Christmas came to Guyra on theweekend and the town has takenon a festive look.

Families joined in the fun with aspecial event organized by Armi-dale Regional Council, which in-cluded the turning on of theChristmas Tree lights at the Recre-ation ground.

Member for Northern Table-lands Adam Marshall flicked theswitch on the 5 metre tall tree infront of a large crowd who turnedup for the event.

Many stayed on to watch a spe-cial outdoor screening of “TheFlight before Christmas.

The focus turned to the Show-ground on Sunday with the RotaryClub staging their annual Christ-mas Carnival.

Under sunny skies the hamwheels were turning and stallhold-ers were kept busy as the crowdsrolled in.

Although the parade was smallerthan usual, it was still a delight towatch.

An initiative of Guyra AdultLearning Association Inc., thelaunch of a community basednewsletter is looking to share newsand views from within the commu-nity.

Dorothy Lockyer said that shehopes that the community will sup-port the newsletter and encouragescommunity and sporting groups tobecome invloved.

“The newsletter is a way of connecting the wider community,sharing the day to day happenings,”Dorothy said. “It’s about giving thecommunity a voice, allowing localgroups and businesses to spead theword about some of the greatthings that are happening aroundtown.”

“This is the first edition, but itwon’t be the last,” she said. “Wewelcome feedback so call in andtell us what you think.”

Combined Churches ChoirThis year the Combined Churches Choir will not be singing a cantata in

Guyra, but will be singing several carols at the Ben Lomond Hall on Mon-day, 19th December, at 7.30pm.We will practise at The Catholic Parochial Hall on Friday, 16th Decemberand Sunday, 18th December at 7pm.

Guyra Preschool and Long Day Care Centreheld its annual Preschool Graduation on Fri-day 25th November.

This year the graduation was held at theGuyra Bowling club to accommodate the 31graduates and their families.

We had such an overwhelming turn out andthe night was very successful! The children

and families enjoyed reminiscing over theyear’s events as they watched the graduationslide show and snapped many pictures of theirchildren in caps and gowns.

The children entertained everyone bysinging a few songs and together as a groupwe all cut the graduation cake. This year wesadly say goodbye to one of the largest groups

of children starting their next adventures oflife and all of the educators at the preschoolare sad to see them go but are proud of theirachievements and know they are going tothrive at big school.

We wish them all the luck in the world andhope they enjoy their school adventures.

The Lions Club of Guyra held their Youth ofthe Year contest on Thursday evening Novem-ber 17th with two contestants, Logan Stanley andKelsie Youman. The program is again spon-sored by the National Australia Bank.

The Lions Youth of the Year Program is de-signed to encourage, foster and develop leader-ship in conjunction with other citizenshipqualities in youth at an age when they are aboutto enter employment or higher education. Thesequalities include leadership, personality, sports-manship, public speaking and good citizenship,all of which are needed to take an active andconstructive role within the community.

The candidates were interviewed by the judg-ing panel consisting of Mr Bill Wicks, Mrs RitaWilliams and Miss Leanne Sweeney (represent-ing the NAB). The quest also involves a publicspeaking segment which required each of thecandidates to deliver a five minute preparedspeech before being given two, two minute im-promptu topics to speak on.

The judges had a very tough job, but awardedboth the interview and public speaking title toKelsie Youman, who now progresses to the nextlevel to be held in Armidale in February nextyear.

Mr Peter Dennis has been ap-pointed to the position of ChiefExecutive Officer (CEO) of Armi-dale Regional Council. He replacesInterim General Manager GlennWilcox who resigned in early Oc-tober citing ‘personal reasons’.

tee Hans Hietbrink, Glenn Inglisformer member of the Independ-ent Local Government ReviewPanel and recently elected Council-lor of Tamworth Regional Counciland recruitment consultantStephen Blackadder.

Mr Dennis recently concludedhis four year contract with SE-QWater in Queensland as ChiefExecutive Officer.

“The Panel was very impressedwith Peter, his obvious skills andexperience but in particular his de-sire to work with the new Counciland to be part of the regionalcommunity,” said Dr Tiley.

MOBILE phone receptionblackspots in the Guyra area willsoon be further reduced with theannouncement of State govern-ment funding to construct newphone towers at Baldersleigh,Aberfoyle and Wongwibinda. Improvements in network cover-age will be delivered through theState Government’s investment of

$15 million into the round 2 of theFederal Mobile Blackspot Pro-gram.Member for Northern TablelandsAdam Marshall said that this is agreat example of State and FederalGovernments and the private sec-tor working together to improveaccess to the network for countrypeople and maximise the number

of towers that could be built.“These towers will greatly enhancesafety and the ability for people inour region to go about their dailylives and business activities,” MrMarshall said.“This program will make a tangibleimprovement to people’s lives inour region and I want to see evenmore benefit in the future.”

