THIS proverbial game of two halveswill no doubt provide Bristol Cityhead coach Sean O’Driscoll withmuch food for thought.

A confirmed advocate of posses-sion-based football, the Midlander ad-opted his preferred Plan A during theopening 45 minutes.

When it failed to yield a waythrough a packed Colchester defence,he was forced to revert to Plan B, tenminutes into the second half.

Marlon Harewood came off thebench to provide City’s attack with amuch-needed focal point and histeam-mates responded by embracinga more direct approach in a spiritedquest to cancel out Matthew Taylor’sheaded goal for the U’s.

Although O’Driscoll remains com-mitted to Plan A, even he must ac-knowledge the effectiveness of Plan Bin confronting opponents who werehell-bent on putting men behind theball to protect a slender lead.

A pattern is emerging in gamesplayed at Ashton Gate this season andtactics adopted first by Shrewsburyand now by Colchester will conceiv-ably become the norm for teams vis-iting BS3.

Quite content to let City have theball in their own half, Joe Dunne’sside retreated in two banks of fourand invited the Robins to try andbreak them down. If the idea was tofrustrate the home side and thencatch them out with swiftly-launchedcounter-attacks, it worked up to apoint.

Having soaked up pressure anddemonstrated only limited attackingintent during the opening 25 minutes,Colchester broke out and forged alead against the run of play, on-loanBradford defender Taylor rising highat the far post to head in Luke Gar-bu t t ’s excellent out-swinging centrefrom the left.

All of which rendered City’s taskmore difficult still. Now withsomething tangible to hold onto, theU’s made no attempt to disguise theirintention of defending in numbersfrom deep inside their own half.

Determined to adhere to their pa-tient passing game, City were presen-ted with a major problem to solve;how to translate superior possessioninto clear-cut goal-scoring opportun-i t i e s.

Recourse to statistical analysis willno doubt reveal a high percentage ofcompleted passes by the Robins in thefirst half. But they were ponderous in

Harewood’s presence in attack gives City another optionBristol City vs Colchester United | Ashton Gate, Saturday, September 28

their approach at times and, slow tomove the ball forwards, were unableto hurt the visitors in the areas whereit really mattered.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and SamBaldock both sent first-time shotsoff-target, but U’s keeper Sam Walkerwas not seriously tested until Hare-wo o d ’s arrival heralded a switch toPlan B.

A physical presence in and aroundthe penalty area, the former AstonVilla and West Ham forward encour-

aged his team-mates to go from backto front more quickly now that theyhad a target to aim at.

His arrival freed-up Em-manuel-Thomas to play between thelines and run at defenders, whileaffording the mobile Baldock a levelof support that transformed him intoa genuine threat.

B a l d o ck ’s sixth goal of the season, laid on a plate for him by substituteStephen McLaughlin, and a series ofnear-misses thereafter, proved the ef-fectiveness of a more direct style.

Had a curling shot from the re-juvenated Emmanuel-Thomas and aclose-range header from Baldock notflashed agonisingly wide of goal, wewould now be discussing City’s firstLeague win of the season.

Indeed, City’s second-half improve-ment surely begs the question whydoes O’Driscoll not simply abandonPlan A and adopt Plan B from theoutset of the next game?

The answer is simple; Harewood is

more effective when used as an im-pact substitute and O’Driscoll hasstill to find a way of including the bigstriker in the same starting line-up asEmmanuel-Thomas and Baldockwithout compromising his team’s de-fensive integrity.

Defending remains an issue and amix-up between centre-backs AdenFlint and Derrick Williams presentedU’s forward Jabo Ibehre with an op-portunity to win the game at thedeath. Fortunately for City, Williamsrecovered in magnificent fashion toexecute a goal-saving tackle in thenick of time.

A winning goal for Colchesterwould have represented rough justiceindeed, given the manner in whichthe Robins went about cancelling outa deficit for the second home game insuccession.

Rather than allow themselves to becowed by a high-pressure situation,O’Driscoll’s charges responded in amanner that can only bode well forthe future, displaying bravery on theball and running themselves to stand-still in a common cause.

The Ashton Gate crowd respondedand played their part in a second-halfrecovery that suggests that elusivefirst win is just around the corner.

One of only four clubs yet to re-gister a league victory this season –Bolton, Sheffield Wednesday and Ac-crington Stanley are also still waiting– City have nevertheless drawn moregames than they have lost and areshowing genuine signs of improve-ment.

Colchester boss Dunne bestsummed it up in the post-match pressconference when he said: “BristolCity are close. They are really close togetting it right.”

I’M starting to wonder what headcoach Sean O'Driscoll takes Bris-tol City fans for.

He comes across as pretty dour, has little personality and hasmade few attempts to engagewith fans. All of that I can takewith the belief, that he is puttingthe building blocks in place, thatwill see my team return to theChampionship, much strongerand able to establish itself.

Please, however, do not putwords into our mouths and don'ttake us for muppets.

This week we have had to listento how this young City side mustlearn to cope with the pressure ofe x p e c t at i o n s.

City's head coach said of theColchester game: “It’s a game thewhole city expects to go and win5-0 or 6-0."

That follows on from his com-ments that we expected City toroll over Shrewsbury.

