May Reflection:
If a man is called to be a
street-sweeper, he
should sweep streets as
Michelangelo painted,
or Beethoven
composed music, or
Shakespeare wrote
poetry. He should
sweep streets so well
that all the hosts of
heaven and earth will
pause to say, "Here
lived a great street-
sweeper who did his
job well."

present Hazelwick’s cheque to
Mr Peter Mansfield Clark, Director of
Crawley Open House
Presentation to Crawley Open House At the end of April, two Year 10 students (Spencer Chase and Sophie Penketh),
accompanied by Mr Palmer and myself, were delighted to be able to present a cheque for
£3,265.17 to Mr Peter Mansfield-Clark, the Director of Crawley Open House, a local
organisation dedicated to providing support and services for those suffering the effects of
homelessness, unemployment, loneliness, discrimination, or other forms of social exclusion.
The money was raised from a variety of fundraising initiatives by students from across the
school and will be put towards the cost of a new minibus, so badly needed by the Open
House.
Welcome to our May newsletter.
The summer examination season is now underway and I would like to wish students in Years
11 to 13 every success with their examinations. I am sure all their revision and hard work
will prove beneficial in the coming weeks.
The Year 6 Induction visits began during the final week of this half-term. Northgate visited
on Tuesday and Milton Mount on Wednesday. Almost one hundred pupils enjoyed a full day
at Hazelwick trying on uniform, finding their way around, enjoying the canteen and having
two lessons taught by Hazelwick staff. Feedback from the children and their teachers who
joined us for the day was very positive.
The redevelopment and refurbishment of the site continues; many parents who attended the
recent Parents’ Evenings commented extremely positively on how good the school is looking
and how amazing the changes have been over the past year. Further work is planned for
next half-term and over the summer holidays.

Year 7 went above and
beyond a task that was set
for homework recently in
French. They were asked to
research a French town,
note down key vocabulary
and write a short paragraph,
using key phrases about
what there is or isn’t in
their chosen town. Here are
some fine examples of the
work that was submitted as
well as some pictures of
Year 7 students happily at
work during a French lesson
in a computer room. Many
of them are very excited
about the forthcoming trip
to Boulogne-Sur-Mer.

On Tuesday 14 May, Year 7 students from
block one visited Lewes Castle and did a variety
of activities. We got a chance to have a tour of
the castle and learn about its history before
looking at some genuine medieval artefacts to
try to work out what they were. Students also
got a chance to dress up as medieval people and
act out scenes about life in this period. Some of
the outfits chosen were very interesting! The
students and staff that attended the trip had a
great day and we are looking forward to taking
block two students next month, when hopefully
the weather will be more pleasant!

Milton Mount Primary School: Forest Schools Day On Thursday 9 May, four Year 9
students, Elise Jays, Ahmed
Marzook, Haroon Mahmood and
myself, went to Milton Mount
School to help with a Forest
Schools event. There were about
28 children ranging between Years
1- 6. We began with a team-
building exercise that included
walking around the forest as
certain animals, which helped us
to get to know each other and
learn everybody’s names. This was
the perfect opportunity to get to
know some of the children who
we would be working with
throughout the day.
The first task was to get some
mud mixed with water and makes
‘muddies’. These were little
people who we dressed up in
leaves and other natural objects
that we found around the forest.
Eventually we were to make little
huts for the muddies to live in, but first many people had a go at collecting the wood to assemble the camp fire and light
it. Some people took longer than others but eventually we had a fire on the go which we would use for cooking lunch.
We had a small break and then started the muddies huts. There were four groups and each student had a group to help.
The imagination put into the
creation of the huts was amazing
and very interesting. Each group
worked well together to create
original huts.
After building for a while, we had
cooked meatballs and some
bread. It was delicious! Most
children then went back to
finishing off the huts, or chasing
each other around until they ran
out of energy, which never
seemed to happen! Later on we
were all summoned around the
camp fire for some smores,
which were very messy but very
nice too.
Finally, we had a few games on
the field, which were very
energetic and resulted in much
laughter from everyone. It was
brilliant to see everyone having
such a nice time and getting on
so well. Thank you for the
opportunity to help out!

On Monday 13 May, 30 students from Year 8 took a trip to both the Houses of Parliament and the London Dungeon.
At the Houses of Parliament, they were taken on a tour of the Palace of Westminster, which included going inside both the
House of Commons and the House of Lords. Some of the students assured their teachers that they would be returning
there later in life as MPs! The students had the opportunity to run a mini-election which demonstrated how the voting
system in Britain works. All students were really enthusiastic about this and came up with some interesting party names and
slogans. The students were excellent ambassadors for the school and were a credit to Hazelwick.
At the London Dungeon, the students experienced the dark side of London’s history. After encounters with Sweeney Todd,
Guy Fawkes and Jack the Ripper, there were some hoarse throats but also lots of laughter!
Thank you to Mrs Kvalheim and Mr Myers for making this trip possible.

