SCOTT Wagstaff is adamant BristolCity will be celebrating their firstleague win of the season next timeout – provided fortune favours thebrave Robins battlers.

City’s latest attempt to claim amaiden league victory saw themheld 1-1 – and they were held – byGillingham on Saturday.

Wagstaff played a key role in Cityresponding to Adebayo Akinfenwa’sheaded opener as he delivered a pin-point cross for Marvin Elliott, ar-riving late, to power home.

However, City couldn’t find a waypast in-form Gillingham keeper Stu-art Nelson thereafter, notching up 20

shots, but with only Elliott’s effortfinding the net.

City’s next league fixture seesthem welcome Peterborough, the di-v i s i o n’s third highest goal-scorers –who smashed six past Reading in theCapital One Cup second round.

That isn’t until September 14 dueto the international break, but Wag-staff believes more of the same willsee City break their duck.

“In the second half, I felt that welooked lively and energetic,” saidWagstaff, who scored the winner inCity’s Capital One Cup upset againstCrystal Palace in the week.

“I think we’ve been improving

game in, game out in the league. We ’re a new group with lots of youngplayers, so we’re still trying to gelto gether.

“The performances recently, espe-cially against Palace, showed thatwe ’re getting better, and it’s not fall-ing for us at the minute.

“It was frustrating against Gill-ingham. I thought we played reallywell in the second half, and it justd i d n’t fall for us in the end. I think weshould have come away with thethree points.

“Sometimes it happens that way infootball, but at least we know we’recreating chances. If we keep doing

that, we will start putting them awaysoon.

“The boys are brilliant, we’re allsimilar ages and I know we’re goingto get that win sooner rather thanl at e r.

“I think we’ve playing well in boththe cup and league, it’s just thatwe ’ve been winning games in thecup. We’ve got to stick with it, know-ing that three points will come even-tually. The fans were brilliant, theyclapped us off at the end and we needthem to stay behind us. The soonerwe get that league win, the moreconfident we will become.”

Of course, before the Robins can

turn their attentions to Peterbor-ough, they have the small matter of aJo h n s t o n e ’s Paint Trophy clash withcity rivals Rovers on Wednesday.

And Wagstaff, who arrived on a freefrom Charlton at the end of last sea-son, is relishing the chance to get oneover on the League Two side.

“I’ve played in a few derby gamesbefore, like Charlton-Millwall, butI’ve heard this one is a massive one,”he added.

“I’m really looking forward to it.We know we’ve got to do it for thefans. They’ll make a lot of noise, andhopefully we’ll get them the resultthey want.”

9 Scott Wagstaff: Delivery for equaliser wassuperb, caused Gillingham problems all day

THE omens were there as Bristol Cityreturned to Gillingham looking fortheir first league win of the season –but they weren’t realised as StuartNelson played the role of Damien.

After a 2-2 draw at home to Brad-ford on the opening day of the season,City headed to Priestfield to play theGills in the Capital One Cup.

City ran out 2-0 winners, but sincethat Tuesday night had failed to bothkeep a clean sheet and win in theleague in three games – so whatwould a return to Priestfield offer?

Could Sean O’Driscoll’s troopscarry on from where they left off intheir shock Capital One Cup upsetagainst Premier League CrystalPa l a c e ?

The answer was no – however, hadit not been for Gillingham keeperNelson, City would have been bomb-ing back around the M25 and downthe M4 with a spring in their step.

Despite it taking an Adebayo Ak-infenwa goal from a monstrousCharlie Lee throw-in to lift City, theystill deserved to win once MarvinElliott had equalised.

Sam Baldock in particular will begrateful that, having now played Gill-ingham twice in a month they don’tface off again until March – such didNelson keep him at bay.

Two saves stand out, both in thesecond half – Nelson swinging an armat a shot across goal and, towards thedeath, thwarting his free-kick whenclearly blinded by his wall.

However, City can take comfortfrom their second-half performance, and that Gillingham themselves arewithout a win the league.

Gillingham got off to a quick startwith Akinfenwa causing the City de-fence problems and Lee taking theopportunity to get his eye in with afew shots at goal.

For all the home side’s pace, it wassome quick thinking from front-manBaldock that almost put City ahead, the 24-year-old making Nelson sweatwith an intuitive free-kick.

Catching the eye – and approval – ofreferee Mick Russell, who would laterbe replaced by Barry Holdernessafter suffering a groin strain, Bal-d o ck ’s quick effort drifted narrowlywide with 20 minutes on the clock.

