Welcometothe8thGowerWalkingFestival,with73walksover16days.Weofferyouopportunities to delve into history, be awestruckbyuniquelandscapes,eatgorgeous local food, explore archaeological sites, see the coast from the sea, or just meander beside sparkling rivers, paddle on sandy beaches, listen out for choughs and see buzzard soar over woodland.There are gentle strolls and strenuous walks, up hills and down valleys. You can even walk forty miles over two days, taking in the Gower coast from Bracelet Bay to Penclawdd.We have a wonderful team of local volunteers ready to introduce you to the magnificent scenery and wildlife of the Gower Peninsula, Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW1. Wear suitable footwear and clothing and be

prepared for unpredictable weather.2. Some walks are suitable for dogs on short leads

but remember there are ponies, sheep and cattle roaming on Gower.

3. Walk leaders and back markers are volunteers.

4. All walks are circular unless otherwise stated.

5. Remember to bring any medication you may require on the walk and it is always advisable to have your own First Aid kit.

6. It is always advisable to bring a drink and sun protection.

7. Some walks suggest a packed lunch. Bring snacks if you feel you may need them.

8. Young walkers aged 16 or younger should be accompanied by an adult.

9. Cars should be parked sensibly and locked with no valuables on show.

10. Duration and length of walks are approximate.

11. Walks will start promptly.

12. Participants in the Gower Walking Festival do so at their own risk.

Mumbles Tourist Association (MTA) Ltd trading as Mumbles Tourist Information Centre acts as a facilitator in producing a programme of walks for the Walking Festival. MTA does not accept responsibility for walker’s safety or personal property while taking part in the Walking Festival. Walkers are therefore advised to arrange their own personal insurance to cover risks.

WALK GRADING & SYMBOLS

Wales Coast Path and Gower 40-Miler2012 sees the completion of the Wales Coast Path and to mark this we are having an inaugural forty-mile walk, over two days, along the Coast Path around Gower. Day One starts from Bracelet Bay and covers 15 miles, finishing in Port Eynon. Day Two’s walk is 25 miles, from Port Eynon to Penclawdd. This is an excellent challenge for the dedicated walker which we hope will prove popular. There is optional Saturday night accommodation for a limited number of people at the National Trust’s new Bunkhouse at Cwm Ivy. (Walks 37 and 40)

Collect a CastleTo celebrate both the Queen’s Jubilee and the re-opening of the renovated Oystermouth Castle, we are having a ‘Collect a Castle’ theme. All walks which pass a castle are marked with the Castle symbol (as shown above). There are twelve walks

passing four castles in the area, and while you don’t get a prize, you can ask your walk steward for a CaC card to mark them off as a memento of a Jubilee year. See the website for an article about the castles.

02 Highlights of North Gower 1 Saturday 9 June

Join us on a circular trip around the beautiful Llanrhidian coastline, taking in the sights and history of Weobley Castle, Landimore and the Loughor Estuary before heading inland to appreciate the famous Gower hills of Ryers Down and Cefn Bryn. Despite the title, owners are permitted and other humans are also welcome. Daisy will lead us from Llanmadoc to Whiteford Sands, passing an old iron lighthouse and the Burry inlet. We then follow a winding route over the Whiteford Burrows through forestry and back via Cwm Ivy freshwater marsh. 08 Kilvey Hill Sunday 10 June

A gradual climb to the summit of Kilvey Hill (approx 650ft) taking a stop to talk about the history of what was once the world’s largest copperworks. We’ll see a 3500-year-old Celtic Burial Chamber and at the summit we’ll enjoy a coffee-break (bring your own) while taking in the spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons on one side and the panoramic view of Swansea Bay on the other side. 09 Rosehill Quarry and Parks Sunday 10 June

A relatively gentle urban walk through many green spaces. From Swansea seafront, the walk takes you uphill through Singleton Park to the Hillside wildlife corridor with its spectacular views of Swansea Bay, and then down through Rosehill Quarry, passing Constitution Hill and Dylan Thomas’s house and back to the seafront via Cwmdonkin and Brynmill Park.The majority of the walk will be on made-up paths or side roads, though there are some steep steps. No dogs.

