If you thought Januarywas a bit hotter than nor-mal, you were right. Figuresobtained from the Bureau ofMeteorology have confirmedthat January 2019 was thehottest on record.

Maximum temperaturesfor the month averaged28.7C, making it Guyra’shottest January and hottestmonth on record from 85years of available tempera-ture records.

The unusually hot condi-tions were caused by lowpressure troughs lingeringover western New SouthWales for most of the monthdrawing hot air into thestate from central Australia.

The previous hottestmonth was January 1929when temperatures reachedor exceeded 28.0C on 19days, and reached or ex-ceeded 30.0C on seven days.

January 1939 was also ex-tremely warm with a run ofvery high maximum temper-atures recorded in Guyra, in-cluding the highest

maximum on record whichwas 37.8C on January 15th.

In more recent times, Jan-uary 2017 was also hotterthan average with a new

Landcare coordinators locked inLandcare groups across the Northern Tablelands

will benefit from a $22.4 million boost to expand thepopular and effective Local Landcare Co-ordinatorInitiative.

The Local Landcare Co-ordinator Initiative is ahighly successful program, bringing together volun-teer Landcare groups to deliver better results forlandholders, local communities and the environment.

These people, many of whom are farmers in theregion, are out there on the ground, getting theirhands dirty and taking practical steps to improve theenvironment for all of us. While Landcare reliesheavily on the generosity of volunteers, it can’t function effectively without dedicated staff runningthe day-to-day operations.

This announcement includes almost $5 million tosupport Landcare NSW’s ongoing sustainability andoversight of the program, ensuring that 60 LocalLandcare Co-ordinators, like Sara Schmude in Armidale, can continue their valuable work.

This funding will also allow for an expansion of thescheme, with the introduction of 11 new regional co-ordinators. Landcare NSW has over 60,000members and 3,000 groups, providing a massivegrass-roots movement, which helps to manage ournatural resources.

Active and Creative Kids ProgramsThe $100 Active and Creative kids programs are up

and running for another year. These programs providea $100 voucher for parents to use on school children fora range of creative and sporting activities.

Each child is eligible for one $100 voucher in each ofthe Active and Creative Kids programs each calendaryear. This program was designed to help reduce the costof kids being active and involved in many activities.

So far around the state more than 1 million Active andCreative Kids vouchers have been downloaded sincethey first went live, and I want to make sure local parentsaren’t missing out.

Kids should have every opportunity and we want tomake sure that their after school activities aren’t puttinga financial strain on the parents.

Council News

COUNCIL MEETINGThe next Ordinary Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday 27 February 2019 at the Guyra Council Chambers, 158 Bradley St, from 4pm.Public welcome to attend.

Mayor’s MessageCommunications between Council and the region’s Aboriginal communities have entered a new chapter, with the first meetings of an expanded advisory group. The Guyra, Tingha and Armidale communities now have their own committees as part of the Armidale Region Aboriginal Advisory Committee, and each of them met last week to start discussing their local issues.

NAIDOC Week celebrations, connections between the district’s Aboriginal and Yazidi residents and the unmarked graves of local Aboriginal people were among the key topics raised during the inaugural meetings of the town subcommittees.

Each of the recommendations at those local meetings will now go to a regional forum in February, where delegates from each subcommittee will consider the ideas for presentation to Council.

The maiden meetings were an exciting step in ensuring an effective flow of information between Council and Aboriginal residents – enabling communities to discuss and analyse issues at a local level while encouraging a regional voice as well.

Council worked closely with the community last year to develop the new structure and best represent all of the amalgamated Armidale Regional Council area, building upon the previous Armidale-based Gayinyaga Aboriginal Advisory Committee.

Attendances at last week’s opening round of gatherings was encouraging but Council, led by our Aboriginal Community Development

Officer, Lisa Waters, is keen to see even greater levels of community involvement.

The advisory group is a great opportunity for Aboriginal residents to take their concerns direct to Council.

It will also work with the Aboriginal Community Development Officer to identify and pursue events and other initiatives to celebrate culture and generally strengthen the community. It complements the very active interagency forums that bring together organisations that provide services to local Aboriginal people.