But it had been the hosts’ half, andthey were soon rewarded when Lee’slong throw almost reached the

six-yard box and Akinfenwa glanceda header past Frank Fielding.

City’s fortunes in the Gills box wereimproving, though, with Bobby Reidhaving a sweetly-struck half-volleyblocked by Adam Barrett and GregCunningham forcing Nelson into afirst save of the afternoon.

In between, Danny Kedwell had thebeating of Cunningham from a MylesWeston cross but his header skimmedthe post, although Fielding had hishands up to say he had it covered.

Marlon Pack then tried his luckfrom long range, but that was com-fortable enough for Nelson, beforeturning provider for Jay Em-manuel-Thomas to have a shot atbeating the Gillingham keeper.

He controlled well but was quicklycharged down by Michael Harriman, who took the sting out of his shot withNelson easily sweeping up.

As trademark as Gillingham’s goalwas, the manner of City’s equaliserwas also typical, with midfielder El-liott latching on to a cross into the boxand powering a header home.

Scott Wagstaff took his time to curla ball to the far post and Elliott, arriving on to the delivery late, placed his header across Nelson andinto the bottom corner on the strokeof half-time.

It was akin to his effort in the 5-4

loss at Coventry, albeit that was avolley, and it gave City the mo-mentum that they took into the firstminutes of the second half as theypeppered the Gillingham defence.

Nelson had to be sharp to denyEmmanuel-Thomas, while from theresulting corner Aden Flint foundhimself well positioned but couldn’tdirect his header on target and tookhis frustration out on the advertisingb o a rd s.

City didn’t let up and Nelson onceagain saved well from Reid, who shotat the near post when perhaps Bal-dock was better positioned, beforeGills boss Martin Allen decided toring the changes.

Off came Akinfenwa, his impetushaving died down significantly, forCody McDonald, who immediatelywent close, and Weston left the field, with Danny Hollands his replace-ment.

Still it was City on top, and Wag-staff took full advantage of slack playon Gillingham’s left before cuttingback perfectly for Baldock but, withNelson scrambling, he scuffed hisshot and it was cleared away.

Former England internationalNicky Shorey, who signed ashort-term deal in the week, was senton in the 60th minute for Reid andalmost made the perfect start with hissecond touch of the ball.

A long throw from Em-manuel-Thomas hit the back of Bal-d o ck ’s head as he turned and it fellperfectly for Shorey. However, on hisless favoured right foot, he sent hiseffort over the crossbar.

Then came Nelson’s wonders todeny Baldock – the second from afree-kick that Shorey had earnedafter a driving run. No win but, onthis performance, surely it won’t betoo long before one comes.

AFTER our midweek CapitalOne Cup performance againstPremier League Crystal Palaceit’s hard to believe we sit 20th inLeague One, still searching forour first league win. I thoughtthe team were excellent againstIan Holloway’s side, and wemore than deserved the win. Weplayed the better football, scoredtwo very good goals and defen-ded solidly.

I was particularly impressedwith Eliot Parish in goal. Theyoungster looked very composedand his kicking was excellent. The other stand-out playerswere Bobby Reid and Joe Bryan. Both are products of theacademy and are the key to thecl u b ’s future. Reid ran his socksoff and was always available forthe ball. Joe Bryan is a composedfootballer and has a great leftfoot. I’m not sure I’ve seen thesame quality of delivery whenon the run from the left-handside since Brian Tinnion in hispomp. It was a shame that Bryanpicked up an injury late on.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas andSam Baldock linked up well, with Jet scoring a fine goal. Theformer Ipswich and Arsenal for-ward was a real handful.

The win on Tuesday shouldhave given the team the con-fidence to go to Gillingham andgrab that important first leaguewin of the season. Unfortunately, our first-half performance wasnot good enough. We allowed theGills to score a cheap goal andd i d n’t get going.

We are struggling to put in aperformance over 90 minutes. The stats at the end of the gameshowed that City had 60 per centpossession and 20 shots at goal, with seven on target. Gilling-ham had a physical presence, but we really should have comeaway with all three points. SamBaldock missed his kick whenhe seemed destined to score aftera great cut back from Scott Wag-staff, and then saw the Gilling-ham number one pull off anumber of fine saves.

