avoid the Flu

this Winter

Winter, when people typically spend more time indoors than outdoors, is often dominated by the sniffling and sneezing synonymous with the flu. But men and women can take steps to protect themselves from the flu this season.

Get a flu shot. Some people prefer to avoid getting a flu shot because they want to build up their natural immunities or they believe the shots can make them sick. Most flu shots contain an inactive virus that will not make you sick, and will only trigger your body’s immune system response to a foreign invader. It can take a couple of weeks for full immunity to develop, so it’s possible to still get sick even after a flu shot has been administered. Also, a flu shot does not guarantee recipients won’t get the flu. People can still get the flu after receiving a flu shot, as it may be another strain of the virus. But flu shots are largely effective.

Quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes and cigars can affect the immune system and also compromise the body in a number of different ways. Smoking can disable mechanisms in your breathing passageways that serve as natural repellants to the flu. These include the hairs on the lungs that brush away contaminants. Smoking also can create holes in the lining of lower air passages, and such holes can make people more susceptible to illness, including the flu.

Get plenty of rest and good food. Adequate sleep and a healthy diet can bolster your immune system. It’s important to stay hydrated, eat fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C and prioritize getting a good night’s sleep each night.

avoid sick people. When those around you are sick, it is best to keep your distance, especially when those people have the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that people with the flu can spread it to others up to six feet away. Flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets of bodily fluids expelled during coughing, sneezing and even talking. This is why doctors recommend that anyone who has the flu stay home from work or school until they are fully recovered.

Be especially cautious when pregnant. According to Dr. Cameron Wolfe, an infectious disease specialist at Duke University Medical Center, women who are pregnant are at a higher risk of complications and even death from influenza. Doctors don’t fully understand why, but many feel that because the flu can compromise a woman’s ability to breathe well, this makes it difficult for oxygen to be passed on to the fetus. Pregnant women should speak with their obstetricians about the safety of the flu shot.

Beware of homeopathic remedies. Always check with a doctor before adding any natural remedies to your flu-fighting repertoire. While some supplements like elderberry syrup, zinc and oscillococcinum can mitigate symptoms of the flu, there’s no solid evidence that these items offer any preventative value. Homeopathic remedies also can interfere with medications or may be dangerous to a developing fetus, so do not take these substances without first checking with a doctor.

Delnor Glen Senior Living has been recognized as one of the world’s most resident-centered communities by Planetree, Inc. Following a rigorous review of Delnor Glen’s culture, including programs, policies, practices and the environment of care, the community has been officially designated a “Planetree Resident-Centered Community,” distinguishing it as among those organizations worldwide doing the most advanced work in patient/resident-centered care. It is the first and only long term care community in the United States, and one of only 46 healthcare organizations worldwide to have received the Planetree Designation since the program’s launch in 2007.

Planetree Designation is the only award that recognizes excellence in person-centeredness across the continuum of care, essentially signaling to healthcare consumers that Delnor Glen Senior Living is a community where providers partner with residents and families, and where resident comfort, dignity, empowerment and well-being are prioritized with providing top-quality clinical care.

Planetree — an international not-for-profit organization— has been at the forefront of this movement to transform healthcare from the perspective of the patient/resident for 35 years, taking the lead in defining what is meant by “patient-/resident-centered care.” As such, the organization is uniquely qualified to offer this formal recognition distinguishing healthcare organizations committed to providing resident-centered and holistic care.

The program is coordinated by Planetree; however all designation determinations are made by an independent designation committee whose membership includes national health care experts with experience with the American Hospital Association, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, the American Health Care Association and The Joint Commission. Committee members also include CEOs from previously designated organizations.

The criteria that Delnor Glen had to satisfy to achieve designation reflect what residents, family members and healthcare professionals in hundreds of focus groups held around the world say matters most to them during a healthcare experience This qualitative data aligns with the growing evidence-base for patient-/resident-centered care, and establishes the Planetree Designation as a concrete framework for defining and measuring excellence in resident-centeredness.

More than 60 specific criteria address components of a resident-centered healthcare experience, including resident-provider interactions, access to

information, family involvement, the physical environment, food and nutrition, spirituality, arts and entertainment, and integrative therapies. In addition, the criteria focus on how the community is supporting its staff, opportunities for staff, residents and families to have a voice in the way care is delivered, and the ways that the organization is reaching beyond its walls to care for its community.

As part of the designation process, Planetree representatives visited Delnor Glen in July to speak directly with residents, family members, organization leadership, staff, providers, and members of the Planetree Steering Team. A series of focus groups were held in which participants candidly shared their experiences at Delnor Glen. Consistent with the Planetree Designation criteria, the site visit team found that residents feel listened to, respected, and well-cared for, and that staff feels informed, empowered, and appropriately recognized.

