Notes from the Vice President Have you remembered to keep up with the challenge? Find the “word” that doesn’t belong in the newsletter. Come to the guild meeting and enter your name and the “word” in my challenge box. Last month’s winner won a prize valued at $28. Search for the word in this newsletter and come to the next guild meeting. Surprise, you can be the winner. Help me win the battle to increase our attendance. I promised to give you a quilting tip each month. My favorite has always been “ You don’t have to like the color, but the quilt does!” This one comes from my very first class instructor who helped me with my sampler quilt. I had chosen a focus fabric with lots of colors. I HATE orange. You guessed it, that’s where the quote happened as she told me the quilt needed some orange. Remember that as you choose your accent fabrics. Happy quilting.

Community Cupboard We received many great donations this past month. Linus gave us boxes of "adult" fabrics. Patti Levine also donated fabric and many books. Bert Sevey donated some beautiful quilt tops, which will be made up as raffle quilts for the community. Sara Orton brought in quilt tops which will be used in the St. Andrew’s Hospitality House in Las Cruces. Libby Pruett quilted these with a lovely leaf motif. We have requests from 3 local groups for a total of 36 lap quilts during the holidays. Many of these are finished and others are being quilted. Patti Levine's group has taken several to bind for us. The Cowboys for Cancer Research Auction is coming up on Oct. 7th. We have supplied them with many quilts and wall hang-ings for the event. Erma Giron turned in a fabulous appliqued boot wall hanging and Joyce Drake donated a cute cowboy quilt. Erma has also begun a sewing group at the Dona Ana community center which she is mentoring. The ladies are learning a vari-ety of skills including quilting. Cheryl Price, Community Cupboard Chair

Project Linus What is your favorite part of quilting? The answer of one quilter always makes me smile – her favorite part was “putting in the very last stitch on the label.” Whether your favorite part, like hers, is finishing a project, or starting a new one, or something (or maybe everything!) in between, there is a place for you as a Project Linus volunteer! One of the wonderful sassafras things about our local Linus chapter is the “production line” aspect of quilt making. The number of people who can be involved in one quilt is amazing – one who donates the fabric, one who sorts the fabric, one to cut, one to sew, one to quilt, another to bind, yet another to sew on the Linus label, and still others who sort the quilts to go to the agencies who distribute them, and one more who delivers to those agencies. Whew! Krys Swirydczuk’s favorite part has to be the quilting. This summer she quilted her 1500th quilt for Linus! Wow! Others may not have kept track of how many bindings or labels they have sewn on, or the number of tops they have pieced, but the quilts often pass through many hands before they reach the children in need. So whether or not you have the time to make a complete quilt, or if there are aspects of quilt making that you really enjoy, Pro-ject Linus can use your time and talents. Join us on the third Wednesday of each month – the next meeting will be October 19, 9:00-1:00 in the community room at Good Samaritan’s. If you have questions, contact chapter coordinator Suzi Stoltzfus, [email protected] 526-3695 or Anita Himes, [email protected], 522-1034.
