Prévenir le cancer Comment réduire les risques
Preventing Cancer How to Reduce the Risks
A frightening and enigmatic disease, cancer is the main cause of death in most industrialized countries. In the past decade, numerous studies have shown a link between the high inci-dence of several types of cancer and lifestyle factors in these countries. In other words, there is a direct link between smoking, excessive weight, sedentary lifestyle and diet and the appearance and progression of can-cer cells.
This book provides the information needed by those who want to take their future into their own hands. It focuses on all the preventative steps known today by leading researchers and public health agencies, such as the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Cancer Society. These two organizations have come out with 10 major recommen-dations dealing with food and alcohol consumption, weight, physical exer-cise, smoking, dietary supplements and exposure to ultraviolet rays. These recommendations are especially important for cancer survivors and provide, for the first time, a practical approach to reduce the risk of a recur-rence of their cancer.

Welcome to the Century of Diversity The New Cultural World Map
Jean-Louis Roy
The shifting in wealth from the West to Asia, and from Asia to Latin Ame-rica and Africa, has redrawn the glo-bal economic map. These profound changes have coincided with the dramatic boom of the virtual world, whose abundance of content has won over billions in a matter of a few decades.
But any major deviation in industry, trade or technology inevitably has significant repercussions on culture. Bearing this in mind, Jean-Louis Roy–a 21st-century cartographer of sorts–set out to compile and analyze the infor-mation required to chart a new cultu-ral world map. Using data derived from various studies, he examined the public- and private-sector investments made by emerging powers and ana-lyzed possible scenarios involving the international trade of cultural assets. Welcome to the century of diversity!

9Demain, il sera trop tard, mon fils
Tomorrow Will Be Too Late, My Son
Lucie Pagé, in collaboration with Kami Naidoo-Pagé and Jay Naidoo
Have you ever stopped to consider what kind of planet we are leaving our children? Have you questioned yourself about the quality of the water, soil, oceans, forest and air; about the cyclones, tsunamis, drought and flooding; and about wars, poverty and corruption? “There has been a genocide of values,” claims Kami Naidoo-Pagé in Tomorrow Will Be Too Late, My Son. The book describes a frank exchange with his mother, journalist and writer Lucie Pagé, about the atrocious human and ecological debt that is being bequeathed to his generation. In an increasingly complex world, this conversation between mother and son attempts to cross the intergenerational gap and plot a course for social justice. Kami, born in 1992 under South Africa’s apartheid regime, is also the son of Jay Naidoo, an anti-apartheid activist, founding General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions and cabinet minister in the government of Nelson Mandela.

11Les Fantômes de la Sierra Maestra
The Ghosts of the Sierra Maestra
Paul Ohl
A veritable literary mural The Ghosts of the Sierra Maestra presents a factual and thoroughly documented account of the events between 1949 and 1959 that led up to the Cuban revolution.
The result of a long enslavement and bloody attempts at independence, this revolution became a major event in 20th-century history, embodying an insane ideal and the heroic destiny of a small nation held hostage by the world’s greatest economic and military power. The winds of this revolution have long abated, but the island nation of Cuba remains haunted by ghosts that no one has been able to silence. At the heart of this masterfully told story is the intersection of the extra-ordinary destinies of four icons who left an indelible mark on the political and literary history of the 20th-century and who are forever linked by the Cuban revolution: Ernest Hemingway, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Fidel Castro and Jean-Paul Sartre.

13 Le vent en parle encore
The Wind Still Bears Witness
Michel Jean
On the orders of the Canadian go-vernment, fourteen-year-olds Virginie, Marie and Thomas are torn from their families. Along with the village’s other children, they are sent by plane to be educated at a remote residential school on an island some 1,000 kilo-metres from their home. There, their hair is cut. They are washed and assi-gned a uniform. They are forbidden to speak their language. They no longer have a name. They are now just a number.
Seventy years later, lawyer Audrey Du-val sets out to understand what hap-pened at Fort George, the damned windswept island of misery, and what became of the three young people who mysteriously disappeared with-out a trace.
This is a story in which love and friend-ship are sometimes the only defences against aggression and violence.

The Dwarf
Francine Brunet
Thirty-two-year-old Edmond Laliberté, nicknamed The Dwarf, speaks very little and only to his cousin Martin, but he records everything in mul-tiple notebooks using a code that he has invented and that he alone can decipher. He loves trains, lives on Kit-chener Street in an English-speaking neighbourhood and enjoys strolling along Ducharme Boulevard. This is the story of a family that is slowly smothe-ring in the shadow of the “mill,” the former plant belonging to an interna-tional paper company that once em-ployed 1,000 workers. It is the story of the three Blanchard sisters, Eva, Diane and Marion, and of two sons, Edmond and Martin.
Into their family drama come stran-gers who seek to unravel the mystery of hemo chromatosis, a rare illness that has suddenly afflicted so many of the city’s residents: Dr. Alice Pelle-tier, an attractive and brilliant foren-sic scientist; detective Luciano Vidal, overly qualified to lead investigations at the Sûreté du Québec’s new police station; and agent Harold Michaud, whose brother Trois Gallons is a for-mer associate of the motorcycle gang that controls the trafficking of amphe-tamine drugs in the area.

