The Harrogate College Library has over 25,000 books, 3,000 e-books,80 journals and e-journals and an extensive range of e-resources tosupport learners.

while you learn, and learn in a way that is best suited to you -through hands-on experience in your place of work. As an

Apprentice you will attend Harrogate College for one day a week toensure practical and underpinning knowledge is gained.

Employers all over the country recognise and value Apprenticeshipsas they show that youve been trained in the skills they need.

Apprenticeships are designed by employers for employers and aretailored to meet the needs of each specific sector. Apprenticeshipscan help you keep pace with the latest techniques and advances intechnology. The programme typically takes between one and fouryears to complete, its length is dependent on the type ofapprenticeship undertaken and its content.

What does it cost to study at Harrogate College?

Full-time education is free to everyone under 19*, parents andguardians will still receive child benefits for full-time learners under 19years old. Learners may be eligible to apply to their Local Education

Authority for a travel pass to help towards the cost of travel to College.

Full-time learners aged 19* and over may be required to pay theirtuition fees additional to the registration and exam fees in line withSkills Funding Agency requirements and the Further EducationFees Policy.

Please contact us if you have any questions about whether you couldqualify for a tuition fee reduction. Some courses may have additionalcosts for materials including books, materials, trips, examination andregistration fees. Tuition fees for work-based programmes arecosted differently.

Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

If you are between 16-18 years old and you areplanning to continue in full-time Further Educationyou may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance

Allowance (EMA).

An EMA is a weekly allowance paid directly into the learners bank account.The actual amount is assessed based on your household income.

Adult Learning Grant (ALG)

If you are 19 years old or over and planning to studyfull-time on a first full Level 2 (five GCSEs or equivalent)or first full Level 3 (two A Levels or equivalent)

qualification you may be eligible for an Adu lt Learning Grant (ALG).

An ALG is a weekly allowance based on the income of the individual ora couple and is paid directly into the learners bank account.

Care to Learn and Childcare Fund

These funds are designed to assist eligible learners with the cost ofchildcare whilst they are attending College.

Childcare

There is a range of childcare providers in the area including daynurseries, out of school clubs and registered childminders. Learners

who are eligible for funding support will need to ensure that the provideris OFSTED registered.

Learner Support Fund

These funds are intended to help eligible learners in difficult financial

circumstances with the cost of attending their course, for examplebooks, materials, travel, examination and/or registration fees.

Harrogate College offers a broad range of qualifications fromPre-Entry to Degree level. The qualifications offered are certified

by nationally recognised awarding bodies.

GCSEs

GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. It's highlyvalued by schools, colleges and employers, so will be useful whateveryou are planning to do afterwards either in your future career or as anentry requirement to higher level study.

The qualification mainly involves studying the theory of a subject,combined with some investigative work. Some subjects also involvepractical work. GCSEs are usually studied full-time at scho ol or college,taking five terms to complete.

NVQs

(NVQs) National Vocational Qualifications offer training in job skillswithin the vocational area of your choice. NVQ programmesconcentrate on the practical skills necessary to perform a particular jobin the workplace.

This training can be carried out either at the workplace or in theCollege. NVQs are designed to be studied at a time scale that suits youand your individual needs. Harrogate College has a substantialemployer network to ensure that the bes t work placement opportunitiesare provided for you.

BTEC Diplomas

Thesequalificationsare available in vocationalrelated subjects.Studentscan study eitherfull-time orpart-time on eitherBTECFirst, oranumberof Subsidiary/Extended courses. Thecourses do havesomeexternal assessment, but they do not have any formal examinations.The BTECcourses provide an academic vocationalqualificationandallowlearnersto specialisein theirchosen careerchoice.

If you are unsure about your career direction, or have not met the entrycriteria for your Level 3 course of choice then Pathways could be thecourse for you.

This flexible full-time programme provides the opportunity to obtainGCSE equivalent qualifications, gain the skills and ex perience yourequire and provides progression to a destination of your choice.

The programme is divided into four distinct sections as detailed below:

Curriculum Experience

This allows you to gain experience within a curriculum area of yourchoice to develop the basic skills required within that vocationalarea(s). This is obtained from working within established groups andutilises evidence for Work Skills unit outcomes.

Work Placement

This section enables you to source a work related placement to gainfurther skills from within your vocational area.

Product

On return from placement, you will then undertake a live brief,

producing a curriculum related outcome. This could be a performance,a product, an artefact or a community event, this maybe crosscurriculum, drawing on the varying strengths of other learners.

Progression

The remaining units will then allow you to focus on gaining progressionto the next appropriate steps for yo u which maybe a full-timeprogramme, an apprenticeship or employment.

Laura chose the NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing

course as she realised she needed the

technical knowledge to effectively

manage her mums salon and handle

problems efficiently.

I find the technical aspects of the course

really interesting.

The best aspect of studying at

Harrogate College is the contact time

with tutors, developing skills and getting

support with all aspects of the course.

The most interesting aspect of the

course is the salon time and the practical

skills developed in the working salon with

real clients.

Laura plans to continue managing her

mums salon as a manager and stylist

after completing the course.

IntroductoryDiploma inVocationalStudies

Arturs and his family moved from Latviashortly after Arturs finished secondaryschool. Arturs choose the course as hissister had studied the course and

recommended it.

I chose the course because it helped

improve my English as its not my first

language. The course allows me to study

English for Speakers of Other Languages

[ESOL] at Entry 3 as well as covering a

range of useful skills.

The best aspect of studying at college is

making new friends and wearing my own

clothes rather than a school uniform.

I enjoy IT and in particular developing

skills in PowerPoint and Excel. The course

also allows me to develop my customer

service skills working in a shop one day aweek.

After the course Arturs wants to

progress onto a First Diploma IT

Practitioners course with the longer

term aim of studying at University to

become an IT Technician.

Studying at college is completely

different to studying drama at school as it

pushed my performance boundaries. The

support from the tutors and students

was excellent.

Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure, includingfunctional skills in English, Maths and ICT Entry level 3, or four GCSEs(grades A-D) including Maths and English. Students must also havea keen interest in sport. A satisfactory reference may also be required.

BTEC Performing Arts (Acting)

First Diploma



Entry Requirements:

Students should have four GCSEs at grade D or a Level 1 IntroductoryDiploma in Performing Arts. Entry onto this course is by auditionand interview.

What will I learn?

The course has an emphasis on workshops and performance basedlearning and includes study in Functional Skills, Literacy andNumeracy to prepare for Level 3 c ourses. Learners will studyMovement and Drama and will learn about the performing artsindustry during the year.

You will participate in live performances with a major public showproduced at the end of year. Performing Arts learners will participate

in all aspects of the production, including movement, voice andacting, to find a particular area of interest to develop further.

On successful completion of the course you can continue your studyand progress onto an Extended Diploma in Performing Arts.

Musical Theatre pathway
