After quite some time and anticipation, and after many questions about it, I’m pleased to say that we finally got our handicap accessi-

ble restroom installed and functioning in St. Mary’s Church. Many thanks go to several people who made it happen: Randy Besio, Randy Gray, Terry Mossow, Victor Perry and Rob Rufa for quite a few hours of labor; Bruce Riley for some direct assistance with the plumbing; architect Tim Burley for drafting the design and blueprint; the Knights of Columbus of New York State who, through Catholic Chari-ties in our diocese, funded a grant to help finance the pro-ject in order to make St. Mary’s a more accessible space for people with mobility problems. To everyone who made it happen - thank you many times over! ~Fr. Mark

Daily Mass on Saturdays Starting in August

9:00 am at Sacred Heart

We are adding one regularly scheduled Mass to the week - a “weekday Mass” on Saturday morning (i.e., not the “anticipated Sunday Mass” that is offered on Saturday evening). Beginning in August 5th, a 9:00 am Mass will be offered at Sacred Heart Church and will remain in effect so long as we have three priests available in our parishes.

Massena’s Vacation Bible School Do good! Seek peace and go after it!

July 17-21, 2017 VBS 2017 - Heroes Central will begin Monday, July 17 (9-11:30AM) at the First United Methodist Church (across the street from Sacred Heart Church). There's still time to register online at https://massenacatholics.com. Children entering Kindergarten through grade 6 are invited to join in the fun. We are still accepting donations of plates, napkins, cups, hex nuts, aluminum pie plates, etc. They may be placed in the box in the back of the church. Thank you!

If you have been abused or victimized

by someone representing the Catholic

Church…

Please believe in the possibility for hope and help and healing. We encourage you to come forward and speak out. Eve-ry arch/diocese/eparchy in the United States now has a victim assistance coor-dinator who is available to obtain support for your needs, to help you make a formal complaint of abuse to the arch/diocese/eparchy, and to arrange a personal meeting with the bishop or his representative, if you desire. The victim assis-tance coordinator for your diocese is:

Nursing Home Volunteers Needed

This ministry is for those called by compassion to be the presence

of Christ to the most vulnerable. Volunteers are needed to assist with

distributing communion at the nursing homes on Sundays. They are also

needed on Wednesdays at the St. Regis Nursing Home and Fridays at the

Highland Nursing Home to assist with Mass. Through the giving of the

Eucharist, attentive listening, sharing prayer, offering reassurance and

being present, ministers will bring the Body of Christ to those who can-

not join us physically in worship. If you can help out or would like more

information please contact Julia LaShomb at the parish office.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

“…all of us are linked by unseen bonds and together form a universal family...” (Francis 62) We are all interconnected and children of God. If you pull on one thread, the whole web is af-fected. Humans need to change their way of thinking from anthrocentrism (human-centered) to ecocentrism (nature-centered). Being conscious and mindful of our consumerism be-haviors is one way to develop a more ecocentric mind. You can drive less and carpool more, waste less food and compost, and buy local and reduce your carbon footprint. All of these small changes add up. By being more connected with God and nature, we allow ourselves to see the bigger picture.

SPIRITUAL BOOK CLUB

The Massena Catholic Community Book Club meets once a month to discuss various works of fiction and non-fiction that have importance to the Catholic Church and relevance in our daily lives. Copies of the books are often available on Kindle through our parish's Formed.org subscription or through purchase with Amazon or available on our Kiosk in the back of the church. We meet the Third Thursday of the month, 7:00 pm at the parish offices. Please contact the parish office for more information.

BRINGING UP THE GIFTS AT MASS

You are encouraged to bring up the Offertory Gifts in remem-brance of your deceased relative, friend, or loved one when the Mass intention is for one of them. Since Ushers do not always know who in the family will be at the Mass, they would appreciate your letting them know you are present and willing to carry the gifts up.

Bazaar Meeting

There will be a Bazaar meeting held on Monday, July 17th, 6:30 PM, at the St. Mary’s rectory. Anyone interested in helping out this year is encouraged to attend.

SANCTUARY CANDLES? MEMORIAL FUND? The question has been asked, “what are the lectors talking

about when someone is mentioned before Mass, in reference to ‘Sanctuary Candles’ or ‘Memorial Fund’ donations?” Good question! The answer is simple - anyone may make an offering to help the par-ish purchase the sanctuary lamp, which continually burns near the tabernacle, in any of our Churches. Additionally, each parish has Endowment Funds which generate revenue for the parish (in the form of dividends, or “interest”). A “Memorial Fund” donation is a gift you can make in someone’s memory, and we will deposit those gifts to help build the Endowment Fund principal. That is to say, your gift made in this way will “continue giving,” because it will remain in the Endowment Fund earning interest for years to come. Each year we intend to offer Mass for those remembered and honored with Memo-rial Fund gifts. Feel free to call the office or to speak with Father Reilly about these opportunities for remembering friends and loved ones with memorial gifts in the parish.

The First Catholic Church in Massena St. Peter’s Church

Massena was recognized as a township in 1802, and when it’s name was put on the map people of many nation-alities came to settle here. There were a few Irish Catholic families who settled near Massena Center and Massena Point, where the Grasse River flows into the St. Lawrence River.

The nearest Catholic Church was in Hogansburg, a distance of 8 or 9 miles. Catholics walked to Hogansburg for Sunday Mass. As the Catholic population grew they decided it was time to build a church close by.

Captain Haskell was a rich man who donated land for a church building on what in now Center St. In 1838, un-der the direction of Father McNulty, St. Peter’s Church was built. It was 24 feet square and seated 20 families. It cost $120.00 and was completed and blessed by Father McNulty in 1840. After 6 years it became too small for the growing congregation and another 24 square feet was added. St. Pe-ter’s was served by a priest from Hogansburg.

The original church building was moved to another loca-tion when the bridge was replaced.