Albert Brown has just died, leaving behind a wife, Augustine, and three daughters. The eldest daughter, Téré-sa, is the product of her father’s earlier relationship with Thelma, a woman whom he loved deeply. Albert was a strict man and she has inherited that trait. She is as uptight as he was and a complete stranger to the pleasures of the flesh. Her sister, Alyssa, passively accepts her marriage to an unfaithful and absent artist who is distant from their son. The youngest sister, Anne, who was the brunt of her father’s pre-judices, has built a life to shield herself from his judgmental barbs. A lesbian and dancer, she becomes the object of fascination of a manboy who leads her to doubt her sexual orientation. Au-gustine, now a widow and filled with regret, realizes that it is too late to start over but not too late to do better.
As the novel progresses, these four very different women change, learn to define themselves in their own terms rather than how others see them, move beyond what “they should be” and become simply what they are.

Where Do The Wasps Go When It Gets Cold?
Pascale Wilhelmy
After years of failed love affairs, Julia finally finds true romance with cabinetmaker Laurent. Seven months into the relationship, Laurent is found dead in his workshop the day after the couple spend a romantic dinner together. The shock is so devastating that Julia loses the ability to speak.
Where Do The Wasps Go When It Gets Cold ? recounts her slow ascent out of darkness, back to her children, to her friends, to life that goes on and to love again.
How can you speak about the unspeakable ? Pascale Wilhelmy does so with sensitivity and an economy of words that leaves ample room for every emotion.

The sequel to Where Do The Wasps Go When It Gets Cold ? begins on the first day of the new year with new resolutions : “Find a religion. Learn to box. Smash his nose.”
Julia’s “skin” has healed, thanks to Julien, a lover who caresses her wounds and understands without questioning. But there is anger still raging inside her. Resolved to make peace with herself, Julia seeks to find the root causes of this anger. Her search leads back 13 years to a dark night when a man went too far, leaving her battered and bruised. The discovery sets her on a quest for revenge and forgiveness that will lead her farther than she could ever have imagined.

Go Get It The Unusual Destiny of Julia Verdi
After a fortune teller predicts “fame and fortune,” Julia Verdi is devastated when Francis, the man to whom she entrusted her heart, leaves her. She is unaware that it is the rejection and not the end of the relationship that really hurts. She now sets out to find the man who has always loved her: David Trueblood.
Just as they are about to meet and re-kindle their relationship, David is killed in a car accident while trying to avoid hitting a dog. Julia tries unsuccessfully to cope with his death. One day she finds an abandoned dog and, in spite of her aversion to all canines, decides to rescue the animal. Persuaded to train the abandoned animal and make him a better pet, Julia finally realizes that, after all the training, she is the one who has learned a lesson.

From Mothers to Daughters Volume 1 – Alice
Dominique Drouin
The destiny of four women artists plays out against the backdrop of the 20th century in this four-volume family fresco that traces their evolution in different art forms. Alice, Ariane, Anaïs and Ava experience passion, love and heartache as they evolve their art.
Volume 1 recounts the story of Alice Achard, born in Provence in 1890, the product of a secret and illicit union between Maurice Achard and Jeanne Martin. Entrusted to a nanny from her first year of life, Alice is adopted by Jeanne’s sister, Marianne Martin, who is oblivious to the affair between her husband and her younger sister. Alice’s early life is built on this stain and lie. Constantly in search of love, she yearns to find out where she came from. Only music will bring her solace and fill the void.

Once there, Ariane, the heroine of Volume 2 of this saga, does everything in her power to find a respectable job that will help her escape poverty. A born fighter and feminist before her time, she makes her mark in the world of radio of the 1930s to the 50s. Constantly at odds with her mother and younger sister, Ariane finds love and comfort in the arms of Marcel, an ambitious publicist. Sickness, tribula-tions and infidelities, however, deal a major blow to the couple. What about Eugène, her childhood friend? What place will he have in Ariane’s heart?

The Sweet Life of Juliette GagnonVolume 1 – Skinny jeans and bubble gum- flavoured ice cream
Nathalie Roy
A brand new series begins with Juliette Gagnon, the daughter of Charlotte Lavigne. The young twenty-something works as a photographer for a well-known studio. Her boss, a bitter wo-man, is jealous of her talent and youth. Juliette is single and looking for that one great love, but she has an uncan-ny ability of attracting some bad cha-racters or falling head over heels for her models! In short, her love life is a disaster. Things would be so simple if she could see F-X as more than just a childhood friend.
Surrounded by engaging people, Juliette embarks on extraordinary, bi-zarre and sometimes even surreal ad-ventures, all too often at the whim of her friends. Will her career take off, in spite of this? Will she finally find love?