Mr Marshall said the combinedCommonwealth and NSW Gov-ernment investment was the great-est increase in mobile networkcoverage to metropolitan, regionaland remote communities deliveredby a single public funding programin the history of Australian mobilecommunications.

Dedication of memorial seatA large number of golfers and

local residents gathered at the golfcourse on Saturday November 26,to dedicate a memorial seat andplay an unusual tournament to cel-ebrate the contribution and dedica-tion of life member BruceThomson.

Bruce, who recently passed away,was both a highly regarded citizenand club member. He was a Sydneyboy who was first attracted toGuyra by a local girl Noeline Starr,whom he married in 1961.

Although Bruce worked for theagricultural company Grazcos, thefamily was based in Sydney untilBruce and several partnerslaunched the first electronic live-stock weighing company in theworld. The company, known asRuddweigh, was based in Guyraand the concept expanded rapidlybecoming probably the secondlargest private employer in townapart from the abattoir.

During his spare time Brucetook up golf which he enjoyed im-

mensely. He was extremely gener-ous to the struggling club, withbroken machinery being repairedby Ruddweigh free of charge.

In 1994 Bruce and a group ofsenior players formed the GuyraVeteran Golfers, of which Brucewas the Secretary/Treasurer for 17years and the driving force in itsexpansion, organizing tournamentsand working bees. He also ob-tained government grants whichresulted in the golf cart sheds andthe course toilets.

Bruce was involved with theamalgamation of the Golf andBowling Clubs and initiated the re-juvenation of Saturday golf withthe ‘Mollie Sole’ competition, ben-efitting the whole community. Hiscontribution was recognized by allmembers with life membershipseveral years ago.

A dream of Bruce’s was fulfilledwith the golf event being a twoperson ambrose over 10 holes, all3 par holes. The winner was JoyceBetts and Jenny Rogers.

Over two thousand years have passed sincethat first Christmas, when our Saviour JesusChrist was born in lowly cattle shed. Christ by highest heaven adored;Christ, the everlasting Lord!Late in time behold Him come,offspring of the Virgin’s womb.Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;hail the incarnate Deity,Pleased as man with men to dwell,Jesus our Emmanuel. At Christmas, God gives the

great gift of himself. That veryfirst Christmas, God came toearth as one of us, a baby, bornof a virgin, laid in the manger.Jesus is no ordinary man, he isnot just a holy man, a teacher,or even a prophet. Jesus is Godhimself, taking on flesh, and

walking and living amongst hispeople.

The first verse tells us why.God took this extraordinarystep, he left his throne inheaven, came as a baby, andlived amongst us and wit us,not for his own sake, but forour sake;

Hark! the herald angels sing,“Glory to the newborn King;Peace on earth, and mercy mild,God and sinners reconciled.” Jesus was born that very first

Christmas, to reconcile us toGod. To bring guilty sinnersback to God. That includes allof us. Every single one of ushas rebelled against our maker,we don’t listen to him, we don’tfollow him, we don’t let God,be God. Every single personwho has ever lived, is a rebeldeserving judgment and con-demnation. God tells us theonly punishment that fits ourcrime, is death.

Without Jesus, that is exactlywhat we will get. But at Christ-

mas, we remember that Godhas done what we could not. Assinners and rebels, we can’t saveourselves. But God can. It all happened in a moment, amost remarkable moment, a mo-ment like no other...it was extra-ordinary. In a stable 2000 oddyears ago a virgin teenager gavebirth to a baby boy and laid Himin a manger. His name, Jesus.The one who had previouslyoverlooked the universe lookedup at his mother Mary. Jesus hadabandoned heaven’s throne roomin favour of a dirty sheep pen.The creator became the created.The One who spoke the worldinto existence humbly madeHimself dependant on a firsttime mum for his nurture andcare.

Shepherds camped out guard-ing the sheep had their night in-terrupted by an explosion oflight in the night sky as an angelannounced, “the good news ofgreat joy for all people ... aSaviour has been born.” Leavingthe sheep they hurried off to thestable of Bethlehem and foundJesus in the manger just as theangel had said. Going their waythey couldn’t help but tell othersof the extraordinary good news.

So, what is the good news ofChristmas? What is at the heartof it all? Well, it was God on a

mission trip to restore relation-ship between us and himself. Be-ginning at the cradle ofBethlehem and going on to thecross of Jerusalem, God was set-ting out to make a way... a wayfor all wrongs to be made right ...a way for ugly pasts to be for-given ... a way that restores hope,meaning and purpose in life. Hisdesire is that we might know Hisamazing love and His transform-ing power in our lives, setting usfree from things that ensnare usand weigh us down. A relation-ship with God changes both ourdirection and destination.

