This weekend, we have two significant moments to note. First, Bishop LaValley’s visit to offer our final regularly scheduled Sunday Mass at St. Jo-seph’s, observing its change of status to Oratory.

We note with sadness the passage of an era, but with Christian hope we also observe this moment with gratitude: we acknowledge all that God has done through St. Joseph’s over the years, and we trust that the Lord has not finished gracious-ly blessing our community. Not at all! Secondly, this Satur-day we’ll offer our final seasonal Mass at St. Lawrence, which will reopen for the spring/summer season at Easter (and, don’t forget, we’ll also have Christmas Eve Mass there). Though not as dramatic or “final” as the St. Joseph’s closure, it can still be a tough transition. We acknowledge that, and pray for guidance as we go forward. Our demographics continue to shift and our pastoral situation keeps evolving. We continue to observe the “signs of the times,” prayerfully discerning God’s will in all of this, and we seek to fulfill the mission we’ve been given by the Lord: “go therefore and make disci-ples of all nations . . . “ (Matt 28:19)

Even if we struggle with our current situation and the changes we face, we should always remember Christ’s reassur-ance: “behold, I am with you always, even to the end of

time.” (Matt 28:20) ~Fr. Mark

St Joseph’s Parish (cont’d)In 1952, plans were made for a school and con-

vent. As part of the plan the rest of the block was pur-chased in 1954. Three sisters of St Joseph went to the par-ish to teach catechism and to visit the sick. They lived at St. Mary’s convent. In 1958, ground was broken for St. Joseph’s School, which opened in September of 1959 with grades one through four. Another grade was added each year until it had eight grades. In the same year, the parish leased a house at 68 Malby Ave for use as a temporary convent.

In 1960, a new rectory was built at 72 Malby and the old rectory at 4 Tracy St. which had been in use for twelve years was sold. In 1962, the house at 36 Alden St. was purchased as a permanent convent and was enlarged to accommodate the sisters teaching in the school. In 1964 there were 475 families enrolled at St. Joseph’s parish and 220 pupils in the school. The first eighth grade graduation was held on June 20, 1964 with 13 boys and girls receiv-ing their diplomas.

St. Joseph parish was combined with St. Marys in the year 2005, and became a seasonal worship site for several years. As the population of Massena continued to decrease the decision was made to designate St. Joseph’s Church as an Oratory. Bishop Terry LaValley will cele-brate the last Mass at St. Joseph’s as a worship site on October 8, 2017. However, any parishioner wishing to request a wedding or funeral in the building may do so.

To be prayed daily from October 1321, 2017 in preparation of the Consecration

on October 22nd at St. Mary’s CathedralLoving Mother, 100 years ago you appeared to shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal with a message of penance, prayer, and peace. As we in the Diocese of Ogdensburg prepare to celebrate the anniversary of our Cathedral dedi-cated to your Assumption and consecrate the entire diocese to your Immaculate Heart, we desire to become like those young shepherds. May we have spirits courageous to face any opposition to the faith, minds made pure of the corrup-tion of the world, and hearts open to your loveboth to be received and to be shared.

In a special way during this novena, I ask your intercession on this intention____________.

Lord Jesus, we honor those who bravely built up the Church here in our diocese and around the world. We praise youthe one sure foundation of the Church and of our livesthis day and always. Hear our prayers.
