FROM THE PASTOR…

Dear Parishioners, It’s funny how, after an event like last Tuesday’s late-winter blast, parishioners always inquire how many (if any) showed up for the 9 am Mass that morning. The answer, this time, was four: the two Korean Sisters, Angelina Munoz and Terence Picardo. In addition, Richard O’Connor drove in to open the church, while Jim Buck-ley was stranded in Greenpoint. Last weekend, we began the promotion of the Annual Catholic Appeal for 2017. The theme of the Appeal this time (“Live in Faith-Give in Love”) reminds me of the words of Pope Francis in an interview he recently gave to an Italian publication. The Pope said that giving to someone in need is “always right”. We need to look be-yond the necessary institutional aspects of the Appeal, and appreciate its practical and personal aspects. We need to view the ultimate recipients of our generosity as persons with human dignity, looking into their eyes and touching their hands—these are real human lives with value equal to our own. In this spirit, I ask you not to ignore the Annual Catholic Appeal. We obvi-ously need to raise our assigned parish goal of $37,183, but we also need to under-stand the Appeal as an opportunity to radiate the love of Christ in our city, especially towards the aged, the infirm, the disadvantaged and the needy. Next weekend is Commitment Sunday. If you have already received the infor-mation in the mail and have responded, I deeply appreciate your goodness. If you have not yet carried your share in this parish effort, I ask you, this week, to prayerfully consider your participation and come to church next weekend ready to partner with us in making your pledge or gift. A wise Christian once said, “Jesus doesn’t like to add or subtract. He loves to multiply. Count your blessings when you give with gratitude and reach out to the less fortunate.” Thank you. -Father Jerry Jecewiz
