President’s Message Christina Lewellen, International President ([email protected])

Recently, I was appointed International President when Sandra Dunlop, a woman who served selflessly in this role for nearly two years, needed to step aside for personal reasons. I'm grateful to follow in Sandra's footsteps and I hope you’ll join me in thanking her for her service. You should know that my brief presidency thus far has been a team effort unlike any other thanks entirely to my talented colleagues serving on the Executive Committee and the International Board of Directors. With Nancy Arkin, Amy Johnson, Anne Leinen, Jeanne O'Connor, Carolyn Pellow, "D" Dyer, and the entire IBOD working as a team, Harmony, Inc. is confidently striding into what’s sure to be an exciting future.

To say that we are thrilled about the upcoming IC&C event in Providence is an understatement. We’re returning to the birthplace of Harmony, Inc., and I can’t think of a more fitting way to launch the next 57 years of our wonderful sisterhood. We look forward to greeting you there, and if you can’t attend this year, be sure to follow all of the action on social media and in future editions of the E-Note. On behalf of the entire Harmony, Inc. leadership, Christina Lewellen International President

Welcome to our NEWEST Chapter! Christina Lewellen, International President ([email protected])

Harmony, Inc. Puts Directors First Christina Lewellen, International President/Anne Leinen, VP Education

Stronger directors = stronger chapters = stronger Areas = stronger Harmony, Inc. Harmony, Inc. members have long known that the strength of our organization rests in the hands of our musical directors. Strong directors contribute to strong chapters, which are the basis for strong Areas and a strong international organization. In a nutshell, Harmony, Inc. understands the importance of putting its “Directors First.” Harmony, Inc. is proud to announce a new fundraising campaign called Directors First. The goal is simple: We want to send one director or musical leader from EACH CHAPTER to Harmony University, a world-class educational experience hosted by the Barbershop Harmony Society, in the next five years. We know we can do it. We know it will expose our directors and musical leaders to a world-class barbershop harmony education, which will trickle down to every set of risers in our organization. Check out this brief overview video to learn more about Directors First or visit the Harmony, Inc. website to review the Directors First page.

Chorus Master Class President Jacquie Jensen, Village Vocal Chords ([email protected])

"Everything You Always Wanted to Know about the VVCs But Were Afraid to Ask" No need to be afraid! As the current and 20-time International Championship Chorus, the Village Vocal Chords will be presenting a class on Saturday morning at IC&C. So if you had 50 minutes to sit with our chorus and learn about how we do things, this is your chance. In fact...we are leaving the topics to be discussed during this class entirely to the Harmony, Inc. membership. So what do you want to know about us? By October 15, send your questions to me ([email protected]) and we'll include them in the class at IC&C. Hope to see you there!

We’re Searching for Volunteers Kath Morgan, Volunteer Manager IC&C ([email protected])

Volunteers are needed still. We still need a few volunteers for a couple of hours Friday and Saturday. Please send me your name, day preference and chapter name. Job descriptions will be in a binder in the Hospitality room as well as a large schedule. Thanks for all that volunteered Please arrive 10-15 minutes BEFORE your assigned time.

IC&C Education – New Tracks, New You! Allison Thompson, Educational Events Coordinator ([email protected])

Once again, you’ll be able to display your “barbersmarts” with pride this year in Providence after

attending the IC&C educational tracks. New this year — educational sessions will run Thursday and

Saturday mornings, so be sure to check the line-up early to make plans for the classes you want to

attend.

World-class coaches and barbershop harmony educators are presenting a wide range of topics in five

easy-to-understand tracks, each featuring a catchy name to capture the essence of that track.

The full class schedule, including course descriptions, is posted on the IC&C 2016 website

Try to attend a class in each track to earn a badge holder ribbon for that track. As you go through the

convention, you’ll be able to quickly identify which fellow attendees participated in which tracks, making it

easy to strike up a conversation about the classes you attended and the things you learned.

Of special note this year is a bonus track called “Share!” We will set up a small room with a series of

questions posted to the wall such as, “Where do you shop?” and “How do you pick music?” You’ll be

able to stop in at your convenience to grab a sticky note and a pen, write your response to the questions,

and post them to the wall. At the conclusion of IC&C, we will gather up all of the responses and put them

in a format for sharing with the Harmony, Inc. membership. We will also host live discussions around

each topic, but space will be limited to the capacity of the room!

Looking forward to seeing you display your “barbersmarts” in Providence!

Convention Corner Jan DelVecchio, Convention Manager ([email protected])

ICC 2016 Providence, Rhode Island

The problem with going on holidays for the last four weeks of summer is that fall seems to sneak up on you when you get home. Only 4 weeks to IC&C and time will fly by! Reminders:

All IC&C forms are now past due. Before the middle of October hotel confirmation numbers will be posted to the website. I will send

out a blast when the information is available. Be sure to check arrival and departure dates! The State of Rhode Island has added a special tax to transportation so the cost of the airport

shuttles has increased by 7%. The revised costs are posted on the IC&C website. Pre-register for IC&C 2017 at the Registration Desk and get reserved seating. Sign the Recording Authorization Form and mail it to John Aviste, videographer, or give it to him

on site. To purchase a DVD for $20, use the same form. Print out the Photo Orders form. Photographer Betsy Groner will be in the Hospitality Room from

4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Wednesday if you’d like to purchase your photos in advance of the contest.