“Planetree is very pleased to award Delnor Glen Senior Living with this designation,” said Susan Frampton, Ph.D., Planetree’s President. “This achievement is a true testament to the staff and leadership at this special organization, each of whom has played a crucial role in integrating the philosophy of resident-centered care into their day-to-day work. The team at Delnor Glen is not only making a difference for individual residents and family members, but is also effectively transforming the culture of your organization, and fundamentally altering what this community expects when they come to a long term care community.”

Delnor Glen distinguished as a resident-centered community

I am often asked ‘why should I buy a hearing aid from Geneva Hearing Services’. There are severalissues to consider but the main two points to be aware of are 1) Geneva Hearingonly employs licensed Audiologists (NOT hearing aid dispensers) and 2) We arenot contracted or owned by any one manufacture.

Audiologists complete,at minimum, a master’s level degree in audiology and a supervised clinicalfellowship program prior to obtaining state licensure and nationalcertification.

Since 2007, the minimum standard of education for audiologistsentering the profession is a clinical doctorate (Au.D.), reflecting the needfor increased training and experience as the audiology scope of practice hasgrown and technology has advanced.

The second issue toconsider is where to go. Manufactured tied offices (like AccuQuest, Beltone,Hearing Labs and Miracle Ear) typically only sell one brand or manufacture ofhearing aids. The options available to the patient are limited in that respect. In addition, these

facilities do not always employ audiologist and may have adispenser or Audioprosthologist working there. Geneva Hearing Services is anindependent, private practice that is not contract with any one manufacture andtherefore we are able to offer an individualized treatment plan to each patientthat walks in our door. We are able to get the best aid for each unique patientneed.

Coping with traumatic stressThis is the time of year when many of us examine our patterns of thinking, behaving, and relating to others. We often promise ourselves this will be the year we pursue our happiness, a sense of peace, or self-confidence. For some, the struggle began with a recent traumatic event, for others the event long ago is still present in our minds and impacting our wellbeing. Yet for others, chronic accumulation of stressful events has worn us down so we no longer recognize ourselves as the person we want to be. Disorders related to traumatic stress are common and can occur at any age.

Children have fewer resources for coping with traumatic stress. Often, unable to verbalize or comprehend events and their impact, children are left to blame themselves, act-out their stress through play or aggression, or experience problems achieving normal developmental milestones. Other children learn to mask their fears or anxiety through over-achievement or by developing physical symptoms. Without assistance, traumatized children may become troubled adolescents.

Adolescents strive to develop a positive identity and relationship to peers. Adolescents who feel alienated or misunderstood due to traumatic events struggle to move through this critical stage of development. They may be labeled as depressed or rebellious.

At StillWaters, our clinicians have over seventy years of combined experience in providing recovery from traumatic stress throughout the lifespan. Our experts have specialized skills in areas such as play and art therapy, addictions, forensic sensitivity for victims of violence, complicated grief, traumatic injury or illness, bullying, sexual assault, foster/adoptive care, and adult survivors of childhood trauma. Recognized as experts by child protection services, the courts, and schools, StillWaters provides a team approach to recovery for children, adolescents, adults, and families throughout Kane and surrounding counties. Though the benefits of a good night's sleep are widely known, 65 percent of respondents in a recent NSF survey admitted they have problems sleeping a few nights each week. That's a significant cause for concern, as sleep deprivation has been linked to a host of health problems, including obesity and high blood pressure. Inadequate sleep has also been linked to decreased productivity, meaning professionals who are not prioritizing a good night's sleep could ultimately see their careers suffer as a result.Though some people have preexisting medical conditions that affect the quality of their sleep, many more individuals who struggle with sleep can take some simple steps to alleviate such problems.

establish and stick to a sleep schedule. Routine can make all the difference when it comes to falling asleep and maintaining that sleep through the night. That's because the

sleep-wake cycle is governed by the circadian clock in the brain. This circadian function is strengthened when the body regularly wakes up and goes to bed at the same time. Stick to the routine on weekends, when many people tend to sleep in later. Upsetting a sleeping schedule on the weekend can make it more difficult for the body to readjust to the routine come Sunday night and Monday morning.

emphasize a good sleep environment. Establish sleep environments that are dark, quiet, comfortable and cool. If an environment is not dark enough, individuals can wear eye shades or hang blackout curtains on windows to prevent outside light from entering their homes. Noise and other distractions, including cell phones that ring or vibrate each time a message is incoming, should be addressed. If necessary, men and women can

store their cell phones in the kitchen or another room in the house overnight, reducing the likelihood that sleep will be interrupted by incoming phone calls, emails or text messages. Noise distractions, such as a partner snoring, can be remedied with ear plugs.