10 Sunset at Rhossili Sunday 10 June

A stunning walk along the coast from Mewslade to Rhossili village, with wonderful views and excellent photo opportunities. We plan to reach the Worm’s Head Hotel in time to buy some refreshment (optional). Food served up to 9pm. We hope to see the sun setting about 10pm. Then there is a 15-minute walk back to the Car Park at Pitton Farm. Dogs on short leads.

11 The Bounds of Clyne Valley Monday 11 June

The walk begins at the southern end of the valley and takes us around the boundary of Clyne Valley, passing through several sites of historic interest. Mainly on public bridleways which may be muddy in places. The valley contains ancient woodland with the Clyne River flowing through it and has a surprising industrial history. There are wonderful views over the Valley and Swansea Bay. Bring a packed lunch. Dogs on short leads.

13 A Walk with Literature Monday 11 June

The walk will include sections of the Dylan Thomas Trail in the city and in the Uplands. Swansea’s rich literary history will be explored at various points along the route, with readings from A Swansea Anthology (compiled by James A Davies, Seren 2006). We return to the Dylan Thomas Centre to view the exhibition on Dylan Thomas and Vernon Watkins. Bring a packed lunch. No dogs.

14 Canoe the Tennant Canal Monday 11 June

A delightful evening canoe ride along the still waters of the Tennant canal. Paddle a Canadian Canoe solo, or with a partner. We will be sitting down for the duration of the trip with a break midpoint to stretch our legs. No previous experience or swimming ability needed. Instruction and all safety equipment is provided. A walk across the beach to visit the Salt House, and then on up the point to look at the archaeology of limestone quarrying at Port Eynon. We will then scramble down the rocks to look at Culver Hole, a natural cave turned into a pigeon-house, before returning to Port Eynon village. Visiting St Rhidian’s at Llanrhidian with Leper’s stone and parson’s bed, and Cheriton’s St Cadog’s - the cathedral of Gower, the walk fringes the intricately patterned salt marshes of North Gower on time-trodden paths. Then we enter the secluded Cheriton valley with its Pack Horse bridge before returning via Bovehill Tor, skirting Weobly Castle, to the little hamlet of Leason before returning to start point. 18 Flora, Fauna and Forts of Mumbles Hill Tuesday 12 June

Mumbles Hill Local Nature Reserve has a long quarrying, mining and farming history, but is now a haven of tranquillity and a home for wildlife. A talking walk with excellent views over Swansea Bay and Mumbles, pointing out the work in progress to restore the threatened limestone grassland and to uncover remnants of WW2 defences. An oyster midden has been discovered on the hill and there are plans for it to be examined and dated; we hope to have information about this on the walk. Dogs on short leads.

20 Mumbles Lighthouse and the Coastguard Station Tuesday 12 June

An evening walk led by a Swansea Coastguard volunteer. The walk will go out to the Mumbles Lighthouse which has guided ships safely into Swansea Bay past the hazardous Mixon Shoal for over 200 years. The light was once powered by coal fires and by oil but is now powered by solar panels. The tide should be low enough to see Bob’s Cave. Returning inland there will be a guided tour inside Mumbles Coastguard Station No Dogs.

24 Beyond Barlands; Biodiversity at the Dranges Wednesday 13 June

Beyond Barlands Common lies a hidden wilderness. The Dranges is an area of unimproved grasslands, oak woodlands, wet woodland, ponds and streams – a haven for wildlife. This land has been in private ownership for many years and has been managed primarily for biodiversity. Now leased by The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, the Dranges is managed as a nature reserve. The walk will focus on observing the flora and fauna of the reserve where you will possibly see butterflies and moths, dragonflies, wildflowers and grasses, a variety of bird life and maybe even signs of otters. This walk will take you around the reserve and also to some places where public access is normally not allowed. Please be aware that whilst this walk is not strenuous it will be very muddy in places, and the paths are not surfaced and often uneven and overgrown. You will need to be relatively agile to enjoy this walk. Bring a packed lunch. No Dogs.

34 In the Footsteps of Derek Friday 15 June

You’ve seen the TV programme, now do the walk! Hear stories of smuggling, a disastrous ship wreck and early mining. This walk follows one of Derek Brockway’s “Weatherman Walking” routes (unfortunately he can’t lead the walk this year as he did last year). It follows the coast path from Caswell Bay round to Pwll Du and then up the Bishopston Valley to see ‘Guzzle Hole’ and Longash mine. The return path diverts from Derek’s route, going across Bishopston and back to Caswell passing St Peter’s Well. Bishopston Valley can be muddy, even in June, and there are 2 steep paths at Pwll Du and Longash. Bring a packed lunch. Dogs on short leads.

