After the sides had entered the interval at a cool and damp Coombe Dingle in a goalless deadlock, the 27-year-old postman, introduced to the fray eight minutes into the second period, provided the spark to finally end Rangers’ winless league streak. In a competitive and enjoyable contest, lacking clear-cut opportun- ities and a killer instinct, Budding showed genuine class by seizing on a defensive mistake 14 minutes from time before calmly finishing for the game’s only goal. Rockleaze did have to weather an anxious final few minutes before celebrating the three points, much to the relief of manager Dave John- son, a close-season replacement for the watching Carmelo Micciche, who said: “That was a good 90-minute performance by the boys and it’s been coming; we’ve shown in fits and bursts that we’re capable of that without finding the con- sistency. “It was Shane’s first game back after a stomach injury he picked up at the end of last season, and he was massive for us. As a team, we know we have what it takes to compete strongly again this season.” Rangers weren’t helped by the fact key midfielder Nathan Bryer was unavailable through work com- mitments, but they demonstrated plenty of heart in and around the engine room. Ed Freeman, in par- ticular, was often a threat, getting in two early strikes, which were saved by George Hale and hacked off the line by experienced defender Paul Dempsey, respectively. At the other end, Sodbury, their assistant boss Richard Bisp at the helm in the absence of manager Scott Gibson, were irked that ref- eree Brian Lee opted not to award them a penalty when left winger Kyle Ford sprinted on to a raking crossfield pass by Mike England and cut inside his man, before ap- pearing to be tripped inside the area by Rangers right-back Ben Lear as he shaped to shoot. Penalty appeals fell on deaf ears, too, at the other end, as burly for- ward Oshane West, returning from a long injury lay-off, powered through several Sodbury chal- lenges before being brought to ground. The ball ran loose to Iggy Garcia, who thrashed his shot well wide of the target. Rockleaze had ridden their luck in the fledgling stages, when centre-back Savas Frangoullis in- advertently headed a Sodbury cross straight into his surprised goal- keeper’s clutches, but they were certainly unfortunate not to snatch a 32nd-minute lead. Freeman, who moments earlier had nodded a Rich Bray corner only just over the top, motored through a gap in midfield and as the ball arrived at the feet of West on the edge of the penalty area, the marks- man drilled a fierce angled attempt a fraction over the angle of far upright and bar. With Budding an early second-half introduction for West for Rockleaze, and Luke Maby join- ing the fray for Sodbury as a re- placement for right-back Reese, the second half took time to warm up, although it remained an absorbing affair. Budding had already shaved the crossbar with a header from a corner, a stern warning as to what was to follow because on the hour mark he sent a magnificent dipping free-kick around the visitors’ wall from 25 yards out, which crashed against the base of the same post. Rockleaze Rangers 1 Chipping Sodbury 0 He was getting closer and 14 minutes from the end he got his reward. Freeman, who had just smashed a rising 30-yard thunder- bolt whistling a fraction above the bar, had tried to pick the nippy forward out with a pass, which was initially intercepted by Sodbury skipper Lloyd Harding. However, as the defender tried to come away with the ball, he was robbed by his alert opponent, who sped unop- posed towards goal and coolly evaded the advancing Hale, before finding an inviting net with a simple finish. Rockleaze lived on their nerves a little in the closing stages, although their goalkeeper Burgess, who had produced a magnificent diving save to prevent Alex Fox’s searing strike flying past him, was largely un- troubled. One late alarm did have Rangers’ hearts in mouths when Fox’s head- er from Dan Bendall’s cross dropped narrowly adrift of the post, but they managed to cling on to the slender advantage, to their evident delight on the final whistle. TWO goals from Louis Britton and adisallowed effort right at the deathmade for an interesting opening-dayencounter that went right down to thewire, with AEK Boco hanging on forall three points as they won 2-1.

After kicking off, and with lessthan two minutes of the new seasonplayed, Boco found themselves a goalto the good. Louis Britton made adarting run towards the front postwhere he met Jake Cleverley’swhipped inswinging corner with thesweetest of volleys, his right bootsending the ball flying over the headof Downend keeper George Richardsand into the back of the net.

