    July 2012FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friendsof the Hill United Presbyterian Church:

As we move into the month of July, the Fourthof July is a celebration of that seminal day whenthe thirteen colonies of Great Britain declaredtheir independence and moved toward becominga Constitutional Republic with an attempt at agovernment of the people, by the people and forthe people.

    The Declaration of Independence spoke of theinalienable rights of life, liberty, and thepursuit of happiness. The Jewish and Christianfaith both speak of freedom and independence;

yet ultimately, not through a legal constitution, but through a lively covenant relationship withthe Living God Who reveals Himself to people.

God came to deliver the Israelite people fromslavery into being a free people in Canaan. Later,God came in Jesus the Messiah to deliver peoplefrom a hard-edged legalism to a Covenant ofgrace through a faith, hope and love relationship

with God through Christ Jesus, led by the HolySpirit.

As St. Paul wrote one time in Galatians 5: 1, Forfreedom Christ has set us free; stand fasttherefore, and do not submit again to a yoke ofslavery!

We are grateful to God for the freedom we liveby in this country. We also understand that thebasis for our freedoms are found in Gods

deliverance through the Exodus and Godssalvation in Jesus Christ. Freedom forever hasa spiritual basis anchored in a Covenantrelationship with the God Who has created usand leads us in our lives!

Grace to you and Peace through God theFather and the Lord Jesus Christ,

    Pastor ClarkRev. Clark Sawyer

    GHANA MISSION PARTNERSHIP

McWilson Atakro had been inquiring about our centennial celebrationduring this past year, just one of many inquiries he has made aboutactivities at the Hill Church. In response, Nancy Slezak mailed him thepacket of flashbacks and the program from our dinner. McWilson, also

currently the President of Peki Seminary, about 50 miles outside ofAccra, Ghana, encourages us to continue the scholarship program for the

students at Bubiashie. He said that education is hard to come by in Ghana, is greatly valued, andthat he pays out 50% of his salary to educate his sons.

In early June, we received an email from one of our scholarship awardees, Benedicta Akbokey.concerning the scholarship awarded last September. She was also inquiring about the possibilityof a Ghanaian student attending college in America. Keep Benedicta in your prayers for her veryspecial dream.

When you look in the overflow area you can notice there are still a number of cards hanging onour Tree of Knowledge, the publicity piece we are using to recognize the need to raise money forthe Ghanaian scholarship funds to be sent in August. We appreciate those who have agreed tohelp by praying for a student and making an extra effort to contribute funds. The task forceputs out a special challenge to any of you who are or were in education, whether as a teacher, administrator, mentor, coach, Sunday school teacher, or someone who has a passion for theeducation of youth. Becky Ackerman, a former member, now living in South Carolina and whowas visiting with us in May saw our tree and was motivated to make a contribution to assistthese young women. We prayerfully request that others will consider this effort to make a realdifference in the lives of young women who are motivated to be educated. Many folks as well as

the Task Force and the Session are working to see that the scholarship effort raises the fundsneeded in this next school year. Please join the persons or groups who have contributed to date.

Our Task Force continues to request your continuing prayers for our Christian friends in theBubiashie District churches.

Jim IhlenfeldThe Ghana Mission Task Force