The 2012 GWF Photography Competition is once again being run in partnership with the South Wales Evening Post. They will be publishing the shortlisted photographs, and selecting the winning photograph. The GWF is also delighted to welcome the RSPB who are providing the prizes for the winner. This year we are simply looking for your best and most creative photographs. The photographs must be taken on a 2012 Festival walk or event and you can enter up to five photographs. The closing date is 8 July 2012, and only digital photographs can be accepted.

37 Gower Forty-Miler 2-day challenge (linear): Day 1 Saturday 16 June

12 bays, 10 headlands, 8 tors, 2 days, 1 overnight (optional). Celebrate the completion of the Wales Coast Path by walking the whole length of the spectacular Gower Coast Path from Mumbles to Penclawdd over two days. Walk the first half from Bracelet Bay to Port Eynon on the Saturday. There is an optional Saturday night stay at Cwm Ivy Lodge, the National Trust’s new bunkhouse near Llanmadoc. Transport for over-nighters is provided from Port Eynon to Cwm Ivy on Saturday, with stop off for evening meal at Scurlage (additional charge), and returning to Port Eynon on Sunday morning. 62 Dunvant’s Industrial Archaeology Friday 22 June Discover hidden evidence of Dunvant’s industrial past. Remains of railways, mining, brick manufacture and quarrying are all uncovered on this saunter through time. There are even remnants of wartime defences. The substantive walk uses well-surfaced tracks for the most part, but includes some rural footpaths which are often muddy underfoot. Boots are required. 64 Bygone Days and Leafy Ways Around Oxwich and Mill Woods 1 Friday 22 June

Leaving the pretty village of Oxwich we take the ancient path up towards Penrice, pausing to admire the coastal views. At Penrice we can see the murder stone at the church before descending through a deeply wooded vale into Millwoods. We stop at the Mill ruins for lunch and more local history. After densely wooded paths, we emerge abruptly to go over a stile and onto a green lush meadow with views of Llanmadoc Hill and beyond. Bridleways take us to Hangman’s Cross, on to Slade and Oxwich Castle and then we disappear down the very ancient Gander Street to Oxwich. Bring a packed lunch. Quiz for children. 66 A Hill, the Sea and a Castle 1 Friday 22 June

An evening walk from Mumbles village via Mumbles Hill Nature Reserve to the beautiful coast path at Limeslade. We return to explore other parts of Mumbles Hill and on to Oystermouth Castle and woods. Magnificent views of Swansea Bay and Mumbles Lighthouse will be enjoyed from the top of Mumbles Hill with great photographic opportunities. Please be aware that the walk to the top of the hill is steep with a large number of steps. Dogs on short leads.

67 Explore the Forgotten N E Corner of Gower Saturday 23 June

Enjoy some wonderful views from the top of Ryers Down and Llanmadoc Down over the Loughor Estuary. The route takes us over the oldest bridge in Gower, past the old village school at Llanmadoc, and through the Bulwark on top of Llanmadoc Hill. We can also enjoy some tea and cakes at the community shop in Llanmadoc (the chocolate brownies are my favourite!). Bring a packed lunch. Dogs on short leads.

72 Lliw Reservoirs to Penlle’r Castell (Gower Way) Sunday 24 June

Meet at the Lower Lliw Reservoir for an eight mile casual walk, passing the Upper Lliw Reservoir, through a pine forest and up to Penlle’r Castell. This was once a Celtic Iron Age fort, featuring a circular, dry moat. It was later turned into a Drover’s Village – and on to the last stone of the Gower Way. Bring a packed lunch. 73 Tankeylake Moor and More Sunday 24 June

A short climb up Llanmadoc Hill is rewarded with perhaps the best panorama of Gower. After a descent to Llanmadoc, walk through mixed woodland rich with native flowers, and on to the old sea wall with magnificent views of the Loughor Estuary; then between the stately conifers of Cwm Ivy Wood. Through dunes we emerge onto the vast sands of Broughton Beach. We return via a track, a road and a path with grand views of Worm’s Head. Bring a packed lunch. Dogs on short leads.
