Learners who require additional support can be assessed and appropriate support discussed. We can provide in-class support for learners or we can offer assistance outside the classroom, examples include:• Assessment and specialist support from highly qualified tutors for learners with dyslexia• Educational interpreters for hearing impaired/deaf learners • Special arrangements, such as extra time in examinations • In-class or mentoring support for learners with mental health or emotional difficulties, physical or mobility disabilities, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) needs or difficulties with learning.

Why Harrogate College?

Harrogate College learners join us for a number of reasons:

Students’ Union The Students’ Union provides benefits and services to learners including a variety of social events and activities to take part in. When you join you can use your Students’ Union card to save money offering you a wide range of discounts with national companies. You must be over 16 to join.

BOSS Ambassadors BOSS stands for Body of Learner Support - a name thought up by learners. Each year we aim to have a team of between 30-50 learners who can get more involved with College life. BOSS Ambassadors support the Learner Development Co-ordinator in developing and delivering opportunities for learners, but they also act as the voice of the learners, bringing issues and ideas forward in order to ensure life in College runs smoothly and is enjoyed by all.

BOSS Ambassadors take part in social activities together and also receive regular freebies and merchandise. On top of this, they take away valuable skills and experience to enhance their CV (Curriculum Vitae).

Enrichment If you are under 19 years of age when you join Harrogate College you will automatically benefit from the College’s Enrichment programme. This includes a series of stimulating sessions and activities around relevant topics that will help you gain valuable knowledge and skills.

There are also themed celebration weeks where learners can attend workshops, events and take part in activities around particular issues such as drug and alcohol awareness or sexual health.

On top of this, the Learner Development Co-ordinator will organise recreational events for everyone to take part in, including 5-a-side football tournaments, outdoor ice-skating celebration events and trips to local and national attractions.

The Enrichment programme is a great way to meet learners from different areas and try new things.

Café and RestaurantThe College’s café and restaurant provide a fine selection of food at a an affordable price. The Metro restaurant is fully licensed and offers modern British and international cuisine.

The restaurant is open for staff, learners and visitors to enjoy à la carte, Bistro or Light Bite menus.

Libraries/Learning Resource CentreThe College’s library is well stocked with reading and learning materials to support your course work. There is a wide range of CDs, books, videos, DVDs, newspapers and journals, as well as general interest and fictional titles. Study spaces, internet facilities and other electronic resources are also available. A team of helpful staff are happy to assist.

Information Communication TechnologyHarrogate College’s Library incorporates over 90 PCs with Microsoft Office software plus internet and e-mail access for learners and staff. Scanning, laser and colour printing, and presentation facilities are also available. The PCs provide access to the College’s Virtual Learning Environment. Some PCs are available with specialist hardware and software to support dyslexic learners and learners with disabilities. Whatever career path you choose, ICT (Information Communication Technology) will be an essential tool. With internet access and personal support in the Learning Resource Centre, you’re in safe hands. The College also has an excellent provision for Media, Art and Design learners, including a suite of Apple Mac computers and high level multimedia facilities.

Money Matters The rules and regulations covering financial help are dependent upon a person’s individual circumstances. Please ask us for advice on whether you’re likely to be eligible for help and how to apply.

If you have been receiving support at school it is likely that you will be entitled to financial help to study at College.

What does it cost to study at Harrogate College?Full-time education is free to everyone under 19*, and parents and guardians will still receive child benefits for people under 19 studying full-time. Learners may be eligible to apply to their Local Education Authority for a travel pass to help towards the cost of travel to College.

Full-time learners aged 19* and over may be required to pay their tuition fees, additional to the registration and exam fees in line with Learning and Skills Council funding requirements and the Further Education Fees Policy.* Subject to status and residency

Please contact us if you have any questions about whether you could qualify for a tuition fee reduction. Some courses may have additional costs for materials such as books, materials, trips, as well as examination and registration fees. Tution fees for work-based programmes are costed differently.

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)If you are between 16-18 years old and you are planning to continue in full-time Further Education you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA). An EMA is a weekly allowance paid directly into the learner’s bank account. The actual amount is assessed on your household income.

