet-driv-en hard-line approach to save cash. Withno bailout or support coming from thegovernment, the promoters probablybelieve that is the only way to save theairline,” the industry expert pointed out. This also explains why the airline is oper-ating fewer flights than others. Insiderssay it is not prudent to add flights if the air-line is unable to make money from them. The June-September period is also tradi-tionally a weak quarter for domestic avi-ation and executives are hoping for ademand recovery from next month.

Some believe that cash conservationalone will not help and the airline willhave to focus on operational efficiencies.During his earlier tenure, GoAir’s averagefleet utilisation had increased to over 14hours a day, among the highest in theindustry, and this helped it achieveeconomies of scale.

“Kaushik taking over GoAir is possiblythe most agile and aggressive step theWadias could have taken; more so sinceKaushik, unlike anyone else before in theCEO role, knows the management andfunctioning DNA of the Wadia groupextremely well,” said Mark D Martin, founder & CEO of Martin Consulting LLC,an aviation consulting and safety firm.

His approach with GoAir centres onhis powerful understanding of airlinefinancials, P&L and revenue and returns, and this has worked extremely well forGoAir in the past, he added.

Others believe a mere change in guardwill not help GoAir ride the storm.“Kaushik’s first tenure as GoAir’s CEOwas good and we wish him good luck forthe second tenure. His induction thistime is under severe and challenging cir-cumstances — most of which are beyondhis control, especially recapitalisation,”said Kapil Kaul, South Asia CEO of avia-tion consultancy CAPA, in a statement.

The Indian Premier League’s (IPL)2020 edition is the most highly antic-ipated cricketing event compared tothe previous seasons due to the disruptioncaused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Big com-panies such as Tata Sons and Reliance Jioare eyeing the title sponsorship of IPL,which would be held in the United ArabEmirates, to replace Chinese mobile phonecompany Vivo this season. Interestingly, education technology start-ups Unacad-emy and Byju’s, which compete with eachother, have also reportedly joined the fray. This reflects the new levels of ambitions byIndian edtech companies as much of thecountry’s $180-billion education sector goesonline to adapt to the new reality.

The pandemic has been a watershedmoment for India’s edtech sector. SinceMarch, Unacademy has doubled the num-ber of active subscribers. The monthlywatch time has reached an all-time high ofover 1 billion minutes.

Unacademy has opened up the platformto schools and colleges to conduct liveclasses without any interruptions. TheBengaluru-based start-up was founded byGaurav Munjal, Roman Saini, and HemeshSingh in 2015, initially on YouTube in 2010.It now has a network of more than 18,000educators and 30 million learners. It expectsto earn an annual recurring revenue (ARR)of about $300 million in the coming years.

According to industry insiders, big techcompanies including Facebook, Googleand Microsoft are eyeing investments inthese start-ups.

Social media giant Facebook hasalready placed its bet on Unacademy. Itparticipated in a $110-million investmentround in February. The round, which wasled by General Atlantic, also drew fundingfrom Sequoia India, Nexus VenturePartners, Steadview Capital and BlumeVentures. Flipkart’s CEO Kalyan Krishna-murthy and Udaan co-founder SujeetKumar also participated in the round, which according to sources, gave the com-pany a post-money valuation of $510 mil-lion. Unacademy is now in talks withJapan’s SoftBank and other investors toraise $200 million, valuing the company at$1.2 billion.

“This (online education) is an expan-sive space and not a winner-takes-all cate-gory,” said Ankur Pahwa, partner andnational leader, e-commerce and consumerinternet at EY India. “There are many start-ups focusing on various challenges that the

segment faces, from provid-ing content in local languages, upskilling teachers and edu-cation in new technologies.”

Pahwa said edtech com-panies have raised almost $1billion in funding this year.“Investors are also excitedthat what’s being built inIndia could be potentiallyapplicable across the world,”said Pahwa.

Indeed, Byju’s strategy toexpand in global marketswas reinforced when itacquired this monthMumbai based edtech start-up, WhiteHat Jr, whichteaches coding to children, for a $300 million all-cashdeal. WhiteHat Jr plans toexpand to Canada, UK,Australia and New Zealand(ANZ) after strong growth inthe US. Since February thisyear, WhiteHat Jr has beengrowing at more than 100 percent month-over-month.Last year Byju’s acquiredOsmo, a US-based maker ofeducational games, for $120million to propel its global ambitions.

The pandemic has helped Byju’sbecome a decacorn and cross $10.5 billionin valuation after raising new funding fromSilicon Valley investor Mary Meeker’s BondCapital. Byju’s has now joined the league of24 decacorns such as TikTok-ownerBytedance and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Since the lockdown, Byju’s has seenover 15 million new students joining itsplatform. Last month, the companylaunched Byju’s classes, a comprehensiveonline tutoring programme for person-alised after-school learning solutions fromIndia’s top teachers. Byju’s learning apphas over 64 million registered students and4.2 million annual paid subscriptions.Byju’s said it is now inching towards the $1-billion revenue milestone.