Several months after the surprising conclusion of the first instalment of The Sweet Life of Juliette Gagnon, Juliette and her friends, Marie-Pier and Clémence, are back. Now a mo-ther, Marie-Pier is taking motherhood too seriously, to the dismay of her friends, who are forced to intervene. Clémence is adapting relatively well to her new life as a divorcee but would deeply love to find a soulmate again. As for Juliette, she is in a complicated relation ship with her childhood friend, F-X, while pursuing her career as a photo grapher at Studio 54, run by her despicable boss Danicka. Once again, Juliette’s work will lead her into pre-posterous situations that push her to finally decide to set off on her own.

Betting on Men Volume 1 – The Wager
Marie-Claude Martel, Anik Lessard
This three-volume series recounts the rollicking adventures of Ève and Mylène, two childhood friends who are very different from one another. Ève is a wife and mother, trapped in an unsatisfactory 12-year marriage, while Mylène is the consummate ad-venturer.
After an unexpected event, Ève de-cides that she can no longer endure a loveless marriage, devoid of passion and sex. She leaves her husband and returns to the single life, convinced that she will quickly find a worthy lover.
In spite of her friend’s enthusiasm, Mylène remains skeptical. A girls’ ou-ting to New York City sets the scene for a wager between the two friends: each must find a new partner before Valentine’s Day and, this time, he must be Mr. Right!

Betting on Men Volume 2 – Revenge
Marie-Claude Martel, Anik Lessard
Volume 1 in the series set the stage for a bet between Ève and Mylène. Now Volume 2 focuses on Philippe, a.k.a. the intense Cyrano. Unbeknown to both women, they have fallen for the same man! In spite of being the world’s best lover, the overly free-thinking Philippe will be forced to face the music for his actions. Com-petitive and proud, Ève always has to have the last word but finds it hard to resist sex with this man who has helped her rediscover the pleasures of the flesh and provided that bit of outrageous fun that has been cruelly lacking in her life. Mylène, who lacks confidence when it comes to men, is bent on putting any man who has cheated on her and deceived her in his place. The two women finally join forces to exact revenge.

The Flight Attendant Volume 1 – The Take-Off of Scarlett Lambert
Elizabeth Landry
Thirty-year-old Scarlett is a flight atten-dant. Her friends constantly tell her that she wants too much out of life. But, as she sees it, there’s nothing wrong with wanting it all : career, love, family, home, children, a cat and a dog… She landed a dream job, didn’t she ? So eve-rything else should surely follow !
But the life of a flight attendant is anything but restful, with trips to the four corners of the world, comi-cal mishaps on an overnight flight and outrageous stories recounted by co-workers. Scarlett, intense ? Somewhat. A perfectionist? Definite- ly! But the day is coming when she will have to face a virtually impos-sible relationship. Will she say yes to love and, if so, at what cost ?

What is one to do when nothing is go-ing right anymore and when a one-year sabbatical to meditate in an ash-ram in India is out of the question? Malika, a former anorexic and worry-wart who has been carting around the baggage of her life since childhood, has every reason to be cracking: half of a couple that is no longer a couple, a boring job and co-workers that she despises as much as they des pise her. She decides to pack it all in and enrol in intensive group therapy but soon realizes that not only will she not at-tain enlightenment, but the experi-ence will also fail to help her move forward. Between sharing woes in group sessions and attempting to se-duce the young kitchen staff, Malika will come away from the experience unhealed but with a new awareness of the power of resistance.

Jack Une enquête de Joseph Laflamme
Jack An Investigation by Joseph Laflamme
Montreal, 1891. The body of a pros-titute is discovered in a street of the Red Light district. This is the first of a series of murders which will go al-most unnoticed. In a society made up mainly of Catholic and clericalised French Canadians and stilted Victori-an Anglo-Saxons, dead ladies of plea-sure are of no interest to the good people. Yet these murders resemble nothing so much as those commit-ted by Jack the Ripper in London between 1888 and 1891, and only Joseph Laflamme, a somewhat clue-less reporter of the daily La Minerve, notices the disturbing similarities be-tween the London victims and those of Montreal.
As the reporter enters the partitioned world of the English bourgeoisie, he discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. Several potential suspects have recently arrived from England… Obviously, everyone has their secrets and could be the culprit. Is it a copy-cat or Jack the Ripper himself who has crossed the Atlantic to strike un-disturbed in Montreal?

The place is Montreal. The body of a young woman is discovered, nude and decapitated, in a rundown building on Saint-Antoine Street. Who is she ? If identifying the victim is proving to be a challenge, uncovering the iden-tity of the killer has police grappling with other more complex problems. For Lieutenant Detective Donnola, this monstrous execution does not fit into any known category.
In provocative and metaphorical style, the author deftly weaves a web of politics and sexuality amid a police investigation. Filled with atypical pro-tagonists and set against a backdrop of libertarian protest, Bring Me Lara Crevier’s Head ! is a violent assault on law and order, the police, the State and its bloodhounds…