Financial Support

Harrogate College has created a truly inspiring area to take learning out of the classroom. The area is designed to provide three key elements:

• A training area for students on Childcare and Playwork courses acknowledging the importance of outdoor play and learning for young children.

• An outdoor learning environment for students across Harrogate College to become involved in outdoor projects to enhance the learning experience.

Outdoor Learning Area

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)If you are 19 years old or over and planning to study full-time on a first full Level 2 (five GCSEs or equivalent) or first full Level 3 (two A Levels or equivalent) qualification you may be eligible for an Adult Learning Grant (ALG).

An ALG is a weekly allowance based on the income of the individual or a couple and is paid directly into the learner’s bank account.

Care to Learn and Childcare FundThese funds are designed to assist eligible learners with the cost of childcare whilst they are attending College.

Childcare There is a range of childcare providers in the area including day nurseries, out of school clubs and registered childminders. Learners who are eligible for funding support will need to ensure that the provider is OFSTED registered.

Learner Support FundThese funds are intended to help eligible learners in difficult financial circumstances with the cost of attending their course, for example books, materials, travel, examination and/or registration fees.

Choice of Courses

Harrogate College offers a broad range of qualifications from Pre-Entry to Degree level. The qualifications offered are certified by nationally recognised awarding bodies.

GCSEs GCSEs are qualifications based on academic study, though often with a practical content.

NVQs(NVQs) National Vocational Qualifications offer training in job skills within the vocational area of your choice. NVQ programmes concentrate on the practical skills necessary to perform a particular job in the workplace. This training can be carried out either at the workplace or in the College.

NVQs are designed to be studied at a time scale that suits you and yourindividual needs. Harrogate College has a substantial employer network to ensure that the best work placement opportunities are provided for you.

First and National DiplomasThese qualifications are available in vocational related subjects. The courses do have some external assessment, but they do not have any formal examinations.

The courses provide an academic vocational qualification and allow learners to specialise in their chosen career choice.

Diplomas - A new qualification

Diplomas – A new qualificationThe Diploma is an alternative to the traditional GCSE or A Level route, but keeps just as many options open. It’s a qualification that could lead to further study or to a job with training. The Diploma will help you to develop the skills and experience that employers, Universities and Colleges really value. These skills include teamwork and creative thinking, and will help to prepare you for wherever you want to go in life.

What are the components of the Diploma?

Principle learning This is a freestanding qualification, which focuses on developing understanding, knowledge and skills in a specific employment sector and applying these skills to work-based situations, functional skills as well as work-relevant learning.

You will also study core subjects including English, Maths and ICT as part of your Diploma. Achieving a good level of these skills is essential for you to succeed in any business or learning environment.

Life SkillsA Diploma helps you to develop personal, learning and thinking skills, including team working, communication and self-management, which are vital in both life and work.

Learner ProjectWhen you come to the end of studying your Diploma qualification, you will complete a learner project to show that you can apply what you’ve learnt in a practical context.

Additional and Specialist LearningYou will choose an additional qualification from the same sector as your Diploma or from a different sector to broaden your learning experience.

What are the Levels of Learning?There are three levels of Diploma:

• The Foundation Diploma is equivalent to five GCSEs at grades D-G. • The Higher Diploma is equivalent to seven GCSEs at grades A*- C.• The Advanced Diploma is equivalent to three A Levels.

A Progression Diploma will also be available, which is equivalent to two A Levels. Foundation and Higher Diploma learners can continue with education or take their new skills into employment. They can also study for the next level of Diploma, or take a different type of qualification including GCSEs, A Levels, an Advanced Apprenticeship, a BTEC or an NVQ.

Foundation Degrees, BA (Hons) and PGCE

Students who wish to progress to higher level studies can do so – with us! You can choose from Foundation Degrees, Degrees, Post Graduate Certificates and Masters. Harrogate College Higher Education (HE)courses are designed to improve your career opportunities because our HE qualifications are vocational (work related) and linked to career development routes.