Boco almost doubled their lead sixminutes later when Cleverley againswung in a dangerous cross, this timefrom the left, and although he failedto connect properly with the ball,team-mate Charlie Evans managed topoke it past Richards.

However, he was denied not once, but twice, by Dylan Evans, who firstpoked the ball off the line beforejumping back to his feet to deny theBoco man a second time from just acouple of yards out with a superb, brave block.

D ow n e n d ’s first sight of goal camein the eleventh minute when ascuffed goal-kick saw the ball fallkindly for striker Cato Dacres on theedge of the box but, although he man-aged to lift the ball up over the stran-ded Vince Barber, his effort droppedjust wide.

Eight minutes later, the visitorshad an even better chance to level thescore when Charlie Perret did ex-tremely well to hold off a challengefrom Ethan Thomas and find Dacresfrom the right. Dacres could haveshot himself but instead unselfishlydrew the only remaining defendertowards him before squaring the ballto Nicky Shine.

However, ten yards out and in themiddle of the goal, Shine dallied just alittle too long on the ball which al-lowed Barber to charge out and blockShine’s rushed effort with his legs, denying Downend what should havebeen a certain equaliser.

Downend were starting to get ontop and, with eight minutes to go inthe half, they deservedly pulled level.Perret received the ball with his backto goal on the edge of the Boco boxand, with little else on, he majestic-ally rolled his marker before firingthe ball low across goal, beyond thesprawling Barber and into the farcor ner.

Debutants George Pool, JamesFord, Tom Martin and Joe Osbourneall hit the target, with Mickey Par-sons and Scott Harvey completingthe ’Phones scoring.

Brandon Pike and Sam Ford scoredthe visitors’ consolation goals.

Old Cothamians ran out 6-3 win-ners over Longwell Green thanks toa three-goal scoring spree in the finalfew minutes.

Josh Uhlyk helped the hosts ontheir way with a hat-trick, whileKeanan Mitchard, Wes Rogers andScott Laity were also on target. TomBishton, Ben Adams and Adam Thur-ston strikes ensured Longwell werealways in with a fighting chance.

Meanwhile, Cribbs FC paid theprice for a lacklustre and disjointedperformance with a surprise 3-1 Bris-tol North defeat away against Thor n-bury Town.

In an even first half, Cribbs fieldingfour debutants, took the lead throughTamas Elias, who was on hand toround off a smart passing move in-volving most of his midfield.

Elias then had a second smart fin-ish unluckily disallowed for offside, while at the other end good defendingby Matt Baker and Dan Bishop keptthe score at 1-0.

In the second half, Town fortuit-ously drew level when a back passbobbled over the foot of Cribbs keeperRory Smith and left an empty net forMike Topp to tap in for Thornbury.

That signalled a change in mo-mentum as Town continued to pressforward and they deservedly took the

Portishead start with a victoryPORTISHEAD Town JuniorsU n d e r- 1 5 s kicked off the new firstdivision season in fine style as fournew recruits helped them to a 4-2home victory over a robust Wi n s -combe team.

Sam Cosway, one such debutant, fastened on to a cross by fellownew-boy Janzen Rosevear to beat thekeeper with a fine finish on 15m i nu t e s.

Luke Osgood and Tyler Ashmeadcombined on 30 minutes for the latterto net well for the second goal, whileanother newcomer, Joe Root, almostmade it 3-0 when a 25-yard piledriverwas pushed around the post by theWinscombe keeper.

However, 15 minutes into thesecond half man-of-the-match AlexTwig gs’ corner was confidentlyheaded home by Cosway for hissecond.

Winscombe hit back by scoring dir-ect from a corner before Osgoodchased a great ball from Ash Leathemat the other end to finish well into thebottom corner for Town’s fourth.

Portishead were caught out againby a long, direct ball near the end, asWinscombe reduced the arrearsagain, but solid defending and keep-ing by Will Bennet, James Robinson,Oscar Todd, Joe Rout, Kalan Bart-lett-Azad and Callum Jones saw themsafely over the line.

2 The number of minutes on theclock when Louis Britton openedthe scoring for AEK Boco

lead not long after when George Wes-ton whipped in a superb free-kickfrom the right with his left foot, butnone of his teammates attacked theball and, much to Boco’s relief, itbounced just wide of the far post afterflashing across the face of goal.

