tom penney, a Foundation Fine Art Degree student flew to New York in June for a one-week scholarship on the summer ‘Drawing Marathon’ at the New York Studio School.

The experience is described on The School’s website as a chance to ‘experience the intensity and rigour of the School’s perspective in a condensed manner.’

Tom was offered the placement by New York artist, Fran O’Neill, a tutor at the New York Studio School, who recently had an exhibition of her work at Station Plaza and spent time working with the art and design foundation group.

Tom said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity and I am honoured to have been given the chance to have the experience of a life-time.’

Jeb Haward, course tutor said, ‘this has been an invaluable experience for Tom and we are very grateful to Fran for her support in offering our students this opportunity. It helps them attain real-life experience with real professionals and we are very happy to be able to offer this opportunity to a lucky student next year.’

Physics is crucial to understanding the world around us, inside us and beyond us. Physicists are fascinated by how things work, in every detail and at the deepest level, analysing everything from elementary particles and living cells to solids, liquids, gases, plasmas, complex systems, the human brain, planets, supercomputers, the atmosphere, stars, galaxies and the universe itself.

Physics underpins recent technological developments that have revolutionised our world, such as mobile phones, lasers, the Internet and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

A Level Physics will enable you to study physical theory while remaining mindful of the ‘real-life’ context for each area of study. You will also develop practical and investigative skills, and compare these to how scientists work in current research contexts.

“You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. World development is a multidisciplinary branch of social science which places a particular focus on issues related to social and economic development, and its relevance extends to communities and regions outside of the developing world.

Studying development in a world of economic and political globalisation means looking at more than poverty across the globe. You will gain knowledge and understanding of global issues: climate change, migration, gender relations, access to resources, political development, and the international balance of power.

On this course you can:

• Engage with and evaluate current critical debates

• Study across several disciplines, including economics, human geography, politics and international relations

Construction designs and builds the world – it touches every place and person. Whether it the Taj Mahal, the Shard in London or SCCH buildings, all have left their imprint upon us. Their architects and designers such as Renzio Piano and Norman Foster take a concept and then set the design for construction workers to produce.

It’s a sector that moves at a rapid pace, with new technologies requiring fresh skills. Teaching in SCCH’s Construction Division has been described by Ofsted as ‘inspirational’. Our students enjoy the best facilities in the region, with our Ore Valley campus custom-designed to offer a working environment that mirrors a real construction site. Our staff have all worked in the industry – some still do – so we can provide first-hand knowledge of technical innovations, ensuring our students stay ahead of the game.

rachel Slatter is currently studying on a BtEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business and has found that college life has increased her confidence immensely.

‘Due to the support I’ve been given from each teacher on the course I have completed each assignment to a high standard and have the confidence to attend outside work experiences.

At school my future plans were unclear, but coming to college has steered me towards a bigger and better dream, and I even have an idea of what I want to do. The best thing about SCCH is that it’s nothing like school. It’s a relaxed environment and the teachers are friendly and talkative to each student within the college. I’ve also found that none of the teachers force you to make any decisions you don’t want to, and allow you to create your own path towards your future.’
