Westlawn Public School Newsletter Term 1 Week 5 27th February 2018 Strive to Achieve North Street, Grafton. 2460 6642 7466 [email protected] Last week we launched our Westlawn Public School Facebook page. It has been a wonderful success so far with so many positive comments about our students and the school in general. We are very pleased to welcome Mr Michael Hughes as our new General Assistant. We thank Mr Sutherland for all he has done for our school over the past few years. Good luck to our swimmers who are attending the Mid North Coast Swimming Carnival today. We know they will do Westlawn proud not only with their swimming ability but also with their positive attitude and sportsmanship. Congratulations also to Keira Rasborsek who has been selected as a representative in the Mid North Coast tennis team. Well done Keira! We often need to contact parents for a range of reasons and we must have updated information. Yesterday when I tried to contact parents for various reasons three had disconnected numbers and so did their emergency contacts. Please make sure that the school office is notified about any changes regarding information. P&C Our P&C AGM will be next month, on Wednesday 14 th March, in the Meeting Room. All positions including P&C executive or any sub- committees such as the Canteen committee are voted on at the AGM. Just a reminder that according to NSW P&C Federation guidelines, those wishing to vote, stand for office, or move motions, must be financial members. Membership is $1 per year. Payment of the membership fee must be made by the close of one meeting so that the member is eligible to exercise membership rights at the next meeting. The P&C Executive needs to be made up of people who want the best for the students of this school and support the school in a positive way, that is, a positive team of committed people who make every effort to work together to get the jobs done. The Executive members play an important role in encouraging other parents to become involved in the school and in making new members feel welcome. I have enjoyed working with our dedicated P&C, and admire their commitment and continued effort, much of it often unseen. Clean Up Australia Day Friday 2 nd March is Schools Clean Up Australia Day. Our students will be cleaning up our school grounds, with each grade being responsible for a small area of the playground. We are asking students to bring a pair of rubber gloves or gardening gloves to wear. Please label them with your child’s name. Coles Sports Vouchers Coles Sports for Schools is back to help Aussie kids stay fit and healthy. When you shop at Coles, you'll receive Sports for Schools vouchers that we can exchange for sports equipment. The Message from the Principal

Last week we launched our Westlawn Public

School Facebook page. It has been a wonderful

success so far with so many positive comments

about our students and the school in general.

We are very pleased to welcome Mr Michael Hughes as our new General Assistant. We thank Mr Sutherland for all he has done for our school over the past few years. Good luck to our swimmers who are attending

the Mid North Coast Swimming Carnival today.

We know they will do Westlawn proud not only

with their swimming ability but also with their

positive attitude and sportsmanship.

Congratulations also to Keira Rasborsek who has

more vouchers you collect, the more sports equipment we'll receive. You can drop the vouchers into the school office or into the boxes at Coles in Shoppingworld, Coles in the Mall or Coles at South Grafton. Thank you for all the support so far. Year 6 Expression of Interest

All Year 6 students have received an ‘Expression

of Interest’ form to fill in for 2019. This

information is for our local Public High Schools

to have an estimate of numbers of students who

may be enrolling next year. It is important to

read the information in the booklet before filling

in the form. Every Year 6 student needs to

return the completed form to the Westlawn PS

office or to Mrs Barnier no later than Friday 9th

March. This is not an enrolment form for high

school. Enrolment forms are given to students

later in the year. If you have any questions,

please contact the school office or Mrs Barnier

and they will be happy to assist with your

enquiry.

Message from the P&C - Canteen News Our canteen manager Michelle Ford has decided to step down from her role as Westlawn Canteen Manager, as she will be returning to work. If there is anyone who may be interested in taking over as Canteen Manager please speak to any of the P& C Executive, Michelle Ford or the Westlawn office ladies. Michelle has done a fantastic job during the last few months. Our canteen plays a vital role at Westlawn in providing nutritious and affordable lunches. All money raised through the canteen goes towards the purchase of valuable school resources for students. Unfortunately if a new Manager cannot be found there will be no alternative but to close our canteen. Exciting News The Grafton District Services Club (GDSC), in Mary St will be holding an open-air movie night on Saturday 24 March 2018, featuring the family movie ‘Sing’ (PG). This was supposed to occur last January but due to inclement weather plans

were changed. It will be held on the bowling green so families are welcome to take their chairs and picnic blankets for a fun filled evening. The movie will begin at 8:00pm. There will be popcorn and other treats for sale and entry is by a gold coin donation. The proceeds raised from the evening will be donated to Westlawn Public School to purchase resources for our students. Thank you to the GDSC for their support. Reminders Volunteers Due to Child Protection legislative requirements, all people who volunteer in schools are required to comply with certain procedures to protect our children, which must be enforced. If you volunteer in any capacity in the school (canteen, classroom, sport, library etc.) you need to fill out an Appendix 5 form at our school office. All volunteers must comply with these requirements. Also, all volunteers must sign in and out of the office on every visit to the school, and wear a Parent Helper badge. This is a Work Health Safety requirement in all schools. Please do not go directly to the classroom or canteen without signing in first.

annually. The voucher can be used for registration or membership fees at any approved Active Kids sport and

fitness provider. Providers must offer structured activities of no less than eight weeks' duration that provide

moderate to vigorous level of physical activity .

year.

Further information about Active Kids is available at www.sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids

The SRC present a weekly Citizenship Award, at our

primary assembly. Each week we meet to discuss

what encouraging things we have seen happening in

our playground and classrooms. The SRC look for

behaviours that are helpful, demonstrate our school

rules or an act that shows a student as a positive role

model for others. We then nominate children we

have seen displaying these behaviours. This week

the SRC focussed on finding children demonstrating

excellent sportsmanship skills.

Students who were nominated by SRC

representatives were Liam Stevens, Sophie Kratz,

Bodhi Henwood and Logan Gough.

We all voted. The award winner was ‘caught’ during

the week helping others when they fell down,

shaking students hands at the end of a game, taking

turns and sharing. This week’s Citizenship Award

winner is Sophie Kratz.

Congratulations Sophie!

Next week, the SRC will again, be looking for

students demonstrating excellent sportsmanship

skills.

Vegetable Week & The Big Vegie Crunch

Vegetable Week, featuring the fun event ‘The Big Vegie Crunch,’ is a free, school-based event for NSW primary schools, supported by NSW Health. The aim of the event is to increase children’s knowledge, exposure and positive attitudes towards vegetables. In 2017, 29,067 students across NSW primary schools crunched together to break the record for the most children eating vegetables simultaneously. In 2018 NSW Health want to break this record again and encourage children across NSW to get positive about crunching more veg! Westlawn Public School Infants students will be holding their Big Vegie Crunch this Thursday 1st March at 10.00am. Please supply your child with a generous portion of vegetables and/or fruit for this special occasion. All of the Infants students will gather under the cola on Thursday and crunch their way through their vegetables and fruit. We will also be singing our Veggie Song after we have eaten our

healthy, crunchy food.