We have some very youngplayers, and they will struggle toperform week-in and week-outfor 90 minutes. I think there aresome very good signs, and someof the football has been excel-lent. We have arguably been thebetter team in all three of ourdraws, but our failure to makethe most of some good oppor-tunities and then a tendency toshoot ourselves in the foot at theback has cost us. You have afeeling that if we start gameswith a better tempo we can give aside a real hammering.

The transfer window closestoday and whilst we can’t throwthousands at it, we do need to tryto sign one or two players andinvest some of the money thatwill have come in following thesales of Steven Davies and Al-bert Adomah. Nicky Shorey isan excellent signing and willprovide competition on theleft-hand side, and we need to dothe same for the right. We alsoneed more competition up front.Hopefully Sean O’Driscoll cando something.

THE fine margins between footballsuccess and failure were probablynone more so evident than whenwatching the ball ricochet off the postfollowing Northampton winger ChrisH a cke t t ’s attempt to convert a directfree-kick in the final minute at theMemorial Stadium on Saturday.

That the ball deflected away tosafety instead of creeping inside thepost meant Bristol Rovers supporterswould have woken yesterday har-bouring a more positive outlook ontheir side’s start to the season.

The three points, which securedback-to-back victories, moved Roverson to seven after their opening fiveleague games – a tally not to bescoffed at when the well-documentedinjury problems are considered.

Things are looking a lot brighterthan they did when manager JohnWard trooped off the pitch at RodneyParade a fortnight ago to reprimand ateam that had managed just one pointfrom their first three games.

A flea in the ear seems not to havedone the players any harm if a max-imum points haul from the followingtwo games is anything to go by – eve nif they made hard work of securingvictory over ten-man York City beforebeing the beneficiaries of some clue-less refereeing on Saturday.

That said, with a squad of playerswilling to work as hard as the ones atRovers do consistently, neither vic-tory should be attributed to luck.

Perhaps Rovers’ improvement canbe, in part, explained by the returnsfrom injury of several senior players. Is it coincidence Garry Kenneth’sreturn to the bench has coincidedwith the back five re-finding the formthat was responsible for dragging theteam clear of relegation last season?

That Matt Gill, Matt Harrold andRyan Brunt are to be joined in thesquad by the likes of Ollie Clarke, JimPaterson and Seanan Clucas over thenext few weeks should guarantee fur-ther improvement after an openingmonth of the season during whichWard has been forced to call on anumber of boys to carry out a jobmore suited to that of men.

“This was Tom’s day,” Ward saidafter watching the 18-year-old raisehis stock even further by scoring hisfirst senior goal. The second-minutestrike to convert Lee Brown’s crossoff his head at the back post to add thefinishing touch to a move the man-ager described as one of “real qual-ity” proved to be decisive

Ward was just as pleased with theway Lockyer cleared from under hisown crossbar to deny Northamptonstriker Clive Platt an opportunity toscore an equaliser towards the end ofthe first half.

Lockyer was not the only one toemerge with credit from a game dur-ing which Rovers were required toshow some defensive resilience.

Michael Smith was probably thepick of the back four; swarming allover dangerous winger Ishmel De-montagnac in an ultimately success-ful attempt to prevent him fromgetting the chance to turn and get theball out of his feet to exploit wideopen spaces down the left flank.

It was an individual display thatperhaps best encapsulated the overallteam effort, although Mark McChrys-tal also merits mention for some as-tute positional play to anticipate andsnuff out Northampton before theyhad the opportunity to penetrate.

were met with an in-form Steve Mild-enhall, who made one fine reflex saveto deny Platt converting off his headin the 11th minute before going on toshow safe hands to deal withNor thampton’s continued aerialbombardment with little fuss.

Boothroyd, meanwhile, made min-imal fuss when asked about the per-formance of referee Mark Haywoodafterwards – surprising when youconsider the official deniedNorthampton what were reasonableappeals for a penalty kick on threeseparate occasions.

Haywood rubbed salt in the woundby sending off striker Roy O’D o n ova nfor a second bookable offence in in-jury time, but Boothroyd quipped: “Id o n’t get paid enough as it is. I can’tafford to get fined for talking aboutre f e re e s. ”

Ward, meanwhile, was just happyto talk about the way his players hadgone about their business four daysbefore they make the trip to AshtonGate to contest the first competitiveBristol derby in over six years.

He knows what to expect afterwatching JET, Sam Baldock et al dis-mantle Premier League CrystalPalace in the Capital One Cup lastTuesday. It’s a good job, then, that hisdefence is starting to re-find some ofthe form that made Rovers such aformidable opponent last season.