Replace mattresses and pillows if necessary. Some sleeping problems are a byproduct of mattresses and pillows that are old and don't offer enough support. Quality mattresses can last a long time but should be replaced when they no longer provide a comfortable sleeping environment. Mattresses that make noise, feel lumpy or sag should be replaced. In addition, if sleeping partners routinely wake each other up when one person gets up to use the restroom or get a glass of water, then chances are that mattress is no longer capable of providing an optimal sleep environment.

Pillows also should be cleaned regularly to ensure they are not covered in allergens, which can negatively affect an individual's sleep.

Don't eat or drink alcohol too close to bedtime. The body needs adequate time to digest meals, so individuals who routinely eat shortly before going to bed might find it hard to fall asleep because the body is still working to digest foods. Alcohol should also be avoided before going to bed, as it can negatively affect the body's ability to get a deep sleep. Though alcohol right before bed might help men and women fall asleep more quickly, the sleep they get won't be as restorative as if they had abstained from alcohol in the hours before they went to bed.

A better night’s sleep

Now, more than ever before, people want to stay active well into their golden years. But in the midst of healthcare system reforms they face a dilemma: How to seek out the highest quality of care without incurring unmanageable costs.

To reconcile this problem, consumers are beginning to comparison-shop for healthcare services, the way they would for any other service they need or desire.

However, figuring out the cost of care and out-of-pocket expenses is not as easy it sounds.

The Today Show recently aired a segment on the costs to deliver a baby. NBC News contacted a number of hospitals at different times, and received varying pricing quotes from the very same hospitals. In an effort to help consumers understand what the cost will be prior to surgery, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and independent physician groups across the country are making it easier for patients to get an estimate prior to receiving services such as an MRI or elective surgery in order to improve quality of life.

“If they do a little research, prospective orthopedic surgery patients will discover the fact that the ASC provides quality of patient care and substantial cost savings over a hospital setting,” says Mary O’Brien, CEO at Fox Valley Orthopedics in Geneva.

“For example, most of our patients typically pay 30 to 50 percent less for diagnostic services, and about 50 percent less for surgical procedures,” adds O’Brien. “But most importantly, the quality of care is exceptional.”

For three decades, ASCs have offered patients a choice for surgical services; namely, a high-quality, cost-effective alternative to having surgery in the hospital.

How is this possible? Most ASCs are independently owned and focus on a number of specialized surgical procedures. By specializing on a narrow range of services, an ASC is able to maximize patient benefits – and a practice’s efficiency and productivity – while at the same time minimizing cost.

These savings – in part – are passed along to the consumer. The end result is a higher level of patient satisfaction as well as savings.

Small business owners – who report health insurance costs as the most critical problem they face today – also benefit when employees patronize ASCs. Cost of care reductions enable them to keep their overall healthcare costs low.

In the last few years, Medicare and commercial insurance payers have substantially increased the portion patients must pay for healthcare services, which sometimes interferes with their ability to budget for procedures. So while aging baby

boomers and gen-Xers want to keep moving as long as possible, they need to find ways to cope with soaring out-of-pocket deductibles when planning for elective procedures that will keep them healthier in the long run.

Many American consumers have become more cost-conscious in light of the challenges of increased out-of-pocket expenses and the struggling economy...with good reason. According to recent Health Care Cost Institute – employees’ wages grew by just 3 percent for Americans in 2011 and 2012, while the national average for out-of-pocket medical expenditures increased by 4.8 percent.

Comparison-shopping for elective surgical procedures can result in substantial savings for patients.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the growth of ASCs is due to the numerous benefits to the patient including:

• Technological advances• Positive outcomes• Specialized care from highly-

trained nursing staff • Higher staff-to-patient ratios

resulting in personalized care • Less time under anesthesia • Lower infection rates and

readmissions• Convenient access and

scheduling• Shorter wait times• Cost savings

According to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and Ambulatory Surgery Foundation, 92 percent of patients surveyed report feeling satisfied after choosing an ASC for healthcare.

“I believe that ASCs offer the patient-centered, cost-effective, high quality of care essential in today’s healthcare environment, “ says O’Brien.

“Patients deserve choices when it comes to surgery,” says Deborah Lee Crook, CEO at Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center, in St. Charles. “Who wouldn’t choose to save money for quality services, positive outcomes, and superior patient care?” •

So while aging

baby boomers and gen-Xers want to keep moving as long as possible, they need to find ways to cope with soaring out of- pocket deductibles when planning for elective procedures that will keep them healthier in the long run.

According to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and Ambulatory Surgery Foundation, 92 percent of patients surveyed report feeling satisfied after choosing an ASC for healthcare.