Pahwa of EY said there is a ground-swell of support for online educationfuelled by penetration into “Bharat” (small

towns and rural India).“Edtech companies are moreagile and can adapt to thefast-changing environment,”he pointed out.

One such fast-growingcompany is Vedantu, whichprovides live tutoring withsome of the best-curatedteachers. In July, it raised$100 million from US-basedinvestment firm Coatue withparticipation from existinginvestors. With this round, the Bengaluru-based firm’svaluation jumped to $600million, making it the secondmost-valued company inIndian edtech.

Vedantu grew 220 percent during the lockdown, with more than two millionstudents attending live class-es. With this definitive shiftin consumer behaviour,Vedantu is investing to scaleimpact and get into new cat-egories. Over one million stu-dents study live every monthon the Vedantu platform. Also, more than 25 million

users every month from over 1,000 citiesand 40 countries access free content, testsand videos on Vedantu’s platform and itsYouTube channels.

Coursera, the Mountain View,California-based online learning company,is also witnessing a huge demand in thecountry. Since March, it has added over 3.6million learners in India compared to 1.4 million in all of 2019.

As of the end of July, there were ninemillion registered learners from India onCoursera. It has attracted over 50 enter-prise customers including TataCommunications and Airtel. This month,Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)Roorkee partnered with Coursera to launchtwo new certificate programmes — in arti-ficial intelligence and machine learning, and in data science — as part of the insti-tute’s commitment to making its pro-grammes accessible to learners globally.

Salaried jobs have taken thebiggest sustained hit in the cur-rent Covid-19-induced lockdown.Salaried jobs are preferred forms

of employment for most people. These jobs offer better terms ofemployment and also better wages.Households with salaried jobs are bet-ter placed to build savings and plan asustained improvement in their stan-dard of living. Such households arealso better placed to borrow and serv-ice their borrowing because of thesteady nature of their earnings.

While informal jobs have returned, and even increased after being hit bythe lockdown, formal jobs have not.Non-salaried forms of employmenthave increased from 317.6 million in2019-20 to 325.6 million in July 2020.This implies a growth of nearly 8 mil-lion jobs or an increase of 2.5 per centin informal employment. However, salaried jobs have declined by 18.9 mil-lion by the same comparison. Or,declined by a whopping 22 per centduring the lockdown.

Urban India has more salaried jobsthan rural India. Of the 86 millionsalaried jobs in India in 2019-20, 58 percent were in urban India and 42 percent in rural India. Job losses are also in

similar proportions.Salaried jobs in urban India are

likely to be the better paying jobs;they offer better terms of engagementand also are jobs that yield higher pro-ductivity compared to salaried jobsin rural India. Loss of these urbansalaried jobs is, therefore, likely tohave a particularly debilitatingimpact on the economy, besides caus-ing immediate hardship to middle-class households.

Financial statements of listed com-panies for the quarter ended June

2020 provide a few insights intosalaried jobs. Listed companies pro-vide among the better salaried jobs.

Financial statements for the quar-ter ended June 2020 of 1,560 compa-nies were available inCMIE’s Prowess databaseas of the last weekend. Thisis about a third of all com-panies that usually providesuch data every quarter.Usually, such databecomes available for allcompanies within 45 daysof the end of the quarter, which would have been byAugust 15 for the June2020 quarter. But, because of theCovid-19 crisis, companies have beenallowed time till September 15 to pub-lish their financial statements.

The wage bill of these 1,560 listedcompanies recorded a 2.9 per cent yoyincrease in the June 2020 quarter. Thisis the lowest growth in the past 18 years.

What is revealing in this data is thestark differences between industries.A caveat before we discuss these is thatthese are still preliminary results and abetter picture will emerge only after amonth. Nevertheless, these resultsindicate a pattern that is worth noting

even with these preliminary data.Banks saw a 16.6 per cent increase

in their wage bill and securitiesbroking companies saw a 13.5 per centincrease in theirs but manufacturingcompanies saw a 7 per cent fall in theirwage bill. The services sector was amixed bag.

Within manufacturing, textiles hasseen the biggest hit. Its wage bill fell by29 per cent. Textiles is a labour-inten-sive industry and this sharp fall in thewage bill implies a very sharp fall inemployment in the industry. The sameholds true for leather, another labour-intensive industry. This recorded a 22.5per cent fall in its wage bill in the June2020 quarter. Automobile ancillariesreported a 21 per cent decline in its

wage bill and the auto-mobiles’ wage bill wasdown by 18.6 per cent. These, again, arelabour intensive.

In the services sec-tors, the wage bill of thetourism industry wasdown 30 per cent, hotelsand restaurants downby 20.5 per cent, roadtransport down by 27.6

per cent, education by 28 per cent. Wagebill of the real estate sector was down by21 per cent. The wage bill of the telecomsector increased by 10.7 per cent.

These are large inter-industry vari-ations. Although the net result showsup as a marginal increase in the wagebill, implying a very small loss of jobs, the data indicate big job losses in manyindustries in the first quarter of 2020-21. CPHS estimates show a loss of 17million salaried jobs in the quarter. Wealso know that this got worse in July.