PROMISING youngster Tom Lock-yer says it was difficult to describehis feelings after scoring his firstsenior goal for Bristol Rovers.

Lockyer showed composure to aima back-post header past Northamp-ton goalkeeper Matt Duke in thesecond minute of a 1-0 win overNorthampton Town at the MemorialStadium on Saturday.

“It was all a bit of a blur,” he saidafterwards. “I had to see it again onthe TV to remember exactly how itall came about.

“I was delighted to score, but Id i d n’t really know what to do. I’m notreally used to scoring goals, so I justgot pushed towards the stand andeverybody jumped on.

“I think celebrations are

something I’ll really have to workon!” He added: “It was an amazingfeeling; especially to score a goal thatwon us the game. I couldn’t haveasked for anything more. I heard thefans singing my name and it wasamazing. I can’t really describe it.

“I’m thankful for that, but I have tokeep going. I’ve only had three orfour games, and it is a long season. Ihave to work hard to make sure thatI am still there at the end of it.”

Lockyer was also afforded theman-of-the-match accolade by spon-sors and he added: “I heard it an-nounced when there was a break inplay towards the end of the game.

“At the time I was just thinkingabout making sure we saw the gameout to get three points, because there

was still a few minutes to go. It was agreat feeling when the referee blewhis whistle, because it was a bigresult for us.

“There has always been a greatatmosphere around the place, evenwhen results weren’t going our way. There is a strong togetherness andbelief, so we always knew it was onlya matter of time before we started towin some games.”

Manager John Ward, meanwhile,is starting to see his squad bolsteredwith the return of senior playersfrom injury, and Lockyer admitted:“It is always in the back of your mindthat you might drop out of the teamwhen you see all the senior playerscoming back in to the squad.

“I just concentrate on trying to do

my best in every game, and I hopethat will be enough to see me keep myplace. The right-hand side of midfieldis not my most natural position, but Iam just happy to be out there playinga ny wh e re.

“It has been mentioned that I couldbecome a jack of all trades and amaster of none, but at the moment I’mjust trying to be on the team-sheet inwhatever position.”

Indeed, Lockyer looks set to keephis place in the side ahead of Wed-nesday night’s derby clash with Bris-tol City at Ashton Gate, and he added:“I’m looking forward to it. It means somuch to the fans and players alike. Itis a new experience for a lot of us, butthe atmosphere will be amazing and Ic a n’t wait.”

I MUST start with the one mo-ment of class from the best play-er on the pitch – Tom Lockyer,who was rightly namedm a n - o f - t h e - m at ch .

His goal came after good workfrom Ellis Harrison and LeeBrown as the full-back over-lapped to put in a great centre, which Lockyer expertly putaway in a style that Rickie Lam-bert would have been proud of.

Good players have the time topick their spot, and rarely canthat be said with a header, butt h at ’s the way it appeared as thehighly promising 18-year-oldcoolly nodded it into the cornerof the net.

Lockyer showed he could playas an attacking midfield player, but his defensive qualities alsoshowed up as he was in the rightplace at the right time again justbefore the break as he clearedfrom under his own crossbar.

It was amazing that a young-ster who doesn’t look thestrongest of players was able toshine, as this game sadly de-veloped into mayhem as the ballwas kicked longer and higher.

At least the early goal kepteveryone happy, as although thegame was incident-packed andentertaining the quality of foot-ball got worse as it went on.

Northampton were determ-ined not to take things lyingdown as they crashed intotackles, and were by far the dirti-est team we have seen for a longt i m e.

Sadly, the physical challengesare a big part of League Two, butif this is Cobblers manager AidyB o o t h royd ’s style them I’m gladthe former Rovers player hasnever become manager of ours i d e.

Gashead Laura Warren, stoodnext me, was receiving cards asshe celebrated her 20th birthday, but even she did not get as manyas the visitors. We wonderedwhat number Cobblers’ GaryDeegan gave the referee when hewas booked, as he had number 17on his shorts and 35 on hisshir t.

It was good that we sustainedthe late battering as they laidsiege to our goal. At least itshowed we had learned from theNewport game, and those qual-ities should stand us in goodstead on Wednesday night.

Some of our clearances wereterrible, just keeping us underpressure, as we again lackedcomposure at the back, but theplayers will point out that theykept the clean sheet and got thethree points.

We had our bit of luck whenfor the free-kick the Cobblers goton the edge of our box near theend clearly looked as if the in-fringement was in the box. Weknew it was going to be our daywhen Chris Hackett’s shot cameback off the post with SteveMildenhall well beaten.

