This is an exciting time to join the Learning Disability Service in Grampian. The service is being developed to provide specialist forensic services, alongside its generic learning disability services, which has led to the creation of a new Consultant post.

The posts will be based at Elmwood on the Royal Cornhill Hospital site, Aberdeen. Elmwood is a recently opened unit with a 12 bed Acute Admission Ward, a 12 bed Close Supervision Unit and a small Day Hospital. The vast majority of Consultant clinical work is now community based.

Post 1) Consultant in Psychiatry of Learning Disability Areas of clinical responsibility will be agreed with the successful candidate and will include providing psychiatric leadership to the multi-disciplinary teams. The postholder will have the option to be responsible for a two/three day Shetland clinic twice a year. A great deal of liaison work is required, especially with local authorities, voluntary and private sector providers of care and with education. The post holder may also be appointed as Clinical Director of the Learning Disability Service (on an EPA basis) if they wish to consider this role.

The post is advertised as full-time. Candidates unable for personal reasons to work full-time however, will be eligible to be considered for the post and, if appointed, an appropriately amended Job Description will be agreed.

Post 2) Consultant in Psychiatry of Forensic Learning DisabilityThis post involves working with Forensic Adults with a Learning Disability and covers both rural and urban populations. Areas of clinical responsibility will be agreed with the successful candidate and will include providing psychiatric leadership for a forensic out-patient and in-patient service. It is anticipated that this will involve development of the existing 12-bedded close supervision in-patient facility to attaining low secure; community responsibility for patients referred by the Police, Procurator Fiscal, Crown Office and Solicitors as well as patients referred through the multi-disciplinary team and input to learning disabled offenders in the Scottish Prison Service.

The service has active programmes of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and it is expected that the appointees will contribute to these. The appointees will be expected to register with the Continuing Professional Development Programme of the Royal College of Psychiatrists for which all costs will be met by NHS Grampian. There are excellent opportunities for research and close links exist between NHS Grampian and the University Departments of Mental Health and Psychology. The appointees will be expected to contribute to audit and other elements of clinical governance.

These units take patients from the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire (population just over 500,000) as well as from Orkney and Shetland. The acute service is staffed by a combination of consultants in Clinical Pharmacology and Geriatric Medicine, with some input from Neurology. There are good links with Neuro- and Vascular Surgery. Investigative facilities include CT, MRI, vascular laboratory and TCD. The Clinical Pharmacology and Acute Stroke Units support a portfolio of research activities in the primary and secondary prevention of stroke, including acute intervention.