At the other end, Boco came evencloser with a dead ball effort. From 25yards out to the right of the goalBritton got the ball up and over thewall and, with Richards beaten, itlooked a certain goal, but the balld i d n’t quite dip enough and the su-perb strike thundered into the cross-bar before bouncing away.

Boco had started brightly, howeveras the half progressed Downend grewinto the game as Jake Millward andcaptain Aidan Sanfelice started totake control of the midfield and thevisitors, who enjoyed the lion’s shareof possession and territory, looked

the more threatening team by thehalf-time whistle.

Boco started the second half wellwith Zac Cheetham firing over frominside the box after being found byBritton, before the same playerlatched onto a poor defensive clear-ance but could only volley over from12 yards out.

These were the only sights of goalfor either side in the opening 15minutes of the second half as thegame turned scrappy, with neitherside able to retain possession for longenough to carve the oppositionopen.

The defences were definitely on topat this stage with Ewan McMillan,Evans, Weston and, in particular,Samuel Lacey looking solid at theback for Downend, while Thomas,Charlie Richards, Dan Jordan andJack Holbrook were doing an equally

good job at the back for Boco. Afterthe lull, Downend then had two goodchances in quick succession. Thefirst came 16 minutes in when Perretread McMillan’s header over the Bocodefence and, charging through, man-aged to beat the advancing Barber tothe ball but, at close quarters, theDownend goalscorer could only findthe brave keeper’s bread basket andBarber managed to hang onto theball.

Two minutes later, Perret was re-leased in behind again, but this time, with Jordan on his shoulder, thestriker hesitated in pulling the trig-ger, allowing Barber to dart out andsmother the ball at his feet.

The game seemed destined to be adraw with neither side looking par-ticularly threatening but, with 25minutes on the clock, Boco werepresented with a golden opportunity

when the referee deemed thatCheetham was brought down by Mc-Millan after the striker had latchedonto Britton’s header inside theDownend box.

With the pressure on, Brittonstepped up to take the spot-kick andcalmly stroked the ball into the bot-tom right corner of the goal, pastRichards who remained rooted to thespot. The goal doubled Britton’s per-sonal tally and left the visitors withless than ten minutes to equalise for asecond time.

With just two minutes to go Down-end’s Shine burst down the rightwing before threading the ball intothe path of Dacres but, from just eightyards out, the striker failed to prodthe ball past Barber who blocked itwith his legs, much to the home side’sre l i e f.

Then controversy struck two

minutes later when, following aDownend corner, the referee blew forfull time just as the ball was deliveredback into the Boco box, where it washeaded into the goal by a Downendplayer. The whistle clearly went asthe ball was in the air, but that didnothing to dampen the anger andfrustration felt by the Downend play-ers and supporters.

Overall a draw would probablyhave been a fair result for twoevenly-matched teams, but Downendwere left to rue a number of missedoppor tunities.AEK Boco: Vince Barber, Charlie Passco, CharlieRichards, Dan Jordan, Ethan Thomas, BillyHensler, Louis Howard, Louis Britton, JakeCleverley, Jack Holbrook, Ellis Kow, MasonHawkins, Charlie Evans, Zac Cheetham.Downend Saints: George Richards, DanielAdamson, Samuel Lacey, Ewan McMillan, DylanEvans, Dan Harrison, Aidan Sanfelice, JakeMillward, Nicky Shine, Charlie Perret, CatoDacres, Alfie Hargreaves, George Weston.

Their Romans hosts took early con-trol and despite a fine save fromKieran Bess, and a goal-line clear-ance by Owen Humphries, they even-tually took the lead.

Mangos fought back determinedlyin the second half and the pressurepaid off as Ryan Evans equalisedfollowing great set-up play by AaronJo n e s.

The visitors continued to pushforward with good attempts byJoel Cassar and Aaron Hudd, before Jones struck to giveMangos the lead with along-range free-kick.

Bath pressed hard for anequaliser, but they werekept out by fine defendingfrom Kieran Murray,Humphries, Luke Bailey andKieran Joseph.