Let me tell you Mr O'Driscoll, the vast majority of fans whohave watched your sides go 18league games without a win havere-evaluated what we expect andno one would have expected us toscore six on Saturday, evenagainst a Colchester side without11 first-team players.

As a relegated team with somequality players on the books, it'strue I would expect us to be beat-ing teams like Shrewsbury andColchester. O’Driscoll will pointto the possession that we had inboth games, but in truth howmuch of a threat did we carry inboth?

How many saves did the op-position goalkeeper have tomake? Possession is all very goodif there is an end product, at themoment I'm not seeing it.

It's great to have the ball, butyou have to move it with purposeand pace. We play it across theback line three or four times andthen launch it forward. Col-chester, Shrewsbury and theSwindon game in between, theopposition were there for the tak-ing and I wonder if someone moremotivational could have achievedbetter results.

I said at the start of the seasonthat our priority had to be tomake a strong start and ensurethat we established ourselves inLeague One and then look up. Weare at this moment in time strug-gling to do that and there is a realdanger that we face a relegationbattle for yet another season.

The chairman and directorsare quiet and at the moment Ireally think that the club has lostits way. So what's the answer?

Some will call for O’Driscoll'shead, but I personally at thisstage, don't think that's the an-swer. When the side puts it to-gether they are very good and I dothink that a win will do the sidethe world of good.

You also have to say that chan-ging managers every season isnot going to lead to stability. However, you cannot carry on awinless run and not expect re-p e rc u s s i o n s.

City have to start with an or-thodox front two. Marlon Hare-wood has caused problems whenhe has come on and it must beworth starting with Sam Baldocknext week away at Port Vale.

FAR from allowing his Bristol Cityleague debut to go to his head, young goalkeeper Elliot Parishheaded for home and a date with hitTV series X-Factor after helpinghis side come from behind to sal-vage a point at Ashton Gate.

Having finally dislodged FrankieFielding, the former Aston Villaand Cardiff stopper does not wantto give Robins head coach SeanO’Driscoll cause to change hismind ahead of next Saturday’s tripto Port Vale.

O’Driscoll said: “The shirt is

there to fight for and, if he comes inon Monday morning larging it up,I’ll have to think again.

“You can never tell with players. They can have one game and sud-denly think they’ve made it. I can’tsee that with Elliot, because he’s areally level-headed lad.”

Sure enough, Parish was keepingboth feet firmly rooted to theground after an impressive Leaguedebut for the Robins.

He told the Bristol Post: “Whenyou look at me and Frank, I thinkit’s fair to say I came here as a

number two. But I’m an ambitiousplayer and I want to keep steppingfo r w a rd .

“I saw the number one shirt andwanted it. It’s a competitive in-dustry. We are all playing for oneanother’s shirts and everybodyknows that.

That is checklist number one sor-ted – now I have to do the businessto make sure I stay in the team.

“I need to have a good week andcontinue to work hard in order tomake it difficult for the gaffer.

“ I’ve done that so far and, now

I’ve got the shirt, it’s up to me tokeep it for a long time.”

Apart from gathering a couple oflong-range shots, Parish had littleto do against a Colchester attackthat rarely threatened.

He confided: “I thought it wentquite well for me – I wasn’t too busyand I’d like to keep it that way.

“It crossed my mind that we were20 minutes in and I’d only touchedthe ball a couple of times.

“I’d like to keep it that way, be-cause it makes me look good.

“The lads were a lot better today

and I think this was definitely astep in the right direction. Youcould tell that by the way the fansresponded at the end.”

Colchester manager Joe Dunnefelt a draw was a fair result in theend.

He said: “We had the better of thefirst half and they came on strongand had the momentum in thesecond half. We allowed them tohave the ball in certain areas andthey looked to be dangerous on thecounter-attack. I think our tacticswere spot on.”

PERHAPS the most telling thingJohn Ward said as he talked of sat-isfaction after watching his side se-cure their first away point of theseason was the “decisions” he’d hadto make to finally get it.

The manager admitted after lastwe e ke n d ’s draw against Hartlepoolthat his side had failed to live up toeven the modest expectations he hadset for them and, in the days since, itseems, Ward has finally got to a pointwhere, perhaps, even he feels enoughis enough and some things have tochang e.

Maybe, Ward, a man well-respectedfor the fairness by which he goesabout his business, has been guilty ofgoing out of his way to be accom-modating to the squad as a wholewhen considering which side he shallput out on any given Saturday.

Injuries to key men over the firstfew weeks of the season has allowedhim to do that, but that policy has yetto yield repayment in positive resultsand with a number of players nowseemingly fit and ready to return, it

seems that Ward is ready to exhibit aruthless streak in pursuit of improve-ment.

The likelihood is that Ward is nowforming a strong opinion on themake-up of his most competitive sideand that, as a result, an unlucky fewmay well have to wait patiently forthe opportunity to get back into hist h o u g h t s.

Of those “decisions” the Wardtalked of after the game on Fridaynight, the one that now seems to haveyoungster Tom Lockyer pencilled inas John-Joe O’To o l e ’s first-choicecentral midfield partner was inter-

esting when the wealth of options themanager has at his disposal in thatarea are considered.