Like the wider Armidale regional community, the Aboriginal communities in the Guyra, Tingha and Armidale district have quite different characteristics. It’s likely, therefore, the objectives and priorities of the subcommittees could also be distinctly different, as they seek to address the challenges and capitalise on their strengths of their own communities.

It’s also important that the regional forums will bring together these communities on issues that benefit from a united approach.

The next round of local subcommittees will be held in March and all interested people are invited to attend. See the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People page on www.armidaleregional.nsw.gov.au for dates and venues.

Celebrate Seniors WeekThe art of healthy ageing will be celebrated with a number of Council-supported Seniors Week activities in the region.

Guyra’s L.T. Starr Memorial Library and Armidale Regional War Memorial Library will host an Art of Ageing exhibition from 13 – 24 February. The digital exhibition features images that challenge preconceptions of older people and tells compelling personal stories.

The 2019 Seniors Week Awards ceremony at Armidale City Bowling Club on Wednesday 13 February from 10am will feature morning tea and entertainment by Massiel, Peter & Friends.

Guyra Bowling Club will host an entertainment day on the same day at 10.30am to 2pm, including morning tea and entertainment by Peter Denovan and the Guyra Preschool and Long Day Care Centre. Bookings are essential by phoning 6770 7127.

Sport council nominationsArmidale region residents with a commitment, vision and passion for sport are invited to submit expressions of interest to join an expanded peak sporting body for the region.

Additional members are sought for the new Armidale Regional Sports Council Advisory Committee, with a particular push for Guyra delegates. Nominations are open for past and present competitors and officials and anyone else with an interest in the promotion of local sport.

The regional group replaces two subcommittees for the Armidale and Guyra districts, with some subcommittee members continuing their involvement. The sports councils were established in the 1990s to improve facilities and opportunities for local sportspeople and clubs.

Initiatives to foster local sport include the annual New England Sports Awards and grants for athletes chosen for national and State representative duties.

The regional group’s executive will comprise six community representatives, two youth representatives aged 24 or under and two councillors. Councillors Jon Galletly and Brad Widders have been appointed to join retained executive members Steve McMillan, Mike Porter and Jason Campbell.

There is an emphasis on filling a number of the remaining positions with Guyra residents,

so they might comprise around half of the total positions.

Interested people are invited to forward an expression of interest by Friday 1 March to [email protected].

Grants for athletesTalented athletes from the Armidale region can receive financial assistance to contest high-profile events. Competitors set to represent NSW or Australia between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020 are invited to apply for this year’s round of Armidale Regional Sports small grants.

Athletes representing Australia are eligible for a small grant of $500, while $250 grants are available for selected athletes competing for NSW. The money can be spent on anything related to the competition, including travel, accommodation and registration fees.

Athletes must be aged between 10 and 35 and reside in the Armidale Regional Council area. Successful applicants can only receive one small grant per financial year.

For more information and application requests, contact Sports Coordinator Amy Biggs at [email protected] or on 6770 3869.

January 31st - There was an in-crease in numbers, with large num-bers of yearlings, parcularly heiferspenned. Vealers normally held forlonger were also in fair supply. Therewere forced selloffs in the yearlings, with both property sale and a lack offeed cited as reasons. There werelimited supplies of well finished caleand they were mainly cows. Overall, the quality of the offering showed agreat variaon, while the condionof the young cale was on the leanside. The usual buyers aended andthere was increased restocker andfeedlot compeon.

Market trends varied through theyoung cale. A number of factors af-fected price change, namely quality, breed and the ability to procurestraight lines of well bred cale. Lightweight steer vealers to restockerssold to cheaper trends where breedwas a factor. The heavier weightsteers to restockers saw a significant

price improvement, with quality andbreed influencing that change. In-creased compeon saw the heifervealers to the paddock sell firm todearer, those to the trade sold to acheaper trend. Quality and breedwere factors in price change for year-ling steers to restock and feed in amarket trend that otherwise saw lit-tle change. There were premiums forstraight lines over mixed breed pens.Very strong restocker demand and in-creased feeder compeon sawyearling heifers in all weight classessell to dearer trends of 6c to 30c/kg.The restocker heifers and light weightfeeders experienced the best of theprice change.