Many of our HE qualifications are delivered through partnerships with local universities, offering the benefits of studying in a supportive environment towards a University Award.

Foundation Degrees are vocational qualifications offering flexible learning opportunities and progression routes to the final year of a Degree. All of the courses are designed to make progression to a Degree more accessible, and to encourage more people to ‘aim higher’ and achieve more.

Claire Adams National Diploma in IT

Claire worked in a supermarket customer services team and wanted to gain some qualifications.

“The best aspect of studying at Harrogate College is gaining self confidence, independence and taking responsibility for your own learning.”

“You can learn at your own pace and the tutors are always on hand to offer support.”

“The highlight of the course is creating graphics and developing my own Website which assisted clients with hardware and software faults based on frequently asked questions.”

“After the course I would like to become a web designer, I enjoy designing websites and working to my own initiative. In the future I would like to run my own website company.”

Paul Dunn BTEC Sport Studies

Paul studied the BTEC Sport Studies course at Harrogate College developing his knowledge through practical exercises.

“The best aspect of studying at Harrogate College was the tutors’ motivation and experience and applying what we learnt into practice.”

Paul completed the course and spent two years applying what he had learnt in the leisure industry before enrolling on a BSc in Health & Sport Studies and progressing on to an MSc in Sport & Exercise Science at University.

Paul became Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for football clubs including: Huddersfield Town, Bradford City and Halifax Town before providing fitness consultancy to the UK polocrosse U21 team and strength and conditioning support for youth tennis players.

Paul developed a social enterprise project linked with a Community engagement scheme ‘Our Community Health’ helping to improve health in local communities to get and stay active to reduce cardiovascular disease in conjunction with government vascular screening.

Paul adds “I never thought that my course at Harrogate College would see me working towards lowering death rates, increasing life expectancy, and improving the quality of life for people in my local community.”

Ashley Wright BTEC National Health and Social Care Year 1

Ashley studied at King James School and wanted to work in the health and social sector after leaving school.

Ashley gained an interest for the profession after hearing about it from his family who work in the sector with his mum and sister both working as Senior Care Officers.

“The best thing about studying at Harrogate College is being treated as an adult, learning in a relaxed environment and making new friends.”

“The most interesting part of the course for me has been learning in a real work environment when I gained the opportunity to work for a home that cared for young adults with learning difficulties, I also really enjoyed learning CPR in first aid training that I can put into practice in my career.”

“After I complete the course I would like to work full-time in the care profession looking after young adults with learning difficulties or study mental health at university.”

Sophie RichardsonNational DiplomaTravel and Tourism

Sophie was studying for her A-Levels before deciding to study at Harrogate College. Sophie enrolled on the Travel and Tourism National Diploma as she wanted to work in the industry gaining the right skills to equip her to pursue her career ambitions.

“The best aspect of studying at Harrogate College is working independently and at your own pace, developing your knowledge and your skills. I really enjoyed our study visits including London and the class role plays giving us a more realistic learning experience and it’s great to be able to apply everything we’ve learnt.”

After completing the course, Sophie is looking forward to studying an International Tourism Management course and working in a hotel chain abroad.

Sarah BellerbyUniformed Public Services

Sarah was studying at St Aidans High School before joining Harrogate College.

Sarah was selected from 900 students to take part in a Greenland exhibition through the Army.

Sarah has been through a rigorous selection process including physical assessments as well as interviews to ensure she is fit for this challenge.

The Greenland expedition includes exploring remote areas, in the North East, called Mesters Vig, also known as the Arctic Riviera. The participants live in a tent for 5 weeks on dehydrated food portions and washing in very, very cold water. The journey includes sleeping on glaciers and crevasse rescue, just to name a few experiences.

After completing the course, Sarah wants to join the Army to go into the Military Police. In the future, she eventually wants to join the civilian police.

What will I learn?This is a full time course aimed at those learners who wish to train for a career in electrical installation and are not yet ready for an apprenticeship programme. The course contains a mix of practical and classroom based work and covers the skills needed to install wiring systems, enclosures and electrical equipment for domestic, and industrial installation. All students will also have regular tutorials and advice about applying for University and new careers. If you successfully complete the programme you will be awarded the Access Diploma, which is a nationally recognised qualification for entry to University courses including Teaching, Social Work, Cultural Studies, Nursing, Midwifery or Physiotherapy.

