St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Community Presbyterian Worship
March 2013 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and
Friends of The Hill United Presbyterian Church:
Where would we be without Easter, the “Great-
Getting-Up Day of Jesus Christ?”
Quite directly, we would be bereft spiritually
and eternally without hope in this world and the
next.
Paul, in I Corinthians 15 spoke to this question:
He wrote, “If Christ has not been raised, then
our preaching is in vain and your faith is in
vain...If Christ has not been raised, your faith is
futile and you are still in your sins… If for this
life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all
people most to be pitied.
But in fact Christ has been raised from the
dead, the first fruits of those who have died…
For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all
be made alive. But each in his own order: Christ
the first fruits, then at His coming, those who
belong to Christ.”
I look forward to celebrating this Lenton
season, Holy Week and the Great Day of Easter
with you.
Believe the Easter cry: “Christ is Risen...He is
Risen Indeed!”
In the Grace of Jesus Christ
Pastor Clark
Rev. Clark Sawyer

The writer to the Hebrews one
time wrote, “Do not neglect the
habit of meeting together (for
Worship) for in so doing, we stir
one another up to love and good
works!” I believe that God loves
to see us “stirred up” as we gather together for
worship, fellowship, study, service and outreach.
See you at worship!

BIBLE READING FOR MARCH
ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING
Lenten Season Offering
More than sixty years ago, in
response to the devastation of World
War II, a Saturday evening
nat ionw ide broadcast asked
Americans to give generously the
next morning in their churches. A remarkable
variety of national leaders and celebrities gave
their efforts to the broadcast. More than
seventy-five thousand churches responded. So
was born “The One Great Hour of Sharing.”
Today, our Presbyterian Church USA uses its
offering gifts roughly divided into thirds. Each of
these three programs—Self-development of
People, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the
Presbyterian Hunger program—each receives 32%
of the offering; the remaining 4% goes to the
Presbyterian Hunger Program for its work on
homelessness and affordable housing.
The Presbyterian Church USA offering has
received eight to eleven million dollars a year for
at least the past twenty years. Our goal at Hill
Church this year is $2,100.00.
Please pray about whether God wants you to give
to this offering. If you are led to give, please
give generously.
Envelopes will be in the bulletins at our worship
services throughout Lent and into the celebration
of Holy Week and Easter.
Blessings to you!
EASTER FLOWERS
Don’t forget to order your flowers for
Easter this year. The deadline for
orders is March 17. Lilies, tulips, and
hyacinths are available. Order
forms are on the Deacon’s table in
the sanctuary. The price this
year is $7.00.

BREAKING THE SILENCE
And Taking the Road Less Traveled
(An Amended and Amplified
Announcement)
March 3—17, 2013
Led by Rev. Mike Winship
The Adult Sunday School Classes
on March 3, 10, and 17 will be led
by Rev. Mike Winship who will
share his own personal journey of
changes of mind, his reasons for alliance and
advocacy for gay people.
Mar.3rd class may be called For the Bible Tells Me So, and Mike will shed new light on some
old misunderstood and mis-used Bible
passages.
Mar.10th class may be called When Did We Choose to be Gay or Straight? Facts about
being gay and the severely emotional burden
of hiding who one is with its imposed shame
and rejection. Am I God’s child? Am I too
created in the image of God? Am I not to
love?
Mar.17th class may be called Are We on the Road Less Traveled? Where is the faithful
Church in all this? Are we called on to forgive
or to repent? How can we realize the
prophecy of Isaiah 58: 6-12? If some of what
we were taught over the years, some of the
literal and traditional interpretations of Holy
Writ, conflicts with the love and example of
Jesus, which way do I go??
Maybe, just maybe, in these classes some of
us may change our minds, too. Check out
Romans 12:2.
The class meets in the Hall Lounge from 9:15-
10:15 A.M.

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT
As we move into the new year, we remind you that our scholarship
fund needs replenished in order to send funds by early September.
This past September, over $6200 was transferred to the Bubiashie
District scholarship committee, resulting in assistance for 31 young
women to attend high school, college, or a technical school. Thanks
to each and every one of last year’s contributors. Further, we invite
all others to join us in this endeavor in 2013. Remember, setting
aside one dollar each day for this fund can add up in a short time.
The following is an excerpt of a letter from one of our students, Abigail Kpelly to Jim Ihlenfeld. It
was written on December 28th and received on January 22nd. Her father has a tailor shop just about
two blocks from the Bubiashie church and the family resides nearby. Mr. Kpelly’s (John) work is
absolutely superb. He makes men’s shirts, pants, suits, a variety of women’s clothes and whatever
else a tailor can make. Abigail writes:
Dear Sir, Thank you so much for taking the initiative to break the ice by writing me first and I have not been able to reply to you. I hope you and your family are getting on well by the Grace. I am also fine by the Grace and I hope you and your family are also sound in mind and limb. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the church for helping my colleagues and I financially. We really appreciate it and pray that God blesses all of you in abundance. With your effort we have been able to complete secondary school successfully and came out with wonderful results. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I pray that God grant all your wishes as we are about to begin a new year. Goodbye for now. May God bless you. Abigail
We also received the following information from another one of our scholarship awardees:
Ivy Darke is 28 and attends the Ho Community Health Nursing School which is located in the city of
Ho in the Volta Region. Ho is located about 100 miles north of Accra in a very beautiful section of
Ghana. Ivy is pursuing a certificate in community health nursing. Her favorite classes are basic
nursing and personal hygiene. Her goal is to acquire skills to alleviate patients from their pain.
Her mother is a caterer while her father is a technical engineer. The family of six lives in Accra-
North Kaneshie District. They attend the Bubiashie EP Church.
Ivy enjoys singing at church, as well as reading motivational and Christian books, listening to music,
and playing with kids.
Ivy’s school address is: Ho Community Health Nursing School p. o. box PMB Ho Volta Region
Ghana, West Africa. Her e-mail is: [email protected]
Please keep the Bubiashie District churches, the Bubiashie scholarship committee, as well as the
students in your prayers.
