One of the earliest cities to be named European Capital of Culture, in 1990, Glasgow today remains a major centre for the arts. Discover a wealth of free museums and galleries, including the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, the Burrell Collection, St Mungo Museum, the People’s Palace and the magnificent Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum – not to mention the legacy left by Art Nouveau pioneer and father of the ‘Glasgow Style’, the artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The contemporary arts scene has flourished in Glasgow in recent years and covers everything from major exhibitions and galleries to thriving independent studios and acclaimed events and festivals. Glasgow is also a UNESCO City of Music, where you can choose from around 130 live music events a week. The city is home to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, one of Europe’s leading symphony orchestras. You can find entertainment long into the night at live music sessions, clubs and gigs – ranging from traditional to the more offbeat. Many of Glasgow’s venues are stars in their own right, among them the neon-fronted Barrowland, The Arches and the SECC. The new Hydro, Scotland’s
home of live entertainment, opens in September 2013 and will host national and international music, comedy and sport.
Glasgow has the best shopping in the UK outside London, and has everything you need for some unforgettable retail therapy in its bustling city centre and beyond. The pedestrianised Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street are together dubbed the ‘Style Mile’ and pack in just about everything you could want from high street to exclusive shopping. The new Buchanan Quarter is opening in Spring 2013 and will bring further new retail brands to Glasgow and Scotland. From the spacious Buchanan Galleries and the recently expanded St Enoch Centre to the elegant Princes Square, which offers five floors of upmarket shopping, there’s a fashion fix to suit all tastes and budgets.
Don’t miss the Merchant City area for its unique combination of designer stores in one of the oldest quarters of Glasgow. Emporio Armani, Pretty Green, Ralph Lauren, Mulberry, Cruise and Agent Provocateur, to name but a few, are mixed with breathtaking Victorian architecture, independent art galleries and a wealth of stylish cafés, bars and bistros for a break between shops.
In the bohemian West End you’ll find a treasure trove of unique, one-off stores, from the design genius of Timorous Beasties to the vintage clothing and gift boutiques huddled in the lanes off Byres Road. Nearby, try De Courcy’s Arcade and Watermelon for fabulous second hand fashions, gifts and more, or simply explore Ashton Lane or Great Western Road.
Heading out of town? There’s a world of shopping at Silverburn, Braehead, Glasgow Fort Shopping Park and East Kilbride Shopping Centre, where you can find high street names, independent retailers and a good range of eateries.
Glasgow has been named as the number one UK destination and number six European destination in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Destinations on the Rise 2012 list which honour the global destinations that have seen the greatest increase in positive feedback from travellers year-on-year.

The Glasgow School of Art became the centre of the art movement in Scotland and soon the ‘Glasgow Style‘ was born, created by a group known as ‘the Four’ – Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Herbert MacNair and sisters, Margaret and Frances MacDonald.
The School of Art is considered to be Mackintosh’s masterpiece and it is still a working art school today. The style of the building demonstrates Mackintosh’s hallmark Art Nouveau style while the interiors include furniture, drawings and paintings by Mackintosh.
The Lighthouse, on Mitchell Lane, is one of Mackintosh’s earliest buildings and was originally designed as the Glasgow Herald newspaper offices. Now home to Scotland’s Centre for Design & Architecture, it includes a fascinating Mackintosh Interpretation Centre and the Mackintosh Tower, which offers wonderful views. You can also see a new exhibition of Mackintosh designs that unfortunately were never built.
At the beautiful Willow Tea Rooms, you can enjoy afternoon tea just as it was taken in the same rooms 100 years ago, seated on one of Mackintosh’s famous high-backed chairs.
Queen’s Cross Church is a Mackintosh design which opened in 1899. See the magnificent stained glass windows which capture the light and the exceptional wood and stone carvings of this building which is now the international headquarters of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.
At the University of Glasgow’s Hunterian Art Gallery is the Mackintosh House. Astonishingly, the home Mackintosh shared with his wife at 6 Florentine Terrace has been meticulously reassembled at this site.

The Scotland Street School Museum was Mackintosh’s last major commission. Take one of the free guided tours and enjoy the impressive leaded-glass towers and magnificent tiled entrance hall.
Not far from the city centre is the Mackintosh-designed House for an Art Lover, in Bellahouston Park. The building was designed for a competition in 1901, but not built until 1989. As well as admiring the magnificent external design, explore the breathtaking rooms, which feature high-back chairs, oval shapes and floral inserts.
Outside of Glasgow, Helensburgh is home to another stunning Mackintosh-designed property, the Hill House. Sitting high above the River Clyde, it is home to original furniture and interior design and also has formal gardens designed in the Mackintosh style.
A Charles Rennie Mackintosh Trail Ticket can be purchased from VisitScotland Information Centres in Glasgow, making it easier to enjoy all the attractions whilst travelling in a sustainable way. The one-day Mackintosh Trail Ticket allows visitors unlimited travel on subway and bus services, as well as including entry to all participating Mackintosh attractions.

The Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park is the private collection amassed by shipping magnate Sir William Burrell, who gifted more than 8,000 objects to the city, including Islamic art and works by Cézanne.
Victorian gems to seek out include the Kibble Palace, a magnificent glasshouse in the Botanic Garden, the Tenement House in Garnethill, which offers a snapshot into life in Victorian Glasgow, the splendid City Chambers which dominates George Square, and a number of Greek and Egyptian-inspired buildings created by Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson.
The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) has an extensive collection of work by local and international artists. Make a point of looking around the ground floor gallery where you’ll usually find a striking new exhibition.
Challenge inquisitive minds at the Glasgow Science Centre, an amazing titanium crescent-shaped building by the River Clyde with three floors of interactive exhibits and the latest blockbuster releases at its IMAX cinema.

Discover beauty spots less than an hour from Glasgow, with the lush Clyde Valley, magnificent estates on the Firth of Clyde, historical attractions and country parks. A great way to explore is to follow the Clyde Valley Tourist Route, a 42-mile scenic route taking in attractions and stunning vantage points.
Summerlee, the Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, is located in Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire on the site of a 19th century ironworks, where you can take a ride on Scotland’s only electric tramway and venture deep underground in a recreated mine. In the same area, Strathclyde Country Park is 400 acres of open parkland, woodland and varied wildlife habitats around Strathclyde Loch and offers a wide range of excellent outdoor activities.
Visit the fantastic attractions in South Lanarkshire, such as the Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride and follow the story of Scotland’s countryside and people. Nearby, explore the beautiful 32 acres of James Hamilton Heritage Park, which has a watersports centre and is home to a bird and nature sanctuary.
New Lanark World Heritage Site is the first of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the area. It is a beautifully restored 18th century cotton mill village, set in a spectacular valley which offers a fascinating insight into Robert Owen’s idealistic vision for workers of the 1700s.
See the magnificently restored former hunting lodge of Chatelherault, near Hamilton, and the David Livingstone Centre at Blantyre.
Enjoy life by the sea in Inverclyde, situated along the coastal reach of the River Clyde, west of the city. Find out about the area’s maritime history at the McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock, a wonderful Victorian museum which also features the town’s most famous son, James Watt, who made the steam engine. Gourock and Greenock sit at the mouth of the river, while Port Glasgow’s 15th century Newark Castle is well worth a stop en route.
In East Dunbartonshire, you’ll discover the second World Heritage Site in the area, the Antonine Wall, parts of which can be seen north of Glasgow at Bearsden and Kirkintilloch. The turf wall marks the northernmost point of Roman conquest in Britain.
Excellent walking opportunities present themselves in every region, but the most notable is perhaps Milngavie, where a distinctive obelisk marks the starting point of the West Highland Way, the 95-mile path through the west Highlands to Fort William. If you’d prefer a shorter, gentler walk, Milngavie’s Mugdock Country Park has some great short routes, and a host of activities, from horse riding and orienteering to archery and golf.
The magnificent Paisley Abbey can be found in the heart of the town in Renfrewshire, on the east bank of the White Cart Water. The abbey’s origins date back to 1163 and this was reputedly the site where William Wallace was educated. This year will see the town host the Royal National Mod for the first time, which will see eight days of celebrations of Gaelic culture and heritage.

Sailing is a very popular sport off the west coast of Scotland. Inverclyde has some great marinas such as Kip Marina, which has a range of services, offering berthing, servicing and a chartroom. One of Glasgow’s best-loved parks, Kelvingrove enjoys a fine setting on the banks of the River Kelvin and defines the centre of the city’s bohemian West End. Bordered on three sides by grand vistas – the curved residential terraces high on Woodlands Hill, the gothic spire of the University of Glasgow and the red sandstone Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum – it offers one of Glasgow’s most pleasant and most photographed city walks.
Glasgow Green is the city’s oldest park. Its history can be traced back to 1450, when James II granted permission for it to be used as common grazing ground which continued until the 19th century. Discover more of the city’s history at the People’s Palace, a free museum in the park.

