heirloom-tomato pincushionsThese sewing-box staples are justas
sweet as garden-growntomatoes, and you dont have towait until
summer to enjoy them.For pincushions with symmetrical
shapes, begin at step 1; start atstep 3 for cushions with the
uneven
contours common in heirloomvarieties.
materials basic sewing supplies;cotton or any other
medium-weightfabric (such as corduroy or velvet);cotton or
polyester fill; largeembroidery needle; perle cotton;scraps of
green felt (for caps);
fabric glue
how-to 1. Cut a rectangle of fabricon the bias thats twice as
long as it
is wide (the yellow tomato31/8-inch
[8cm] diameter when finishedrequired a 10-by-5-inch [25.5cm
x12.5cm] piece). With the fabricfacing right-side up, fold it in
half asshown, and join the ends with a 1/4-inch (6mm) seam
allowance. Sew arunning stitch around the top edge;
tightly pull the thread to cinch thefabric, and secure with a
fewbackstitches.
2. Turn the pouch right-side out.
Stuff with fill (cotton is firmer thanpolyester). Sew a running
stitcharound the open end; pull the
thread to cinch the fabric. Tack itshut with a few stitches, and
knot.To flatten, double-thread theembroidery needle with the
perle
cotton, and pull it through the corea few times. Mimic a tomatos
fluteddetails by wrapping the threadaround the cushion and
backthrough the core several times. Knotthe thread at the top to
finish.
3. For an heirloom-style tomato, cuta circle of fabric (the red
one
31/2-inch [9cm] diameter whenfinishedrequired a 10-inch[25.5cm]
diameter circle). With thefabric wrong-side up, hand-sew arunning
stitch around the perimeter.
Place batting in the center of thefabric and gather the fabric
into apouch around it. Stuff with morebatting, then pull the thread
tocinch; tack with fluted stitches and
knot. Flatten the cushion and apply
details, as described in step 2.
4. For the cap, draw a 6-pointedstar (see photo 4) onto green
feltwith a disappearing-ink fabric pen,
and cut it out. Using a needlethreaded with a single length
ofperle cotton, sew and knot a looponto the cap. Glue the cap to
thetop of the pincushion.