Competition for places in this arealooks set to intensify over the comingweeks after Seanan Clucas – a par-ticular favourite of Ward’s last season– made a brief appearance from thebench on Friday night following aseven-month injury-enforced ab-sence, while Ollie Clarke, who alsomade a positive impression on themanager in the final few games of theprevious campaign – is said to benearing fitness after a hamstringp ro bl e m .

An embarrassment of riches is fur-ther highlighted by the fact that Oliv-er Norburn and Andy Bond – bothcentral midfielders by trade – we redeployed in wide areas at RootsHall.

Elsewhere, Ward was allowed thechance to see Matt Harrold and RyanBrunt paired together in attack forthe first time and, while admittingthat they need time and games afterspells out of action because of injury, one suspects that the manager willsee this as his first-choice partner-ship at the top of the team more oftenthan not over the coming weeks.

That the Rovers boss opted to re-place the tiring Brunt with Ellis Har-rison, who has predominantly playedon the wing since being introduced tothe side at the turn of the year, wasalso a slight surprise on a nightwhere Ward had the opportunity tothrust more recognised strikers intoaction from the bench.

next few games; Harrison’s raw paceto trouble tiring central defenders inthe later stages of a game, perhaps, the reason why he looks set to edgeahead of the likes of David Clarkson,Eliot Richards and Mitch Harding atthe moment.

Har rison’s redeployment also sug-gests that Ward looks likely, for thetime being anyway, to sacrifice flairand creativity in favour of work-ratein wider areas – although the de-termination of full-backs MichaelSmith and Lee Brown, who are cur-rently leading the way in terms ofassists this season, to burst into for-ward areas at least offers the man-ager opportunity to temporarilydispense with out-and-out wingers.

If Friday night’s performance atRoots Hall, meanwhile, is a baro-meter by which to measure the suc-cess or otherwise of some of these“decisions”, then those who were inattendance would probably agreethat Ward got it right on this oc-casion. Some may well have beendisappointed that Rovers were unableto go on and claim their first victoryon the road since a 4-2 success atDagenham & Redbridge on EasterMonday after Harrold opened thescoring with a towering header toconvert a Smith cross fromclose-range in the 51st minute.

Few, however, would have been un-happy with a point if it had beenoffered beforehand considering thedisappointing way Rovers had goneabout their business in their last twoengagements on the road – even ifParkes and O’Toole could have se-cured three points when offered dif-

AT last we are up and runningwith our first away point of theseason and it was no surprisethat Matt Harrold got the goal.

I have always felt that oursuccess this season would restvery much on the return to fullfitness of Harrold as strikerswith the knack of scoring goalsare worth their weight in gold.

Last season, we were sayinghow much we were missingMatty and now that he has gottwo in two games I hope hisseason, and the team’s, is nowfully up and running. Until Fri-day night our solitary goal atExeter was all we had to show foraway days.

Roots Hall, particularly on aFriday night, has never been ahappy hunting ground forRovers, although I do recall weonce secured promotion therewith a point in the Smash andGrab days under Don Megson.

It was difficult to tell on Fri-day night if Harrold’s partner-ship with Ryan Brunt could bean ongoing success, but it cer-tainly has potential and perhapsrepresents the best pairing inthe club at the moment.

Our line-up at Southendlooked pretty solid for an awaygame with Ollie Norburn wideon one flank and Andy Bond onthe other.

That is OK if we can achieve adraw in every away game andwin at home.

At least we didn’t look fragileat the back, didn’t concede thatearly goal, and gave as good aswe got for the first half hour.

We inevitably came underpressure after scoring, but atleast we didn’t buckle as thegame hotted up and the tacklesflew in.

John Ward’s line-up got whathe wanted with the point, butnow I feel we need more pace outwide at the Memorial Stadiumand hope that Ellis Harrison forone, gets a start on Saturday.

Norburn playing wide atSouthend became the latest in along line of midfielders to takeup that position since DavidPipe left the club and he reallyd o e s n’t have the pace to slot int h e re.

I suppose the argument is thatNorburn and Bond can “hold thefor t”, while the in-form MichaelSmith and Lee Brown go ram-paging down the wings.

Once again a goal came from aSmith run and cross for Har-ro l d ’s header in much the wayBrown set up the striker againstHartlepool, so even I will behappy if it works and we keeppicking up points.

It is about time we settled inthe top half of the league.

Saturday won’t be easyagainst in-form Fleetwood Townwho are setting a hot pace nearthe top of the table.

Fleetwood? Many don’t knowwhere that is and when youGoogle the football club all youget at first is Fleetwood Mac.

So, again we are playing asmall town club. Now is the timeto push on up the league andsend our visitors further downthat Google list.

ficult one-on-one chances in thedying stages only to be denied bySouthend skipper John White andgoalkeeper Daniel Bentley respect-ively. That would have been harsh onPhil Brown’s side, however, who prob-ably deserved share of the spoils.

“It’s a start,” Ward replied whenasked about the improvement he hadgarnered from his players in the lasttwo games. They’ll need to build on itif they are to emerge with anythingtangible from a game against pro-motion-hopefuls Fleetwood Town atthe Memorial Stadium next Sat-u rd ay.