What’s on
Celtic Connections brings the city alive in January with three weeks of contemporary and traditional Celtic-influenced music in its most diverse forms, from traditional pipes and folk through to American roots and blues.
The Glasgow Film Festival in February presents a fortnight of premieres and red carpet events, all open to the public to join in.
March sees the Aye Write! Book Festival celebrate the best of Scottish and international writers, while the Glasgow International Comedy Festival also gets into full swing – expect some laughs from comedy’s biggest names.
Discover music, theatre, gala days, dance and comedy at the West End Festival in June with choral music, folk, rock and jazz alongside author readings, guided walks and all types of dance. Enjoy an exciting programme of unique and innovative performances, including world premieres, at the Merchant City Festival in July.
In August, witness a winner being crowned at the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green. In the culmination of a week of events in the Piping Live! festival, more than 200 bands
come together in a dazzling sound and vision experience of traditional pipes and drums.
Following on from the football matches of the 2012 Olympics, Glasgow will be holding a number of international sporting events with football, athletics, track cycling and netball. All these great events will lead on to 2014 when Hampden, Scotland’s national stadium, will hold the athletics events and closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.
Why not try something different at the Strathaven Balloon Festival or see the Clyde on foot during the Great Scottish Run?
Sample some of the local produce at the FeastRen, East Renfrewshire Food Festival in September with cookery demonstrations, workshops and a farmers’ market.
There are a good number of Highland games, festivals, competitive music events, and water-based activities taking place all year round. The year culminates in Glasgow Loves Christmas, a programme of events that make Christmas shopping in Glasgow one of the best experiences in the country.
One of the greatest things about Greater Glasgow & The Clyde Valley is the range and variety of events taking place all year round. Cultural, musical and traditional events attract performers from all over the world to Glasgow’s famous stages.

Now is the time to choose yourholiday accommodation
This guide has been split into five accommodation sections for Greater Glasgow & The Clyde Valley.
• Hotels and Inns• Guest Houses and B&Bs• Self Catering• Camping and Caravan Parks• Hostels/Activity Accommodation
Establishments are listed within these sections in alphabetical order by location and then by business name. Each entry has a map reference (see example) relating to the maps which appear on pages 44-47 of this guide. The maps are helpful if you don’t know where a particular town is in relation to the area that interests you. Where establishments are listed as ‘By’ a city, town or village it is wise to check the exact location online and with the operator before making your journey. Some listings have a distance beside the location; this indicates the approximate road distance in miles from the location. These mileages are voluntarily provided by the businesses themselves.
BookingAccepting accommodation by telephone or in writing means you have entered into a legally binding contract with the proprietor of the establishment. If you cancel or fail to take up that accommodation, for whatever reason, the proprietor generally has the right to ask for compensation. You should always check the cancellation terms in advance and, if you must cancel a booking, advise the management immediately. Online bookings are also subject to terms and conditions; please check direct with the provider for these.
Insurance and cancellationsShould you have to cancel for any reason, it is reassuring to know that you can be insured against any compensation claim. Please ensure you take out cancellation insurance prior to your trip.
PricingThe prices of accommodation, services and facilities stated in this guide are based on information received from the relevant advertisers. Please note that prices include VAT where applicable and are for your guidance only (VATas at November 2012). Please check prices when you book accommodation and confirm exactly what the quoted price includes.
SmokingThe majority of Scotland’s indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and cafés, are smoke-free by law, creating a healthier and fresher environment for residents and visitors to our beautiful country. Hotels, B&Bs and guest houses are also smoke-free but can designate bedrooms where guests can smoke, if they wish to do so.
To check the availability of such bedrooms, please check with the establishment directlywhen booking. For further information, visitwww.clearingtheairscotland.com
ü Look out for the short breaks symbolGreater Glasgow & The Clyde Valley offer a fabulous range of quality assured accommodation as listed on pages 22-38. Establishments which display the above symbol offer short breaks. Contact them direct for current special offers or to make a booking.
E Assistance DogsThe new Equality Act 2010 protects anybodywho has or has had a disability and peoplewho experience discrimination because theyare linked or associated with a disabled person. In respect of assistance dogs the law quite clearly states that to refuse admission to a registered assistance dog is now unlawful and constitutes discrimination under the Equality Act 2012 under three possible categories: 1: discrimination arising from a disability; 2: indirect discriminationand 3: disability harassment. VisitScotland is committed to equality of opportunity and is
working through its Accessible Tourism Project to educate and inform all our customers about the requirements under the law. We have encouraged all our business customers to use the assistance dog symbol in order to comply with law, or make it clear in a statement that they welcome all assistance dogs. It is always advisable to check with each establishment prior to booking.
v Hearing LoopInduction loop and infrared systems help people with hearing loss hear more clearly by reducing the effect of background noise. When a building has been fitted with a loop or infrared system, you will usually find this mentioned in their adverts, newsletters and at the entrance to the building. Informative signs and symbols should be displayed such as the loop sign above, it is always worth asking if it is not obvious. Please note this iconis not verified by VisitScotland Quality and Standards Department.
, Dogs WelcomeDogs are welcome to this establishment, on the understanding that they are on their leash andare kept under control. You may have to check with each establishment whether there are restricted areas for your dog. Please note this icon is not verified by VisitScotland Quality and Standards Department.
ù GaelicIn this area some/most of the population speak the Gaelic language (as well as English), so if you wish to stay with Gaelic speakers please look out for the symbol within entries and ask when you book your accommodation to confirm that this is available. The Gaelic language is rich in tradition, history, music, and culture, and will add an interesting dimension and unique sense of place to your holiday.
