The Downs League outfit were beaten finalists in 2005 and, after dispensing of their Bristol and Dis- trict first division opponents after an enthralling end-to-end en- counter, the happy visitors were setting their sights much higher. Player-boss David O’Sullivan said: “We feel as though we’ve beaten one of the best sides in the competition in a very good game. It’s always good to test yourselves against good teams from other leagues and it’s left us believing we can go all the way again.” Two-goal marksman Ollie Bend- all said: “Playing in the final at Almondsbury eight years ago was a memorable experience, despite the defeat, and we’d all love to go there again.” The duo were the first to acknow- ledge that Rangeworthy had played a full part in an absorbing spec- tacle, although it looked bleak for the hosts in the opening ten minutes when Lawes embarked on an all-out assault on their goal. Skipper Marcus Street fizzed a first-minute 25-yarder wide of tar- get and right-back Stephen Beazer went even closer with a cracking 30-yard left-foot strike that flew over Rangeworthy’s stand-in shot-stopper Brian Wilson and rattled the post. So, it was of little surprise 40 seconds later when the away side were ahead. Lively left-winger Mark Greenland picked out Bendall on the edge of the six-yard box and the forward evaded challenges by goalkeeper and defender before fir- ing the ball into the net. To their credit, Colin Luff ’s team rallied well and as the half wore on, so Rangeworthy became an increas- ing threat. Captain Ben Miles and Mark Richings, who was back from a lengthy broken-leg injury ab- sence, both blazed off-target at- tempts, while Paul Freeman did well under pressure to push away impressive youngster Joe Davies’ back-post header from Richings’ deep corner. With half-time fast approaching, Rangeworthy were back in busi- ness. Striker Jake Haynes caused havoc inside the Lawes area with a skilful run before being upended by Jon Burt, and Richings marked his return to action with a per- fectly-placed spot kick into the bot- tom left corner of the net. Rangeworthy had to survive some hairy moments at the start of the second period, not least when Brown contrived to slice Green- land’s delivery wide from bang in front of target. The visitors were made to pay when Jack Dorney’s good work out- side the area enabled Davies, sur- rounded by defenders, to shoot low across the goalkeeper and inside the far post to put the hosts ahead. A minute later, Bendall was per- fectly positioned in the centre of goal to meet Greenland’s centre with a powerful header past striker-by-trade Wilson into the net to restore parity for Lawes, much to Rangeworthy’s frustration. With the travelling team now in the ascendancy, it was Alex Sar- gent’s turn to squander a gilt-edged opportunity, somehow steering a header from point-blank range past the far post. But, with 13 minutes remaining, he was celebrating, along with his team-mates, a third Lawes goal. Substitute Pat Reilly had set things in motion with a surging run into the box and, while his shot was beaten on to the post by Wilson, and Bendall was unable to force home the rebound, Beazer drove the ball in from the right and Sargent was there to turn it over the line with a skilful finish from 12 yards out. Broken but unbowed, Range- worthy weren’t finished and, after Jake Haynes had darted on to Dav- ies through pass before stinging the hands of Freeman with a fierce attempt, they dramatically levelled the contest two minutes from time. Haynes again played a per- Rangeworthy 3 Lawes Juniors 3 fectly-weighted ball through to Richings on the run, and the left-sided midfielder planted an un- erring finish into the far corner of the net to make it 3-3 and take the tie to penalties. Things looked bleak straight away for Rangeworthy as O’Sul- livan and Sargent netted for Lawes, while Shae Mitchell saw his effort saved and the luckless Richings rattled the bar as the home side trailed 2-0. But they quickly hauled them- selves back into it as Bendall struck a post for Lawes and Reilly’s strike was brilliantly beaten away by the leaping Wilson, the scene set for Miles and Davies to tuck away their penalties for Rangeworthy to make it 2-2. It wasn’t to be for Luff ’s men, though, as Brown made no mistake with Lawes’ final ‘take’, while the usually-deadly Wilson, who had en- joyed a decent stint between the sticks, saw his effort well kept out by his opposite number Freeman for a match-winning save. Ashton Boys Wanderers celebrate another goal in their 11-1 win againstShire Colts

FOUR goals from Jaheim Stewartand a devastating performance byTom Green helped Ashton Boys over-whelm Shire Colts, who concededeight times in the final 20 minutes.

Travelling Wanderers beganbrightly with Alfie Preece, then Stew-art, firing narrowly wide, beforeStewart forced Shire keeper MattSimpson into a good save with adrilled shot after a neat one-two withG re e n .