Ryan Brunt fires off a shot against Southend United on Friday night

We sat back a bit for five or tenminutes after we scored the goal andwe probably got punished for that.Southend are a decent side, though, and it is a good point – even if we area bit disappointed in the changingro o m . ”

He added: “We have to look at it asa little step. We know we haven’tbeen good enough away from home.We don’t need people to tell us that. Itwas a much more united perform-ance and there was maybe that littlebit more togetherness to really dig infor a point.”

Harrold was paired up front withRyan Brunt on the first occasion that

the two players have been fit on thesame day this season.

“I thought Ryan did really wellconsidering he’s been out for awh i l e, ” said Harrold.

“We ’ve been playing catch up withour fitness for a number of weeksand I’m only starting to feel asthough I am getting back into theg roove.

“I felt pretty strange out on thepitch a few weeks ago. I didn’t feel upto speed at all, but I have been train-ing hard and it was a case of stayingpatient in my head.

“I started to feel a bit betteragainst Dagenham a couple of weeks

ago and, although I missed a penaltyand we lost the game, I took a bit ofbelief from that game because I felt alot better physically.”

Harrold, meanwhile, enjoyed scor-ing against his former club for thefourth game in succession afterspending two years at Roots Hallduring which he managed to net justsix times in almost 60 appearances.

“It’s a bit of a surprise because Ihad a complete disaster when I washere as a player,” Harrold joked.

“I just seem to have a knack ofscoring when I come back here withanother club.”

Harrold will be hoping to add to

his recent tally when FleetwoodTown come to the Memorial Sta-dium next weekend to start a run ofgames that pits Rovers against threeof the sides that make up the topsix.

“We have a tough few games com-ing up; the sort you really have tore l i s h , ” Harrold said.

“Sometimes it can be better to playteams like Fleetwood because thepressure is a little less.

“That said, we put a lot of pressureon ourselves; you have to if you haveany aspirations of climbing the tableand being involved in and aroundthe play-offs.”

IF there had been any lingering un-certainty about how Andy Robinsonand Sean Holley want their Bristolside to play, the blueprint wasprovided in the opening 17 minutes atSt Peter.

Robinson and Holley’s vision forhow Bristol should be taking on op-ponents was rolled out, almost to atee, for the first half of the first half, asthey effectively put the game out ofJe r s e y ’s reach thanks to their paceand movement.

Bristol started at an incrediblespeed. Thanks to their high tempofrom the first whistle, they scoredthree early tries to lead 19-0. Jerseyappeared shell-shocked as RukiTipuna and Tristan Roberts pulledthe strings, keeping the hosts on theback foot for what must have been anextremely uncomfortable openingperiod for them.

Jersey had beaten Bedford in theirlast outing – but were blown away bya combination of Bristol’s physical-ity, invention and cutting edge. Forthose first 17 minutes, Bristol were asgood as they have been for a season ortwo – sharp, incisive, bold.

One problem with starting sobrightly, however, is that it creates anunrealistic expectation that the paceand fluency can be maintained for theremainder of the match – and, un-derstandably, Jersey clawed theirway back into the game, even if Bris-tol never looked like anything butv i c t o r s.

After their initial three-try burst, they added a fourth through RyanEdwards – after Tipuna’s opener andtwo from Roberts – to secure theirsecond straight try-scoring bonuspoint.

But, from a lead of 26-3, the finalscoreline shows that, while Bristolare improving, they are yet to find away to put sides to bed. Tipuna hit thenail on the head when he said theyare still striving to deliver a “killerbl ow ” to opponents.

But given this was only Robinson’seighth competitive game in charge –and Holley’s third with the club –Bristol were never going to be aspolished as they will need to be inMay and June.

High-tempo Bristol giveJersey a torrid opening

Jersey vs Bristol | St Peter’s, Saturday, September 28

This is a work in progress – even ifthe opening 17 minutes on Saturdaysuggested that progress is likely to besw i f t .

Director of rugby Robinson said:“I’m pleased with the way we startedthe game. I thought in the first 20minutes, to score the three tries andget the points on the board that wedid, was very pleasing.

“Jersey came back into the gameand they worked hard – and a lot ofsides wouldn’t have been able to getback into the game like that. Justafter half-time we scored anothergreat try – and I thought the move-ment of the ball, and the shape wehad, were very good.”

The game was not even twominutes old when Tipuna, who un-derlined Bristol’s attacking fearless-ness by tapping and going wheneverthe opportunity arose, started andfinished the move for the opening try.His quick tap was backed up withexcellent support from histeam-mates, and the scrum-half wentover from close range.

He was at it again five minutes later– tapping and going – and played inRoberts, who withstood the attemptsof a couple of Jersey players to halthim, and scored in the corner, too farwide to be able to convert his own try.Tipuna and Roberts combined againfor the third Bristol try, with the NewZealander chipping ahead, gettingthe bounce of the ball as he tussledwith a Jersey player, then hackingahead twice more, before findingRoberts – via Glen Townson – for asuperb try.

SteveExpert analysisCotton

“I saw a bit of space, put a grubberin, and we both had a nudge at the ball– and I came up with it,” said Tipuna.“There was some good support playfrom big GT – and Trist finished it off,so we’ve got numbers floodingthrough, which is the good thing.”