“I believe that ASCs offer the patient centered, cost-effective, high quality of care essential in today’s healthcare environment, “ says O’Brien.

“Patients deserve choices when it comes to surgery,” says Deborah Lee Crook, CEO at Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center, in St. Charles.

“Who wouldn’t choose to save money for quality services, positive outcomes, and superior patient care?”

Even with all the advancements in medicine, treatment is focused on symptomatic relief versus addressing the cause of disease. Billions of dollars are pouring into research to solve these problems. Yet, natural, preventative solutions can be realized from eating well, getting exercise, and reducing stress.

At our clinic, Hestrup Family Chiropractic-Natural Health Improvement Center, there is hope and potential for a healthy lifestyle full of energy and vitality to live wholly and accomplish your goals and dreams. At our clinic we want our patients to achieve optimum overall—physical and mental—health through education, gentle chiropractic

care, massage therapy, acupuncture and whole food nutrition.

The best cure for disease is health—which seems like a silly thing to say but nothing could be more true! Healthy individuals do not get sick often nor do they suffer from allergies. People who are healthy sometimes are gifted with a strong genetic foundation, but more commonly, healthy people do the right things to build and maintain their health. When good health is realized allergies and the common cold do not arise. You can choose this lifestyle too!

We are helping patients build their health in order

to strengthen their immune system. Concisely, we promote health so disease stays away. We want others to avoid the cold, flu, and allergy seasons by supporting their health all year long, just as we have learned to do.

Our clinic has helped many individuals improve their health through whole food nutrition. We strive to educate patients so they understand what foods energize the body for work, play and healing.

Although our environment has become polluted causing low-quality nutritional support in our foods, here at Hestrup Family Chiropractic-Natural Health Improvement Center, we know the solution to build

health is with whole foods and whole food nutrition.

The basics of BooStInG Metabolism

Men and women looking to shed a few pounds and keep those pounds off often look for ways to boost their metabolisms. Some may not know just what metabolism means, and though it is a complicated combination of processes, metabolism is perhaps best explained as the sum of those processes, each of which is instituted to convert food into energy. So it’s no surprise that so many people, especially men and women whose metabolisms have begun to slow down, want to boost their metabolism and turn that food into energy more quickly. The following are a handful of easy ways to boost your metabolism.

eat more often. Eating more often benefits the body because doing so stimulates metabolism, reassuring the body that food will be coming on a regular basis. When meals are skipped

or there are long intervals between meals, the body reacts as if it might run out of food and begins to store fat. Many adults have been turned on to the concept of grazing, an approach to diet wherein adherents eat small portions of food every two to three hours instead of the more traditional three square meals per day.

eat the right foods. Grazing is only effective when men and women eat the right foods. Each small meal should still have nutritional value just as if it were a large meal. When eating smaller meals, include healthy sources of protein and fiber. Vegetables tend to be especially beneficial because they are high in fiber, a nondigestible carbohydrate that is hard for the body to break down. As the body works hard to break down fiber, it’s burning energy and boosting its metabolism along the way. Fish is another potentially beneficial food for

those looking to boost their metabolisms, as studies have shown that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils increase the levels of fat-burning enzymes in the body while decreasing the body’s level offat-storage enzymes.

add lean muscle. Lean muscle can boost metabolism, so a workout dominated by cardiovascular exercise won’t have as positive an impact on metabolism as one that includes a combination of weight training and aerobic exercise. When muscles are worked hard, the body needs to work hard to recover and rebuild those muscles, burning more calories and boosting metabolism as a result.

Don’t believe everything you read or hear. Suggestions abound as to ways to improve metabolism. Unfortunately, many of these suggestions boost metabolism but not enough to help people lose weight, which is the ultimate goal of many people looking to boost their metabolisms. For example, green tea has its proponents who feel it can have a significant impact on metabolism thanks to EGCG, a compound found in the tea that has been proven to elevate metabolism. However, the impact of EGCG on boosting metabolism is negligible, and therefore won’t make much of an impact on a person’s weight. The same can be said about capsaicin, an active component found in chili peppers that some feel boosts metabolism enough to promote weight loss. Though capsaicin can boost metabolism slightly, studies have shown that influence is not significant enough to affect a person’s weight.

Don’t get too comfortable. Modern technology may be a reason why waist sizes are getting bigger. Heating and cooling systems may be must-have items, but when the body is too comfortable, it burns less energy to stay warm in the winter or comfortably cool in the summer. A study from the National Institute of Health Clinical Center found that people who slept in a room kept at 66 F burned 7 percent more calories than those who slept in a room at 75 F. Sleeping in a cooler room may just be the easiest way for men and women to boost their metabolisms.

Boosting metabolism is an easy way to shed extra pounds, reach your fitness goals and achieve a healthy lifestyle.
