Upgraded Facility ProvidesGreater Capacity withinSame FootprintWhen a Middle Eastern plant wasinterested in increasing its processproduction, Hamon Deltak completedan engineering analysis project, whichdetermined that the existing 20-year-oldboiler design was insufficient for thedesired process conditions. We designedand fabricated a new boiler to fit withintight physical constraints, yet meet theincreased process conditions whileminimizing the impact on the rest of theclient’s process.

Economizer Re-designed to Stop LeaksHamon Deltak was asked to provide a complete HRSG inspectionduring a scheduled outage at a cogen facility. One of the issues foundin the inspection was repeated Economizer tube leaks, which causedunscheduled outages every other month. HDI provided a full inspec-tion report with itemized suggestions for immediate actions, actions toplan for the next outage, items to address when convenient and itemsto monitor. The following year, a plan was developed for replacing theEconomizer panels with an improved design. HDI then replaced the upperreturn-bend Economizer bundle with a multiple panel design that isfully ventable. This design change required that the panel support sys-tem and piping be retrofit. HDI provided engineering, fabrication, lo-gistics and a site Technical Advisor for demolition and installation ofthe panels, piping, support systems and internal HRSG components.Hamon Deltak supplied a lifting and turning flame for handling the panels and provided a rigging procedure to maneuver the panels intotheir final positions. There hasn’t been a tube leak since the retrofit.
New SuperheaterCoil & Casing Designedfor Quick Installation
Hamon Deltak supplied a replacementsuperheater coil and corresponding roof casingto a refinery. The coil and roof casing were shop assembled tolimit field assembly, and allow the client to quickly “gut and stuff”the existing equipment. Tube skin thermocouples were providedin new locations to give the plant operators better informationacross various areas of the coil.
Improved Startup Procedures Developed forCogen FacilityHamon Deltak aided a cogeneration plant with issues trippingthe system on high steam temperatures during startup. We senta Field Engineer to observe startup operations, correct riskybehaviors and make recommendations. Our Engineers thenanalyzed the field data to determine acceptable startup limitsand a procedure to reduce the likelihood of plant trips.

New Convection Section/ EconomizerGreatly Reduces FoulingHamon Deltak was approached to help develop a solution to agas-side fouling issue in an existing Waste Heat Boiler at a refinery.After a detailed engineering analysis and site visit to discuss plantneeds and desired process and maintenance requirements, HDIwas selected to design, fabricate and handle freight logistics for aWaste Heat Boiler Convection Section and Economizer Module.The original Convection Section tube and fin design was retrofitwith a new design to minimize gas-side corrosion slag build-up andmake cleaning easier. The Economizer heat transfer surface wasreplaced in-kind, but the internal floor was redesigned to aid in offlinecleaning and minimize corrosion on the drain piping. Additionally,the sidewall casings were designed to be removed for enhancedinspection and maintenance access.
Low Emissions Retrofit of SCR Made WithoutMissing a Beat During RepowerHamon Deltak planned a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)installation as well as designed its upgrade to permit a new gasturbine to be installed while the old turbine stayed on-line. Priorto modifying this SCR to achieve strict NOx and NH3 emissions,we performed CFD Flow Modeling to determineoptimum flow correction, pressure loss andcatalyst performance. The upgrademaximizes the use of existing auxiliaryequipment, while minimizingoff-line interruption.