The few well finished heavy grownsteers to processors sold on a firm tocheaper market trend. There was fur-ther improvement in the cow market,up 10c to 12c/kg, with an improve-ment in quality in some cases. Heavybulls sold to a dearer trend.

January 30th - Lamb num-bers increased, while thesheep yarding held steady. There was a good quality pen-ning of new season lambs, while old lambs were limited insupply. The majority of theyoung lambs were in goodenough condion to suit bothdomesc and export markets. There were limited numbers to

suit restockers. Merino lambswere also in reduced numbers. The usual processors were inaendance, while there wasreduced compeon from re-stockers in both the sheep andlamb markets.

There were varying trendsthrough the lamb market, withquality variaons affecngsome price change. Well fin-

ished young lambs to both do-mesc and export markets soldto dearer trends. The lighterweight 3 score trade lambswere up to $9/head dearer.

The heavier weights to bothdesnaons were also dearer.Young crossbred lambs to re-stockers sold to cheapertrends, with the overall qualitybelow that of the previous

week. Restocker Merino lambssold to cheaper trends, withthose to processors also show-ing a small change.

The reduced restocker com-peon had lile effect on themarket for light weight Merinoewes. Medium and heavyweight sheep to processorssold on a firm to dearer markettrend.

February 1st - It was avery stable week for theAustralian wool marketwith the Eastern MarketIndicator connuing itsgradual run up post re-cess. Some small pocketsof weakness were evidentespecially part tender, higher vegetable maertypes.

The Crossbred sectorwas the standout per-former with the 28 micronindicator almost 10%dearer for the week.38,830 bales were sold na-onally with a passed inrate of 7.2%. Major buyersincluded Seatech, Tech-wool and PJ Morris. Whenlooked at in US dollars themarket jumped 32 centsas the Aussie dollar gained

almost 1.5 cents againstthe US dollar during theweek.

Saturday morning  saw the Guyraunder 12 cricket team meet Walcha halfway in Armidale. Captain for the matchwas Brendon Landsborough. The boyswere keen to get started after nearly twomonths off for the school holidays.

Guyra batted first with Jared Frostand Tom Lockyer taking to the crease.Jared was Guyra’s top scorer on 35 notout, also not out was Brendon Landsbor-ough on 18 and Aidan Brown on7.  Tynan Bull 16, Angus Dullaway 15and Cameron Frost 9 provided muchneeded runs to bring Guyra’s inningstotal to 6/144.

Unfortunately for Walcha they were acouple of players down, however thisdidn’t dampen their enthusiasm orsportsmanship. Brendon Landsboroughshowed his skill as a bowler collectingtwo wickets. Brendon also took a greatcatch from a Tom Lockyer delivery.

Jack Soraghan showed outstandingfielding as he chased down balls andsaved boundaries. Jack sent two Walchaplayers back to the sideline with a greatcaught/bowled and a run out. JaredFrost was also successful in getting arun out.

Tynan Bull’s fielding was on point, saving numerous boundaries and nar-rowly missing a catch. Lincoln Brown

continues to be a solid and consistentbowler keeping the opposition’s run ratedown.

Walcha finished their innings on 6/75.

The boys were happy to get the win.Guyra will travel back to Armidale toplay Ex Services at Newling Oval thisSaturday.

The under 14s were also more thanhappy to get the win. Playing on theirhome ground at the Sporting Complexthey got off to shaky start losing theirfirst wicket with just 3 on the scorecard.

This could have been a bad omen, how-ever it brought Brodi Campbell in to joinopener Josh Bell. The pair must havehad some practice over the holidays asthey were in fine form.

A partnership of 113 for the secondwicket steered Guyra to a solid total of5/142 off their allocated overs. Josh hithis way to 41 before being bowled, whileBrodi retired at 50 not out. AndrewPearson also chipped in with a handy 17not out.

In reply Hillgrove managed to bat outtheir overs but fell short in the runchase, thanks to some handy bowlingand good fielding from the Guyra boys.

They finished 8 down for 111, losingtheir opener to a runout and withMalekai Landsborough (2 for 1) and TyMulligan (2 for 22) the best of thebowlers. Brodi Campbell, Harrison Bra-zier, andJosh Bell got a wicket each.

Next week the 14s will take on Hill-grove Brumbies at Newling in Armidale.
