Welcome to the Autumn term career guideThe events in this guide are designed to help you decide which career is right for you. Inside, you’ll find skills workshops, careers events and other useful sessions. To book your place please visit www.reading.ac.uk/careers/events where you will find out the relevant room numbers when signing up.

OctoberTuesday 19 Getting into teaching 1.00 pm – 1.50 pm

Carrington Building, room 101Fancy a career as a teacher? Find out about the different training routes and how to get relevant experience. Schemes covered will include the PGCE, GTP and Student Associates Scheme (SAS).

Wednesday 20 Career actions for finalists 1.00 pm – 1.30 pmCarrington Building, room 101There can seem too much to do careers wise in your final year. This short 25 minute session will cut through the complexity by giving a series of tips on what to do and when, and help you get organised in your final year.

Thursday 21 No careers ideas 1.00 pm – 1.50 pmCarrington Building, room 101This session will look at what you are really good at, the skills and experi-ence you can offer employers and any areas you may need help with.

Monday 25 Making the most of the fair 1.00 pm – 1.50 pmCarrington Building, room 101Does the thought of meeting employers make you feel uneasy? Find out why employers are there and gain insight on how to make the best impression.

Wednesday 27 The Autumn Careers and Placements Fair 11.00am – 3.00 pm

Palmer BuildingIt’s not often that you get to meet over 60 graduate employers, gap year organisations and postgraduate course providers in just one day. Whether you are in your final year, interested in postgraduate study, volunteering opportunities, or wanting to organise your gap year, there is something for everybody.

Thursday 28 Interviews & applications presented by PWC 1.00 pm – 1.50 pm

In this session you will receive information on the do’s and don’ts of interviews and helpful insight into some interview techniques. You will also get some hints and tips on how to fill out application forms.

Wednesday 3 Law Fair 1.00 pm – 4.00 pmPalmer BuildingMeet a range of leading local and national law firms and find out how you can secure a job with them. All Law and non Law students are welcome.

Wednesday 3 Journalism workshop 1.00 pm – 3.00 pmBook at Careers ReceptionNews Associates are offering a free workshop on campus to give students the opportunity to sample life as a news reporter. You will get to write your own story and receive feedback on your work. You will also get to pitch your burning career questions to their journalists. Places are limited so please sign up online.

Thursday 4 Careers in the EU 1.00 pm – 1.50 pmCarrington Building, room 101Want to use your languages and work in Europe? Come to this session to find information on career and internship opportunities and how to maximise your chances in the application process.

Friday 5 Mock interviews by PWC throughout the dayCareers Advisory Service Sign up at the Careers Reception for a practice interview. You will be given one-to-one feedback. CV or application form must be handed in before the interview.

Monday 8 7 easy steps to a great CV 1.00 pm – 1.50 pmCarrington Building, room 101Photo or no photo, white paper or pink, one side or two? Get the answers to these questions from a careers professional and get an interview for the job you want!

Wednesday 10 Strengths workshop 1.00 pm – 3.00 pmBook at Careers ReceptionDo you want to identify what you are good at and what energises you? This workshop will help you identify and unlock the unique strengths you can bring to bear in job choice, selecting employers, and applying for jobs.

Thursday 11 Construction fair 11.00 am – 2.00 pmURS Building 2S21This is your opportunity to come along and meet with representatives from companies offering not only graduate positions, but also summer vacation and supervised work experience placements.

Carrington Building, room 101Find out about what previous graduates have done, explore what will give you job satisfaction and find out how to make your ideas a reality.

Wednesday 17 Business Game presented by ICAEWs 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm

Book at Careers ReceptionInterested in a career in professional services? Then this interactive game is for you! This game will give you the chance to find out how challenging and dynamic a career in a Professional Services firm can be.

Thursday 18 E-tray exercise presented by KPMG 1.00 pm – 1.50 pm

Carrington Building, room 101This session will give you the chance to practice the popular ‘e-tray exer-cise’ as used by some graduate recruiters. This is a paper-based simulation of the computer-based exercise and tests your ability to prioritise, juggle and make quick, effective decisions.