Access courses offer those individuals without the necessary academic background an opportunity to study for University entry and provide an alternative to more traditional qualifications.

Additional information:The programme is timetabled between 9.30am and 3.00pm each day to allow those that have young children to take full advantage of the provision. The programme is assessed by coursework and end of term exams.

BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care Length of course: 1 year

Entry requirements: You will be required to have two GCSEs at grade D and two at grade E; one must be English or an OCR Level 1 or equivalent at Merit level or above. Mature students may discuss entry requirements with the course leader.

What will I learn?This programme consists of six units of study which are directly related to different aspects of social care.

Access to Higher Education (Humanities and Social Sciences/Nursing and Health) Length of course: 1 year

Entry requirements: There are no formal entry requirements but students will need to have a good standard in literacy if they are to succeed. You will be invited to attend the College for an interview with the Access tutors who will advise you on your choice of subjects and pathway. Prospective students will be required to take an initial assessment in literacy in order to ensure that study at this level is appropriate.

What will I learn?Access courses are designed to equip mature students (age 19+) for entry on to Degree courses in Universities and Colleges and into a range of careers. The courses can be studied during the day over a year (approximately 15 hours per week) or in the evening over two years; three to six hours per week.

The course is organised into two specific pathways: Humanities & Social Science; Nursing, Midwifery & Health Professions.

You will have the opportunity to discuss your programme before the course and choose modules including: • English• Cultural Studies• Psychology and Law (Humanities course)• Chemistry • Human Physiology• Health Communications • English (Nursing course)

Advanced Diploma in Society, Health and Development Length of course: 2 years

Entry requirements: You will need five GCSEs at grade C or higher.

What will I learn?This is a new qualification that focuses on four sectors: • Community Justice • Social Care • Health • Children and Young People

The course consists of principal, additional, specialist, generic and personal learning and thinking skills. All students will complete a project to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired.

What next?Upon completion of the course you will be qualified to pursue a career in any of the four sectors or you may wish to continue your studies at degree level.

Additional information:Diploma students will undertake a minimum of 20 days work experience at Advanced Level. There will be an opportunity to be mentored by professionals working in the chosen area of work. Work experience could also be supplemented with work visits, work related assignments, visits and talks from employers.

Diploma in Childcare and Education - Level 2Length of course: 1 year

Entry requirements: You will be expected to have two GCSEs at grade C or above, including English. Alternatively you may have a Level 1 Foundation Award at Merit level or above.

What will I learn?You will study six compulsory units which include: • An Introduction to working with children • The developing child • Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children • Children and play • Communication and professional skills • The Practitioner in the workplace There will also be an optional unit. The course will integrate Functional Skills in Literacy and Numeracy, together with a tutorial and enrichment programme.

What next?Upon successful completion of the course at Merit level or above you will be eligible to continue your studies at Level 3 or apply for a job as a Nursery Assistant in a school, day nursery, Children’s Centre or Pre-school.

Additional information:This is a one year full-time course which will provide you with a thorough introduction to working with children in a supported learning environment. You will have the opportunity for placements in three different types of Early Years setting. These placements will be organised by the College and you will have tutor support whilst on placement, where you will be expected to complete some coursework.

An enhanced Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check will be carried out on all students applying for this programme, in order to secure a placement. As well as the EDEXCEL Entry Programme, students undertake Basic Skills tests in Literacy and Numeracy and make vocational visits. There is also a weekly tutorial programme for the whole year. You will undertake a structured work experience programme and receive careers guidance regularly. Students also become very involved in community projects and raise money for charity. Work experience and progression is an important part of the programme.

Diploma in Childcare and Education - Level 3Length of course: 2 years

Entry requirements: You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above. One of these must be English Language. Alternatively you may have a Level 2 Diploma in Childcare and Education at Merit level or above.