It was good to see the return ofMatt Harrold and that he camethrough such a physical gameunscathed. He fed off the scrapsour defence dishes out thesedays, but at least they are givingnothing at all to the opposition. Lee Brown and John-Joe O’To o l e

Premier League

BEN Davies’ emphatic volley andPablo Hernandez’s late secondhanded Swansea their first points ofthe Barclays Premier League sea-son.

Having lost to Manchester Unitedand Tottenham, Michael Laudrup’sside were in need of a result to liftthem off bottom spot and duly de-livered, with Hernandez teeing upDavies for the opener before applyingthe finishing touch in the 83rdm i nu t e.

Swansea had begun lethargically, but West Brom failed to convert alively start into goals and paid theprice when Davies’ second career

goal left them chasing the game. Theycould not find a way back into it as thegame progressed and instead foundthemselves opened up at the back inthe closing minutes.

While Swansea’s campaign is nowup and running, Albion head into theinternational break with one pointfrom three matches.

The day had started with SteveClarke confirming Nicolas Anelka’sreturn to the fold, less than two weekssince his mooted retirement, by in-cluding the striker in the starting XI.His name was the most notable onC l a rke ’s team sheet but there wasalso a first league start for on-loanManchester City winger Scott Sin-clair, against his old club.

All eyes were on Anelka and he wasbusy. He beat Swansea’s offside trapearly on but, having darted into thearea, his cut back was easily gathered

by Michel Vorm. Anelka’s hungerwas again in evidence when hechased a lofted pass right to thebyline and dragged his pass backtowards Billy Jones, who failed to geta clean connection.

Against the run of play, Daviesstruck. Hernandez was the provider, attacking the left of the West Bromdefence and finding Davies at thesecond attempt, his first cross havingbeen headed clear.

When the ball fell for the left-backhe met it with a crisp side-footedvolley that left Boaz Myhill rooted.

Late in the game, Hernandez, shortly after grazing the crossbarfrom 20 yards, was on hand whenMichu unselfishly rolled the ballacross the box from close range.Michu might have shot from an awk-ward angle, but instead left his fellowSpaniard with a near open goal.

ARSENAL match-winner OlivierGiroud hailed Arsenal’s togethernessafter they were able to hold on toclaim a 1-0 north London derby vic-tory over Tottenham.

The Gunners moved fourth in theBarclays Premier League table,leap-frogging Spurs, as Giroud’sfirst-half winner was enough to handthem bragging rights and keep thepressure up at the top.

The France striker said: “E ve r y -body knows it’s a big game for us andthe fans are really excited.

“We want to keep it up after ourthree wins and we did well this af-ternoon. We never gave up and weshowed a real togetherness.”

Arsenal took the lead after 23minutes when Tomas Rosicky foundTheo Walcott on the right, his neatcross reached Giroud on the edge ofthe six-yard box and the strikerflicked the ball past Tottenham goal-keeper Hugo Lloris.

Giroud added: “I used to do that intraining, so Theo knows me verywell. I feel I know my team-mates andthey know me much better, so we findeach other without opening oure ye s. ”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wengerhas made only a small dip in thesummer transfer market compared tobig-spending Tottenham.

Wenger has completed only the freetransfers of midfielder MathieuFlamini and France Under-21 strikerYaya Sanogo.

On keeping his faith with the team,Aaron Ramsey said of Wenger: “Herecognises the quality in the teamand we’ve shown again today that we

have an enormous amount of qualityin the team, even though we’re prob-ably a bit short of numbers.

“That probably showed in the last20 minutes of the game, we were a bittired from all the games we havep l aye d .

“But he believes in us and hope-fully we’ve repaid him so far. Hope-fully, we can continue this good runwe ’re on at the moment.”

“We ’ve shown again what we’recapable of doing.

“I thought we played a tremendousgame today, we worked ever so hardand the big man up front started it offfor us and the whole team did verywe l l .

“We didn’t give them much space toplay through the lines and obviouslywe got the goal in the first half anddefended ever so well and I thoughtwe deserved the win in the end.”

Wenger played down the fact thatJack Wilshere left the field minutesbefore half-time for Flamini, who re-joined Arsenal this week on a freetransfer from AC Milan.

CRYSTAL Palace boss Ian Hollowaywas left feeling vindicated on Sat-urday after his decision to rotate hisentire starting line-up for the CapitalOne Cup gave his squad a freshnessfor their 3-1 win over Sunderland.