Bristol had started in such a re-lentless fashion that they were surelygoing to hit a wall at some stage. AsRobinson acknowledged: “I think wewere hanging quite a bit – the lungswere burning – in the second 20minutes of the first half, and we madea couple of errors.”

Iain Grieve saw yellow for takingout his opposite number at a line-out– but Jersey managed only threepoints while the flanker was off thefield.

Stearn strikes to seal it for BathBath City 2

Gosport Borough 0

DAVE Pratt’s first-half goal and a latesecond from substitute Ross Stearnsent Bath City through to the thirdqualifying round of the FA Cup.

Their first win over Gosport Bor-ough in four attempts – and £4,500 inprize money – was well deserved onthe basis of their first-half perform-ance, although there was some grow-ing anxiety before Stearn finallykilled the visitors off.

Following last weekend's dismalhome defeat to Dover, Bath headcoach Lee Howells made four changesto his starting XI and switched to a3-5-2 formation.

Out went Stearn, Ben Adelsbury,Noah Keats and Will Salmon, and incame Sekani Simpson and AaronBrown as wing-backs. Joe Burnellcame into midfield and striker ElliottChamberlain, who returned to Bathon loan from Exeter on Friday, partnered Pratt in attack.

Bath made a bright start, with Prattfiring into the side-netting fromSimpson's clever pass and Chamber-lain not quite able to fully connectwith a volley.

But the hosts did not have to waittoo long before their pressure paidoff. Andy Gallinagh launched a longball forward, which found Pratt inacres of space. His first shot was

brilliantly saved by Gareth Barfoot, but the City striker coolly steeredhome the rebound.

Bath should have doubled theirlead midway through the half whenGosport failed on numerous occa-sions to clear a corner and the balldropped to Dan Ball, who smashedhis volley over from eight yards.

Chamberlain also failed to makefull contact again from Josh Low'sinviting cross.

The visitors had to wait until the51st minute for their first attempt ofnote, with Andrew Forbes left un-marked at a free-kick, but volleyingagainst the crossbar.

Bath were not at the same level theywere in the first period, but had asniff of a chance midway through thehalf when visiting keeper Barfootfumbled the ball at Pratt's feet andwas grateful when the striker'ssecond touch knocked it back into hish a n d s.

Brown's through-ball then sentPratt into space, but his shot wascomfortably saved.

The inability to grab a killer secondgoal was starting to cause anxiety onthe terraces and another Bath changesaw Stearn come on for Low with tenminutes remaining.

And the substitute finally put thetie to bed with four minutes remain-ing. A mistake by full-back BrettPoate left Stearn with a clear sight ofgoal and he kept his nerve to lift theball over the advancing Barfoot.

shot was saved by Steve Oliver afterhe was played in by Ricky Hulbert.

However, the visitors went aheadjust prior to half-hour mark whenHowe bundled Joe Chandler off theball and went clear to beat goalkeeperMartin Horsell.

The home side responded after thebreak, with Oliver having to tip over aHulbert shot and James Harmerlobbing the ball just over the cross-b a r.

Midway through the second half, though, Haldane equalised for Townwhen he converted Harmer’s lowcross following an exchange of passeswith Ross Staley.

Yate snatched victory with timealmost up, as Harrison crossed intothe Bideford goalmouth and Harmermanaged to turn the ball beyond goal-keeper Oliver.

BRISTOL had gone into this win-ner-takes-all encounter insistingthey were in a no-lose situation.

The visitors were already guaran-teed at least runners-up spot in the FAWo m e n’s Super League and, con-sequently, a UEFA ChampionsLeague place next year.

Yet, you only had to look at theheartbroken expressions on the play-ers’ faces as they headed back to thevisitors’ dressing room following thefinal whistle to realise how much thisone-sided defeat had hurt the Vix-e n s.

Bristol went into the final game of aremarkable campaign unbeaten intheir previous six away matches –including a memorable 4-3 win atDoncaster in their previous outing, having fought back from three goalsd ow n .

But the challenge of overhauling apowerful and uncompromising Liv-erpool team proved too much, as theMerseyside outfit showed they werein no mood to relinquish top spot.

Uncharacteristically for a teamwho had netted 30 times in 13 WSLoutings, the Vixens rarely looked likefinding the net as Liverpool securedthe crown by a five-point margin, thanks to Louise Fors’ first-half pen-alty and a strike from KatrinOmarsdottir after the break.

At least the English domestic titlehas gone somewhere other thanArsenal for the first time in morethan a decade – and most neutralswould recognise that has to be a goodthing for the women’s game.

Bristol looked nervy over the open-ing stages as the home side settledbetter at the Halton Stadium inWidnes, and Bristol had a torridopening spell as Liverpool made haydown their left.

The Merseysiders’ 21-year-old Ger-man youth international NicoleRolser was their main instigator ofthat, setting up Fors with an earlychance which was pulled across theface of goal.