If you are able to volunteer and have not yet contacted our Volunteer Manager, Kath Morgan, please do so ASAP. [email protected]. You could also drop into the Hospitality room and see if anyone is needed to fill a vacancy.

You may not hold seats at the Showcase Dinner; please arrive and locate seats together. Contest Information:

The Contest Stage is 60 x 32 and has a curtain. Chorus contestants will enter stage right and exit stage left; Quartets may enter and exit stage left or right, but not center.

There is a ramp at stage left. There will be 7 sections of 4-step 6 foot risers with a back rail on the stage. The curtain will be open for the Quartet Contests; contestants will stand in the opening. For security reasons we recommend that you not bring items with you backstage. Valuables are

best left in the safe in your room. If you must bring something with you, please limit what you bring to one small handbag.

Contestant Stage Viewing Silver Division Contest stage viewing will take place immediately following the Opening Ceremony

on Wednesday. (approximately 9:00 pm) Maximum 6 people per chorus. As you exit the ballroom, go to your right just past the rest rooms. There will be a volunteer there to assist you.

At 9:00 pm the contestants in the First Quartet Semi-finals Session should line up outside the entrance to the warm up room area. As you exit the ballroom, go to your right just past the rest

rooms. There will be a volunteer there to assist you. At 9:15 these quartets will be walked through the area where the photos and warm up rooms are located on the way to the back stage entrance. Each quartet will have the opportunity to walk onto the stage, pause at the microphones, and exit stage left. We only have about 1 minute per quartet so there will be no singing. Once the first group has entered the back-stage area, the quartets who sing in the Second Quartet Semi-finals Session will line up ready to be escorted into the “pattern” area at approximately 9:45 pm. As time is very limited, we ask for everyone’s cooperation.

Chorus Contest stage viewing will take from 10:00 am to 10:30 am on Thursday. A maximum of 6 people per chorus, please.

Change of Schedule

The time for the Delegates Meeting on Saturday morning has been adjusted to 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in RICC 555A.

Do you have “the eye”? Do you feel naked if you don’t have your camera in hand? Are you dedicated to recording images of every important event in your life?

We need your talent! While the IC&C official photographer is busy taking stage photos and official portraits, we need a roving casual candid photographer to record what’s going on in the rest of the convention – the classes, Sing with the Queens, International Chorus Rehearsal, Minor Chords Rehearsal, Annual Opening Ceremony, and the Medalist Reception, and anything else that catches your artistic eye.

These photos will appear in the next edition of The Key-Note and we’ll be sure to give you photo credit.

Please contact me [email protected] ASAP to volunteer your time and talent.

Contest Efficiency Nancy Arkin, VP Convention & Contests ([email protected])

Most of you have heard that there are 24 choruses and 38 quartets competing at our 2016 IC&C. WOW! How exciting to have such a large group of contestants; it is going to be a fantastic contest. Because of the large field of contestants, we will be watching the clock a bit more closely. No stress, no one is going to be pushing you along. We’re just going to ask for a couple of favors.

As you prepare for contest, we ask that as part of your contest package, you rehearse getting on and off the risers in a timely manner. One suggestion is that you line up to go onstage by riser rows. This will shave off a few minutes; we need to make getting on and off the risers as smooth as possible.

Please do all of your traditions and wishing of good luck to each other in the warm up room. Please do not do hugs and good wishes as you get onstage. These two little items will save us precious minutes that we allow us to keep the contests flowing smoothly.

This is going to be quite the contest! All of you having been working hard to raise your scores and your work has paid off. Congratulations!! We now ask that you add getting on and off the risers to your contest package rehearsal. Thank you, we appreciate your support and cooperation.

Membership Adventures Donna McKay, Director of Membership ([email protected])

In just a few short weeks, we will be together in Providence for our 2016 International Convention and Contests! Are you excited? Over this past year as the Director of Membership, I have been reaching out to as many of you as possible asking why you initially joined and continue to belong to Harmony, Inc. What you have told me is that you belong, not just because you love to sing, but more importantly, because of the friendships, support, camaraderie, sisterhood and the personal growth you have experienced. You’ve also told me that IC&C is less about competing for the highest score and more about doing your best and being proud of your accomplishments. It’s about the lifelong memories you’ve made with your quartet, chapter and Harmony sisters. Let’s look at IC&C as a time to embrace and support each other. Let’s celebrate our accomplishments. Then, let’s go home and spread the word about our wonderful organization so that all women in our communities have a chance to experience the joy that is Harmony, Incorporated! I look forward to seeing you in Providence!

