Fluker post

Last weekend, Martin Fluker of Victoria University visited the Warrnambool Campus to install a Fluker Post (D1). The post is part of a community-based environmental monitoring system. Passers-by are invited to take a photo from the top of the post and to send it to an email address that is given on the signage on the post. The photo is then added to an online photo collection for that particular location.

The D1 post is located in the garden bed near the tee-off for the 9th hole on the golf course, immediately behind Building D. Please stop by and contribute a photo to the collection, which can be viewed by following the link at http://www.flukerpost.com/

The D1 post joins two others that have been installed as part of a collaboration between Deakin University, Victoria University and students and teachers from Warrnambool East Primary School – the other posts are WEPS1 (Point Richie) and WEPS2 (Lady Bay). The students at Warrnambool East will be watching these collection closely to see what changes are evident in the photos over time.

Health and Wellbeing News – Residences

International Day Against Homophobia To celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia at Warrnambool, Deakin Allies will have a drop-in discussion with morning tea including a free coffee from the café if you would like to join an informal discussion.

Nicole Downes and Roxanne Thomson will lead the discussions and we would encourage you to come along and take part.

This event will be held on Thursday 22 May at 10:30am in the Riverview café. Look for the table with the rainbow flag and our Deakin Allies banner.

Become a Smoke-free Ambassador

WANTED! Enthusiastic supporters of the Deakin Smoke-Free Policy to become ambassadors. We are looking for people who can fill one of two ambassador positions:

1. First is a paid position where the ambassadors are required to work for 1 hour 3 days a week for 12 weeks. They will be paid $250 onto their Deakin card and they will receive a certificate acknowledging their support. These ambassadors will be required to wear a Deakin Smoke-Free t-shirt whilst on campus and in groups of 2 will politely approach anyone they see smoking. They'll also be provided with merchandise to hand out to anyone who wants to show their support. Essentially, they will be our eyes and noses whilst creating a "presence" on campus to help us promote and enforce the Smoke-Free policy.

2. The second position is a volunteer position for those who aren’t able to make this time commitment. We would require volunteers to help out with events such as open day and world tobacco free day. While you won't get paid, it will certainly be a great addition to your CV!

We also ask that the ambassadors help us come up with different and engaging ways to promote the Smoke-Free policy. All ambassadors will receive training. Dates haven’t been set but we are aiming to run it in the week of May 19th.

If this is something that interests you, could you please email Rachel Isaacs at [email protected] detailing what your background is (i.e. what you’re studying) and what sort of experience you could bring to the position? Also please confirm which campus you’re primarily based at.