Despite the early pressure fromAshton, the Shire defence of AtreyaRamanan, Sam O’Toole and LoganBurns stood firm, and 20 minutes intheir side hit the target for the firstt i m e.

Harry Simpson jinked his way intothe box from the right, but his effortfrom a tight angle was well stopped byDylan Wellington, who batted it be-hind.

The resulting corner was superblywhipped in by Simpson and, as nodefender attacked it, the ball made itsway to the back post where it wasthumped into the roof of the net fromfour yards out by Jonathan Radford, giving the home side a 1-0 leadagainst the run of play.

Ashton responded instantly, withStewart unleashing a vicious shotfrom the edge of the box a minutelater, but keeper Simpson just man-aged to get fingertips to the effort todivert it on to the bar.

Some five minutes after falling be-hind, Ashton equalised.

Stewart won possession on the leftand showed great strength to hold offtwo defenders before sliding it insideto Green, who darted past his manbefore prodding the ball with hisright foot between Simpson and thenear post.

Two minutes later, the visitorsstormed into the lead when Greenslipped a beautifully weightedthrough ball into the path of Preece, who had timed his run between thetwo defenders perfectly.

Preece took the ball calmly aroundSimpson before coolly tucking it intothe unmanned goal.

Ashton got the second half under-way and within 20 seconds they haddoubled their one-goal advantage.

Green picked up the loose ball deepinside the Shire half, neatly shiftinghis feet and dropping his shoulder tobeat his man as he came inside on tohis right foot before releasing CharlieSanders with a sublime reverse pass, and the winger simply slotted the ballpast Simpson at the near post.

Shire then came forward as Rad-ford found Louis Mullen inside thebox to the left from a throw-in, andalthough he managed to turn and geta shot away, Mullen’s effort wastipped wide of the far post by Wel-lington, just out of the reach of AmirFarooq who was steaming in at theback post.

The first ten minutes of the secondhalf looked a much more even affairas both sides offered an attackingthreat, but while Green looked dan-gerous every time he got the ball,

Shire struggled to break down theAshton defence of LindenKirby-Smith, Matthew Pearce andEthan Wall.

However, 11 minutes in, Shire con-ceded for a fourth goal. As Greenchased a long punt upfield from Wel-lington, keeper Simpson called forthe ball and the back-tracking Burnslistened and got out of the way of hist e a m - m at e.

A slight hesitation by Simpson al-lowed Green to beat him to the balland, with the net at his mercy, Greenwas accidently tripped from behindby Burns as the defender tried des-perately to chase him down. The ref-eree awarded a penalty, which wasdispatched confidently by Preece tomake it 4-1.

Ashton soon added a fifth goalwhen Green burst down the left mid-way through the second half, drivingto the by-line beyond two defendersbefore cutting the ball back for BillyJack to tuck home from three yards

out, making it a hat-trick of assists forG re e n .

Preece then had two good chancesto complete a treble of his own, oncewhen he was found by Green fol-lowing another superb run from theattacker, a bobble sending his effortlooping into Simpson’s arms, andthen he just failed to find the target ashe attempted to lift Pearce’s throughball past the keeper.

As the pressure mounted, the Shiredefence completely disintegrated,Stewart making it 6-1 with a follow-upfinish after his initial 20-yard shotwas well saved by the strandedSimpson.

This signalled the opening of thefloodgates as Ashton found the net afurther five times in the final sevenminutes. Stewart struck the seventh, tucking home the rebound afterSimpson produced anotherhigh-class save to deny Preece, andthen the big midfielder completed hishat-trick of rebounds, following in

after Sanders almost squeezed theball past Simpson to make it 8-1.

Fletcher made it 9-1 with a coolfinish three minutes from time beforehe then turned provider, findingGreen from the right who took Ash-ton to double figures after Simpsonstopped his initial effort with a bril-liant save.

Fifteen seconds later, Green flickedHarry Lewis’ whipped cross beyondthe onrushing Simpson into the pathof Stewart, who simply rolled the ballinto the empty net to make it 11-1.And it was almost 12-1 right at thedeath but Green’s 20-yard attempt, which had Simpson beaten all endsup, thumped the crossbar anddropped just the wrong side of thegoal.Shire Colts: Matt Simpson, Atreya Ramanan, LouisMullen, George Levy, Jonathan Radford, HarrySimpson, Sam O’Toole, Ted Short, Jay Wellesley,Amir Farooq, Logan BurnsAshton Boys Wanderers: Dylan Wellington, HarryLewis, Linden Kirby-Smith, Matthew Pearce, EthanWall, Billy Jack, Jaheim Stewart, Charlie Sanders,Will Fletcher, Tom Green, Alfie Preece