Holloway rested every player thatstarted the 2-1 loss at Stoke last week-end for the second-round trip to Bris-tol City, which ended in a 2-1 defeat.

But, with the same starting XI thatplayed at Stoke recalled for the visit ofSunderland, goals from Danny Gab-bidon, Dwight Gayle and StuartO‘Keefe secured their first BarclaysPremier League points of the sea-son.

Sunderland skipper John O’Sheawas dismissed after fouling JasonPuncheon in the box following StevenF letcher’s equaliser for the visitors.

Gayle tucked away the resultingpenalty to put the Eagles on their wayto a memorable victory, with Hol-loway delighted with his decision tomake the midweek changes.

“This time last year we played Bris-tol City away (in the Championship)with a full team and lost 4-1,” hesaid.

“In the week I made a big decisionthat I was not going to take the oneswho were involved on Saturday and Ithought you saw the freshness.

“I spoke to the chairman about itand wasn’t scared of any sort of badresult – we got one, but we had nobalance in that team.”

There had been suggestions in pre-vious weeks that Holloway was fight-

ing to save his job but, after guidingPalace back to the top-flight throughthe play-offs he believes his positionis not in question.

“I can assure you (chairman) Steve(Parish) and I know what we aretrying to do and are pulling in theright direction,” he said.

“I can’t help what people think orwhat people say, I’m just going to do asgood a job as I can, and 80-odd daysago I think I did a pretty good job, tobe honest.”

Mali winger Jimmy Kebe becamethe club’s 11th summer signing whenhe joined from Reading on Saturdaybut Holloway, who is likely to addHuddersfield full-back Jack Hunt tohis squad, is still looking for evenmore new recruits. “We ’re going tosmash some things and the chairmanand the other directors really want tohave a go,” he added.

DANIEL Sturridge continued hisearly-season heroics to help Liver-pool beat Manchester United, beforeadmitting he had played with an in-j u r y.

The striker got his fifth goal in fourgames to see off the Premier Leaguechampions 1-0 at Anfield, helpingDaniel Agger’s header beyond DavidDe Gea.

ALVARO Negredo has made a pos-itive impact at Manchester City, but isdetermined to make even morew ave s.

The striker continued his goodstart in City colours by coming off thebench to claim the breakthrough goalin Saturday’s laboured 2-0 win overHull in the Barclays PremierLea gue.

Negredo broke the deadlock for anotherwise unconvincing City with afirm header after 64 minutes, beforeYaya Toure completed the scoringwith a brilliant last-minutef re e - k i ck .

“Last week the goal didn’t matter, but this week it helped the team toopen the scoring and, with Yaya’sgoal, we closed the game.

“I’m very happy with my perform-ance. I would like to play moreminutes, but it is the manager’s de-cision and I accept it.

“I will keep working hard to getmore game-time.

“I’m very happy and I’ve settled inwell. I hope to keep helping City byscoring more goals.”

Negredo was introduced athalf-time in an attempt to inject freshlife into a lethargic City side.

But Negredo finally put the homeside ahead from Pablo Zabaleta’sc ro s s.

Despite their defeat, Moyes waspleased with how his players per-for med.

“I thought we played really well,”said Moyes. “Liverpool were resoluteand made it hard for us to score. Wemaybe didn’t quite create the bestwith the crossing. We got two or threeopportunities in the second half andwere just a little bit unfortunate thatwe didn’t take them.”

Ne g redo’s goal was his secondsince his summer move from Sevillaafter netting in last week’s shock lossat Cardiff, while he also had a strikewrongly disallowed in the sea-son-opening win over Newcastle.

The Spaniard, who is still to startthis season, said: “Luckily for me, I’mscoring goals and happy to help theteam.

Hull had some of the game’s betterchances, with Sone Aluko racingclear early on only to shoot wide.Danny Graham had a fine volleyruled out for offside and RobertKoren went close from long range.

BRISTOL beat Clifton by 12 tries tonil to ensure they finished theirpre-season fixtures having been onboth ends of one-sided scorelines.

After defeats of 69-5 at Bath and 51-7at Exeter, the boot was on the otherfoot for a Bristol side who scored fivetries in the first half and seven in thesecond to overwhelm a game andcommitted – but ultimately limited –Clifton team.

