PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEWelcome to the twenty-sixth consecutive Fall Field Con-

ference of the New Mexico Geological Society! The pervasiveSilver Anniversary spirit of 1974 did not wane. Thanks to theefforts of individuals dedicated to the betterment of the geo-logical profession in New Mexico through the Society, therecord accomplishments of last year have been surpassed. These achievements did not just happen. They were broughtabout by hard work and fruition of ideas by many energeticpersons. Most of these are listed on the following pages underthe committees.

In May, the New Mexico and Arizona Geological Societies co-sponsored a Symposium on Base Metal and Precious MetalDistricts of New Mexico and Arizona in Silver City. Co-chair-men Chuck Chapin (N.M.G.S.) and Jim Sell (A.G.S.) puttogether a superb program attended by more than 400geologists. They were ably assisted by Jim Robertson(Registration), Jack Cunningham (Local Arrangements),and many other members from New Mexico Bureau ofMines and Mineral Resources, Western New MexicoUniversity, and the Arizona Geological Society. Abstracts ofpapers presented at the symposium, and highlights ofthe 1-day field trip that followed, are printed in thisguidebook.

Continued efforts of the Publications and Sales Committee, under the guidance of Chuck Chapin and George Austin, havemaintained guidebook sales at a record pace. Sales averagedabout $3500/month through June. This sales volume depletedthe stock of some guidebooks but provided capital to reprintsix guidebooks. The "sales-reprinting-sales treadmill" nowappears to be going full speed and six more guidebooks willneed reprinting in 1976 to keep full sets in print. TheExecutive and Publications-Sales Committees will be givingmuch consideration toward possibly letting some of the olderguidebooks go "out of print" as they are duplicated whollyor in part by future conferences.

The size and quality of this guidebook would not have beenpossible without the support of our advertisers. A super effortby this year's Advertising Committee, guided by Stan Harrisonand Bill Hiss, brought in over $12,000 in income which

doubled last year's record high. In addition to the advertise-ments herein, American Smelting and Refining Co., Mobil OilCorp., Occidental Minerals, Tucson Gas and Electric Co., andJohn West Engineering Co., contributed donations.

Membership in the New Mexico Geological Society nowtotals more than 800, an increase of about 300 over last year'srecord high. To Jon Callender and Anne Loring, into whosecapable hands and sagacious heads fell the tasks and worries ofmaintaining the Society's books and financial records, I extendmy thanks.

The success of any conference lies mainly with its chairman. We are fortunate this year to have Bill King at this post. Hisexperience and consideration of detail have made this year'sconference another milestone in the Society's history. Appre-ciation is also extended to John Hawley who spent long hourspreparing the road logs. The editors wish to thank Chas. B.Hunt who prepared the sketch for the guidebook cover. Allthese persons deserve special thanks and congratulations on ajob well done.

The foundation of the New Mexico Geological Society'scontinued success stands on the unceasing support of the NewMexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources (Frank E.Kottlowski, Director) and the U.S. Geological Survey (WilliamE. Hale, District Chief, WRD). The directors and supervisors ofthese organizations, as well as those of the Geology Depart-ments of the State Universities, State Highway Department,State Engineers Office, and many energy and mineral industrycompanies, have generously made available a vast store of pro-fessional, technical, and secretarial services. Sincere thanks arehereby extended to all these individuals and their staffs fortheir genuine interest in the welfare of the State throughdevelopment of its energy and mineral resources.

On behalf of the Executive Committee and all the standingand organizing committees I hope you have a pleasant, instruc-tive, and memorable stay in "Las Cruces Country."

Russell E. Clemons
