What should we learn from the story of the rich man and Lazarus ?
Read the message of Pope Francis on page 7.
Usually Jesus’ parable is titled, “Lazarus and the Rich Man.” However, when you really understand and ap-
preciate what Jesus is teaching in this parable, the title could be, “Lazarus and the Poor Man.”

Statement by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on the Implementation of the Cannabis Act
Canada’s new legislation on the rec-reational use and sales of cannabis (marijuana) comes into effect today with the implementation of the Can-nabis Act (formerly Bill C-45) at the federal level. At the same time, provinces, territories, and munici-palities are working on their own regulations and schedules to govern the drug’s accessibility across the country. The Catholic Church for its part continues to underline the ethi-
cal problems involved with the recreational use and abuse of this drug: the negative risks that impact on psychological and physical health, the growing problems of a society more and more dependent on drugs and alcohol, the possibility of brain damage espe-cially to those under the age of 25, the negative repercussions on families and local com-munities, and unfortunately the willingness of businesses and governments to exploit the drug for commercial interests and as a source of tax revenue, thereby even further jeopardizing the pursuit of the common good. This coming 29 November to 1 December 2018, the Holy See’s Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development is hosting an international conference on “Drugs and Addictions: An Obstacle to Integral Human De-velopment”. Quoting Pope Francis, the concept note for the conference refers to addic-tive drugs as “a worrisome problem in the world today” which is “fuelled – not without concessions and compromises on the part of institutions – by ‘a shameful market that crosses national and continental borders’, intertwined with organized crime groups and drug trafficking.” The “scourge of drug-trafficking” favours violence and sows the seeds of suffering and death, Pope Francis has noted several times, to which the response of society should be acts of courage and the resolve to fight against all narcotics.
Lionel Gendron, P.S.S. Bishop of Saint-Jean-Longueuil President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

UCWLC News: Glory be to Jesus Christ!
Please note the following change for the winter months. We will continue to have the UCWLC meeting on the second Wednesday of the month but have changed the TIME ONLY of our meetings to 12 noon. Father Ihor will have Divine Liturgy at 11:00 am and our meeting will follow at noon. Our next UCWLC meeting will be held on Nov. 14th. In Christ, Gwen Dankewich
From POPE FRANCIS GENERAL AUDIENCE Dear Brothers and Sisters. I should like to pause with you today on the parable of the rich man and the poor Lazarus. The lives of these two people seem to run on parallel tracks: their life status is opposite and not at all connected. The gate of the rich man’s house is always closed to the poor man, who lies outside it, seeking to eat the leftovers from the rich man’s table. The rich man is dressed in fine clothes, while Lazarus is cov-ered with sores; the rich man feasts sumptuously every day, while Lazarus starves. Only the dogs take care of him, and they come to lick his wounds. This scene recalls the harsh reprimand of the Son of Man at the Last Judgement: “I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was […] naked and you did not clothe me” (Mt 25:42-43). Lazarus is a good example of the silent cry of the poor throughout the ages and the contradictions of a world in which immense wealth and resources are in the the hands of the few. Jesus says that one day that rich man died: the poor and the rich die, they have the same destiny, like all of us, there are no exceptions to this. Thus, that man turned to
Abraham, imploring him in the name of ‘father’ (vv. 24, 27). Thereby claiming to be his son, belonging to the People of God. Yet in life he showed no consideration toward God. Instead he made himself the centre of all things, closed inside his world of luxury and wastefulness. In excluding Lazarus, he did not take into consideration the Lord nor his law. To ignore a poor man is to scorn God! We must learn this well: to ignore the poor is to scorn God. There is a detail in the parable that is
worth noting: the rich man has no name, but only an adjective: ‘the rich man’; while the name of the poor man is repeated five times, and ‘Lazarus’ means ‘God helps’. Lazarus, who is lying at the gate, is a living reminder to the rich man to remember God, but the rich man does not receive that reminder. Hence, he will be condemned not because of his wealth, but for being incapable of feeling compassion for Lazarus and for not coming to his aid. ww.humanthreadcampaign.org/blog/pope-francis-on-the-rich-man-and-poor-lazarus/
We must learn
this well: to ig-
nore the poor is
to scorn God.

KNIGHTS of COLUMBUS Perogy week— Potato peeling Monday starting at 2 pm, perogy mak-ing Wednesday 9:00am, we require a lot of help as Christmas orders are starting to come in, taking the words from the late U.S President John Kennedy, with a slight change “Ask not what your parish can do for you, rather ask what can I do for my parish”?, The perogy supper
is on Friday, October 26.
Coffee House today after liturgy, come on down and meet with your fellow parish-ioners, over a cup of delicious St. Basil’s coffee

Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child distributes shoeboxes to children all over the world, bringing hope, comfort and the Good News of Jesus Christ. Once again, our parish is collecting items for Christmas Shoeboxes going to children in Ukraine. Donations must be small enough to fit in a regular-sized shoebox: a small “wow” toy, school supplies, small books, hygiene items, gloves, toques, scarves, slippers and socks. We cannot accept toothpaste, playdoh, liquid, gels, candy, glue, playing cards or any war-themed toys.
The students and teachers of our catechism program will pack and deliver the boxes on November 18th,
so donations must be placed in the specially-marked collection box in the church before then. Monetary donations are also accepted, as we will shop for items to balance each gift box. We thank our UCWL, who generously continue to pay the $10 fee per box, which goes towards shipping and religious materi-als for children in Ukraine. This is our opportunity to spread God's love across the miles and to offer prayers of peace. Thank you and bless you for giving.
Winter Clothing Drive As the weather chills, the need for warm outdoor clothing increases. There are many in our city without proper winter wear. At the back of the church is a box labelled "Winter Clothing Collection". Please bring whatever winter items you can spare - boots, mitts, gloves, hats, snow pants, jackets/coats and scarves. Clothing donations (for chil-dren and adults) will be collected from now until February, and will be divided between the Main Street Project and Siloam Mission. Please let your children be involved in the collecting of donated items from
home, as this is an important lesson in giving to those less fortunate. Thank you. Wanda Prychitko, Catechetical Program
