A YOUNG Heswall actress is the star of

a lm which has won an international lm

    award.

The one act play Prelude to Macbeth

by Neston writer James Chalmers has

received the Seahorse Award for the

best stage play by a male writer at the

    Moondance International Film Festival inAmerica.

The play, a prequel to Shakespeares

Macbeth, tells the story of how the lowly

    whore Lorna Stewart becomes Lady

    Macbeth through cunning and betrayal,

urged on by the predictions of the three

    witches.

The play is written in blank verse, the

style popular in Elizabethan England, so

that it has the same feel and rhythm of

    the Shakespeare play.

Rosalie Friday plays the part of Lorna

Stewart in the lm which was previouslystaged as a play.

The group is now busy working on a

full length lm version at various Wirral

    locations, including Birkenhead Priory

and Shotwick Church with the cast from

    the stage production

    plus extras from local

    Viking re-enactment

    group Wirhalh Skip

    Felag. The lm project,

    which is being directed

    by Sue Bence, will be

    completed by the end of

    the year with a premiere

    in Neston in January. In

    the meantime, James

    is hoping his success

    in the American

    competition will be the

    rst step to getting the

    play published.

GARdeNING IN OCTObeRGARdeNING by JANeT HeATH

OCTOBER is a good month to move existing plants or plant out new plants

as the soil will still be warm from summer and moist which will enableplants to settle in before winter.

Flowering perennials such as Phlox, perennial

    Geraniums, Yellow Loosestrife Lysimachia punctata

or its relative the Chinese Loosestrife Lysimachia

clethroides, with wonderful white wavy cone shaped

owers, all spread and can be dug up, split and

replanted. Phlox in particular, can become congested

and tend not to ower well after a few years. Splitting

them and replanting in enriched soil will rejuvenate

    them.

Shrubs can be moved now so if you have a shrub that

is in the wrong place, give it a can of water an hour or

so before moving, dig it up, being careful to dig up all

its root ball. When replanting, dig a hole larger than the

root ball, ensure that the soil is loosened all around the

planting hole so that the roots will be able to grow out

into the surrounding soil. Mix some well rotted manure

or planting compost in the soil and if the soil is dry, add

a watering can of water to the base of the hole. Backll

with soil, rming in with your ngers (not your boot!),and add another can of water.

Roses that are tall can be cut back before winter

although the main pruning is usually in March. This will

prevent the plant from being rocked in high winds. If

the leaves are diseased from blackspot and falling from

the rose, remove them as the spores can remain in the

    ground to re-infect next season.

Plant bulbs in October, such as the tiny Iris reticulata,

daffodil and tulip bulbs, for owering next year. Also tryhyacinths in pots outside as they will survive outdoors.

In my garden a previous owner planted them out in

the borders where they come up each year. I pick the

blooms to bring into the house for their scent. All the

above do well in pots with winter owering pansies to

give colour in winter and spring.

Cut out the fruited canes of raspberries and harvest the

last apples from trees. Laying turf in October is ideal

as the soil below should remain moist to encourage

rooting and you will be less likely to walk on the lawnand damage the turf in autumn.

Chasing the Devil: The Search for Africas Fighting Spirit

by Tim ButcherFor those who enjoyed Blood River, the account of Tim Butchers

astonishing journey re-tracing the steps of Henry Stanley in the

Congo, here is a new adventure from the same author, this time

set in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Once again, Tim set out to follow

in the footsteps of an earlier explorer and for this epic journey

chose Graham Greene as his inspiration.

In 1935 at the age of 30 Greene deliberately risked his life on atrip by rail, truck and then foot in these 2 countries, taking with

him 26 bearers, a case of scotch, vast supplies of European

food, and hammocks in which he and his travelling companion, a

female cousin, were sometimes carried. Fever almost killed Greene on this adventure

of life-changing importance which was later immortalised in his controversial travel

    classic, Journey Without Maps.

By contrast Tim travelled very light, accompanied by the son of a friend, and living

off food bought in remote villages as he went along. In the course of his journey

he explores how in recent years rebel groups have thrived in the

West African bush for so long and asks whether the devils of war

have truly been chased away. On his journey he encounters otherdevils, masked gures guarding the secrets of jungle communities.

Some are no more frightening than local schoolmasters but others

are much more sinister, relying on ritual cannibalism as a source of

    their magical power.

Tim spent 19 years on the staff of the Daily Telegraph serving

as chief war correspondent, Africa Bureau chief and Middle

East correspondent. Blood River was picked for the Richard and

Judy Book Club, translated into six languages and shortlisted for

numerous awards including the Samuel Johnson prize for travel writing. Chasing the

Devil is an equally dramatic travel book touching on one of the most fraught parts

of the globe at a unique moment in history. Weaving history and anthropology withpersonal narrative (as well as new discoveries about Greene) it is as exciting as it is

enlightening. I was so caught up with the account that I was driven to seek out and

read a copy of Journey Without Maps in order to compare the two. His own personal

reections about Africa will be of special interest to anyone who has travelled and

    worked there.

Tim Butcher himself will be at Linghams Bookshop, Heswall on Mon Oct 25th

at 6 p.m. talking about his book with audio-visual illustration and answering

questions. This promises to be a truly fascinating evening and there will also

be an opportunity too get your copy signed. Tickets (5 including wine and

canaps) available from the shop at 342 7290. Further info at Linghams new