Someone said: “If our greatestneed had been information, Godwould have sent an educator. Ifour greatest need had been tech-nology, God would have sent usa scientist. If our greatest needhad been money, God wouldhave sent us an economist. Butsince our greatest need is for-giveness, God sent us a Saviour.”

It has been amazing to watchstudents achieve:

* Sports - Wahkeem Pattersonran in the 9 year old 100 metresprint at State Athletics.

* Academic arenas - Jake Faint,Hollie Hoade, Patrick Faint,Lachlan Savage, Samuel Savageand Thomas Savage sat for theAustralian Mathematics Competi-tion, showing off their problemsolving skills.

The school’s P&C associationraise funds to support studentlearning. This year the P&C sup-ported senior students in visitingSydney for a week. This opportu-nity is invaluable for studentlearning, growth of independenceand social development. TheP&C have also supported theschool to purchase readers, andare working towards raising fundsfor larger items, identified fromwish lists prepared by the school.The P&C work closely with staffand students to ensure the opti-mum learning for all.

Leaders have many opportuni-ties to extend their skills at BlackMountain, attending the GRIPLeadership conference, being in-spired by leaders at the PrimaryLeadership Luncheon, and hold-ing many leadership roles withinthe school, including addressingdaily assemblies and coordinatingmonthly school assemblies.

The Under 12 Bushrangers have had a good first half of the year witha few new players and some older players who have been there for a fewyears. They are doing quite well as they learn to play together as a team.

From their eight games so far they have had three wins, two draws andthree losses. All the team are making runs and taking wickets and theirfielding is getting better as the cricket season goes on.

Wet weather had impacted on some of the games, however their gameshave all been very close which is great for a side that is still getting to know each other.

Guyra golfers have enjoyed severalmonths of competition in beautifulspring weather. Belinda Lenehan,representing Guyra, won the NewEngland District Golf Association(NEDGA) Medal Playoff for Divi-sion 2 at Tenterfield Golf Course inOctober with a scintillating 77 net.Belinda qualified to compete at Statelevel, on the magnificent Stonecut-ter’s Ridge Golf Course this month.Guyra golfers wish her well in thischallenge. Belinda is representingthe New England District alongsideCheryl McDonald (Division 1) andJeanette Wark (Division 3) ofWalcha.Other important events in Octoberwere the Guyra Welding Works Tro-phy for the 4BBB Stableford Cham-pionship which was won by WendyGeorge and Jenny Shiels with 60 Sta-bleford points. On the 26th Wendy

George donated trophies for a fundraiser for the tee off for Breast Can-cer Day, with the support of GuyraBowls and Recreation Club. Thewinners on the day were DonnaWhite and Wendy Jackson whocarded 56 Stableford points.On the 29th several women com-

peted at Walcha in the New SouthWales Women’s Sand Green Cham-pionships, where there was an excel-lent field of 79 competitors whorepresented clubs from various areasof the state. Guyra players enjoyedthe weekend by finishing mid-field inthe results. The annual golf trip was a resound-ing success in November when weplayed Casino, Ballina and OceanShores Golf Courses. The standardof golf was outstanding with somegood score cards returned. AtCasino, Belinda Lenehan and VickiReeves scored 43 points in the 4BBB

Stableford. At Ballina, Wendy Jack-son won the trophy donated by Bar-bara Denning in the singles eventwith 43 Stableford points. At OceanShores, Meg Simpson and Pip Whiteplayed brilliant golf to win the 4BBBStroke with a 63 net.Karen Oehlers won the Kirk’s MatchPlay Trophy, defeating WendyGeorge in a good match, lastWednesday. Presentations of per-petual trophies will be made at theChristmas Party on the 21st Decem-ber. Best wishes for Christmas andgood golfing in 2017.

Preschool: For children aged 18months to 5 years. There are twogrades based on age. A parent orguardian is required to be in the waterwith their child at all times.

18 months to 3 years: Lessonsteach basic skills such as entry andexit, going underwater, floating andbreathing.

Maximum of six children per class3 years to 5 Years: Lessons teach

basic stroke and survival skills and de-velop independence from adult sup-port.

The 27th annual Guyra BowlsCarnival has been played and thewinners are grinners, while the remainder of the bowlers go homeand lament for another year.

The Carnival kicked off onTuesday November 29th with theplaying of the Open Women’sTriples. There were 18 teams en-tered and the winners were Jan An-derson, Jan Leader and Jan Hobdayfrom Inverell. The runners-upwere C Vidulich, D Kirkman andP Romer from Tenterfield.

Wednesday November 30th saw16 teams venture on to the greensto play the Mixed Triples. Winnerswere G Porter, B Johnson and KPorter from Armidale Ex Services.Runners up were C McFayden, BWhite and P McFayden (a compos-ite team).

Thursday December 1st and Fri-day December 2nd saw theSchweppes Prestige Pairs played.32 teams contested this event andafter 5 games of 21 ends the finalfour teams were determined.