What will I learn?You will study nine compulsory units which will include: • An introduction to working with children • Development from conception to age 16 years • Supporting children • Keeping children safe • The principles underpinning the role of the practitioner • Promoting a healthy environment for children • Play, learning and education • Caring for children • Development of professional skills (runs throughout the two years)

You will have the opportunity to spend time in Early Years settings on a regular basis and these placements will be organised by the College. Diploma in Health and Fitness Length of course: 1 year

Entry requirements: You will normally have achieved at least four GCSEs, two at grades A-D, or a First Diploma in Sport or equivalent.

What will I learn?All students gain experience through operating the College’s fitness facilities. Study will investigate the skills of gym operation, the structure of training programmes and fitness testing. This is underpinned with the study of the body’s responses to exercise. You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills in the areas of: Communication, Application of Number and IT, together with a tutorial.

What next?At the end of the programme you will receive a Vocational Related Qualification (VRQ) in Health & Fitness and a BTEC National Award in Sport. The course will provide you with a range of industry recognised qualifications and provides Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) points, which provide a direct route into industry.

Alternatively, the A Level equivalence will provide a route into Higher Education through continuing study at Foundation Degree level.

Additional information:The programme is assessed through assignments, case studies, live projects, practical observations and externally set exams.

BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) Length of course: 2 years

Beauty Therapy NVQ 1, 2 & 3 Length of course: 1 year

Entry requirements: No formal qualifications are required for entry at Level 1. Level 2 entry requirements are three GCSEs at Grades A to C in Core subjects. Level 3 requires completed Level 2 Beauty Therapy and an additional formal interview which may involve a practical skills assessment.

What will I learn?The programme is split into both practical and theory elements. You will receive a theory input and practical training followed by the opportunity for assessment where appropriate. Alongside your main programmes of study you will also undertake a tailored programme of additional study that will enhance your skills and improve your employment prospects.

Level 1: This is a five unit award. You will learn how to perform a facial treatment, a manicure and pedicure treatment and assist the therapist in the salon working in a safe environment.

Level 2: This is a nine unit award some of which will be covered in work placement. You will cover all the treatments in beauty including: waxing, manicure, facials, health and safety, make-up, pedicure, eye treatments and reception duties. On completion of Level 2 you will be able to work in the industry as a Beautician. You will also be prepared to undertake additional study at Level 3. Level 3: This is a nine unit award. It will include electrotherapy work on the face and body and holistic treatments such as body massage and holistic therapies. Work placement is essential and will be arranged by the College. For all levels you will have the opportunity to develop your Functional Skills together with tutorials. What next?You may wish to continue your studies by applying for a Higher National Diploma course or Holistic Advanced courses such as Reflexology and Aromatherapy. There are also additional units for Media Make-up at Level 3 available in the evening.

Additional information:Your achievement throughout the programme is continuously assessed in the practical situation at the appropriate time in a realistic working environment. Theory is assessed by means of written tests and assignments. Your portfolio will consist of practical assessments and evidence of underpinning knowledge completed.

Hairdressing NVQ Levels 1, 2 & 3 Length of course: Level 1 is a one year full time course. Level 2 is a two year full time course. Level 3 is completed in up to two years.

Entry requirements: There are no formal entry requirements for Levels 1 & 2 but you will be invited for an interview at the College. Entry to level 2 is not an automatic progression from Level 1 and all learners will be interviewed. Level 3 entry requires achievement of the Level 2 award or equivalent and at least one year’s experience as a stylist in a salon environment.

What will I learn?Levels 1 & 2 are full-time courses. The majority of the time will be spent working in the College salon on clients and practising and perfecting your skills and working towards assessment. Alongside your main programmes of study you will also undertake a tailored programme of additional study that will enhance your skills and improve your employment prospects. You will attend College for three days and have a work placement opportunity within a local salon. Level 3 is a part-time course, details of which can be found in the current part-time prospectus. Level 1: This course is designed for people with little or limited knowledge of the hairdressing industry. It is an ideal introduction into hairdressing, helping you understand how a salon works, and the requirements of the trade in general. Level 2: This is not a natural progression from Level 1, but can in some cases be the starting point for study. The course covers all the basic technical skills required to work within the hairdressing industry. Entry requirements for this programme are for learners who have some knowledge of the hairdressing industry or have suitable life skills to support the requirements of this programme of study, there will also be opportunities for work placement.