How many have you read? Did your
favourite make the list? Why not keep
this list and see how many titles you can
read in a year?
We hope to feature the World Book Day

Music News! (from Miss Patey)
Hazelwick School Summer Concert - Thursday 27 June 2013 We are very excited to announce that our Summer Concert is fast approaching and we look forward to Hazelwick
students providing us with a varied and enjoyable selection of musical entertainment for the evening of 27 June.
This year’s concert will be the last performance opportunity for those musicians who are leaving us next year and we
look forward to giving them a happy send-off and thanking them for their considerable contribution to Music over
their time here at Hazelwick. In their wake, we have many students coming up from Key Stage 3 who are keen to fill
their shoes and next year we welcome our largest number of GCSE students that the school has seen for some
years. We encourage any students taking GCSE next year to get involved this summer in preparation for the start of
the course in September.
Tickets - Tickets will be available to purchase though our on-line payment system on the Hazelwick School website
at a cost of £3 per adult and £1.50 per child. Please purchase your tickets as early as possible, as last year we ran out
of seats due to the number of guests who attended.
Rehearsals – Regular rehearsals ensure good quality performances, so don't forget to get down to Music at the right
time to ensure you are part of the performance this summer!
Soul Band - Monday Lunchtimes 12.30 - 1.00pm *
Whole School Choir - Wednesday 3.15 - 4.05pm
Samba Band - Tuesday Lunchtimes 12.30 - 1.00pm *
* Students may bring food to any rehearsals which are held at lunchtimes.
Concert at The Hawth –
Monday 17 June
On Monday 17 June, we will take a selection of students to The Hawth
Theatre to perform in the annual Senior Citizens Concert as part of the
Crawley Festival. This will involve students taking a coach to the venue
during Lesson 4 and returning before the end of school. This concert is
always very much appreciated in the community and we are keen to take
some soloists this year to give students an insight into performing on
stage in a professional venue.
Details of this trip will be sent soon through ParentMail, so please watch
this space if you are interested in attending!
Samba Band will once again get into full swing after the
May half-term holiday. We are often asked to visit local
primary schools and events to play; so, if you love
making loud music, then why not get down to Room
6 on Tuesday lunchtimes from Tuesday 4 June. No
previous experience required - just come and have a
go.

the baby and stood on the scales while the nurse read off 78kg. Then the nurse held the baby while I read off 69kg.
Finally, I held the nurse whilst the baby read off 137kg. What is the combined weight of all three?
A 142kg B 147kg C 206kg D 215kg E 284kg
Answers to April’s questions were:
Question 1: B ( 80 + 20 = 100 )
Question 2: D (1/2)

Quicksticks Workshop at
Three Bridges Junior
School In mid-May, Mrs Menniss ran a
Quicksticks workshop at Three
Bridges Infants School. This
involved 120 students getting a
taster of Quicksticks in two hours.
All of the students thoroughly
enjoyed themselves and made
rapid progress in the sessions.
Hopefully, this will mean more
hockey players coming to
Hazelwick in the future!
Under-16 Boys’ Hockey
Congratulations to the Under 16 Hockey team, who won their final game against Oathall 2-0. These boys have been a real
credit to the school, acting as leaders and officials on numerous occasions both for younger students at Hazelwick and at
Quicksticks tournaments for the local primary schools. We wish you well for the future.
Individual Success! Congratulations to Tom Page (7.13) who has
been selected to play for the FA South-East
Regional Cerebral Palsy Centre of Excellence
which is run by Chelsea FC. He played for the
South-East in the Youth National Cup. They
won the group stages, beating the North-East
and North and went on to the semi–finals
which, unfortunately, they lost and came fourth
overall. Well done, Tom. We look forward to
hearing more about your progress.
Congratulations to
Charlie Hilton (7.11)
who plays for Ifield
Golf Club, as they
have been chosen to
represent Sussex in
the English Junior
Championships on
10-11 August. Good
luck, Charlie!
Congratulations to Holly Talbut-Smith (11.56), who has been chosen
to play football for Brighton Ladies Reserve team. This means Holly
is one step closer to playing for the First team. Well done, Holly.

On Thursday 9 May, a group of 23 students from Years 7–9 spent a day at Blackland Farm in East Grinstead, tackling the
‘Crate Challenge’ and archery.
They made great attempts at scaling the crates, despite it being a really windy day and at points the crate towers took on
a life of their own, swaying dramatically in the breeze. Gulshan Akhtar and Janat Jadran teamed up and were very close to
going as high as it is possible to go in this particular challenge.
Many of the students were fantastic at archery and Emma Tullett repeatedly hit the bull’s eye. Lewis Thomas built up a
good score.
It was a great day out and the students made a fantastic effort to work as a team and to make each other feel included.
