Frankfurt Book Fair 2016

Since its inception in 1960, Hurtubise has produced a diverse range of quality books. Based in Montreal, the company publishes nearly 75 titles a year. The literary catalogue of Hurtubise is one of the most prestigious among the country’s francophone publishers, for youth and adults alike, with more than 900 titles to its name.

Today, more than ever, Hurtubise’s top priority is to encourage writing in all its forms : novels (popular fiction and literature), children’s books, and essays. For over five years, Hurtubise also began establishing itself in the world of young adult fiction by publishing well-known authors such as Sophie Rondeau (Selfies et sushis and Cupcakes et claquettes series), Luc Gélinas (C’est la faute à… series), Sarah-Maude Beauchesne (Lèche-vitrines and Cœur de slush) et Rose-Line Brasset (Juliette series).

Throughout the years, Hurtubise has sought to develop new markets by selling rights in foreign countries. Some titles, such as Le froid modifie la tra-jectoire des poissons by Pierre Szalowski, have been translated into 13 languages and enjoy a respectable level of international success.

Depuis 1960, les Éditions Hurtubise offrent des livres de qualité qui répondent aux goûts et aux besoins des lecteurs. Basées à Montréal, elles publient près de 75 titres par an. Le catalogue littéraire des Éditions Hurtubise est l’un des plus prestigieux parmi les éditeurs francophones du pays, pour les jeunes comme pour les adultes, avec plus de 900 titres au catalogue.

Nothing is going right for the Trappers, the football team at Trois-Colombes High School. When accidents are caused by the equipment supporting a mountain climber coming loose, the climber is said to have become “unanchored”. Dévissage (Unanchored) is the story of this journey, of what it takes for a human being to climb Everest, of the difficulties of the expedition, the interactions of the group, of staggering mountain scenes that take your breath away. Most of all, it is the story of how this journey will transform Alice. Because of course when she returns, nothing can go back to how it used to be.

Born in France, arriving in Quebec in 2002, IRIS DELAGRANGE has lived in Montérégie for several years. She splits her time between her family, journalism, and fiction. Unanchored is her first novel.

Un « dévissage » est un accident de montagne, lorsque le matériel qui soutient l’alpiniste décroche. C’est symboliquement ce qui arrive à Alice, professionnelle et célibataire de Montréal, quand son père meurt de façon soudaine et prématurée. Alice doit reconsidérer tous les aspects de sa vie, car elle prend conscience que, malgré le confort dans lequel elle évolue, tout ce qu’elle a construit s’avère com-plètement inutile.

Le hasard l’amène à regarder un documentaire sur l’ascension de l’Everest qu’elle trouve passionnant. Elle va ensuite assister à une conférence sur ce sujet et elle en revient troublée, obsédée. Finalement, Alice décide de se lancer dans l’aventure. Dévissage est l’histoire de ce voyage, de ce qu’exige l’ascension de l’Everest pour un être humain, des difficultés de l’expédition, des interactions dans le groupe, des scènes de montagne qui donnent le vertige et coupent le souffle. Mais ce roman raconte surtout la façon dont ce voyage transformera Alice. Car à son retour, bien sûr, rien ne pourra reprendre comme avant.

Née en France, arrivée au Québec en 2002, IRIS DELAGRANGE vit depuis des années en Montérégie. Elle partage son temps entre sa famille, le journalisme et la fiction. Dévissage est son premier roman.

Le trapéziste du cirque, ramassant des bouteilles sur la grève au moment du drame, se projette dans l’avenir. La cuisinière du cirque, à qui on ne demande jamais son avis, affirme avoir pris soin de la victime la veille. L’avaleur de feu a dansé avec elle. L’ermite s’est un jour enfoui dans la forêt pour oublier un drame semblable… Tous les récits sont traversés par l’écho de celui de Marie, la serveuse ; il y a longtemps, elle a pris la fuite au volant de sa camionnette « parce qu’un jour, un bête petit jour comme les autres, mais enfoncé dans la chaleur, on craque ».

It is to them that the author, Sandrine Malarde, gives a voice.

Born in France, SANDRINE MALARDE holds a Masters in Sociology from the University of Montreal. She is currently teaching college courses. La vie secrète des Hassidim is her first book.

Pollution due to the accumulation of plastic increases each day at a frightening pace, not to mention the negative impact this has on the health and survival of mammals, fish, birds… of the planet! Of course, it is possible to recycle a portion of petroleum-based plastics, but this recycling has its limits, and universal recycling is a utopian dream. We are headed towards a burial of the planet under a mountain of plastic debris.

Current technology would allow us to halt this uncontrollable and polluting accumulation by making plastic out of plants: veggieplastic. Discovered in the 1920s, at the same time as petroleum-based plastic, veggieplastic was quickly overshadowed by the popularity of oil.

This work demonstrates that starting now, we could: - Eliminate plastic from landfills by composting them with household food waste; - Eliminate much of our need for chemical fertilizers – heavy polluters and energy consumers – by replacing them with composted table waste and plastic; - Make poor soil fertile and contribute to agricultural resurgence; - Make the giant plastic “continents’’ that float upon the ocean disappear; - Protect numerous endangered animal species;- Save at least 4% of the world’s hydrocarbons by replacing petroleum-based plastic with vegetable-based plastic.

PAUL LAVALLÉE is a Doctor of Physics (biophysics) and a retired professor of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Université du Quebec à Montréal. A sailing enthusiast, he is also passionate about scientific popularization.