Rolser was soon threatening againwith a shot which bounced just infront of Bristol goalkeeper SiobhanChamberlain, and she then forced adiving save from the England inter-national after letting fly from the

corner of the box. Just after thehalf-hour, Rolser had another coupleof opportunities in the space of aminute, shooting just over the top andthen seeing Chamberlain fingertipanother attempt fractionally wide ofan upright.

But a Liverpool goal looked likecoming, and finally arrived nineminutes before the break following aquick free-kick down the left.

Alex Windell clipped Rolser justinside the box and, from the resultingpenalty, Fors fired the ball low intothe right-hand corner.

Bristol had created only twohalf-chances in the opening period –one following a corner from skipperCorinne Yorston which flew acrossthe face of goal, and the other along-range lob from Laura Del Riowhich drifted wide of an upright.

Although the visitors emergedbrighter in the second half, it was stillLiverpool who looked the more likelyto score.

Chamberlain almost spilled a56th-minute free-kick at Omarsdot-tir’s feet, but recovered in time tograb the ball at the second attempt.

Then, just after the hour, Dowiecompletely miskicked when presen-ted with a decent chance from theedge of the box, before heading an-other opening wide of the target asthe game moved into the final 20m i nu t e s.

Another fierce angled strike byRolser forced Chamberlain into ac-tion again, blocking at her near post. But when a long free-kick into Bris-tol’s box was chested down by Dowiefor Omarsdottir to crash home Liv-er pool’s second goal 11 minutes fromtime, the contest – and the season –were effectively over.Liverpool: Laws, Bronze, Bonner, Engen, Schroder(Easton 83), Fors (Gregorious 81), Omarsdottir, DaCosta, Williams (Holbrook 88), Rolser, Dowie. Buttner deniesUnited crisisDEFENDER Alexander Buttner in-sists there is no crisis at ManchesterUnited.

A troublesome start to DavidMoyes' tenure took a sharp downturnon Saturday as West Brom recordedtheir first win at Old Trafford since1978.

The 3-2 defeat was United's thirdloss in six Premier League games, representing their worst start to aleague campaign since 1989.

They have not scored a league goalin open play since their trip toSwansea on the first day of the cam-paign, have now fallen eight pointsbehind early pace-setters Arsenaland hover just three above the re-legation zone.

Bookmakers have delivered theirown verdict, shoving United out to 7-1fourth favourites to retain their titleand, on the odds alone, in a battlewith Tottenham even to qualify fornext season's Champions League.

It is a scarcely believable situationgiven United won the championshipby an incredible 11 points last term,Sir Alex Ferguson's final one incharge, and led to doubts being ex-pressed by some fans over Moyes'suitability as replacement.

Yet Buttner is adamant there is noneed to panic.

"I don't think it is a crisis," said theDutch defender. "Of course the crowdwant to see Manchester United win-ning – the players want that, too.

"We have lost games and if we losewe are not happy."

CELEBRATIONS were muted as Clif-ton stretched their 100 per cent recordto four outings to remain clear at thetop of National Two South on a dra-matic day at Clifton College.

The home side, playing in Cliftonfor the first time in their 141-yearhistory, were in complete controlleading 21-7 at the turnaround, strongin the set-piece and looking wellequipped wider out to kick on andwin with something to spare.

But the second period was a story ofmissed opportunities andedge-of-the-seat defending asnewly-promoted Stortford – c o a ch e dby former England hooker AndyLong – grew in stature and playedwith such confidence that the finalwhistle could not come quicklyenough for Clifton.

Home skipper Paul Fincken said:“We would have lost this game lastseason. We didn’t play well secondhalf, but we’ve learned from last year,we stuck at it and kept things to-g ether.

“If you had said to me at the start ofthe season ‘would you be happy withfour from four at the end of Septem-ber?’ then of course I would have saidyes. But today shows there’s stillplenty to work on.”

This might have been a completelydifferent game, but for an horrificinjury suffered by Stortford’s formerEngland Under-18 No 8 Charlie King-ham in the first quarter.

Clifton took instant advantage ofthe sin-binning of flanker Steve Ball-for an offence at the breakdown tograb the opening try, Fincken musc-ling over from a catch and drivemove, Charlie Foley converting.

Soon after, a second score appearedimminent as the rampant home sidehammered away again at the line, butthe match was then held up for 16minutes as Kingham suffered a dis-located hip in a tackle, after whichClifton lost virtually all momentumand control.

Dings pay theprice for a lastminute slip-up

DINGS were very unfortunate tocome away with just two bonus pointshaving been in front for most of thematch, outscored the home side sixtries to five and lead by six pointswith the 80 minutes up.

Bournemouth, who always lookeddangerous with the ball in hand, managed a converted try with thefinal play of the match to snatch theresult. Eleven tries between the twosides made for good viewing for thespectators in a match that for longperiods resembled a sevens affairwith neither side able to retain theball long enough to gain control.

Dings opened the scoring after fiveminutes when wing Ollie Reylandbundled over in the corner after a finemiss pass from stand-off Mitch Bur-ton.

Bournemouth replied with a dropgoal from full-back Ben Stevensonand took the lead on ten minutes witha penalty from stand-off Jack Met-t e r s.

The home side stretched their leadon 18 minutes with a try from halfwayfor Stevenson after Dings spilt theball.