Despite the margin of victory, thematch has potentially thrown up acouple of problems for Bristol, withhooker Ross Johnston being sent offfor a tip-tackle and fly-half TristanRoberts leaving the ground in a slingafter suffering a shoulder injury.

But, whereas Bath and Exeter haddealt comfortably with Bristol’s at-tacking threat, while carving theirdefence open with alarming regular-ity, the traditional pre-season match atClifton allowed the Championshipside to be much more forceful.

Despite scoring 12 tries, where theyreally impressed was in their desireto win back the ball whenever theydid not have it. As a result, Cliftonwere suffocated when in possession,as Bristol did to the National TwoSouth side what the bigger boys haddone to them on the two previouswe e ke n d s.

On-trial winger Sammy Speightscored a hat-trick for Bristol, whileLuke Eves and James Merriman bothscored twice. Callum Braley, JamesHall and Mitch Eadie also crossed, while the tally was completed by twopenalty tries.

Eves, the scorer of two long-rangetries in the second half, said: “Wewere embarrassed about how we per-formed in the last two weeks, eventhough it’s been against Premiershipopposition, so we definitely neededthis run-out and it’s good to get a fewt r i e s.

“The defences were so good whenwe played Bath and Exeter – and, although we’re aspiring to be likethem, it is nice to play a game wherewe could get our structures in placeand get a few tries ourselves.

“We weren’t perfect but I thinkwe ’ve taken a step forward from thelast few weeks; even though the op-position has been considerably lower,I think we’ve got a lot out of it.”

Bristol’s defence was particularlytested when they were reduced to 12men shortly before half-time. AfterJohnston saw red, both props – Halland Bruce Douglas – were sent to thesin-bin, leaving Bristol three mendown as Clifton attacked their linerepeatedly. Yet still they managed torepel their hosts and deny them the

points their effort and endeavour hadprobably deserved.

“All credit to Clifton, they really didpush us hard, and at times they didfluster us,” said Eves. “We spoke be-fore the game about how embar-rassed we felt in the last two weeks, and we really wanted to put it right byshowing some of what we could do. Istill think we left a lot out there – bu tit was a good hit out.

“Our discipline is probablysomething we need to work on – it’sunacceptable to go down to 12 men,but then again, it was probably usefulin that it showed the spirit of the teamwhen we had to work for each otherand cover those wide spaces.”

Bristol took the lead through afourth-minute penalty try when theirscrum power overwhelmed Clifton, before scrum-half Braley brokestraight from a scrum and dartedthrough to increase his side’s ad-vanta g e.

Marco Mama sent Speight away forhis first try on 15 minutes, beforeprop Hall started and finished a slickattacking move for try number four, taking Ben Skirving’s offload anddiving over. Speight soon had hissecond try after Mama charged downCharlie Foley’s attempted clearanceand sent the winger clear.

Clifton had their moments in at-tack – and generally opted to run theball or send it to touch. But, as Bristolhad found to their cost against Bathand Exeter, against higher-level op-position, there is little room forer ror.

Jo h n s t o n’s dismissal – and the sub-sequent yellow cards for Hall andDouglas – unsurprisingly led to Clif-t o n’s lengthiest spell of possession inthe match. But Bristol’s players stucktogether in the face of increasingpressure and were consistently ableto make tackles and force turnovers, eventually alleviating the threat.

Seconds after the restart, Evesraced in for the first of his long-rangetries, before a second penalty try wasawarded from a close-range scrum.Clifton lost prop Tarquin Ledner tothe sin-bin, before replacement MitchEadie finished powerfully after Bris-tol had stolen a line-out, while an-other back-row replacement, NickKoster, put Speight in for hish at - t r i ck .

In the latter stages, with fitness andphysicality coming to the fore, Bris-tol’s control became absolute. Nothing seemedto happen forme, says Wood

CHRIS Wood’s challenge at the ISPSHanda Welsh Open at Celtic Manorended in bitter disappointment afterthe elation of a magnificent start tohis ‘home’ tour nament.

The Long Ashton player’s early de-light, following an excellent openingfive-under-par round 66, to end theday in joint second, turned to despairas the weekend unfolded.

A combination of missed putts, balls diverted by the swirling windand occasional misjudgement over acourse that proved to be as tough asany on this year’s European Tour, proved costly. But many leading play-ers suffered as well.

“I didn’t play well all week,” hesaid. “It was disappointing and if Ih a d n’t chipped and putted as well as Idid, I would have probably finishedlast.

