Starting at age 6 and until your child turns 18, your child is required to attend school or comply with the homeschool laws. You may homeschool in Tennessee by enrolling your child in one of the three types of schools described below. As a general rule, you are required to teach your child for at least 180 days per school year, and you must be a parent or legal guardian of the child. (You may employ a tutor who has the same educational qualifications that you are required to have to do some or all of the teaching.) Option 1: Independent Homeschool Before the start of the school year, you must submit a notice of intent to the superintendent of your local school district (also called a local education agency, or LEA) “for purpose of reporting only.” Your notice must include the names, number, ages, and grade levels of the children you are homeschooling; the location of your school; the curriculum to be offered (no particular subjects are required); the proposed hours of instruction; and your educational qualifications. Proof that your child has been immunized or has a medical or a religious exemption from immunization must be attached to your notice of intent. You must teach at least four hours per school day for 180 days each academic year. You must maintain attendance records, which must be available for inspection by the local su- perintendent and must be submitted to the superintendent at the end of each school year. In grades 5, 7, and 9, your child must take a standardized test administered by the com- missioner of education, by someone designated by the commissioner, or by a professional testing service approved by the LEA. Option 3: Category III Distance-learning School“Category III” schools are non-public schools that are accredited by various accrediting agencies. Category • III schools must report student attendance information to the director of the public school system where the student lives. School policies for Category III schools vary by school and we encourage families interested in this homeschooling option to thoroughly review the requirements of the schools they are considering.

An Important Note on RecordkeepingIt is highly recommended that you keep detailed records of your homeschool program. These records may be helpful if you face an investigation regarding your homeschooling, or if your student needs to furnish proof of education. These records should include attendance records, information on the textbooks and workbooks your student used, samples of your student’s schoolwork, correspondence with school officials, portfolios and test results, and any other documents showing that your child is receiving an appropriate education in compliance with the law. You should maintain these records for at least two years. You should keep your student’s high school records and proof of compliance with the home education laws during the high school years on file forever.

What Are the Ramifications of Not Complying with the Law?Records of education and proof that your child is being legally homeschooled may be requested in a number of situations such as obtaining a driver's license if your child is a minor, enlisting in the military, applying to col-leges, or demonstrating eligibility for Social Security benefits. Proof of legal education can also be requested by the court system or local school district in instances of child neglect allegations or truancy complaints. Instances when information or proof is needed is not the time to try to backtrack or fill in missing information. It is better to be prepared, because it’s not a matter of “if” information will be requested, it’s “when.” This article was reprinted and adapted from information provided by the Homeschool Legal Defense Association. For more detailed information regarding legally homeschooling in Tennessee and the surrounding states, please visit HSLDA.org. HSLDA is a national advocacy organization that supports the right of parents to educate their children at home. They are dedicated to protecting the legality of your homeschool while equipping you to successfully teach your children. MHEA recommends membership in HSLDA. 2019-20 Track and Field Is Underway!MHEA Track and Field is coming off of a very successful 2018 - 19 season, in which several athletes posted marks in track and field events garnering state-wide ranking (for all schools). Just as significantly, each athlete improved personal bests during the competition season. The team is six weeks into the indoor season and has grown significantly since this time last year. Many new student athletes have joined the team, along with those who returned from last year. The team is on pace to exceed the 36 total athletes of last year on the middle school and high school teams. Indoor practices are held Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30 - 5:00 pm at White Station Church of Christ Life Center; where athletes do conditioning and running drills, strength training, flexibility, and coordination de-velopment. They use resistance bands, an adjustable plyometric box, weight and treadmill machines, and three hurdles for indoor hurdle drills.MHEA Track and Field is beginning to build its indoor meet season which, due to the lack of indoor track facilities in the area, requires out of town travel. The outdoor practice and track meet season begins in early March.Though the team has some very experienced and accomplished athletes, coaches are certainly open to working with novices who want to explore their potential in this sport, which offers enough variety that most athletes are able to find events where they can enjoy some success (MHEA has a significant focus on personal improvement). For more information, please email head coach Bill Duff at [email protected].

Carson Stilgenbauer (6th grade), left; the Villem family, center; and Danielle Allen (12th grade), right; were a few of the MHEA members who enjoyed decorating gingerbread structures.

Little White Lies and Big WhoppersKris Soler, Field Trip Coordinator and At-Large MHEA Board Member

“What’s so funny?” my husband asked me one evening after the kids were in bed. “I’m reading an article that asks readers what was the funniest lie they ever told their kids.” He had a look of consternation on his face when I glanced at him. After a few beats he said, “I don’t think I’ve ever lied to the kids.” “Of course you haven’t,” I deadpanned. “I am married to Charles Ingalls, sans fiddle. And beard.”

I remember telling my toddler twins that I was eating baby carrots so they would leave me alone to eat the cheese doodles in peace. I’ve told my kids their finger paintings were spectacular when they really looked like something a cat coughed up. I’ve lied about the time on the clock; about who got what and how much; that Santa only visits kids who don’t fight; and the classic every mom uses, “I’ll think about it.” Caroline “Ma” Ingalls I am not.

Some kids are easy to fool. So are some adults. All of us, at some point, get bamboozled by the enemy. We pay heed to the lies he whispers. We believe it when he tells us that we’re not very good at parenting, or that we will never get our act together, or that Child A is a wee bit obtuse. We believe it when he tells us that other families have it so much better than we do.

So some of us might tell our children that the grocery store ran out of ice cream; and while that particular whopper doesn’t cause irrevocable harm per se, it can contribute to a pattern to which we grow accustomed. God wants to elevate us, not have us be intertwined with what the enemy regularly engages in doing.

A lie is a lie; regardless of whether it’s funny or harmless, whether it’s something we tell ourselves, or something the enemy throws at us. The more you walk in God's truth, the easier it will become to recognize the enemy’s attempts to ensnare you in his lies.

The Father of Lies wants you to feel undervalued and unappreciated. He wants to keep you exhausted, overextended, and too busy to cultivate substantial relationships. He wants you to feel like everyone else is smarter, prettier, and more fantastic than you are. He wants you to believe that everyone but you has a clean, organized house, smooth homeschooling days, a romantic spouse, no bills, cooperative children, and a reliable babysitter.

You were specifically beckoned to instruct your children. No one else can mother your kids the way you can. And if you believe what Psalm 139:14 has to say, then you must know that you are worth so much more than what the enemy would have you believe. "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well." Psalm 139:14

Eta Sigma Alpha Honor Society, ETA ChapterCindy Pillow and Melodi Brewer, Sponsors

The Honor Society students had a great day serving at the West Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery for their fall service project on Saturday, November 9. Students placed flags in honor of those who so bravely served our country. The morning began with different groups gathering for a brief service to pay respects to those who have served. The students were honored to serve the community and those who have given of themselves to protect our freedoms. Eta Sigma Alpha is already preparing for an exciting Field Day for MHEA elementary students! Field Day will take place at Bellevue Baptist Church on Friday, April 3. Be watching the weekly email announcements for more details on registration.