Almondsbury SaintsU n d e r- 1 2 s got their Division Onecampaign underway in fine style.Having clinched the Hanham MinorLeague title with an undefeated re-cord last season, Saints enjoyed aconvincing 3-0 opening-day home winover D e e r swo o d .

Sam Bird, switched to a centralmidfield role by the managementteam, capped an outstanding displaywith two firm strikes in the first half. His first arrived in the opening fiveminutes after good work by JamesWhite and Ben Lloyd. Then, beforethe break he was sent through via afine ball from Ellis Richards to grabhis second.

Saints controlled the second halfwith Marshall Bamford and HarrisonNeil commanding at the back, wellsupported by keeper Charlie Smith, while the win was wrapped up byArchie Parry, who snapped up anopportunity after a Finlay Coombseffort was well saved.

In Division Four, man-of-the-matchJaiden Holver pulled the strings andKieran Becker put in an exceptionalperformance in defence as Mang ots-field Colts Under-12s swept to acomfortable 4-1 victory over a spir-ited Rockleaze Colts’ s i d e.

Aayush Seegum opened the scor-ing, converting Holver’s corner, andthen added a second with a fine soloef fort.

Rockleaze pulled a goal back with a

splendid long-range effort, but athunderbolt from Curtis Molton re-stored Mangotsfield’s two-goal ad-vanta g e.

Jack Smith capped a superb Man-gos debut with the fourth goal as theycruised to a worthy win.

Promoted Broadwalk Under-13s,savouring their first taste of DivisionOne action, produced a surprisinglydominant display and 3-0 away suc-cess over a rugged War mleyRang ers s i d e.

It was all Broadwalk to start with, although they overcame a real scarewhen Warmley’s first meaningful at-tack led to the away keeper mis-judging a bouncing ball beforebringing down the Rangers strikerinside the area.

To the goalie’s relief the resultingspot-kick was struck tamely wide.

After that near miss it was allBroadwalk and a great Lewis Nealethrough ball sent Thomas Morfitisaway to give the home keeper nochance with a firm finish.

After the break, Mitchell Sullystepped up to hit an unstoppable35-yard free-kick in off the undersideof the bar before Neale rifled in acracking free-kick of his own, givingthe Warmley keeper no chance as theball rocketed into the top corner ofthe net.

Broadwalk star player Cody Vileswitched from the front line to a

left-back berth and enjoyed anoutstanding game to exem-

plify an impressive teamd i s p l ay.

Stoke LaneU n d e r- 1 3 s got theirDivision Four cam-paign off to an ex-cellent start with animpressive 5-0 win

over Hanham Ath-letic. Henry Birt pro-

duced three pin-pointcorners in the first half

which resulted in a pair for HarveyLewis and a headed goal from com-manding defender Finlay Wilson.

Tyler Gaston made it 4-0 just beforehalf-time and while Hanham battledwell in the second period, they wereunable to prevent a fifth goal goingpast them courtesy of Ethan Ansell’sef fort.

It was a splendid all-round per-formance from Lane, withman-of-the-match Birt instrumentalin their midfield.

Meanwhile, Jason Cotterill washappy to have safely bagged threepoints courtesy of HallenU n d e r- 1 4 s ’ 1-0 win over travellingBristol City JSC.

But the home boss admitted histeam will have to perform “m u chbetter” if they are to challenge hardfor honours this term, even thoughthey began their first division fixturewell enough, taking an early leadwhen Sam Hilton’s pin-pointfree-kick was tapped in at the far postby Luke Spokes.

Despite looking strong at the backHallen created only a handful ofchances at the other end, due largelyto City’s hard work and determin-ation, although star man Elliot Gard-ner was a constant threat for thehosts. On another day he wouldsurely have scored as he was deniedby an in-form City keeper on morethan one occasion.

Downend could then have taken the

BRISTOL Telephones got theirBristol South campaign off to a flierwith a 7-2 success against CadburyH e at h .

Billy Jones had been Telephones’only first-half marksman with a pen-alty as the sides turned around at theinterval locked at 1-1. But a suddenfive-goal flurry inside the opening 15minutes of the second half changedeverything and set the home teamfirmly on their way.