“Despite everything I did nothingseemed to happen. Yet I could haveended up in the top 20, which wouldhave been a great result consider-ing.

“I took five at the 16th and thenanother five at the short 17th, yet Id i d n’t hit a bad shot at either hole. Imissed my spot by a yard at 17 and theball plugged in the bunker.”

But, as usual, he is taking positivesfrom the week. He said that his back, which kept him out for two months, isnow giving him few problems.

The other bonus was that his coachPaul Mitchell, the Bristol and Cliftonclub professional, was able to watcheach one of the 288 shots.

“I have this week off and we cannow work on my game this weekbefore I play my next event, the DutchOpen,” he said.

His four-over-par return left him ina share of 39th place, 12 shots behindFrenchman Gregory Bourdy, whoemerged from the pack in a dramaticfinal afternoon and finished withthree successive birdies over thehardest holes on the course.

The lead changed hands frequently, with third-round leader AmericanPeter Uihlein and Dane Soren Kjeld-sen also in the battle.

Wo o d ’s ISM stable-mate ChrisLloyd spent the weekend back inKingswood after missing the cut byone shot for the second successivewe e k .

After returning early from theJohnnie Walker at Gleneagles, histotal of five-over-par 147 left him on74th spot at Celtic Manor.

Erratic play proved expensive as hemade one double bogey, six bogeysand four birdies in an opening 75.

His hopes looked even more remoteafter he dropped three furthershots after six holes of his secondro u n d .

But he has always been a fighterand gradually hauled himself backwith a succession of pars, a birdie atthe eighth and an eagle at the drive-able 15th. Dropping a shot at thetough 16th proved fatal.

Meanwhile, Liam Bond, the StPierre touring player who has dom-inated the West Country PGA scenethis year, faltered after causing asensation by leading at halfway onf ive - u n d e r- p a r.

It was so inspiring to hear Karen’s speech at Business 4 Sport seminar

Bristol Rugby 2013-14The season so far . . .

IHAD a phone call out of the

blue recently from a chap calledDavid Smith. He asked me if Iwould be interested in speakingat a business seminar. I was alittle taken aback, becauseapart from giving a best man’s

speech, and saying a few words atend-of-season presentations, I havehad no experience of this type ofthing.

I asked David what topic he re-quired me to talk about. He replied:“Your favourite subject – yourself !” Ido like people with a sense of humour. He did eventually explain that some-body from the Football Association, who had been booked to attend andtalk about grassroots sport, was un-able to make the function. David said

that he was really clutching at strawsto get someone, and then thought ofme. Those carefully-chosen, charm-ing words helped me make my de-cision.

The seminar was hosted by thecompany Business 4 Sport. What I cangather is that they host these eventsfor business people who are inter-ested in helping sponsor individual or

team sports. The main speaker thatevening was Karen Butler, a para-lympian who has appeared at severalOlympic Games, taking part in theshooting event.

She spoke very eloquently and pas-sionately about her sport. She ex-plained how hard it was for her to keepcompeting at major sporting eventswhile holding down a full-time job, yetreceiving hardly any funding.

I have to say her speech was veryinspiring, and I hope she is successfulin gaining some sponsorship, whichwill help keep her competing formany years to come.

My speech was pretty low-key bycomparison. The knowledge I have ongrassroots sport is limited and basic. Iwarbled on about when I was a lad

how we used to put jumpers down forgoal posts, and could only dreamabout playing on Astroturf surfacesthat the youngsters of today get toplay on.

I also carried on talking to anyonestill listening, about how some sportsduring my time growing up, includ-ing tennis and golf, were so elitist.

There was a tennis court literallyyards from my boyhood home, whichwas for the use of members only. Thegate was always locked during theday, probably to stop our sort fromplaying. Along with a couple of mypals, we would regularly cut a smallgap in the wire fencing enabling us toplay during days in the school hol-idays. It would have made a lot moresense if they would have left the gate

open during the day, when the mem-bers were at work allowing us chil-dren to play, without resulting tocriminal damage.

It was the same when it came togolf. Unlike these days, I didn’t knowanyone who was a member of a golfclub. My mates and I would walk tothe pitch-and-putt course at AshtonCourt, and sneak on to play. We as-sumed for years that a golf courseonly had 12 holes, the reason beingour round started on the seventh tee,out of site of the clubhouse.

I can remember one lad fromaround our way that was brilliant atan elitist sport – water polo. Therewas talk of him going to an Olympicgames, unfortunately for him though, his horse drowned!