IC&C Competing Choruses and Quartets-Song Information Forms Jacquie Jensen, ICJ Chairman ([email protected])

Competing Quartets: I KNOW you are tweaking several options and trying to decide which songs will be your best choice four weeks from now. I understand that process and know it’s an important decision for you. So…two options…simply wait until you’ve made that decision (hopefully by October 20) OR send me the information on 5 or 6 songs…knowing you’ll sing 4 (thinking positively about making the finals) from that list. Competing Choruses: Let’s be honest here… SURELY you have decided your contest songs by now. After all, contest is just 4 weeks away! Yes...I said it...just 4 weeks away! So, since that is the case, why do I not have your song information forms flowing into my email inbox? Thanks to those who have submitted theirs. For those who have not…I’M WAITING (as is our recording coordinator) as patiently as I can…but why are YOU waiting? Let’s get this done so both you and I can cross it off our “to do” lists! And just a word of caution: If you are singing the same songs that you sang at AC&C, don't assume the copyright holder is the same. It seems that songs are bought and sold between publishers and you really should check on that information again before you submit your form.

Song Registration Erin Cassidy, Copyright & Licensing Coordinator ([email protected])

Competing Choruses and Quartets: The deadline for submitting the Song Registration Form: (HAR-082) is quickly approaching. Forms are found on Harmony’s website in the Members-Only section and are due 2 weeks before contest. Thank you to those who have already submitted your registration forms. Every year this coordinator receives copies of the form from the ICJ Chairman, along with all kinds of questions dealing with copyright information - exact song titles, and how to find all the pertinent information requested on the form. One of the easiest ways to gather info is checking your manuscript of the songs intended for the contest/performance stage. Or you can go to: https://secure.harryfox.com/songfile/public/publicsearch.jsp. This is a public search of the songs on file with Harry Fox Agency. It does not oblige you to buy anything but takes you to the HFA Search page where you enter the correct song title and composer information.

Once you see the correct song (with HFA letter/number identification), click on the title. You will be directed to the song’s current publisher/copyright information. This MAY include a “Copyright Control” statement, which means there are other owners. Just include that on the form, and we will figure it out from there! The following information is needed for each song in your contest set: - Correct song title (correct spelling) - Composer and/or lyricist name(s) – again, with correct spelling. For instance, Gus Kahn and Sammy Cahn - Copyright date (NOTE: if 1922 or prior, song may be in Public Domain. (PD = royalties no longer apply to composers, but do to arrangers) Copyright date may be found on the Internet or may be listed in Variety Music Cavalcade, which lists songs before 1800 up to 1974. - Copyright owner (again, if PD, song’s arranger gets the royalties) NOTE: Copyright ownership is a “slippery slope,” and changes with regularity—what is true one year may NOT be true the following year OR copyright may be held by joint owners! Thank you for “keeping it legal!”

CHECK IT OUT! Roxanne Powell, Director of Communications ([email protected])

Did you miss it? At the mid-year meeting of the International Board of Directors, the Board authorized expanding the coverage of The Key-Note from an annual yearbook of IC&C to a semi-annual publication with the summer issue dedicated to news from all Areas, Chapters, and Quartets.

The NEW Summer 2016 issue of The Key-Note is now posted on the Harmony, Inc. website. Full of pictures and stories from Harmony quartets and choruses, reports from all six Areas and the

International Board of Directors as well as important information about upcoming events, you owe it to yourself to see the exciting news about your sisters in song.

Thrill to the stories of our 2015 Harmony Queens, LiveWire. View exciting action shots from the Area Conventions. Learn about the educational opportunities at Harmony, Inc. conventions. Discover new ideas in teaching and coaching singing and performance skills. Most of all, revel in this account of what’s been going on this year in the Harmony universe. We’re Harmony, We’re Strong!

The document is intended as an electronic publication. The Key-Note is now formatted to fit laptop and tablet screens, so it is best viewed online. Publishing online – pixels are free! – we were able to use much brighter, contrasting colors, and many, many more photos – which would have been cost prohibitive if we had to pay for paper and ink.

However, those wishing to print hard copies may download a high-resolution version of the document at http://www.harmonymembers.org/docs/misc/KeynoteSummer2016HighRes.pdf

This document is best printed on legal-size (8.5x14 in.) paper in landscape orientation with “scale to fit” checked in the dialog box. Contact Editor Sara Wood – [email protected] – with questions.

Association of Harmony Queens Travel Fund Judi Johnston, Travel Fund Chairman ([email protected])

The Harmony Queens Travel Fund is available to help your chapter bring a championship Harmony Queens quartet to headline your chapter show. Funding for actual travel expense (mileage, airfare, airport parking etc.) and accommodation to a maximum of $2,000 U.S. is available on a first-come, first-served basis by making application in advance. Details and the application can be found on the Harmony website at www.harmonyinc.org. The Travel Fund will also cover up to $500/year per Area to bring an active Queen’s quartet to your Area educational event or AC&C Education program. All four members of the quartet must participate in the coaching/facilitating aspect and the Area Director must approve the application. These funds are also allocated on a first-come first served basis.