Dings hit back straight from thekick-off with a try for flanker SamSteer after a brilliant catch from thekick-off by lock Jake Holcombe, whohad a very lively game, full-backMark Woodrow added the conversionfor 12-11 to Dings on 19 minutes.

Tries either side of half time, firstfrom scrum-half Steve Plummer, whogathered his own kick to score in thecorner and then from flanker MattLane, who seized on the dropped ballin his own half to sprint in for a try,saw Dings stretch their lead to 24-11five minutes into the second half.

The home side replied with twotries around the hour mark, firstfrom a poor clearance kick which thehome side ran back for hooker FrazerWilford to cross in the corner.

The second saw scrum-half SamHardcastle barge through threetackles to touch down, Metters addedone conversion to bring the score to24-23 to Dings.

The final quarter saw four tries.Dings, whose scrum was dominantall afternoon, forced a penalty try on68 minutes.

Four minutes later, the home sidehit back with a try for wing AlexS u t h e rl a n d .

Again Dings got a try direct fromthe restart when No 8 Mike Uren wonthe ball and centre Sheldon Stevensbroke through the middle to feedfellow centre Rob Dempsey for a tryout wide and a score of 36-30 to Dingswith just minutes left on the clock.Dings held on comfortably until thelast minute and could have scoredagain when Steer was held up close tothe try line, but the home side had thelast laugh when two tap penaltiestook them the length of the field forreplacement Joe Atkinson to scoreclose to the posts with the final playand Metters landed the conversion ftodraw the sides level.

The visitors had played attractivelyenough, retaining and recycling theball across the width of the pitchwithout ever really threatening. Butnow they started to find gaps andmake ground with Clifton strugglingto contain the urgent promptings ofreplacement scrum-half Sam Cole-man.

Good handling and patientbuild-up play was finally rewardedwith a try wide out for replacementRoss Bird soon after home flankerTom O’Keefe was carded for notrolling away.

And, with just six minutes of reg-ulation time remaining, flankerRichard Gill found an opening closeto the line for the visitors’ third try,Coleman converting off an upright toset up a tense finish.

Clifton resembled an exhaustedboxer on the ropes but dug in to slowdown the game, keep their defensiveshape and hang on for the tightest ofw i n s.

Premier League

LIVERPOOL forward Daniel Stur-ridge has refused to get carried awayby their strong start to the BarclaysPremier League season.

The Reds moved up to second in thestandings after a 3-1 win at man-agerless Sunderland, with Sturridgeopening the scoring before two goalsfrom Luis Suarez – either side ofEmanuele Giaccherini’s effort for theBlack Cats – sealing victory.

It was the Merseysiders’ fourth winin six league matches, but Sturridge, pictured, played down their hopes ofchallenging for the title.

He said: “It’s early days, take everyday as it comes. Don’t worry aboutthe future, worry about the here andn ow.

“I don’t think we played as well aswe could have in the first half, eventhough we were 2-0 up, but it was verydifficult in the second half.

“We took our foot off the pedal alittle bit and once they scored a goal itgot a bit more difficult for us but weheld on in the end.

some great players in this team andI’m happy to be playing with them.”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgerswas also delighted to have Suarezback in the fold.

The 26-year-old made his compet-itive return in the 1-0 Capital One Cupdefeat at Manchester United in mid-week, playing the entire 90 minutes.

While he drew a blank at Old Traf-ford, Suarez was a constant thorn inUnited’s side and underlined his im-portance to Liverpool’s cause with

his brace against Sunderland.“He’s getting the rewardfor his hard work over the

period that he was off. Ithought he was excel-lent the other night atOld Trafford,” Rodg erssaid.

was pleased Liverpool wereable to bounce back from their defeatto David Moyes’ men.

“We defended well towards the endof the game and then got a late goal, which killed it off.”

Sturridge opened the scoring incontroversial fashion, with the balltaking a heavy deflection off his armbefore nestling in the net.

The England man defended his ac-tions, however, adding: “It’s a greatball from Stevie, it’s gone over thedefender’s head and it was lastminute, I’ve obviously tried to head itbut I guess my heading’s not goodenough.

“The ball’s just gone inoff my arm, but I wouldn’tdo that on purpose.Sometimes thesethings happen.”

Suarez netted abrace on his firstPremier League out-ing since his ten-gameban and Sturridge be-lieves the Uruguayan’spresence can only help Liv-erpool this season.

H owso n ’s strikegives Hughtonwelcome relief

NORWICH boss Chris Hughtonhailed what he saw as a “big” and“thoroughly deserved” 1-0 BarclaysPremier League win for his side atStoke – although he admitted theymight have been lucky not to concedea second-half penalty.

Jonny Howson netted in the 34thminute at the Britannia Stadiumwith a strike from outside the box asthe Canaries took advantage of somesloppy play by their opponents.

Norwich had already hit the cross-bar through Ryan Bennett and weregood value for their lead, but theysurvived a nervous moment after thebreak when Leroy Fer appeared topull back Kenwyne Jones in the box, with no spot-kick being given.

Regarding the Jones incident, Ferconfessed after the game that he had“pulled his shirt a little bit”.

And when that was put to Hughton,he said: “He (Fer) is an honest lad!