NVQ 2 (VRQ Level 2) Hairdressing Length of course: 1 year Entry Requirements: Learners will be assessed on their individual needs prior to acceptance on the course. Learners will be required to have a NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing plus 3 GCSEs at grade F or above, one in English. What will I learn? This course is aimed at learners who have completed their NVQ Level 1 in Hairdressing and offers the opportunity to develop practical skills and underpinning knowledge to prepare learners for the NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing.

This course is designed as a first step into working in the Hairdressing industry. The course is theory based with practical back up. The theory consists of nine written assignments and various written paper based tests for the technical units. During the practical, learners will undertake: • Consultation skills • Shampooing and conditioning the hair • Styling • Hair Cutting • Colouring • Perming • Selling services and products. The practical assessments are aimed at improving consultation and communication skills as well as technical skills. All learners are expected to take responsibility for their own learning.

What next? Learners who successfully complete the course may be able to enrol on the NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing.

What will I learn?The National Diploma in Fashion and Clothing is a well established and popular programme that develops the skills and awareness for a career in this exciting and challenging industry. The course starts with an exciting combined interdisciplinary first year. In the second year assignments reflect the fast moving fashion world and place an emphasis on design and construction. Students will study 18 units which include drawing development and the use of new computer technologies in art and design in addition to more specialist fashion units.

The production of a portfolio to a professional standard is a key theme in preparation for progression. Design tasks aim to keep up with contemporary trends and students have been successful in reaching the finals of national competitions. Students benefit from well planned educational visits and trips and at the end of each academic year there is a celebration of student work in a professional catwalk presentation. It is envisaged that students will engage with real projects as the course progresses, which will sometimes involve work out of College with other organisations. OCN Access Diploma (Art and Design)Length of course: 2 years

Entry requirements: The course is designed for students who will normally have completed a pre-course in which art and/or design skills have been developed. However, learners with a strong interest and evidence of visual skills will be considered.

What will I learn?A two year course designed for students who can only attend College for less than 13.5 hours per week. The course is delivered one day a week and is a recognised pathway on to a Foundation Degree or Degree course. The course is designed for visually aware students with an interest in Art and Design. The course allows the student to develop art and design skills in visual studies and offers the opportunity for individuals to sample specialist areas, for example Fine Art, Textiles, Fashion, Photography and Ceramics.

Students will document their development through an ongoing sketchbook and portfolio of coursework including evidence of written analysis, evaluation and technical notes. In addition, students will be required to complete two written assignments based on contextual and theoretical studies in art and design. The second year of this course encourages an individual and independent approach to study. Students will be encouraged to build a portfolio of work in preparation for progression into higher education.

What next?Students who successfully complete this qualification will be able to apply for a Foundation Degree and BA (Hons) programme at Harrogate College. This qualification is recognised nationally.

What will I learn?You will explore and develop ideas through a broad range of techniques and processes in many subjects including: Fine Art, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Fashion, Textiles, Graphic Communication, Lens Based Media, Electronic Imaging and 3D Design. The College resource areas are well equipped and supported by technical staff, enabling you to take advantage of all the workshops and resource areas during the course. A multi-disciplinary approach to 2D/3D studies allows for resources to be used in combination, reinforcing the integrated nature of the studies. The course is supported by a contextual studies programme dealing with issues key to historical and contemporary art media and design practice. This involves a lecture and seminar programme designed to aid studio practice.

What next?The course has a very high rate of progression into Higher Education, including Foundation Degree and Degree level. Although recognised as an access route and preparation for Higher Education entry, the course also functions as a discrete analytical experience. This enables learners to apply and transfer skills to a wider range of career pathways. Additional information:This course is an exciting, intensive, fast moving programme involving continuous assessment and close working relationships between students and tutors.
