Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without

sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to

learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing

Flyers have been distributed about an upcoming P & C fundraiser. On Friday 9th (from 3.15pm) and Saturday 10th November, the P & C will be holding its annual Family Portrait fundraiser. Friday afternoon/evening will be an inside backdrop and we are going to try to take Saturday's photos outside in our beautiful playground, which has proven very successful in the past. For $15, you receive a 10 x 13" framed portrait and there are other poses taken which are offered for purchase at hugely discounted prices. We have used this company now for many years and the photographer is brilliant, you will not be disappointed! Great Christmas present idea!

P & C Family Portraits

* Notes were distributed to all students last term about orders for this year’s yearbook. We have tried to allow plenty of time to work this cost into family budgets. Orders must be in by 9th November. The yearbook will be similar to previous years and is a pictorial collection of 2018 memories in full colour professionally printed by Fusion Books.

Yearbook Orders

Some pages from last year’s yearbook are pictured to give new families an idea of what it will look like.

Tomorrow, Saturday 27th October, all Kinder to Year 6 students are invited to join us in the Jacaranda Parade of Youth down Prince Street. Students wishing to march with the school need to meet teachers at the steps of the old town library, at the river end of Prince Street, at 8.30am, dressed in full school uniform with a hat. The parade will commence at 9.00am. Year 6 students are reminded that participation in the parade is part of their eligibility for a Star Award. All children who participate in the march will receive a small canteen voucher as a reward along with a Community Service Award. Please ensure names are ticked off when arriving for the parade. On Wednesday, 31st October our band, choirs, dance groups and a couple of class groups will be performing at See Park (the Bacon Street end of the park) from 10.30am until approximately 11.30am for a “Concert under the Blooms.” After performing, the students will be serving morning tea to the residents of the retirement homes from the Grafton area. Please join us for a fun morning of entertainment by our students. On this same day, following See Park, some of the groups are continuing on to Grafton Shoppingworld to perform for the lunch crowd there. A reminder that all Jacaranda Thursday notes need to be returned to their class teacher ASAP. Our mini-band will be performing at the Telstra Riverlight Festival on Friday, 2nd November. Notes with all details will be handed to the students involved. The GPS performance is scheduled for 6.15pm

Yesterday, our Year 3 students travelled down river to explore Yamba and Iluka and crossed the mouth of the mighty Clarence River by ferry. A great day was had by all! We were very proud of our students who received many compliments from community members regarding their excellent behaviour and good manners. It was lovely to watch the interaction between our Year 3 girls and boys and the other ferry travellers, as there were many conversations between the youngsters and the Senior Citizens group who were also crossing the river.

Year 3 Excursion

* Book Club issue 7 catalogues have gone home with students. Parents can order online or money/orders can be placed in the red box in the library. Orders are due back to school by Wednesday 31st October Week 3. * We are seeking donations of any small figurines or toy vehicles (up to 15cm high) which may be sitting no longer used at home. They are going to be used by the senior classes for some photography, movie making and technology lessons. Donations of these items can be left at either office. * Our Year 1 students have been visiting the Primary Campus to familiarise themselves with the bigger campus. Next week, 1BK and 1NH will be having most of the day across the road, but will still arrive and be picked up at the end of the day from the Mary Street campus.

HPV Central HPV is short for Human Powered Vehicle. That’s right; anything powered by YOU is

an HPV. Every Friday morning, GPS conducts a Bike Bus, being supervised riding of bikes to school. A return home service also operates. The teachers accompanying the children take all reasonable care to ensure the safety of the children. Parents and carers are welcome to join us for the ride.

HELPFUL TIPS

What to consider when buying a bike for Christmas.

What are they going to be using it for? Bicycles are built differently for a reason. BMX bikes are small and not meant to be ridden for an extended length of time. Most BMX races last for about 30-45 seconds and the rider is standing up the whole way. The seat is mainly there to protect the rider from the frame. These bikes are for short races and for riding at the local bowl as they are very manoeuvrable. Not very comfortable for longer rides. Mountain bikes have plenty of gears, have suspension, are larger in size than BMX and can be set up to be very comfortable to ride in a wide range of situations. This is very important as the seat height is crucial in avoiding long-term chronic injuries from a bike that hasn’t been set up for the rider. Mt bikes are quite versatile as they can be ridden on and off road and give great traction due to their wider knobbly tyres.

Next week I’ll discuss ‘comfort’ or ‘cruiser’ style bikes.

Week 1 and 2’s recipients of the Grafton City Cycles $20 vouchers are…Riley and Jasper Tobin.

GPS HPV program is proudly supported by Grafton City Cycles.