“I have seen the incident, and yes, there is contact – I have to say, Ithought the lad (Jones) made a mealof it.

“But if it is something we have gotaway with, then I think we are dueone, as all Norwich supporters willtell you.”

The victory was Norwich’s secondin the league this season, giving themseven points from six games and mov-ing them up from 17th to 14th in thet abl e.

It was also only their secondtop-flight away win in 2013 – the otherbeing a 3-2 triumph at ManchesterCity in May – and Hughton said: “Ithink every win away from home is abig win, particularly for us, given wehave found it more difficult awayfrom home.

“I don’t think there is anyone whowould say different than we thor-oughly deserved it. It is a big lift.”

Norwich went on a considerablespending spree over the summer andthere had been talk in the build-up tothis contest of Hughton being undermajor pressure to get a positive resultagainst Stoke.

Asked about that, Hughton said: “Itcomes with the territory. If we aretalking about managers, there will benobody that puts them under morepressure than themselves, becausewe take every defeat heavily.”

Stoke manager Mark Hughes said:“We didn’t see that coming todaybecause we have been really good. That is the disappointment and themystery. I thought, heading into thegame, we were in good shape.

“We said at the beginning of theyear that on occasions this seasonthere would be days where we don’tget it right.”

into it was exceptional and to get thethree goals and maybe a few morechances to score a few more.

“I thought we were really danger-ous on the counter-attack and as ateam we worked really, really hard.”

The visitors took a two-goalhalf-time lead, which was a touchharsh on Sunderland, who had earli-er hit the bar through SebastianLarsson before Giaccherini pulled agoal back in the 52nd minute.

Try as they might, the Black Catscould not find an equaliser and wereundone by a counter-attack as Suarezclinched victory for Liverpool in theclosing stages.

“We spoke at half-time and Ithought you saw a great reaction. They gave it a really good go in thesecond half,” said Sunderland’s in-terim head coach Kevin Ball, whowas taking charge of his first PremierLeague match following Paolo DiCanio’s sacking last weekend.

“We took it right to the death butunfortunately you’re susceptible tothat counter-attack where 3-1 – and Id o n’t mean this as disrespect to Liv-erpool – flatters them a little bit.

“It was a shame because I thoughtthe lads had a real good go today andt h at ’s something we need to takeheart from.”

Foreign holidays always bring out the best in people – especially their golf scores

Bristol Rugby 2013-14The season so far . . .

I HAVE just returned from a trip toBenidorm in Spain, along with anumber of old pals.

We were celebrating the 50th birth-days of a couple of chaps who, back inthe day, were decent footballers atamateur level. Both Russell Crew andPaul Hemmings were team-mates to-gether at Highridge United, and onSunday mornings played for theKing’s Head pub, based in Bedmin-ster Down. These two were joined onthe trip by many ex-players from thelocal non-league soccer scene.

The fun and games started on ourarrival at Bristol Airport. One of thechaps in our party, Terry Hartigan, had never been on an aircraft before, and was very nervous as we made ourway to the check-in desk. He ap-

proached a member of staff and askedif she could answer a query he had.

Smiling, she said: “Certainly, howmay I help?” Anxiously, he asked,“This is my maiden flight, can you tellme where would you consider thesafest place to be seated on theplane?” With a reassuring gesture sheanswered: “Ideally sitting on the winghas been proven to be the best place

after extensive tests.” Terry looked ather horrified and said: “You must bejoking – c a n’t I sit inside theplane?!”

We had booked some tee times at acouple of golf courses on the outskirtsof Benidorm.

This is both Russell and Paul’s pre-ferred sport to participate in thesedays, especially if they can hire abuggy to help them get around. To behonest, I am quite surprised that Rus-sell hasn’t taken up golf profession-ally. I have played alongside him oncountless occasions, and have nevercome close to defeating him. Whenev-er there is a competition with prizemoney at stake, you can be sure aseggs are eggs that Russ will come outon top. The man is amazing, he will

hit a tee shot into the trees, find hisball, chip out into a water hazard, drop a shot, then find a bunker just offthe green, take a couple of putts andstill remarkably score a par four forthe hole. We honestly don’t know howhe does it! On reaching our hotel inBenidorm, a porter offered to showme to my room. I stopped in mytracks, and bellowed: “This room istiny, where is the TV and the mini bar,or even a window?” He replied: “T hisis the elevator sir.”

I was not sure if the receptionist atthe hotel either didn’t understand mecorrectly or was deliberately windingme up. I rang the reception from myroom and asked if I could have anearly morning call. She replied: “Cer-tainly, sir – cockadoodle do!”

It was obvious that both Russ andPaul had spent some of their birthdaymoney on new clothes for our littlebreak. I noticed that the designersname was Tommy Fullfigure!

I had quite a pleasant surprisewhen taking a seat on the aircraft forour return journey.

I spotted a couple of chaps MartinHagan and Kevin Regan, both oldschoolboy rugby team-mates of mineat St Bernadettes, who I haven’t seenfor nearly 40 years.

I was unsure they would recognizeme after all those years. Martinthough, looked at me and said:“Yo u ’re the chap who writes thecorny jokes in the paper”. I replied:“Sorry mate think you’ve got thewrong person!”
